Installing airport card - iMac G5 with 10.3.9

No airport card is yet installed on my iMac G5 machine. I'd like to use it as a base station for a wireless network with a new MacBook Pro equipped with Airport Extreme.
Which airport card would I need to install in the iMac, where would I find such -- and will the wireless connection work given the iMac's 10.3.9 OS? My ISP is ATT, bless their cyber hearts...

An Airport Extreme card is required. There are a number of different ones that could work, but I don't have information on the particular type. You would need to open it up to see what the slot for it looks like and the physical space available. I would assume those models use a mini-PCI card. You also need to check if antennae are already installed in the computer, otherwise you will need them as well.

  • How do I get my newly installed airport card to work with SKY?

+This question was originally posted on the G5 iMac section, but I think in retrospect it would be better here. Sorry for my mistake Administrator+.
Here's an interesting one for all you good people. Just bought and paid for an airport extreme card to pop into my little lad's G5 iMac, running Tiger(gggrrrrrrrr etc).
Managed to install it without a hitch.
Trouble is when I try and set it up to work with my SKY router (UK) it keeps telling me that my password is incorrect. The fibber! I know it IS correct as it is the one that SKY gave us and that we have successfully connected both my wife's MacBook and my own MacBook Pro with.
I have tried messing about with all kinds of configurations, but the set up assistants seem more bothered about yapping on about airport base-stations and computer-to-computer networks.
Now don't go telling me I need to get a base station to make it work. Please.
Can anyone offer some sound advice?
It does work on and off though. It works more often when the other Macs in the house are running (What-the-flip???)

You can't. Theoretically, Thunderbolt devices that only transfer video and audio should work with Mini DisplayPort MacBooks like yours, but it's not the case of the Thunderbolt Display. Its firmware doesn't allow it to be used with non-Thunderbolt Macs, so you can't use the Thunderbolt Display with the Mid 2010 MacBook Pro.
Instead, you have to look for another screen, or you can get an adapter and connect the MacBook Pro to a TV

  • G4  867 installed airport card

I installed airport card and cant connect to my wifi and does not show me available networks

Hi Mike, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Is your Network 802.11b capable?
    Is the Antenna connected?
Does your Network use WPA2? If so, that Aiport card can only do WPA or WEP.

After installing Mavericks my iMac opens with the "rolling surf" desktop. I can then start my preferred desktop from a saved 'photo but when I retsart the iMac it reverts to "rolling surf". How can I get it to remember to open with MY choice rather than Apple's?

I did a little research on this, as I found some strange things with the .plist files.
It appears that Apple has changed the way that the plist files are handled, and there is now an extra step in the trashing-the-.plist-file fix:
    1. hold down the option key
    2. in the Go menu in the Finder, scroll down to Libary
    3. in Library, find Preferences
    4. in Preferences, find  com.apple.desktop.plist  and drag it to the trash.
    5. go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor
         1. Sort by Process Name and look for two processes named cfprefsd.
         2. Make sure you select the one that has your user account, not "root", listed as the User.
         3. Click the X up at the top left to kill that process
    5. restart
    6. this will generate a new .plist file, so you will have to reenter your preferences.
Sorry for the confusion. Could you try this and let us know-

  • Installed airport card into my imac G4 flat panel and now it work

I purchased an airport card from Mac-pro as Apple does not sell them anymore. I installed it into my IMAC G4 flat panel as per the instructions. Now, when I turn on the computer the power light comes on, and the screen is black and it really isn't making any noise, as though it is not starting up. It was working just fine before I installed this card!!!! can anyone help??!?!?!?!?

The following Apple article provides the details of
installing an AirPort card in the Flat Panel iMac
G4s. You may want to double-check it to see if you
might have missed something in the the installation
    process.
I installed the card properly, as per the instructions you forwarded to me. I did have some trouble getting the card to completly fit into place, one side seemed to go in easier than the other, but it did go in. Is there anyway to get this machine up and running again?

  • Older G4 with newly installed airport card

I recently installed an airport card into my G4. Everything works fine while I am using the ethernet.(cable down the hallway to my room) But when I try and use the airport card wirelessly to my router it does not work. It says it can not be found. My macbook pro works fine using the wireless connection as does my printer. Even when my G4 is sitting beside the router its a no go.

An airport extreme card, inside of a G5 PowerMac Tower, requires an
antenna; this usually sticks out the back and looks a bit like a "T" handle.
I'm not sure of the part number or if a reseller has them in stock.
I've seen elsewhere in these Discussion forums someone had
posted an image and more information about the OEM antenna.

