Installing 9iAS with MS SQLServer Database

Hi All:
Is it possible to install Oracle 9iAS using a Microsoft SQLServer Database as the backend?
If so where can I find an installation guide for this.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
MJ

Hi Mark:
Some of the components in 9iAS support running against non-Oracle databases. For example, you can use Forms & Reports against a non-Oracle database through ODBC. You can open workbooks in Discoverer, against non-Oracle databases. But you can't use the Oracle Database, Cache against a non-Oracle database.
Hope this helps your question.

• Error installing 9ias using 9i database

I installed the new 9i database on win2000 and try too install

reporting "not all dependensies for the component oracle
enterprise manager common files 2.2.0.0.0 is found. Missing

Please help !!!!

Hello everyone.
I am also trying to install 9iAS with RDBMS 9.0.1.1, and I am
getting a lot of problems.
The first one is that the iSetup.exe of the first cd does
nothing when I double click on it! I found the setup.exe on
install\win32 on the cd, and with changes on oraparam.ini, i
have managed to start the installation.
I have also got the error about "not all dependensies for the
component oracle enterprise manager common files 2.2.0.0.0 is
found. Missing component oracle.swe.jre 1.1.8.10.0", and managed
to pass it with the rename of ProgramFiles\Oracle\Inventory
directory. I got then the problems with the installation of the
8.0.6 tools, that abort with a beep!
I took the advice of Stephen Fenwick on this thread, of
installing RDBMS 8.1.7, but it is the same, the 8.0.6 tools keep
aborting.
I am using W2K with SP2.
Can anyone please help me?

Installing 9iAS 1.0.2.2 on 9i database and getting an
error: "ORA-04031: unable to allocate 40972 bytes of shared

Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Janez

I had the same problem. Try this:
Please see if the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack is installed. You can normally see
this in Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
There are two solutions/workarounds:
Solution One: Make a Registry Export
1. Start REGEDIT. Navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\
Microsoft\Transaction Server\Setup(OCM)
2. Choose Registry, Export Registry File. Select to export the current branch.
3. Enter a filename, e.g. pre-ias.reg
4. With 'Setup(OCM)' highlighted, press the Delete key. At the 'confirm key
delete' prompt, answer Yes.
5. Install the 9i Application Server.
6. Re-establish the registry key by double clicking the filename you created.
Solution Two: Uninstall the Option Pack
This solution takes more time, but if you don't need the Option Pack you can
remove it.
Remove the NT Option Pack, install 9iAS, then you can install the Option Pack
again.
Explanation
It appears that the Universal Installer hangs on a specific registry key that
belongs to a component of the Option Pack.

Thanks,
Janez

Dear Janez,
I understand the disappointment you are going through right now,
because I my self went through the same feeling of frustration
for a long time before I could successfully install Oracle9iAS
1.0.2.2 in conjunction with an Oracle9i 9.0.1 database (on the
Windows platform).
First of all, for some reason (???) Oracle no longer allows any
user to connect as SYS without the "as SYSDBA" clause. The OPCA
wizard requests the SYS password and connect string for the
database where it has to create the Portal Repository. I believe
that the "opca.jar" has the login credentials hard-coded
as "SYS" (without the "as SYSDBA" clause). To work around this,
set the parameter O7_DICTIONARY_ACCESSIBILITY=TRUE in the
database INIT.ORA file.
The next problem I faced was with the Oracle JDBC driver that
was supplied along with the Oracle9i database (release 9.0.1). I
found that I was not being able to establish a simple connection
using the classes111.zip or classes12.zip provided with the
Oracle9i database itself. I then visited the Oracle Technology
Network to search for Oracle9i JDBC drivers and downloaded the
classes12.zip file listed for the Solaris platform (there were
no JDBC drivers listed for the Oracle9i database on Windows
NT/2000, only Oracle8i release 8.1.7).
Then I ran the Portal Configuration Assistant batch file
(launch.bat) after replacing the existing classes111.zip in the
script's CLASSPATH with the classes12.zip I had just downloaded.
Now I was getting the same error message that you have listed.
I then attempted to create the Portal 3.0.9 repository manually
instead of using the Configuration Wizard and was finally able
to do so. I am outlining the steps below that you have to follow
to do the same.
1. With a text editor, open the following file:
<ORACLE_HOME>\portal30\admin\plsql\cat\catload.sql
2. Comment out the following line:
REM spool ..\..\portal30\admin\plsql\cat\catldscr.sql
3. Add a new line to indicate the correct location of
catldscr.sql for a manual installation:
spool catldscr.sql
4. Save and close the file.
5. With a text editor, open the following file:
<ORACLE_HOME>\portal30\admin\plsql\owa\owaload.sql
6. Comment out the following line:
REM spool ..\..\portal30\admin\plsql\owa\wpildscr.sql
7. Add a new line to indicate the correct location of
wpildscr.sql for a manual installation:
spool wpildscr.sql
8. Save and close the file.
9. Open a Command Prompt and set the ORACLE_HOME like:
set ORACLE_HOME=E:\Oracle\iSuites
10. From the %ORACLE_HOME%\portal30\admin\plsql
directory, run the onetime script to install the PL/SQL Web
Toolkit packages:
onetime.cmd -p <SYS_Password> -l onetime.log -c <connect_string>
11. Then run the Oracle9iAS Portal installation script from the
Command Prompt (%ORACLE_HOME%\portal30\admin\plsql\winstall) to
install the Oracle9iAS Portal product. This may take about 2 to
3 hours.
winstall.cmd -s portal30 -p portal30 -u users -t temp -d users -
l users -o portal30_sso -i portal30_sso_ps -r 12345 -c
<connect_string> > winstall.log
12. At a DOS prompt, run the %ORACLE_HOME%\portal30
\admin\plsql\ssodatan script. This script configures your login
via the Single Sign-On (SSO) Server.
ssodatan.cmd -w http://<Machine_Name>:<Port_No.>/pls/portal30/ -
l http://<Machine_Name>:<Port_No.>/pls/portal30_sso/ -s
portal30 –p portal30 -o portal30_sso -d portal30_sso -e
portal30_sso_ps -c <connect_string>
13. Stop and restart your HTTP server:
net stop OracleiSuitesHTTPServer
net start OracleiSuitesHTTPServer
14. In the DOS prompt, run the following two commands to install
the Portal Online Help.
cd %ORACLE_HOME%\portal30\admin\plsql\wwu
contimp.cmd -s portal30 -p portal30 -o portal_help -m reuse –u
database_user -d ..\..\..\doc\site\hlp30ca.dmp -c
<connect_string>
Hope this helps.

