Installing a dual processor

Is it possible to drop in a dual 1.25ghz chip into a G4 "born" with a single core? I have a G4 single 1.25ghz MDD and see dual 1.25ghz chips on ebay all the time. Are the mobo's different?

Hi there and Welcome to Forums!
In answer to your question, I first need to know what MDD or MDD FW800 you have. There are two versions of the MDD, first is a 133mhz bus model and the 2nd, a 167mhz bus model. Since you have a single 1.25ghz MDD model logicboard, the answer is that you can install any dual processor you would like. What I mean is a dual 1.25 or a dual 1.42 + any of the sonnet processor upgrades of dual 1.6 and dual 1.8. For all purposes, I would go with the dual 1.25 since there really isn't much difference in speed and performance compared to the dual 1.42.
Also, you should consider replacing the heatsink with the copper one from a dual 1.42 MDD. These can be had on ebay or on www.mac-pro.com
The only mobo's that are different are the FW800 ones which are similar to the standard FW400 MDD's except for a FW800 connector, bluetooth, and airport extreme. The original and 2003 models of the FW400 based MDDs have the ability to boot into OS 9.2.2 natively while the FW800 can't. The FW400 models have no bluetooth, and only work with the original airport only. But, you can get a Belkin F5D7001 PCI wireless card which will allow your mac to access the internet at airport extreme speeds.

  • I cannot install Leopard 10.5 onto my PowerMac G5 (dual processor)

I have a new retail full install DVD of Leopard 10.5 and cannot install it to my PowerMac G5 (dual processor).  I bought a new disc, thinking it was the original.  Nothing!  I bought a new SATA 1tb hard drive...  Nothing!  I have reformatted until I can refomat no more.  I have tried to "Safe Boot", holding down C, Option, Shift, etc...  Can someone tell me what to do?

Hmmm, with the Leopard Install Disc in use Disk Utility to Verify the DVD, does that come out OK?
    If so ...
      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

  • How large of a hard drive can I install on dual G5, and do I need more RAM?

I recently had a situation in which my dual-processor 2.0 G5 was completely refurbished by Apple repair-new logic board, both processors, video card, thermistor, all new. Finally it has been working well after a month of trips back and forth from the Apple store. I have two internal hard drives installed on my G5, both 300GB, one for OS applications, and one for audio. I am running out of space on my main hard drive, and so I recently purchased a Maxtor 1TB hard drive, now manufactured by Seagate, from Fry's. After having my G5 refurbished, I was having an issue with my Samsung 930B monitor going into sleep mode when I boot-up from a CD, but other than that G5 was working fine. I removed the main 300GB hard drive from slot #1 and put it into slot #2, from which I had removed my audio hard drive. I installed the Maxtor drive in slot #1 and reformatted it for Mac using my laptop with ATA/USB cables previously purchased for data transfer. This took about 14 hours as I used the "zeros" option. After that I hooked up the internal cables to both drives and tried to boot up from Leopard in order to install it on the Maxtor drive, but again my monitor went into to sleep mode. We went to the Apple store to try to see if there was an issue with the computer, but everything worked fine with their monitors and CD's, as well as my CD. So there is some kind of issue with my monitor, probably software as it works fine when booting up from the main hard drive, and also was fine when I did its self-test function. While at the Apple store, they installed Leopard from their hard drive which took about 30 minutes.
My problem is this: When I arrived home, I turned on my G5, which had been set to boot from my new Maxtor drive and complete the Leopard setup process, which we had decided to do at home as it would have taken another 20 minutes in the Apple store. The G5 turned on, chimed, I got the Apple screen with the wheel, but then after that my monitor goes into sleep mode. I can hear Leopard's setup intro playing through the speakers, but the screen is in sleep mode. So I reboot holding down the option key so I can boot up from my old (300GB) main hard drive, now in slot #2. This works and the monitor screen does not go to sleep. However, as I am browsing on the web to check for issues concerning this monitor, the G5 freezes, and I get a screen with black bars with writing in them and various technical language across the screen. This happened several times after rebooting. Finally I shut the computer down. I am going to try removing the new hard drive and putting both old ones back in and see if the G5 stops crashing. I think the monitor issue is a separate issue, and I am more concerned with the crashing, as previous to the new hard drive installation the G5 was working fine, monitor fine, other than the issue when booting up from a CD. Do I need more memory? Is the 1TB hard drive too large for my dual-processor 2.0 G5 and overloading it? Would I be better off with a 500GB drive? Would appreciate advice from persons with experience in this area. Thank you.