  • AirPort Card & iMac G4

I have an iMac PowerPC G4 (igloo) with a CPU Speed of 1.25 GHz. I don't believe it has an AirPort Card, because when I click on "AirPort Card" in the System Profile it reads: "No information found." (I bought this computer from Apple in March 2005. (My AppleCare extended warranty ends in February 2008.)
I would like to bring this computer to my place of work and buy a new iMac from Apple (either the 20 inch or the 24 inch model) to replace this one at home. The computer guy at my small place of employment wants my connection to the Internet to be a wireless connection. (Right now I connect to the Internet at home with a wire plugged into a phone jack. I have DSL at home.) What I had been considering doing is getting a new laptop computer from Apple. He (the computer guy at my company) told me that would pose no problems because all new laptops come with wireless cards installed. But since speaking with him, I have been considering a different plan: I have come up with the idea that instead of getting a laptop, which I don't think I have all that much need for, I could simply bring this old machine to work and leave it there. My question is: is this computer capable of a wireless connection to the Internet? Is it just as capable as a newer laptop or newer desktop would be? Would the connection be an adequately secure one, or would I risk having data stolen by an interloper parked outside in an automobile, for instance? The computer person at my company has said that he will set up my laptop (so far I have only mentioned a new laptop) so that security breaches would be near impossible. So, my question now is whether using this old computer and the old AirPort Card that would go with it, would hobble the setup in any way, and especially as concerns getting a secure wireless connection to the Internet.
A secondary question I have concerns my keyboard. I have spilled coffee on it and it has never worked properly since. I use it because I know how to get around its weirdness. But what type of Apple keyboard should I get to replace it? Are all of the new keyboards sold in the stores compatible with the machine I describe?
    Thanks for any response.

The Airport Extreme card (refurbished) is fine.
    Fitting Instructions.
    <hr width="200">
The Apple Aluminium USB Keyboard that you linked to will work fine as a keyboard and USB2.0 hub but some features (i.e. special keys on the top row) require OS X 10.4.10 and won't work fully in 10.3.
This keyboard (link) is the one that originally came with your iMac and so works fully but only has a USB1.1 hub.

  • I need to re-install airport card

    Hello all,
I was trying to update my macbook pro (software update) and after the update was completed the i could not connect to my wireless network any more due to the fact that my airport card was missing. How it happened i do not know.
I need to re-install to be able to access the internet via a wireless network.
    Regards

    Duane,
I have just purchased an AirPort Express and I am trying to set it up! I can't get anything from it when I run the setup, just what I have mentioned previously. The express plugs in and had previously been recognized. Then I tried to hook up and installed printer to it HP 5610, and now it just blinks yellow and the Setup Assistant will not even run. I tried to uninstall the HP program and also the new programs for the AirPort Express, and think I really messed it up. Now I am just trying to get it back in shape. I am pretty sure that the HP printer will not work after some research on the web, so I am not concerned about, will just exchange it for another model. I am really concerned about getting the AirPort Extreme back in order and communicating with my Express.
Thank you again, and glad to be here

  • MacBook Pro 17" - Airport card not seen with certain OS

    I know this isn't supported but ...
I've had to install 2 systems on my MBP to be able to use Airport.
If I use the install disks that came with the machine - 10.4.8 - then I can see the Airport card and I can connnect OK.
I also want to use the machine as a Portable Netboot server so have got Server version 10.4.7 for Intel. The system runs fine but there is no info on the Airport card and therefore no Airport connection possible, I have tried to do the 10.4.8 update (thinking newer drivers may fix the Airport issue...), but as soon as it reboots and goes thru its startup, it doesn't get to login window and just shuts down.
I can run it in 10.4.7 Server but it would have been nice to have 1 OS not 2 ...
    Any suggestions ?

    Any ideas ?

  • Arrgh! (installed Airport card G4867... not showing up!)

i installed an airport card (salvaged from my powerbook g3) into my desktop G4867. every now and then (more so every time i boot up), the airport card isn't recognized by the computer.
    what gives?
i've repaired disk permissions, reset pram, opened the machine up to make sure the connections are solid, etc.
    "help!"
    -

I'd get them to send you another card.  If it works, great!  If not, then the connection on the computer is bad.  If that's the case, you can get a wireless PCI card or a wireless USB adapter, but the PCI card would be better.  Test it with another Airport card first though.