• Installing Discoverer with Database Version Oracle 10g Express Edition

Hello,
Is it possilbe to install Discoverer with database version Oracle 10g Express Edition? I have Oracle Fusion Middleware 11.1.1.1.0 on my Windows XP machine as well. If so, can someone please provide me a link to the Discoverer download.
Regards,
Kelly

Note that the Personal Edition of the database is 'the most powerful' version, in that it contains all features and options of the Enterprise Edition (expect RAC and Enterprise Manager packs)
As such, the Personal Edition, at a mere USD$400-500 is one of the most cost effective for-fee products that Oracle has in it's inventory. It is targeted at the developer. And it comes with the complete set of Sample Data, whereas XE has a very limited subset (since it does not support all functionality).
Express Edition is indeed free, but it is not supported, and can not be patched. OTOH it does have a lighter footprint.
Again, I am not sure whether Disco 11g is compatible with Express Edition. (It's on my schedule for December ...)

• Problems with installing 9ias infrastructure

Iam trying to install oracle 9ias application server on a windows 2000 professional edition.
so before installing application server iam trying to install 9ias infrastructure.
my initial attempts have failed so iam trying to reinstall it again after deinstalling the existing infrastructure.
the error iam getting is that the user who installed earlier is different from current user.
i use only one account on the machine. how can i correct the problem.
thanks
chakri

The server has 2 500mhz Pentium Processors.
Actually, I was able to bypass the issue by forcing the OUI to use 1 processer (Note 229478.1), but I am now having issues with the Infrastructure Schema Configuration Assistant. Even though it says it succeeded, the log says otherwise.

• Installing 9iAS on the database server

Is it OK, if I install 9iAS on the same server, where the 9i database has been installed? If I install 9iAS on the same server, then many of the services get duplicated (as it requires different home), like TNS listner, intelligent agent, HTTP server, Management server etc. Also default home itelligent agent service doesn't start after 9iAS installation.
OR should I install 9iAS on another machine?
-Yogesh

As long as Oracle9iAS and Oracle DB are in two different Oracle Homes, it is possible to have this coexistance of these Oracle products. Infact, this is true for any other Oracle product and Oracle9iAS. This is true for any platform.
Further, in Release 2, 9.0.2 version, we are supporting Oracle9i Application Server (J2EE and Web Cache, Portal and Wireless, BI and Forms, UM install types), Oracle9iAS and Oracle9iDS Release 2 can be installed into same Oracle Home.

• Install 9iAS on same box as database?

Is there a downside to installing 9iAS on the same box (HP 9000) as our data warehouse? Will it require a lot of resources that will slow down access to the data warehouse?
The scenario is that we want to install 9iAS ONLY to enable us to use Discoverer Plus. It will not be used for any thing else. Management wants to install on the existing box where the database is so they don't have to buy another machine just for 9iAS. Is this a viable solution?

We have done this on NT servers without any problems. We serve hundreds of users this way. Discoverer users spend most of their time reading screens anyway, so the CPU can do DB stuff most of the time.

