Installing AIrport Extreme card (which one? and WHERE?) in Dual 1.8 G5

I'm having an incredibly frustrating time trying to check out this (used) G5 which I thought, up until yesterday, might replace my G4 MDD. (Never mind that any topic I run a search for on the support.apple website returns NO results. Is it my antediluvian 10.3.9 and Safari 1.x--newest possible for that OS? But I digress...)
I keep running in a circle of Google search results that keep bringing me to a .pdf showing an AE card installation on a single processor G5. While not vividly clear in the illustration, the architecture seems to be different. I don't see the same "landmark" components here as in my G5. My Apple Support search difficulties have frustrated a search for a manual for this model.
Also I'm just now learning of the necessity of the Rube Goldberg-ian additional antenna that seems to be required. (As it sits, the G5 is about 3 feet away from the base station, but I guess I'll have to play along anyway and get one.) Having used an Airport card on a pre-Cambrian white iBook G3 >>>without any bloody antenna<<<, I find this too depressing to be laughable. ("...strain at a gnat and swallow a camel." --NASHVILLE, 1975; Robert Altman, dir.)
I'm under the assumption that this beast came BEFORE the late 2005 makeover that necessitates the Airport and Bluetooth combination card. Please correct if I'm wrong about this.
The card I bought on eBay is Model A1026 EMC No. 1951 (thinking an Airport Extreme Card is an Airport Extreme Card is an Airport Extreme Card...ain't that rich!)
Computer is YM425(XXXXXX) 1.8 GHz DP/256MB 400 80GB/SD/G5200/56K
I did the installation of the Airport (after having uninformedly bought an AE card first) card on the iBook, but I can't begin to see where one goes on the G5 desktop. I don't even see the connector cable that goes in the back of the card.
I feel like my good intentions have landed me at Alice's tea table while hardly being on the cutting edge of anything. I'm a sheet of paper's width (see below) from just jettisoning this thing back to Craigslist whence I fetched it.
(Although I've long waved the banner of "Think Different" superiority, I'm beginning there's not a sheet of paper's width of difference between the respective byzantine frustrations of Planet Jobs and Planet Gates. At least I didn't make the pricey leap all the way into the MacPro rabbit hole...)
To sum up: which AE card, where does it go, what else isn't Apple telling me and are there any specific links?

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
From the details you have given, your G5 requires the Airport Extreme! card
http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore?productLearnMore=M8881
The installation instructions are here
http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/apec_c.pdf
The antenna cables and connectors are pre-installed in G5s. The Airport Extreme! antenna connector, with the brass tip, is shown clearly if you click on photo #4 here
http://tersus.no/bluetooth/
(They are the Bluetooth instructions - the photo is for identification only)
You will need an antenna

which should have been in the G5 packaging (originally) - but can usually be picked up on eBay - or here

if not.
There is a G5 manual here

  • How to install AirPort Extreme card in eMac?

I just recently acquired a 2005 G4 eMac (the top-of-the-line model with the SuperDrive and 160 GB hard drive), and I am trying to install an AirPort Extreme card into it. Apparently I think the instructions must differ from this one:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2596
Since this is for the older AirPort cards.
I pushed the card in all the way, logo facing downward, screwed in the antenna, etc., but the Mac still won't recognize it! What should I do to get it working?

Numerous eMac users who installed Airport Extreme cards in the past have brought up that the Extreme card is a very tight fit in the eMac Airport slot, especially compared to the original Airport card. Often, the card appears to be fully seated, but is actually some fraction of a millimeter out. After seating the card according to all the instructions, you have to push hard on the edge of the card to get it to really seat all the way, hard enough to just start to push the 50-lb eMac away from you (don't try this with the eMac on the very edge of the table or desk!). I ran into exactly that putting an Extreme card in my in-law's eMac, and I had already read other's warnings; that may give you some idea how firmly you really need to push the card once it feels as if it's seated.

  • My eMac can't find installed airport Extreme card

    Hello everyone,
Having bought a netgear wireless modem for a wi-fi connection, I was told to install an airport extreme card on my eMac, which I did - several times. But the eMac says he can't find when I look for it, either in the internet setup or in the general information about the hard and software. I also installed the accompanying software. Why can this be ? Thanks for your advice!
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It's an eMac (USB 2.0) model. I'm not certain I should try to push the card in more ? Are those cards defective frequently ?
Which eMac do you have? You can use KB 86325, eMac: How to locate the serial number
and identify your model to determine which model
    you have.
If your eMac is the "eMac (ATI Graphics)", "eMac (USB
2.0)", or "eMac (2005)" the AirPort Extreme card is the correct
    wireless card.
If your eMac is the "eMac", it requires the original
AirPort card and is not compatible with
    the AirPort Extreme card.
Assuming that your eMac is compatible with the AirPort Extreme card, one or more of
the following must be true if the eMac is not
    detecting the card.
    The card is not installed
    correctly.
    The card is defective.
    The
    eMac's motherboard is defective.

