  • Falsely accused of installing 3rd party RAM into my macbook pro while just a month away from my warranty expiring

Hey, this is my first "post" here on Apple discussions.
Since i bought my Macbook pro in October 2011, my macbook has been given for servicing many times. We've always used the Authorised Service centre here in Singapore (QCD Technologies), and I can swear I have never taken my laptop to a third party. However, when I gave my laptop in for servicing yesterday because it wasn't booting up and instead beeped 3 times every time I tried to switch it on (suggesting faulty RAM), they told me that they can't work on the laptop until we talk to Apple because they claim that the RAM installed is not original (suggesting that we used a 3rd party for my macbook's repair). Needless to say we were extremely appalled because we have never consulted a 3rd party, and this makes it extremely clear to us that either QCD or Apple slipped up in their servicing/production without accounting for changing the RAM or are simply lying. If they don't have a log for it, then we know they made a mistake, however the problem is they can easily use this as an excuse to evade costs on their part.
Has anyone else experienced this? What should I do from here on?  I need my laptop for college quite urgently and It's very convenient that Apple is doing this just 1 month before my warranty after extending it, expires finally.

Have you taken the computer to the same repair place every time it was repaired? If so, suggest to them that they must have installed third party RAM. And, another fact to consider: Apple does not manufacture RAM - it always uses third party RAM. They do change suppliers, so different machines may have different brands of RAM. And, as mentioned: installing RAM does not void your warranty - you may want to point that out to the repair place as well. Although, to be fair, a senior Applecare rep once told me to reinstall the original RAM before sending in the machine for repair so no one could possibly blame the problems on third party RAM.
You can easily install RAM yourself; use one/both of the links provided by leroydouglas to purchase the correct RAM as three beeps at startup usually mean there is a problem with the RAM.

Yes that is your best bet.  Without looking at it too closely double check your options here:

    or Crucial http://www.crucial.com/

  • HT1270 does installing aftermarket RAM into new macbook pro non-retina void apple warranty

does installing aftermarket RAM into new macbook pro non-retina void apple warranty

Only for the RAM which should be covered by the manufacturers/vendors warranty.  Now if you damage the MBP while installing the RAM then you may find yourself voiding the MBP warranty.  But ir does take a lot to do that.
    Ciao.

  • Want to upgrade RAM on 2011 Macbook pro 13 2.3GHz i5 4GB

    Hello all,
First of all let me thanks you guys for the support you have been giving here.
I am new to the forum and this is my first post, I recently bought the new 2011 Macbook pro 13inch 2.3GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5 with the 4GB RAM (4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM-2x2GB)
I want to upgrade from 4 GB to 8GB. I have researched this issue and found three suitable options, i need help deciding on which to buy. Any good brand or compatibility issues
I really appreciate your help guys. The links
    Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148345
    G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB)

    8.0GB OWC Memory (2 x 4GB)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I'd worry a little bit about Newegg's "Limited warranty."
OWC is fully warranted — no iffy "limited" on it.
You can use OWC's rebate form to turn in your current RAM and get $26 refunded if you buy the upgrade from them.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/support/rebates/memory.cfm
This would bring the price down to $86.99, but no free shipping, and, presumably, it would cost you shipping to send the modules to them in order to collect the rebate, too.
I'd want to know the details of that "Limited" warranty if buying from Newegg.

How can I install Snow Leopard on my 15" MacBook Pro without using its DVD drive?

I'm assuming your dvd drive is broken? if you have a thumb drive large enough (8GB or better), you can use another computer to make a bootable image from the install dvd to the thumb drive. then you can install from the the thumb drive.

  • How can I install Mavericks on a gifted 2011 MacBook Pro?

