Installing a WRT160N with another router

Hello, I just bought a Linksys WRT160N Broadband Router. I have to connect it to my DSL-Router (192.168.1.1). I followed the setup instructions choosing option "I want to keep my other router". At the end I get the error "Internal Error 302". And no Internet on the PC connected to the WRT160N. Does the setup give a default IP address to the router when 192.168.1.1 is already in use? If yes which address? If I could access to the Web Linksys tool I may find a way to make it work... Help anyone? Many thanks in advance. Yves

Disconnect the DSL router from Linkssy router ....
Change the LAN Ip of the linksys router to 192.168.2.1 ...power it down ...then connect the DSL router ...
See if it works ..

  • Just bought new time capsule- need help setting up WiFi network with another router

    Here ismy situation.
I had a wireless network setup up at home using a Belkin wifi router.
I have 2 macBooks (1 pro, 1 air) and 2 iphones that connect wirelessly and a desktop PC that is hard wired to the ethernet port.  In addition, I have a Verizon wireless network extender plugged in by ethernet.  All of the hard-wired gear is in our 3rd floor attic office (and the wireless signal was strong throughout the house).
The Belkin wifi router was plugged into a wall ethernet jack that is in turn wired into a Linksys router in the basement (along with multiple other ethernet ports througout the house) and is hardwired to the Cable modem next to it.  All of the hard-wired ethernet stuff (including the router in the basement) was there when we bought the house, and I have no clue in the tangle of wires how to sort them out (but don't really think I need to)
I just purchased a TimeCapsule to do wireless backups of my 2 macbooks, and tried to set it up alongside the existing wireless modem.
Needless to say, this did not work well. I called  AppleCare, and was told that the TimeCapsule needs to be the "1st" wireless adapter, so I went into the basement, and connected the time capsule directly to the cable modem, and then out to the basement router.  The Belkin router still needs to be in the attic to supply the PC and the Verizon adapter (so it is near a window for GPS signal).
If I try to name the WiFi network the same SSID on both the TC and the belkin router (to have dual signal strenth coverage) the whole thing gets messed up and the TC cannot be "found" by the aiprort Utility software.
What I have done now is that I have 2 side-by-side wireless networks with 2 unique names (actually 3, because I enabled the 5Ghz signal on the TC), but our wireless devices do not "switch" automatically from one SSID  to another stronger signal SSID as we move through the house
Here's the question: How do I name them the same so that the devices will switch effortlessly to the stongest signal?  I understand it involves switching the "channels" but don't know how to do it right now.  Currently, everything works, so I don't want to mess it up tinkering.  Another caveat- there are several other wireless networks from neighbors houses that I can "see".  I jsut downloaded a program called iStumbler that shows the channels, but not sure what to do with that info.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

OK.. sounds like a mess.. or at least messy and the previous people should have left a log book with all the IP address info in it.. you have far too many routers.. but from here it is impossible to tell how they are configured. Most are probably just setup as AP.
Naming rule for wireless.. Same SSID same security different channel.
SSID ie wireless name to work on the PC side should have no spaces and no special characters. TC name should also follow that rule. So the devices need to all set with fixed channels.
Don't worry too much about iStumbler and what is outside your house.. there isn't enough channels at 2.4ghz anyway. And you are going to need to use them all. There are only three non-overlapping channels. 1, 6, 11 so set each device to one of those channels. The TC should be as close as you can to where you normally use the MacBooks.. and turn on the 5ghz. You will have to leave it to automatic name so the Macbook can also roam across from 2.4 to 5ghz. But if you care to use a different name and force it onto 5ghz the speed is much better as long as you are in the same room.
Roaming is great in theory.. often in practice it just doesn't work.. you need to step in and turn off wireless and then turn it back on.. you can quickly see which router it is connecting to by hold down the option key when you click the airport fan in the top menu area.. and look at bssid.. you will have to figure out which number MAC address relates to which router.
Also do not be surprised if Lion gives you issues. It seems to often drop out and lose connection to the TC as a backup device even if internet is still working.

