Installing a Blu-Ray Drive in my Mac Pro...

I am considering installing a Blu-Ray drive in my second drive location on my mac pro. The drive I am interested in is this one:
http://www.videoguys.com/bdr202.html
When I spoke with the gentlemen there, he advised me that he didn't believe it would fit in the Mac Pro. How could that be? Isn't there a standard size for all media drives like DVD, CD, and blu-ray drives? Anyone know for sure if this will fit?

It is a standard sized drive and WILL fit
Although you should always be mindful to be sure that you have remove ALL bezels which can interfere with the drive fitting else the drawer mechanism. The easy way to be sure is to make it look exactly like the SuperDrive. The one that is typically missed is the bezel that's right on the end of the drawer. It can be had to spot but it's there.

What is the best blue-ray drive for my Mac Pro????
I wanted a BWU-200S but it says windows only i called apple
and all they could tell me was logitech....wouldn't tell me a model
    or anything.
I would really like one that does all the formats and feature that the
    Sony BWU-200S does.
I read that the BWU-200S might work in the mac pro it just only comes with
windows software. If anyone has tried this let me know please i need this soon.

This site makes Mac compatible Blueray drives:
    http://store.fastmac.com/index.php?cPath=10252
The questions to ask them is:
    1. Which applications can be used to burn bluray movies from it?
    2. Which applications can be used to playback commercial bluray from it?
    3. Does it let you burn DVDs from iDVD, iTunes and the Finder as well as CDs and CD-RWs?
    4. Does it support both DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL for burning and playback?
    5. Does it allow for booting from the system installer that shipped with the machine and running the hardware test that shipped with the machine?
    6. Do you get to keep the original optical drive in case you want to troubleshoot if system issues are due to their drive?
Some of these may already be on the website, I just haven't taken the time to look it completely over.

  • Blu-Ray/HD on a Mac Pro ??

The purpose of this thread is to consolidate the topic of "lack" of BluRay on the Mac Pro, and also discuss HD software, and HD authoring. I found bits and pieces of the BluRay topic in many posts, but wanted to try to discuss this in more detail, all in one thread.
In review, much as been said in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1377728&tstart=0

    Rufus wrote:
.. Apple Mac business is not hurting, in fact, they're selling more Macs than they ever have in their 30 year history.. Their US market share has gone from roughly 4% to nearly 8% in the past two years.. They've done nothing fatal, and the pro video market has not abandoned them..<</div>
Their market share is at an all time high, but I think your forgetting that this is probably due to OSX and iLife. Many people switched because OSX makes anything MS makes look like pure trash. Also, iLife made handling the most popular media chores (music, digital photos, digital video, dvd authoring) easy and in a well thought out integrated package. This simple idea didn't exist on the PC side. This no longer exist for HD video/dvd authoring for the masses on the Mac.
Yeah, OSX and iLife is better than anything MS is currently producing, I'm not arguing or forgetting anything.. I agree with that.
I don't know what Apple's reason for not including Blu-Ray drives are.. Maybe they were waiting for Blu-Ray tech spec standards to be set.. Maybe they were waiting for the format war to play out... Maybe they are waiting for prices to come down... Maybe they are leary about embracing the next gen of optical media when everything else in their business model is pushing away from optical media. Maybe it's a combination of all or any of the above... Who knows...<</div>
solsun, you are very disconnected to this subject to try to be so profound on the matter.
    * BluRay specs have been set for many months now....drives exist, media exist.... it's no longer on the drawing board.
    * The format war was over a year ago, when BluRay had 40% more capacity. It was a no brainer.
The only people who didn't understand this was the ones that invested millions in HD-DVD.
    * Prices to come down??? Are you kidding?? When the original Superdrive appeared it was a $1000 item. People bought them like candy. The Pioneer BluRay burner sold for about the same $1k a year ago and now sells for around $600. Are waiting for it to get to $30?
    * The only people pushing away from optical are the ones that are salivating to make a buck, or to protect a buck from it's disappearance. Logically it makes very little sense as we have already discussed.
Whatever the reason, I'm sure they have one. I seriously don't think Steve Jobs said 'Hey, let's ** off the pro vid user base and not put Blu-ray drives in the Mac Pros" for no good reason..<</div>
As also discussed, the only reason possible is a political one, in the sense of making a deal with the studios for the "movie rental" idea, in return to hold off putting HD authoring in the hands of everyone while the studios are geared up for making a killing by selling BluRay discs commercially.

