Installing a RAID array with XP installed already????

I have a MSI-7125 NEO4 ultra platinum board
I have a SATA hard drive with XP already installed on it which was installed without RAID.
Iis it possible to use that drive  as the bootable drive in a RAID
mirroring Array?????????
If it is possible how do you do it?
If i try and install the Array it wants to install XP into unpartitioned space. It cannot see the bootable partition.
thanks

Afraid not. All data is lost as the raid data is held in stripes across the rai discs
For striping, yes, that would be very true, but it sounds like he wants to set up a mirrored array.
In the case of a mirrored (RAID-1) array, it might be possible to set it up on the fly like this.  What you'd have to try is going into the RAID controller software and telling it that it needs to rebuild (*not* create a new one) a RAID-1 array using the data on your current drive.  There's no guarantee that it will work (probably depends on the controller, and if it adds any special headers/flags to RAID-1 arrays), and if it does it is likely that Windows will no longer boot properly until you do a rescue install or manually edit your boot.ini file.  This is because creating the RAID-1 may change the hardware address of the drive, and when Windows goes to boot from the old hardware address, there's nothing there anymore until the old address is updated with the new one.
Anyways, if you want to do a RAID-0, there's no way while preserving your current data.  Doing a RAID-1 might be possible, though still potentially problematic.

  • How do I set up a RAID array with an external hard drive?

Im trying to backup my hard drive onto a 250 GB external hard drive (connected by Firewire) via a RAID 1 configuration. What is the best way to do this?
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Intel-based, Windows XP Pro is installed via Boot Camp

There are times when a mirror is fine. SoftRAID in their example of uses, has a situation with someone who doesn't backup, has a laptop (where failures seem higher) and might also want to be able to take the external mirror and take it with them.
One backup is never enough. What if something goes wrong during the backup? power failure or crash? the backup is now corrupt.
Having a mirror and a 2nd copy would be fine. And you can do that. I find DVDs have been too small and slow in the past to use regularly, I use disks, and burn a DVD of important stuff on a 3 month or longer basis, and some stuff is even less.
so while there is always going to be "mirror raid is not a true backup mantra" it is still useful for what it does. Even if it is instant and copies the good and bad. Just don't rely on it as your ONLY backup, you should have another disk drive as well (and DVDs).
Also, FW400 is not a speed daemon - 35MB/sec or less is not uncommon.

  • Can't create raid array in 10.4.6

I am trying to create a mirrored raid array with two Fantom USB 2 external harddrives using disk utility.
I am unable to drag the image of any hard drive into the right window and the create button is never activated.
I have restarted, verified the disks and so on. I hve tried to select a different external disk but that won't work either.
    Any ideas what's up.

You can try updating the drivers from the makers site, but it could be that Apple won't allow USB drives to RAIDed.
Unless your recording ET or something where a hard drive failure could mean disaster, mirrors are not ideal form of backup.
Consider auto-cloning and auto-backup software like DeJaVu or Retrospect.
What this will do is give you the benefit of time, cloning will "clone" a whole boot drive and make it bootable in case you need it. (You can clone a whole non-boot drive as well.) Auto-backup will copy user type files and folders, but it's not designed to copy a OS from one drive to another.