  • Blue Screen Stuck... Installed airport card into Power Mac G4,

everything was working fine. I got online, was downloading software updates while surfing the net, then I get a small black screen that tells me I need to restart my computer in several languages.
Now the computer only gets to the blue screen, the grey spinning dial/thinking wheel goes for a bit then its just BLUE... What has happened?
Does this have anything to do with electrical charges?
Didi I cause this by inserting the Airport Card? I didn't touch any other part of the machine.
I did not unplug the monitor only the ac cord.
Please give me some good news...

    Hi-
You have had a kernel panic. These are caused by software, or, hardware problems.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
Your first suspect would be the Airport card. To be sure, you need to examine the library/logs in Console. If you can get a copy of the panic log that coincides with the kernel panic, it will offer some clues as to the problem.
You could just remove the Airport card, and see if the system returns to normal. But, there may be other causes.
Try a safe boot. Restart, and immediately after the tone, hold down the shift key:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
If you are able to boot, check the logs in Console.
If not, try a single user boot, and run fsck. Restart, and immediately hold down "Cmd + s" keys.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
Whe the command line appears, type /sbin/fsck -fy and press return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Repeat until the "volume is OK" report is returned.
For now, see what the results of the above are, and please post back.
For further troubleshooting of kernel panics, see the following:

If you haven't already, disconnect all third party devices, both internal and external.

  • Just installed airport card but can't get a solid signal

a few weeks ago an electrical storm blew out my ehternet port. i consulted a mac genius at the apple store and decided to avoid replacing my logic board by getting an airport card and wireless router. After installing this business last night i was delighted to see full bars on the signal icon. but then it instantly dropped to two bars. then none. then a few minutes later back to two, full, none, etc. My computer and the wireless router are pretty much right next to eachother- i'm not splitting the cable between my machine and anything else (no other computers, not the tv). can anyone suggest what might be causing the signal problem? there's a major heatwave, would that cause problems? also, should i have looked into getting an aditional ethernet card instead? i'm desparately trying to avoid taking my machine out of my house (it's a desktop and i live in Queens so it's a b-tch to take into the city) so i'm really hoping to make this wireless buisness work. thanks so much!

j9fleri, Welcome to the discussion area!
One (or more) of the following must be true:
The antenna wire isn't properly attached to the AirPort card. Is this the original AirPort card or the AirPort Extreme card? If it is the AirPort Extreme card, use the photos in KB 108039, Properly attaching the antenna on an AirPort Extreme Card to verify that the antenna wire is properly installed.
You are experiencing some sever RF interference. See KB 58543, AirPort: Potential sources of interference.
The wireless router isn't working properly.

  • Installing airport card: please help me!

I have put it into my friends clamshell ibook g3,..following the right instructions for physical installation under the keyboard,. but when i turn on the laptop, no new hardware is detected, and there is none in the system properties, or whatever its called,.. So basically nothing happens,. Additionally, the software in the CD is already on the computer (as it is Mac OS X 10.3.9). Any ideas? Any weblinks that have more detailed advice about these problems? Is there any way of finding out if the card just doesnt work?
    Thanks very much,
    Michael

You should be looking to setup the airport card through the Network preference in System Preferences. Select "Airport" from the "Show" popup menu. You may have to "Select Network Port Configurations" from the "Show" popup and check "Airport" first in order for it to appear in in the "Show" popup.
Additionally System Profiler should list the Airport Card under the network area.
Note: there is no "new hardware detected" notification after installing new hardware under MOSX as there is in Windows.

  • Mac with airport card and PC with wi-fi card

    Hi!
I just bought my first mac, and strange, but I have problems connecting my mac via airport extreme card to my wi-fi card (as computer-to-computer or ad-hoc mode) on my PC. I am not using base station or any wi-fi router, just two computers with their internal cards.
PC has WinXP pro with SP2 and mac - imac g5. The problem is that both of the cards are enabled and are working on 100%, but they do not see each other! I tried to create a wireless network on my PC and then search for this network from mac and vice versa - nothing. By the way my notebook finds the PC's newly created network with no problem, but not the mac.
What could be wrong? Is it possible, that it's nessesary to use the base station with them?

  • Install Airport Utility 5.6 with 6.0

Got new iMac/OSX10.7.3 that has AU6.0 with a Time Capsule 7.6.1.
I've read that AU6.0 has got a load of features not included that AU5.X had
and I'd like to re-install AU5.6 for Lion to gain access to those older features.
What I need to know is if I install the previous version will it over write any
applications or packages that were installed with OSX10.7.3/AU6.0.
    A.

No, the two run along side each other.. just make sure you start v5.6 and not 6.0 when you need a utility as a verb rather than 6.0 which is a noun.. ie it is named a utility.. but cannot do anything.