  • Replacing HH2 with another router

    Hi folks,
I'm going to be replacing the HomeHub v2 with a shiny new Netgear WNR3500L sometime in the next few days.
A quick question (or two, actually ) - 1. What's the "recommended" procedure for installing a new router? I'm assuming that it's something along the lines of "1. Power down all network equipment; 2. Power down HH2; 3. Power down OR modem" then just doing the reverse of the above to connect the new router.
Second question - When I initially set the new router up, obviously I will have to configure the web interface to connect via PPPoE and use the HH's login credentials - Will this cause the OR modem to resynch? I obviously don't want too many resynchs, as I have a max profile which I would like to keep tyvm.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts/suggestions/help.

loonboy In message 10 of THIS thread has done a similar thing, and appears to be easy....
"the home hub 3 is jsut rubbish, i tried every setting in there and ended up buying a new router myself
i got the netgear n750 and i got to say it was just plug in and throw the setup disk in ti and it was away".

  • Using WRT54G and WET11 with another router as the Gateway

I have a wired network in the house with access to the Internet through a router on the 2nd floor. I connect a ReplayTV DVR in the basement to the network with a Cat5 cable running across the floor between the DVR and a switch. I'd like to replace that with a wireless solution.
I have at my disposal one WET11 bridge and two WRT54G routers. Neither of those routers is the one connecting the house to the cable modem. Is there a way I can connect one of the WRT54G routers to a switch in the basement and have it talk to the WET11 connected to the DVR on the other side of the basement?

I made some progress, but then ran into a couple of snags. I'm not routing with the WRT54G so I connect it to a switch through one of the 4 ports that is not the one labeled Internet. The network looks like this:
    Cable Modem --> Netgear Router --> Switch --> WRT54G(port 1)
    Laptop --> WRT54G(port 4)
With that cable arrangement I was able to log in to the WRT54G's administration page from my laptop, give the WRT54G a name and change it's IP address to 192.168.1.251. I left the subnet as 255.255.255.0.I also started to configure some other settings, but I did not write them down. I was able to access the Internet from the laptop at that time.
I was also able to move the cable going from the laptop to port 4 on the WRT54G with the WET11 Ethernet Bridge and could access the Internet. And, I was able to remove the bridge, turn on the laptop's wireless capability and access the Internet through a wireless connection to the WRT54G.
I tried to access the WRT54G's admin page wirelessly, but was not able to get to the login screen. I ran out of time and set everything aside for a week. When I got back to it, I was unable to access the WRT54G's loging screen. I can still connect the laptop to port 4 on the WRT54G and reach the Internet, but I cannot do so using the bridge.
Is there some tool I can use to determine the IP address of the WRT54G? I tried resetting (using the button on the back), and I tried several IP addresses in addition to the one I'm pretty sure I used. I'm assuming that I'm trying to log in using the wrong IP address.
I have a second WRT54G that I can still log on to. However, I don't want to do anything with it until I understand what I did wrong with the first one. (Both of them are version 6.)
Another snag is that I was never able to get the setup program to find the WET11. It claimed that it couldn't find the one I had plugged into the laptop's Ethernet port, even though I was able to connect to the Internet using that bridge to the WRT54G. However, that does not work anymore.
Pointers as to what went wrong would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Questions on using a WRT110 on a network with another router

i dont know all the terminology for what im trying to do here so please bear with it and ill try to make it simple.
so i just got a wrt110 to replace a dlink i had that kept having the wireless go out on it.
the set up i had [and am trying to get back to] was like this:
an 8 port router going to a bunch of computers and into another room where it connected to a wireless router [WRT110] that in turn connected to a few other devices.
the set up i had before made it so that the main 8port router 192.168.0.1 would do dhcp and that passed through to the wireless router. that way everything was on the same 192.168.0.X network
what my problem now is that i dont know how to get the linksys WRT110 to passthrough the DHCP to things connected to it. so the 8port does DHCP and everything connected to that is 192.168.0.X but everything connected to WRt110 is 192.168.1.X so its like 2 seprate networks.
does anyone know what im trying to do is called? and anyone know how to do it?