Actually, I'm neither "disconnected" nor trying to sound profound, just suggesting possibilities. But as I said, no one really knows why we haven't seen Blu-ray drives yet.... But for the record:
    1. Blu-Ray specs have changed as recently as Oct 07. Yes, drives and media exist, and yes, in some instances, there have already been some incompatibilities with the older vs. the current Blu-Ray drives and media BECAUSE of the changing specs.
    2. The format war HAS NOT been over for a year.. In fact, most would agree that tipping point was only last month when Warner declared Blu-Ray exclusivity going forward.
    3. I suppose you're right, there will be some willing to pay, but it would be a very limited pro-market demographic in contrast with Apple's current user base. And it is a possibility that Apple feels it may not be worth it to invest the $$ for such a limited market.. I don't know..
    4. You couldn't be more wrong on this one.. I know that there are still needs for optical media in the near term, I'm not saying otherwise, but a change is happening and Apple is leading the way more than ANY other tech company for the demise of optical media by providing alternate solutions... Examples:
---Don't buy a music CD, buy songs from iTunes...
---Don't buy a DVD, rent or buy movies from iTunes.
---Made a movie on your computer or have some photos to share? Don't burn them to CD, publish them on the web with .mac, or better yet, stream them to your TV with Apple TV, or take them with you on your iPod or iPhone.
---Need to back up your computers hard-drive? Don't backup to DVD, automate and stream your backups wirelessly using TIme Machine and Time Capsule..
    ---MacBookAir
Get the picture? Apple is moving away from optical. There are still some hurdles to conquer, but it's happening..
Remember in the iLife 08 keynote when Steve was introducing the new apps? He spent a lot of time on iPhoto, iMovie and the rest, but when he got to iDVD, all he said was "For those of you who still use DVD's," we've added some new... etc, etc..

  • Can i install a blue ray drive in my laptop?

My laptop is the G62t series. I would like to install a blue ray drive in bt dnt know if my laptop can be able to do so.
here is a link which should help:

any help would be great. Thanks

not recommended...but here is a prior post that answers it:
    prior post
This ebay seller apparently has the drives for all HP models...the exact part number you need (depends on whether yours is black or biscotti in color) is in the prior link above.I would contact the seller in advance with a question and be sure he has your exact model as he seems to be selling IDE drives and I am sure yours is a SATA interface.
    eBay
$139 is not too bad. A Blu-Ray reader with a DVD burner was an option on your laptop series so it can work. You likely will need to add Blu-Ray playback software to watch movies. If you wanted a Blu-Ray burner the answer is even more complex so I hope you only meant you want a drive to watch Blu-Ray movies.

  • Do I need an open serial ATA to install a Blu Ray drive?

I have a mac pro that I wish to add a blu ray internal burner to in my empty bay. However I am using all 4 of my internal Serial ATA slots for 1TB hard drives in each. I was unsure but though I saw you needed one of these to install a BR drive.
If I do need one of these for this, I could put a 2TB internal HD and free up a slot assumming that the 2TB internal drives exist now, I have not checked.
I am looking at the Pioneer BDR-205 but am open to suggestions.

It could just be the dead/defective power adapter Lacie seems to be a known for. Before you crack the drive open, i would strongly recommend that you test it with a known, working power adapter. Perhaps a friend with the same drive? If you're lucky, i've seen some of the Lacie drives set up in Apple Retail Stores, and perhaps an employee might let you test your drive there. Worst case scenario, you could order a new adapter which will set you back $19.00.

  • 4 Questions re installing a second Optical Drive in a Mac Pro (Harpertown)

For years I have owned and used a Sony DRX-810UL-T optical drive as an external unit with my Mac Pro "Harpertown" purchased on February 19, 2009. It was connected to the computer using the firewire cable and it worked correctly.
    Some Background
Today it dawned on me I had an empty optical drive bay in the Mac Pro so I should move the Sony drive in there and eliminate a bit of the clutter on my computer desk. I read the section on installing optical drives in the little Apple manual that came with my computer but it only discussed a single drive installation.
Checked on line and found several sources describing how to do this and a couple of YouTube videos also showing how to do this. (Oddly only one of the videos mentioned the need for plugging in the power cable).
I made sure I plugged the cables into the proper units as both had helpful legends on them indicating which was for the top drive and which was for the bottom drive.
After installation I powered up and found neither drive would appear.
Checked the About this Mac item in the Apple menu and got confirmation that the system didn't see any drives. Opened the computer again and unplugged the Sony's power and data cables then closed the computer and fired up again.
The original Super Drive again appeared and worked correctly.
    The Questions:
    1. Since the Super drive came with the Mac Pro and was in the top space can I assume it needed to stay there and not get moved to the lower space?
    2. Since the Sony DRX-810UL-T has the correct connectors does this indicate this drive can be used with the Harpertown Mac Pro?
    3. If it can, did I miss setting some jumpers? I noticed both drives have one jumper in place but each appears to be in a slightly different spot than the other.
    4. Since the Sony drive worked correctly with my current OS (10.6.6) using the firewire cable can I assume it does not need a firmware update to be used internally.
    Wrap up
Since the original Super Drive is working properly I am sure I did no damage to it or the computer. It would be nice to be able to get the Sony DVD drive to work internally, however.
Thanks, in advance, to anyone who can offer some help with this situation.

    hatter,
Thank you for this added information. Here's the current status of things.
Just to check that the Sony drive would work internally I disconnected the superdrive (ata cable and power cable) and made the Sony drive the only drive plugging it in as if it was the top drive. The jumper for it was set to cable select.
The Profiler found it and listed is in both the ATA section and the disc burner section.
I checked the jumper on the superdrive to be sure it was also set for cable select and plugged both drives back in using the top connections for the super drive and bottom connections for the Sony,
Again only the SuperDrive appears in the ATA list and and the disc burner list.
I am beginning to wonder it the problem may actually be with the ribbon cable that snakes back to the motherboard.
Since that cable has a set of dual outlets at the drive end and has them labeled for top and bottom, is it possible to plug in only one drive using the bottom connector as a test to see if data flows to the motherboard?
Is it possible some part of that cable has somehow become disconnected at the motherboard?