  • Advice needed installing XP Pro onto RAID Mirror with XP Home on IDE already

    Hi Y'all,
I have the rig described below.
Currently, I'm running Win XP Home SP2 booting on the 80gig IDE drive, with another partition on it holding my files.
I want to clean install XP Professional SP2 (slipstreamed) onto the 120gig SATA Mirror RAID array and use that as the boot drive. This is empty but has been formatted and partitioned so the system recognises it as a drive.
Once that's done I want to wipe off XP Home and use the IDE drive as a pagefile and backup drive.
I had thought of doing it this way:
    1. Prepare floppy with SATA RAID drivers v1.0.0.19 (Files: fasttx2k; txtsetup.oem; Fasttx2k.cat; fasttx2k.INF; fasttx2k.sys; README.TXT)
    2. Erase all partitions on the RAID mirror but leave both physical drives installed
    3. Remove the IDE drive
    4. Boot from Win XP Pro SP2 CD ROM and install the SATA drivers at the F6 prompt
    5. Continue WinXP install as normal onto the RAID drive
    6. Reconnect the IDE drive after OS has installed
    7. Select Win XP Pro as the OS to boot
    8. After bootup erase Win XP Home partition
    9. Partition the RAID drive to have 2 partitions, one (C:) for the OS, the other (D:) for my files
    10. Use Files & Settings Transfer Wizard to repopulate the OS with my stuff (previously exported to a safe place).
    11. Get on with life...
Can anyone please advise if they forsee any problems doing it this way.
Just to show that I am really confused, advice I've read in the Windows XP Forum says I should break the mirror before doing trying to install any OS to a RAID array and use just one of the physical 120gig SATA drives to install XP Pro onto. Once this has been done I should rebuild the mirror and the drives will automatically become mirrored once the data has been duplicated to the 2nd SATA.
Is this the only way to do this? Is this the best way to do this (does WinXP install badly to a mirror RAID that has already been created)?
Advice I've already read on the forum here has only confused me further because:
    a) it assumes a level of knowledge that I don't seem to have
    b) it doesn't deal with my exact circumstances.
    All help gratefully received.

    An update on the situation.....
I am trying to install Win XP Pro SP2 (slipstreamed) onto a RAID Mirror of 2 Hitachi Deskstar SATA drives on my MSI K7N2G-ILSR. This is the exact procedure I've followed:
    1. Formatted (both SATA drives) as drive I: using Windows Disk Management tool in WinXP (The mirror is seen by the BIOS & Fastrak BIOS)
    2. Started Win XP Pro install via CD in d:\
    3. Pressed F6 when requested
    4. Windows Setup loads normally
    5. Options to install 3rd party drivers for mass storage devices & other things appear
    6. Press S to start installing RAID drivers
    7. Insert floppy into A:\ & press Enter
    8. Select Promise Fastrak 376 Win XP driver
    9. Get following error message:
File \WINXP\fasttx2k.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 2113 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\oemdisk.c.
    10. Press Enter to continue
    11. Setup doesn't recognise the SATA drive I: so it doesn't appear in the list of partitions on which to install XP Pro
I've tried it every which way.
The following with IDE1 HDD disconnected, i.e. no operating system installed:
1 SATA drive only (mirror broken)
    1 SATA drive striped array
    Both SATA drives (mirror functional)
The same with IDE1 HDD connected and starting Windows Setup from within XP Home...
The only difference is if I use the original Win XP Pro disc (without SP2 slipstreamed) when the error message changes to:
File \WINXP\fasttx2k.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 2108 in d:\xpsp1\base\boot\oemdisk.c.
In a thread here there is mention of an error in a file but it isn't directly related to my mobo, so I am reluctant to fiddle with the file unless someone can explain clearly what needs changing. I'm just trying to find the thread at the moment.....

    Change Boot sequence to CD-ROM> SCSI> HDD-0
Delete txtsetup.oem from floppy - Setup then says it's missing
Copied original drivers from nVidia driver & utility disk
None of these things has made the slightest difference

  • Problem Installing 817 on Windows 2000 with RAID Array

I am having a problem installing Oracle under windows 2000 which has 2 x 60 GB discs configured in RAID array. When I run the setup program the cursor goes busy for about 10 seconds and returns back to normal and nothing happens !. No errors nothing.
However when I run the Object Manager in the ods_preinstall directory it starts but in the log file I get the following error message:-

Any idea whats happening....? Has anyone seen this before. Do I need to do something special in teh RAID..?
    TIA

    Here are some possible solutions:
    1. The installation notes state that you must be logged on as Administrator to be able to install 9i. Are you logged on as the Administrator? Being logged on as user01 with Administrator priviledges isn't the same as Administrator.
    2. Is the disk full? If I remember my installation correctly, I needed 3 times the size of the files. The documentation will tell you how much space you need.
    Hope these two questions help

  • Installing Maverick on a MacPro with OS 10.7.5 and using RAID 1 with 2 * 1TB disks. 50% used.