I have replaced my 5 year old G5 with a Mac Pro, as the G5 just had too many issues, even after replacing all major components (logic board, both processors, video card, etc.) Once I took out the 1 TB hard drive from my old G5, it stopped having the kernel panic issue. Nonetheless I had been through a lengthy repair process previous to this issue, so I didn't care to trust an older machine any longer, especially since being told by an Apple tech that the "new" parts were really just older parts stockpiled from a central location. Could be new, could be refurbished. Apple was kind enough to credit the money we had spent on the G5 repairs towards the purchase of my Mac Pro.

  • What is causing a PowerMac G5/2.3GHz Dual Processor sudden abrupt shutdowns

    Hi all
I am posting in hope that someone out there can help me solve this very puzzling problem.
The machine: A PowerMac dual processor G5/2.3GHz (early 2005). 1.5G RAM. 250G HD. SuperDrive. Radeon 9650.
The problem: When under some load, this machine will suddenly and abruptly shutdown as though someone pulled the power cord. There is no warning. Just a soft click, and it powers off. The machine can be manually restarted after the sudden shutdown with no problems.
This problem is very replicable. (eg go to a particular website, play an embedded video, and boom, the machine shutsdown. Each and every time.) It was replicated at an Apple Store and at two Apple Authorized Service Providers.
System.log said "PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122"
Before the sudden shutdown, the machine seemed to be operating normally. The fans did not noticeably speed up. Activity Monitor showed no more than 50% CPU activity for each CPU. Temperature on both CPU was around at 70C before the sudden shutdown. Temperature and activity on both CPU goes up and down in tendem.
If I use the Energy Saver system preference to change "Processor performance" to "Reduced", the problem goes away. (As measured by going to the same website and playing the same video. Even playing 5 videos simultaneously did not cause a sudden shutdown.)
What have I done #1: I have reformat the hard drive with a 7-pass security wipe, followed by a clean-install of Tiger which was then brought up-to-date using Software Update. I then installed Safari 4.0.3. No other software is on the machine except Tiger and Safari. (Later installed Hardware Monitor to get me a handle on the temperatures.) The problem persisted.
What have I done #2: I then installed a new PRAM battery and reset PMU using the switch on the motherboard. Resetting the PMU also resetted the PRAM. The problem persisted.
What have I done #3: I then took the machine to an Apple Store. They found that they can replicate the problem easily. But, after 3 days of running the Apple Service Diagnostic, the diagnostic software didn't find any problem. They also did a thermal re-calibration. That didn't help either. Without an error code from the diagnostic software, the only "solution" the Apple Genius offered was to start swapping CPU, power supply and mother board at my expense. And even then, he has no idea which component to start swapping first. (Two independent Apple Authorized Service Providers offered the same non-diagnosis and roughly the same "solution".)
Has anyone encountered such a problem before? What was the solution?
How about an educated guess as to what's wrong?
I want to, if possible, and if reasonable, repair this machine.
    Thanks in advance.
    Lara

This sounds almost exactly like the problem I have. My G5 is also an Early 05 2.3G. I tried every tip I found on the forums from UPS vs. wall socket to stock RAM vs. 3rd party to booting from external HDs, etc.. I currently have 10.5.8 on it and it's running using the "Reduced" processor setting in Energy Saver prefs.
I have also made a trip to The Apple Store where the AS folks ran their diagnostics but were usable to replicate my problem. I understand they "can't fix it if it ain't broke".
Aside from the "Reduced" setting work-around has ANYONE actually solved this problem definitively? Although I have no interest in spending $1000 to fix this, I can't imagine disposing of it on Ebay.
Assuming this is a hardware issue, this would mark the first insurmountable failure of any of the 10 or so Macs I have owned.
    Anyone? Anyone?