  • Installing Airport extreme card for 2008 Mac Pro

After some searching I finally found which airport extreme card to get for my 2008 Mac Pro that I just purchased recently . According to the the link below in the Apple archives it is part number MB363Z/A. However the link further down in the thread for the instructions on installing the card doesn't seem to work any more. Anyone know where to find another link for some detailed instructions or pics on installing the card. I haven't found any as of yet. I installed the old extreme card in my G5 pretty easily, but this seems a little more involved in the Mac pro from what I've read so far.
    thanks, Craig

Ok never mind I found the old link seems to work now with detailed pics and instructions. Sounds like it's a bit of a pain but can be done with patience. Just have to get the card now.

  • Installing airport extreme card in a macbook pro

need help replacing the airport extreme card in my macbook pro. need details on how to do it

Without an airport extreme card, there won't be any Wifi signals going to and from the router (unless you have your machine hooked up via ethernet cable, in which case you don't need an airport card because the signal is transmitted through the cable). Most Macs have a card installed - which Mac do you have?

  • IBook G4 won't start up after installing Airport Extreme card

    Hi,
just installed an Airport Extreme Card into girlfriends iBook G4 (10.4.5), which now won't start up. After pressing the start button all I hear is the fan spin (pretty fast actually), but nothing else happens.
When I remove the card the iBook starts up normally.
Any thoughts what could be wrong? Bad card? Bad connection?
    Thanks a lot

Sven, Welcome to the discussion area!
Are you certain that you have an AirPort Extreme card?
Are you certain that it is an iBook G4? The iBook G3s require the original AirPort card.
If both of those are OK, then one (or more) of these is true:
    The card isn't installed correctly.
The AirPort Extreme card is defective.
    The iBook's motherboard is defective.

  • Blank screen on my eMac after installing Airport Extreme Card

I just bought and installed (the right way, I checked) the Airport Extreme card on my eMac G4 desktop and at first the computer couldn't find it at all and after restarting several times, now the computer turns on but the screen is absolutely blank. I took the card out and restarted and it came on just fine. Can the card be affecting the screen? ANy help appreciated, I have no idea on this one.

This symptom is commonly seen when the Airport card is not FULLY seated into its socket. It can take a fair bit of force to do this.

  • Cannot turn on my iBook after installing airport extreme card

I have an older iBook that's running OSX 10.4.3 I am trying to install an airport extreme card, but I am unable to turn the computer on after installing it. What's the deal?

you have an ibook G3?? if so, then you need the old "Airport Card", which apple no longer makes and you'll have to get from macmall or macwireless.com

  • Trouble installing Airport extreme card

I'm trying to install an Airport extreme card in my Powerbook 12". The trouble is that it won't go in far enough. When I insert it, there is about 5mm sticking out. I can just about put the little wire connector into the hole on the card but am unable to close the little hinged door. Any ideas?

Just off the top of my head, be sure it is the right one for the PowerBook and then see if you can see what is preventing it from going all the way in. Sometimes there is a "key" that has to go into a slot. If you try to insert the card upside down or something like that, it may not be possible to push it in all the way. And it does sound like the problem is that it won't push in all the way. If it is not keyed correctly for the slot, it may not be the right card for that particular PowerBook. When fully inserted, you should not be able to see any traces. I believe that there is more than one version of the airport card, and you might have been supplied with the wrong one.
    Good luck!

  • Installing Airport Extreme card prevents my computer from turning on again

I have a 867MHz 12" Powerbook and I tried to install an airport extreme card that I bought on eBay. After it was installed, my computer would not even turn on. I thought it might be just my computer, but then I tried it in my Powermac G5 and it did the same thing. Perhaps I got ripped off? Any help?

Yeah, I made sure that I did that. It is odd that the machine won't even turn on with the card installed. I don't see how it could affect the power.

  • PowerMac G4 (FW 800) Won't Start After Installing Airport Extreme Card!

After installing an Airport Extreme Card in my G4 FW 800, the computer will not Chime or Start Up; shortly thereafter, the Fan begins to Run erratically.
Without the Airport Card installed, the CPU runs normal, with the exception of the clock needing to be reset.
Any help is Greatly Appreciated! -Nico

Hey Tom, thanks for the response. I have tried holding Command-Option-R-P down (resetting the PRAM) at startup with no avail. I have also pressed the PMU button with and without the Airport Card installed. Still no luck. I am pretty stumped. I ran a hardware check on the machine, and it has come back successful without the card.
The previous owner installed an extra internal HD and some memory. I have since installed a new PCI graphics card. Do you think these have anything to do with it?

  • 20" iMac g4 won't boot after installing airport extreme card

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=26237
This document shows a card that looks different from my card. The antenna is in the center in the picture and my card has the antenna to the side. The card seem a little smaller than the slot but it does go in and seats ok.
Do I need an old style card? I can't find anything but the Airport Extreme card in the apple store.
    Thanks,
    Larry

    Hi!
...yes, the 20" iMac G4 takes the original Apple Airport card (not extreme)

I have installed an airport extreme card into my powermac G5 dual 2 GHz. It will only detect my router if it's in the same room and even then it has a very weak signal. Any suggestions?