• Selecting from multiple sqlserver databases with HS

I have setup HS from oracle 8.1.7 to sqlserver 7.0 for one database and it works fine. I have about six databases on the same NT server and will like to select from the various databases, the tables I need to update Oracle. I have edited the odbc.ini file to add the other sqlserver database entries. I have also updated the inithsmsql.ora file to add multiple entries for the other databases. When I select from distinct tables in the databases it works fine. But if I have the same tables in database A,B and C and want to select column from table A in database A, I get the result for table A in database B. Is there a way to select from identical tables from different databases and get the result for the table and database that is needed.
ie select column from data_souce_name.table_name@hsmsql. Is there a syntax or configuration for that.
Thanks

Vira I am actually making multiple entries of these parameters in the inithsmsql.ora file. The first data source is test then I will copy it and edit it for another data source test1 etc. Even making one init.ora file in the hs/admin directory for the databases how will the system know from which database to query if one table exist in more than one database. Also even adding multiple listeners for the different sids won't help as the program= will be same for all. ? multiple tnsnames entries?
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = test
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = 2
HS_FDS_TRACE_FILE_NAME = test5.trc
HS_FDS_SHAREABLE_NAME = /dbdata/odbc/lib/libodbc.so

• Succes installing 9iAS R2 (release 2) on RedHat Linux 7.3

I had success installing 9iAS release 2 on RedHat Linux 7.3. I used the instructions on http://www.puschitz.com/OracleOnLinux.shtml.
At first, I tried this on RedHat 8.0. Funny thing is: installation of infrastructure failed even though I followed the instructions. Then I downloaded 7.3, followed EXACTLY the same instructions and voila, works like a charm.
Puschitz' instructions are for 9i and not for 9iAS though. Some additions:
1) One of the pre-installation steps there says to set some environment variables, one of them being the SID. It's set to 'test', but of course with standard settings the sid of the database that comes along with 9iAS has a SID of 'iasdb'.
2) Also what I did, was to downgrade the binutils package to the version provided by Oracle here: http://otn.oracle.com/software/products/oracle9i/files/binutils_readme.html. As an alternative, Puschitz says to change some makefiles. I didn't try this.
3) I then installed the infrastructure. When finished, I exited the installation and rebooted. After the reboot:
4) I changed to the /bin directory and typed (as root):
ln -s /sbin/fuser
5) Changed back to user 'oracle' and started the infrastructure with:
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus
connect / as sysdba
startup
exit
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/lsnrctl start
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/oidmon connect=iasdb start
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/oidctl connect=iasdb server=oidldapd instance=1 start
$ORACLE_HOME/opmn/bin/opmnctl startall
6) Then started the installer and did the middletier installation. Rebooted.

Following your instructions i've also succesfull installation of ias9iR2 Infrastructure on Redhat7.3. Checked the database Iasdb and Enterprise Manager Website (on http://liminwang:1810), everything works fine. Hence i try to install Portal & Wireless on the same machine on a different Oracle_home (but on the same Oracle_base) according to the installation guide. The installation stuck when i've chosen the Portal and Wireless option. I get a warning that the Enterprise Manager Website Process is still running and it must be stopped to proceed the stallation. So i stopped this process by: $oracle_home/bin/emctl stop
Still i get the same warning. Stopping the database also doesn't help. Even when i deinstalled the Enterprise Manager Website component i get the same warning.
Please help!

• Create multiple portal instances with only one database?

Can someone create multiple portal instances with only one database?
If so, how is this done, just by running the portal configuration wizard?
How are most people running with multiple developers working on portal? Do they share a portal instance, or create their own?
Thank you very much!
Phillip

i'm currently using 9ias rel 2(9.0.2) and i have install one infrastructure and two mid tier, hoping that this will create two portal, but it didn't. Can you please tell me how to do create two portal within one server.

• Trying to install 9iAS 1.0.2.2.1 on Win2000

Universal Installer cant install the product. We are getting an
error like: "cant find oracle.swd.jre 1.1.8.10.0" But on the CD1
there is oracle.swd.jre 1.1.7.30. Can anyone help us?

Better yet: I found this from one of the forums, it has
something to do with the 9iAS using an older version of 'jre
something' than the 9i database... here it is: I am going to
try it myself....

Hi !
I had the same problem before I had a look into this forum. But
it seems i found a way around this problem:
1. I have all the required files copied from CD to my harddisk
(disk1, disk2 and disk3).
2. I copied the required "jre_1.1.8"-files from the Oracle9i-DB
CD 1 stage directory into the stage directory of "Disk1" and to
be sure to the other stage dir in the "install" directory.
3. I use the OUI 2.0 which has been installed with the database.
With this I got around this message. Hope this helps anyone.