My brother gifted me his late 2011 MacBook Pro running OS X Lion.
I booted with command+r, launched the Disk Utility, and erased the disk.  I closed Disk Utility and selected "Reinstall Mac OS X."  The machine tells me that it needs to verify my computer's eligibility before it will download and restore Mac OS X, presumably because Lion was not free like Mavericks.  It then fails and says that it could not find installation information for the machine.
Would it be possible for me to download the Mavericks install on an external hard drive, plug the external drive into the machine, and just install Mavericks using my Apple ID?  If so, what would be the steps to do this?
    Thanks

Also, where on my machine does a full Mavericks install image download to when I download it from the App Store?

  • How do I clean the fans on my 2011 macbook pro 13inch

I have a early 2011 macbook pro 13 inch. It travels with me every where I go. I have had the computer almost three months now and have not had a problem with it.  Some how, debris got in to the fans. I am thinking it some how got sucked in to one of the intake vents. I hear it  (not often) ratteling when I move the computer or tilt it ECT.  It sounds like somthing is blowing around in the fan.  It is a scarry sound.  At first I thought it was the hard disk.   I know it is not the hard disk because I was listening to the computer  when it was making the sound and it is comming from the back end of the computer, nowhere near where hard disk is located. My question is, How do I clean/ remove the debris? should I be concernd?  other than that the computer runs normaly

Personally, I wouldn't touch them directly.  Use a vaccum (don't use one of those compressed air cans) to vacuum out all the stuff/dust/hair/etc.  Do not try to remove them.  Do not try to shove a stick or something in it.

  • Anyone had any screen discoloration in the 2011 macbook pro 13inch?

I've begun to notice my Macbook Pro 13inch I bought just August of 2011 has a slight discoloration that is only visable when the screen is black. Anyone else with this model have the same issue?

No it's just this weird line like thing. I can't afford to hand my mac over to the Genius bar for a week either. It's how I work and if I don't have a comp, I lose my job.
I took this with my iPod Touch
I didn't even notice it until I started to watch a movie and then I realized the cloudiness wasn't part of the movie.

Yes, you should be able to do it. I have done it - well, I had my local service place do it for me. It works great!

  • OS clean install interupted on 2011 Macbook Pro G4. Now computer not booting up

I have a Mac Book Pro G4 (Early 2011) I was in the middle of doing a Yosemite clean install and I I took the memory stick out before the OS finished because I couldn't cancel and I thought it was hung-up. Now it doesn't power up. I get the attached message!
After this message it just restarts, then message appears after 8 secs or so then restarts again...  I have the Software Install and Restore disk. It came with two. I tried that but it doesn't automatically open anything. I also tried to open in Safe mode but I don't think it get far enough along to do that... Help!!!!

I had downloaded Yosemite onto my Imac, then followed the instructions to create bootable OS on memory stick, Did that then tried to load that on my Macbook. I then made the mistake of taking it out mid install i think. Now it does what I mentioned above. The computer has tried to reboot with the memory stick in so that doesn't work... ;(

  • Can I install RAM from 2011 Macbook Pro into 2009 macbook Pro?

I just upgraded my new mbp from 4 to 8gb. I have a friend with what I think is an early 2009 mbp. Can I take my two 2gb (4gb total) chips and put them in his?
Also, if his is newer, same question. I know that recently (not sure when exactly) the memory cap was raised to 8 on the mbp. So I'm wondering if it's a different kind of chip that wouldn't be compatible with older mbp's.
    Thanks for you help!

You can try it, but it may not work, because your RAM is faster than what's specified for his machine. It should downclock to the speed of his system bus, but it doesn't always.
To use 8GB in an early-2009 MBP, it must be running at least OS X 10.6.6 and have the latest Apple firmware update installed on it.

  • Late 2011 Macbook Pro 13inch, 1TB SSD?

Quick question, Can my machine accept the 1tb SSD? and does anybody here with the same machine as mine already has the 1tb ssd?
Im looking to upgrade my machine to 8gb Ram and 1tb SSD (if possible). I saw a great deal of the 1tb SSD from samsung

Yes, your MBP will accept a 1 TB SSD.  It just has to be a SATA 2.5" dia. form factor.  Samsung gets good reviews on these forums.
You 2011 MBP will accept up to 16 GB RAM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.