  • Why can't I download 10.4 for my G4 Dual Processor?

I have an older G4 500 mHz Dual Processor Mac and two other macs (iMac & new MacBook Pro). I just purchased Adobe CreativeSuites3 and realized I can't install on my oldest Mac without upgrading the System software. I want to have the same version of CS on all Macs. I looked into upgrading to Leopard and discovered it won't work with my G4. So I went to upgrade from 10.3.9 to 10.4 and it appears that Apple will no longer sell a new version of 10.4! Am I looking in the wrong place? Will my G4 successfully run 10.4? How do I purchase a copy of it?

Tiger is available at many online retailers. Price Grabber has several listed. Make sure to get the full retail version.
Personally, I would stay away from E-Bay. A lot of machine specific versions get sold there, and unless you know what you are looking for, you'll end up with a disk that doesn't even work on your Mac.

  • CHUD on a dual processor MDD running Leopard (10.5.8)

I finally got around to installing CHUD today and am wondering if some of you folks who have used it for a while might have some easy answers to a few questions.
I first tried version 3.5.2. It installed, but I couldn't adjust any of the settings. I then read on japamac's site that some MDD's could use 4.4.4. I installed that version and it does work (In fact, I'm posting this with one processor tied behind my back). However, there does not seem to be an option for nap mode.
Also, after I toggle between single an dual processor mode a few times, performance in dual mode seems to take a big hit. A restart solves the problem, but I'm wondering if this is normal.
Is there any way to get nap mode to work in a dual cpu MDD running 10.5.8?
Is there any way to get it to stay in single CPU mode when it wakes from sleep?
I read through the discussions at xlr8yourmac before posting this. It appears that some people have been able to get nap mode to work under Leopard, but they are not always careful to mention exactly which version of Leopard and CHUD they are using.

    Hi-
When installing CHUD, it is also necessary to run CHUD remover to deinstall previous installations.
If not deinstalled, odd stuff happens.
3.5.2 is the one for dual processors.
Other versions have mixed dual processor support.
This is one of the claims that 4.4.4 works, but I have lingering doubts

I may need to edit my blog page.....
It takes a script for automatic Nap enabling in a dual processor machine with 3.5.2.

  • Cannot upgrade my Power Mac G5 Dual Processor (CPU type: PowerPC G5  (3.0))  to Mac OS 10.4 - anybody knows how to do this

Trying desperately to upgrade my Power Mac G5 Dual Processor to Mac OS X.4 - what kind of upgrade is needed? How may I proceed?

    Hello Jens,
Might be easier to get Leo/10.5.x
    Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
        * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
        * Built-in FireWire
        * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
        * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
        * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)

    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.

  • Oracle Database on Dual-Processor Servers

    Hello All,
I am contemplating on transferring my two instances of oracle 10g rel1 rdbms to a dual processor server from a single processor one.
What advantages will I gain? Is it really worth it?
I will appreciage any ideas, suggestions, comments, etc.
Thank you and with warm regards

    Hi Justin,
Thank you very much for your reply.
Acutally, the instances running on my database server our production and development databases. The server would still host the two instances. BTW, my server is a Linux box (RHEL ES 4.0) with 3GB RAM running an intel XEON 3.0Ghz CPU (HP-Compaq ML-350).
I have Grid Control installed in a Windows 2003 where I manage the two instances and when I monitor the databases, I always get alerts that the CPU and memory utlizations are very high, in the high 90s (%).
Last night, I was informed that our server room will be made as location of an additional database server that will host databases for HR,Procurement,Inventory and Logistics and we will be the DBA for that. User base would be around 40 simultaneus online users at a any given time plus or minus 5 users. Total possible users will be around 100. Operation is from 7am to 6 pm, weekdays.
For this server, we have proposed dual processor (intel XEON) and 4GB RAM. Would this be enough to meet our incoming requirements?
    Thank you and regards,
    Mike

  • Need? firmware update on 1.8GH Dual processor G5 PwrMac for Tiger upgrade.