    Do this -
Connect a computer straight to the WRT110 Router, Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop) connected to the WRt110 Router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
On the main Setup page change the Router's IP Address/IP Address to 192.168.0.2(this address should be unique) and Disable the DHCP Server and click Save Settings, wait for 1 minute, unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...
Connect the WRT110 Router from Ethernet Port 1 to the 8 Port Router on it's Ethernet Port or LAN Port...
Now computer's connecting to the WRT110 Router will get the IP Address from the 8 Port Router in the Range of 192.168.0.x...

  • Cascade E3000 with another Router

I am trying to add the E3000 to my existing network to provide Wireless Connectivity for my users.  The main router is a RouteFinder SOHO VPN (RF560).  The RouteFinder acts as a gateway and provides DHCP.  I do not want to change it's role or settings.  When I added the E3000 using a Lan-to-Lan connection to the RouteFinder, all users lost access to the internet.  As a quick fix as I was working on something else at the time, I just unplugged the E3000.  Now I am reading through Article 3733 that I was originally referred to and that has me changing the settings on the RouteFinder which I do not want to do.  Is there any way to accomplish adding this to my network without changing anything on the RouteFinder at all???  By the way...I am located in another state than this router and network.  I can call and have someone plug and unplug stuff but all of the configuration has to be done remotely.  Thank you in advance for your help.

If you connect the E3000 with its LAN port to your main router then you must disable the DHCP server on the E3000. You should also change the LAN IP address of the E3000 from the default 192.168.1.1 to a unused IP address inside your main LAN (e.g. if your main router is at 192.168.0.254/255.255.255.0 you could assign 192.168.0.253 or .1 similar)
I think the latest firmware of the E3000 may support internet connection type "bridge mode" which should be preferable in your case as you can use the internet port to connect to your main router.
Article ID 3733 doesn't say anywhere to change the IP address of the main router. You only change the LAN IP address of the second router.

  • Can Linksys router communicate/hookup with another router???

I am trying to set up a network for another computer.  Question is, can I set up a d-link router (stand alone, no hookup to internet, use as a reciever for a notebook,  connected to router with ethernet cable) connected with a ethernet cable?  The notebook is not wireless and card cannot be used,  that is why I need to use ethernet cable.
Hope this is not too confusing, but I want to hook up a notebook computer using a d-link router with ethernet cable, instead of a wireless card or internal wireless receiver in the notebook, ...........the internet comes in on a linksys wireless router and I want it to go wireless to the d-link router connected to the notebook with ethernet.
    Can this be done???
    Thanks in advance.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I was thinking that between the two routers, you would connect the two with an ethernet crossover cable vs. a normal ethernet cable. I just need verification that this could work. It's the same idea when connecting switches/hubs together. But, verification would be nice.

  • Can I install Windows XP with another CD than the recovery CD?

A friend of a friend ;) has a Satellite 5200. He cached a very bad virus on his Notebook, witch I couldn't remove after 2 hours of work, so I'd like to install Windows in order to "clean" the system. The problem is: he is just for visit here, and his recovery-CD is in his hometown, so I do not have the recovery-CD.
My question: can I use any other Windows XP CD - and then use the key, which I can find under the notebook? Does it have to be a "home"-CD too, or will any CD work - or will ONLY a Toshiba-recovery-CD work?
It's important for him - if it doesn't work he will buy a completely new Windows XP within the next 2 days. Because he pays me a little bit for my work, I cannot just try it out and then try it again the next day or so.
ps: how much does a new recovery-CD cost - ONLY the CD - when I purchase it an a local Toshiba dealer? I live in Germany.
    Thank you

    Hi
I agree with Silas. You can use an own original Microsoft Windows CD and install the OS on the Toshiba notebook.
All drivers can be found on the Toshiba page.
If you want to purchase the Toshiba recovery CD I would recommend contacting the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country.
Im not sure about the CD costs but I think its not expensive the single service points are responsible for the Recovery CD prices and this can be different from country to country