  • I want to install a second disc drive in my mac pro - which ones?

I have always had all-in-ones. I now have a mac pro, and I love it. I have many disc drives of varying sorts lying around my place, most from older windows towers, but one cd-rw drive from a round base imac. Since I could never do these types of expansion on my old macs, I have no clue what will hook up in my empty drive bay.
This drive from the apple is a... sony cd-r/rw drive unit crx170E/. can I put it in my mac pro's second slot?
If so or if not, can someone briefly explain the types of cd-r connections that would/would not work so i understand the concepts?

Oh alright. Here is the same drive someone put up for sale, just in case I was speaking wrong.

  • Install RAID and SAS drives in my Mac Pro

    Hello,
I have a couple of Mac Pro machines and I want to install extra drives.
I want to install 2 extra SAS 300GB drives.
I take it I need to install a RAID card also.
Will the drives connect to the RAID?
I don't want them to mirror I simply want them as single drives that I can use for storage.
My main concern is will I be able to mouint and access these SAS RAID drives without having to reinstall the OSX System?
    Thanks,
    Dean

Not quiet sure I follow your plan here.
I want to install 2 extra SAS 300GB drives.
OK, no problem, assuming you have 2 spare bays.
I take it I need to install a RAID card also.
OK, no problem there, either, assuming you have a spare slot.
Will the drives connect to the RAID?
Umm, if you connect them, yes. It doesn't happen automatically
I don't want them to mirror I simply want them as single drives that I can use for storage.
This is what I don't understand - why use the RAID card if you're not planning on RAIDing the drives?
My main concern is will I be able to mouint and access these SAS RAID drives without having to reinstall the OSX System?
If these are additional drives it won't affect the existing system at all. They're completely separate.
If, on the other hand, you want to take the existing system and move it to a RAID volume then yes, you'll need to do some kind of work to preserve your data, but it's not clear that's what you're trying to do.

  • Pioneer blu ray drive in mac and with bootcamp??

Hello everyone. I read a post on this forum about installing a blu ray drive in a mac and it working perfect. Now my question is, will it work if I have bootcamp and switch over to windows XP. Otherwords will the drive work on windows XP on the mac using bootcamp???? thanks

Windows doesn't recognize the spare SATA ports on the motherboard. So if that is what you were going to use, no.
There is an article up on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com about how to install a drive in the lower optical bay.

Did you even read the article you linked to?
    Here's a quote from it
"The video itself looked fine when it played properly, but it stopped and started constantly, and often displayed with huge, ugly artifacts. And at times, the app would freeze completely and require a force quit.
Just to make sure it wasn’t a problem with one Blu-ray disc, I tried some others. With Hot Tub Time Machine the results were much, much worse. It got a few seconds into the United Artists logo before the movie and completely froze playback. On several attempts. With David Cronenberg’s The Fly, playback was generally better—but the software played the ‘making of’ movie instead of the actual film. I thought there might have been a preference to help with the movie selection, but—wait for it—the Preferences item didn’t do anything when I selected it."
    Not very promising is it

  • System crash when using blue-ray drive

    Hi,
when I use my blue-ray-drive, often the Macbook Pro with Mac OS X hangs, after a few seconds it reboots.
Most replicable is it happens when I insert a media in the drive.
This happens, when I connect the drive via USB and also when I connect it via eSata at the Thunderbolt docking device.
The problem already existed in MacOS 10.10.0
Is this a bug of Mac OS?
    I use:
    - Macbook Pro Retina 15" Late 2013 wit Mac OS X 10.10.2
    - Blue-Ray- Burner Plextor PX-B940SA
    - S-Ata to USB 2.0 or eSata bridge/ housing with separate AC-adapter - DeLock 42160
    - optional Akitio Thunderbolt Docking unit with eSata-port
    Appreciate your help!
    kind reagards
    Christoph

    Uh...no!
You have plugged in a Blu-ray playing optical which will NOT work and may crash your system as long as there is no installed software to support it.
Was there any other additonal driver software that was needed to use this Blu-Ray optical drive under OS X.
DId this drive say anywhere that is is Mac compatible because they make Mac compatible Blu-ray drives.
Not all optical drives (Blu-Ray, too) are Mac compatible.
    Where was this drive purchased?
it won't work with Blu-ray discs (and I suspect ANY discs) until you install some Blu-Ray playing software.
Here is a Mac only company that sells only Mac compatible drives and hardware.
    Other World Computing (OWC) (macsales.com).
    http://eshop.macsales.com/search/external+blu+ray
You still need to purchase BLu-Ray player and authoring software, though, with these drives.