Equipment: refurbed 1.8Ghz PowerMac Dual processor, running OS10.3.9 Panther just fine. CPU's: PowerPC 970 (2.2); Bus speed: 900MHz. Boot Rom: 5.1.4fo
I read on Forums of problems some single processor 1.8 G5's have had with firmware updates prior to attempting to run OS 10.4.3 . I was about to install Tiger 10.4.3, now wonder if it will open a can of worms if I update firmware prior to the install. The reported problems were on machines with bus speed of 600mHz; as mine has a 900mHz bus speed, am I not likely to encounter that difficulty? I would appreciate any input from those familiar with this issue. Sounded like some of the affected owners were really stuck for a long time with that particular problem. Thanks.

Since you did not specify which particular model you have, it's hard to tell you whether a firmware update is even required. Open System Profiler and in the summary look for the Machine Model. If it's 7,2 then 5.1.4 is the current firmware version. If it's 7,3, then 5.1.8 is the current firmware version.

  • Migrating from single processor to dual processor Callmanager

    Hi Networkers,
had anyone install a Callmanager 4.1 dual processor version of CM4.1-K9-X345D= before in a single CPU in a dual processor capable server before.
Can it work in the first place?
Had anyone successfully migrate it to a dual-processor later on?

I dont think there is any difference in Callmanager software for a dual processor versus single processor server. For 7845 (dual processor) the hardware detection disks may be different from the one for single processor (7825, 7835)
Migrating from one to another is as easy as taking a BARS backup from one server, build the other server to the same version and restore it. (Make sure server name and ip are the same for both servers)

  • HELP! Dual processors not seen. What happened to them?

I have a twofold problem, both on AGP Graphics machines with the Sawtooth boards. I purchased mine used about a year ago and it came with a dual 550 processor upgrade installed. It works great, but somewhere recently, maybe after my latest upgrade (10.4.8) I checked my system profiler and it now shows the processors as dual 500s. It used to say dual 550. Any idea where the other 50s went? Could this be a glitch in the OS that doesn't allow it to see the the extra gHz? I may try zapping the PRAM, but do you think it's because of the software? I'm baffled. The other part of my problem is I just upgraded the other AGP machine with a dual 500 from a gigabit ethernet unit. It showed up fine as a dual 500 in the profiler. Then I swapped in a 160 gig internal and popped the OS on it and relegated the smaller, second internal into a storage drive, erasing the OS on that one. After doing that, it just shows up in the profiler as a single 500. Weird. I've never heard of a dual processor losing half and still work fine on the other. As I said before, it was showing up fine until I installed Tiger on the new drive, transfered the info from the previous system via the installer, and now, only one processor shows. Any ideas or suggestions for both machines? Particularly the one missing the entire half of the processor? Thanks!
    G4 Dual 550   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.2 GB RAM, 380 GB Storage, DVD Burner/Handy Slide-Out Cup Holder, USB2, TV Tune

I am having the same problem. I have a 160GB drive I've been using for years with 10.3 installed. Took that one out and started fresh with 2 160GB drives (one WD and one Maxtor, both 8GB cache)and set them up as "concatenated" RAID set in Disk Utility (while booted from Tiger disc). Installed Tiger, only shows ONE 450mhz processor in Activity Monitor and System Profiler. And it's definitely only running one processor because my Mac is running VERY slow. I went back to the original 160GB drive running 10.3x and everything is fine, 2 450mhz processors showing and fast as ever.
I've been searching apple support, google and the like but no answers. PLEASE HELP!!!
    Thanks, Eric