  • Cisco UC540 share LAN with another Router

    Hi Guys,
    Quick question....
Can a UC540 be used as generic device and not as a gateway on a LAN ?
I ask because we already have site to site hardware VPN with cisco RV series routers between 6 buildings and we dont wan to change it.
My idea was to have the following setup :
    SITE A:
192.168.1.1      LAN     Router RC220 ---> Connetced to WAN
192.168.1.2      LAN    UC540 with nothing connected on WAN port and static route to 192.168.1.1
    Is this a viable option/cheat ?
Like i said we do not want to change the RV routers/config for site to site and the fact that they are the default gateway....   and in this case i only have 1 public IP to perform the setup.
    thx!

Lol... yeah it does feel unorthodox .
The reason is that we already have all the "networking/site to site vpn" setup between all our buildings 6 of them (all cable with 1 static IP).
Now one of the managers decided to buy a IP phone system to test it. It's a UC540 with 4 lines FXS/FXO.
We already have it setup the way i mentionned above... i didnt want to make it my primary gateway yet as we want to test it.
First my reseller wanted to plug the WAN port of the UC540 to my actual LAN but that felt even more unorthodox.....
Any way the unit is up, at IP 192.168.1.2/24 and has a static route of 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 to 192.168.1.1
Seems to work....  but for some reason i cant get it to do email notification for voicemail.    config seems legit, can ping to the internet OK.  Option are enable... 24hours.... email is valid....  Even tried notification to my CELL and it doesnt work either....
The only thing is that i'm trying to use my ISP's SMTP server.... could this be the issue ??
and for the "advanced features on the UC540 outside interace" can i just use port forwarding on my WAN router to 192.168.1.2  or is there a technical limitation on the UC540 tha prevents that?
lol... so many questions... if the UC540 proves easy enough/reliable/versatile it might one day replace the RV220 that we currently use.
Thx for your time and sorry for the typos... tired like Hell
one last question :  My reseller told me not to do config on this device (UC540) via CLI as it might void the support we can get from cisco... ever heard about this ???
I love CLI and used to work only with that on my old ASA/3500 Catalysts/1800 etc........
    thx!

  • EA2700 Configuration with another router

    Hi,
I recently bought an EA2700 in hopes that it will make my connection faster, stronger signal and stable. However, this is not the case. The connections keeps dropping and the range is the same as my Verizon-FiOS router. Anyway, I'm hoping that a fix be distributed to address this issue. I can't return my router to the vendor anymore.
Now, since I have two routers, I want to be able to leverage EA2700's dual-band feature and the Guest-access feature but I can't make this as a main router since my FiOS router should still be able to supply IP addresses to my cable boxes, thus, I can't configure it as a Bridge. I'm thinking if I just split the IP distribution as follows:
    FiOS router: 192.168.1.2-110
    EA2700: 192.168.1.111-150
    Is that possible?
I'm not a network engineer so any suggestion/recommendation would be a great help!
    Thank you!

Hi there. Is it dropping on the wired or wireless internet connection? Have you tried to play around on the channels if it is a wireless intermittent connection issue? This particular router model has internet connection type option of Bridge mode but when the router is set to such it will act as a wireless access point or wireless bridge thus disabling  DHCP server as well as  Firewall, Access Restrictions, and Applications and Gaming.

I don't see anything in Help that shows when you already have transfered all the files over.  Why would it want to erase and sync when I already have all the music folder copied over?  I didn't have an issue when I had another technician copy from one laptop to another.  Home sharing is also on but not being recognized.

I suspect you only migrated the media folder instead of the complete working library. Either review the transfer process and copy over the entire iTunes folder from your old profile's music folder or see Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

It's in your Keychain on the computer you usually use to connect to your network - the "kind" will be "AirPort Network Password".
Your Keychain can be opened by using the Keychain Access program. It is in your Utilities Folder.
Open Keychain Access, and type airport in the search field. You will see a number of entries. Choose the one with the name of your wireless network, open it, and check the box next to "show password". Before it reveals itself you will be asked for your login password - the one you use to log in to your MacBook.
The network password will appear in the box.
    Quit Keychain Access.