I have a MacPro with 2* 1TB disks running Mac OS 10.7.5 using a RAID card running RAID 1. 50% space used.
How can I install Maverick safely (i have a Time Machine Backup). The install will not use the RAID set as a boot volume.
Reading the RAID manual there is discribed a way to create a bootabkle partition and RAID 5. But it starts out as a newly purchased configuration.
I have a used configuration. I would like to reuse the data.
Is there an installation section for my type of configuration?
    THKS for all help.
    Regards

I have found the answer myself already.
    1.     Take a full backup on a medium which also will restore.
    2.     Start your system with original start-up DVD.
    3.     Start RAID pgm. Dissolve your current RAID set.
    4.     Create a new RAID set with a logical volume on it.
    5.     Restore from your backup your current system.
    6.     Install Maverick on this system.

I am sorry if this is repeated in another thread, but I am struggling to find any information that could help with me installing Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on two SSDs in a RAID array in my MSI GX60 Destroyer. Windows keeps asking for drivers and cannot detect the SSDs during windows installation.

You would need RAID driver from AMD which MSI does not offer it for download.

  • Failed Boot Camp Install of Vista 32 has broken one of my RAID arrays

Attempted to install Windows through Boot Camp on my Mac Pro, I have a RocketRaid 2320 controller card, RAID was built through Disk Utility. No redundancy, I built 2 separate 1.8TB RAIDs (4 x 500MB drives) in each of 2 separate cabinets. Windows install attempt brought up the HighPoint BIOS, then failed to install Windows and I got the well-known "Select CD-ROM boot type" message. Now, one of the 2 RAID arrays appears to be broken. Disk Utility still sees all 4 drives, but only recognizes 3 of them as a RAID slice with a GUID Partition Table. The other shows up as "disk5s1" with a Master Boot Record as the partition map scheme. While much of what was on this array was redundant with the second, I have a lot of work that was only on this one, so any help in how to fix and/or reconnect the drives of this array would be incredibly appreciated!

    1. I remembered RocketRaid 2320 don't provide EFI64bit from Highpoint website so you can't set boot camp.
    2. Does your Highpoint raid management utility(Highpoint engineer also called WebGui)
provide any message for your broken raid?I am also a Highpoint user, I give you some suggestion:
A.(1)If your WegGui in Manage--Array show your broken raid status is "Critical"and your bad HDD, please replace bad HDD then select Maintenance items of upper right corner of the page
(2)This will open the Array Information dialog box, select Add disk button to choose the replaced HDD then press "Submit", you can rebuild your RAID array.
B.(1)If your WegGui in Manage--Array show your broken raid status "Disable", you just can use one of Webgui function--"Keep old Data"(But it still have high risks to lose your data, it is the final method to use, I suggest you try the A method best.)
    (2) Select "Maintenance" items of upper right corner of the page, from the "Array Information" dialog box, select "Delete" button, and prompted a warning: the array of data will be deleted whether to continue, choose OK..
(3)Back to Manage--Array page, this time the array has been deleted, double-click the "Create Array"
button to display the page to create the disk. From the Initialization Method field select “Keep old Data”, the remaining arrays in strict accordance with the original set of parameters, the required attention parameters include: Number of RAID member disk, Array Type, Block Size, Sector Size.
(4)Click "Create", the initialization process will start automatically, RAID
recovery complete, prompts to create a successful, choose OK.
(5)See your volume in Mac Disk Utility if your data is recoveryed

InDesignCS3 was downloaded from the internet. CS4 suite was installed from CDs. Both are currently on my computer. How can I uninstall InDesignCS3?

Just use the add/remove programs feature in the control panel, but I would strongly suggest that you don't do this. If you ever need to supply a CS3 file you'll be sorry you uninstalled it.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Most of the applications compatible with Lion are also compatible with Mountain Lion, so you shouldn't have any problem. Mountain Lion supports the latest update for Parallels 7 and 8, so if you haven't got one of these versions, you should upgrade it before upgrading Mac OS X. That application uses extensions, so it may cause kernel panics

Creating RAIDs is discussed in Disk Utility Help from the DU Help menu. If you plan to install OS X on the RAID then the RAID must be set up before installing OS X. DU can be launched from within the OS X installer.
There are no current restrictions. In general use drives of the same make and model for best performance.
Drives must be partitioned using GUID partition mapping and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. Partitioning and formatting are also discussed in Disk Utility Help.
You do not need a RAID card as you can create a software RAID using Disk Utility.