  • Running dual processor on early Quicksilver board

I'm back to a Sawtooth because my 1ghz dual processor is panicking. Diagnostic in Tiger says the external cache is bad and I understand that I have to shut the cache off every time I boot by if I use CHUD to disable the L3 cache ( which I am very scared to do).
Because I'm more a MacButcher, I figure that running the dual processor on an earlier (733mhz) board which doesn't have the rom to enable the L3 cache might be a possible workaround. I'd then swap motherboards and run the dual limping a little on the earlier motherboard and slip the 733mhz processor in the later board and resell.
Does this all sound possible? What should I watch for? I realize the dual processor would run slower than intended, but it would be better than using the 500mhz Sawtooth and cheaper than buying a new processor.

    Hi
I could be wrong, but I thought the level 3 cache was only not recognised if you installed a Quicksilver processor card in a Sawtooth or Gigabit Ethernet logic board, as these originally came with G4 variants that didn't have any level 3 (just level 1 on the processor die and level 2 on the processor card). If the 733MHz logic board is from a Digital Audio or Quicksilver, I wouldn't be surprised if the level 3 cache was recognised, as these shipped with G4 variants that could support level 3 (regardless of whether Apple actually chose to provide the extra cache on some of the models). I'd be surprised if there were any boot ROM differences - I'd imagine it just says if there's level 3 cache available then use it. That way Apple could have one unified logic board/boot ROM and just drop in different processor cards with or without level 3 cache. There are some reports in the CPU Upgrades database at xlr8yourmac.com which seem to suggest a 733MHz Quicksilver can be upgraded with a card pulled from another QS and the level 3 will be recognised.

  • Any process to follow if we keep the dual processor

    Hi all of u,
I am using Oracle 10g. My question is, In the Windows 2003 Prof. single processor i installed the Oracle 10g server. After that we ordered the dual processor for this server system. Now What to do this, shall i deinstall the oracle 10g and install again in this machine or it will run as usual.
Any process to follow if we keep the dual processor.
    Oracle 10g Version 10.2.0.1.0
    OS: Microsoft Windows 2003 Prof.

Thank u for al u r reply. I understood, but i want to know is any changes made to any parameter in that database folder to improve the performance after keeping multiprocessor to the server system.
I mean to say that in the books it has given that " PARALLEL PROCESSING CAN HELP IMPROVE PERFORMANCE IN SITUATIONS WHERE LARGE AMOUNTS OF DATA NEED TO EXAMINED OR PROCESSED, SUCH AS SCANNING LARGE TABLES, JOINING LARGE TABLES CREATING LARGE INDEXES AND SCANNING PARTITIONED INDEXES.
PARALLEL PROCESSING REQUIRES MORE PROCESSING MEMORY, AND I/O RESOURCES THAN SERIAL PROCESSING.
So any parameters to add to improve the performance of the database when we install multiprocessor in server system.
    Thank u..

  • Compile c programs to use dual processors

I am trying to optimized a c program to run in a SunBlade 1000 with 2 processors.
gcc installed in the mchine is version 2.95.3.
If I want to compile the program to use both of the processors, how should I proceed? I read the gcc manual, also did some google searches, but did not get it to work.
I would appreciate your input very much.

The most straightforward way for this to happen would be if gcc had implemented openMP (which as far as I know, it has not). If you are set on using the GNU compilers, you'll have to create multiple threads to take advantage of the dual processors on your SB 1000. Describing how to write a multi-threaded app is considerably beyond the scope which could be addressed in this medium. You can start by reading up on multi-threaded programming and playing with the functions in libthread. Look at the man pages for thr_create and you'll find some simple examples to get you going. If you are open to using the Sun compilers Sun One Studio Compiler collection, the compiler can do some of the hard work for you. If you included openMP pragmas, it can do an even better job.
