Installing airport extreme into my Mac Pro

Hey everyone! I just bought a Refurbished AirPort Extreme Card
Part Number: F8881LL/A from the apple store. Ive been searching around and there are no support documents on how to install in in my machine. Does anyone have any instruction on how to do this? Also, now that I think about it, im not even sure this card will work with my computer? Will it? Thanks in advance!!

Okay but what if....
I bought a new Mac Pro Quad on Friday night at an actual Apple store. They only carried stock base models, so I loaded up on extras like a 750 GB drive, 6GB more memory, and also AP Extreme & BT. They sold it to me, didn't bat an eye about it being a dealer only installed item. But much like some of the other users I've seen posted, cannot seem to find instructions on HOW to install it.
But I'd have to presume that a store full of Apple experts, all fawning over my new Quad and 30" monitor...that at least one of them would have stopped me from buying it.

  • Airport Extreme Replacement Card - Mac Pro G5

I have an early Mac Pro G5 dual and just added the Apple M8881 Airport Extreme replacement card. Did not receive any software (driver?) with it. I am running Mac OSX 10.4. The only download I see for this card is for 10.3. The computer sees the card but the card sees no signals. Antenna, including the "T" antenna on rear of tower seems to be all ok. Any suggestions?

    Duane,
That's what I thought, thanks. If I put the computer right next to the base station, I get a very weak signal. When I unplug the "T" antenna, the signal does not drop. When I unplug the cable to the "T" antenna, the signal does not drop. When that close to the base station, some signal must be getting directly into the card. The problem must obviously be with the antenna jack and I will be returning the card for a replacement.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Apple Store - Selling Airport Extreme Cards for Mac Pro

I would venture to say that most people are not aware that the "standard" Airport Extreme Cards will not work for the Mac Pro, so I felt it important to let it be known.
This past weekend, I purchased a Mac Pro at an Apple Store in Texas. I picked up an Airport Express Card and asked the associate if it was compatible with the new Mac Pro's. He first thought it was already on the base config, which I knew had to be false. He went and looked it up, and sure enough it wasn't included but he did confirm that that Airport Express Card will in fact work with the Mac Pro.
After driving home nearly 2 hours, I pop the case to find out that the Airport slot is by no means the same; it's much smaller.
I see two problems with this:
    1. They should clearly mark on the box that the Airport Express Card is not compatible with the new Mac Pro (it's on the website description).
    2. The Apple Store Staff should be well aware of this change. Especially, since at the time I purchased the Mac Pro, the NEW Airport cards were not even shipping yet.
Just sharing my frustrations and also informing anybody about to head into a store to make a purchase... heads up.
    Thanks for listening,
    Marc

As you've found out they are NOT the same. In actual fact, as Apple classes them as a service centre only installation you won't be able to buy one from an Apple Store without an installation. They won't sell you a standalone part. Other place will however sell them.
The part number you are after, I believe, is MA688ZM/A.

  • Airport Extreme on my Mac Pro isnt finding any networks at all

hello, i just installed and Airport Extreme card in my Mac Pro yesterday configured it and it isnt finding any kind of wireless networks to connect to, and the router for my network is only 20 feet away from my Mac Pro, any ideas of why this could be?

  • Airport Extreme card for Mac Pro has SHORT range???

Hello- I have a Mac Pro with the Wireless AirPort Extreme card and ive noticed that the router (AirPort base station) has to be literally 2 ft from the tower to get a full signal. I did a speed test wirelessly from the other room and got 1.2Mb/s to .5Mb/s vs 18.3Mb/s when I plug the Mac Pro directly to the router. Here is what i found:
Plugged directly to Base Station: ~18Mb/s
AirPort 2 ft away wireless: ~9.5Mb/s
AirPort 6 ft away wireless: ~1.3Mb/s
AirPort in next room wireless: ~.43Mb/s
I've checked the antenna connections and they seem to be fine. There is nothing to break the signal between the computer and the Base Station. (minus the other room test) Any insights or suggestions to resolve the weak signal would be super! Thanks.

Our signal strength appears to be solid, but the connection is really inconsistent and it drops off the network all the time. Wish I hadn't bought the built-in airport and plugged into an extreme instead. Wasted 70 bucks!
It is in the basement, but laptops right next to it work just fine. I'm hoping there are driver updates or something that can fix this.

  • Airport Extreme Card for Mac Pro (bought in 2006)

In or around 2006 I bought a Mac Pro (it was right when the starting coming with Intel Chips) and didn't upgrade to have it come with a Airport Extreme Card inside. A week later I ordered one, but it wasn't the right one. I have been looking online and found one, the MA688Z/B on amazon.com. I have looked at websites showing how to install this, however, I don't see the place on the motherboard where it goes. Is this the right internal Airport Extreme card for my Mac Pro from 2006 or is there a different one? Also, is the Airport Express that is external better and should I just go that route?
    Please help! Thanks!

Here's a picture of the 802.11n module installed in a Mac Pro.
It's small and fits near drive bay 2. It's not designed to be fitted by customers, so you cannot buy the card on the Apple Website. Fitting involves plugging in the card. A small brass screw - and two antenna cables, which clip onto the corners.
Unless you have tiny fingers, I'd pay to have it fitted in an Apple Store.
Warning. The Mac Pro is heavy. Do not attempt to carry it to the mall if you have a heart condition or are pregnant.

  • Airport Extreme Card in Mac Pro

I was just about to take the plunge and order a Mac Pro Refurb this morning, but I have to have the Airport Extreme Card installed. I called the Apple Store business line and asked if I could pay to have that added and they said "No, the refurbs are already boxed and ready to ship". He said that the Airport Cards had to be soldered in and that I should take it to an Apple Service Center (closest one is 300 miles from where I live) and that it would take 2-days to install!
Therefore, the Airport Card seems to be the deal-breaker - 50-bucks killing a $6,000 purchase (with accessories)!
I know these Airport Cards do not require soldering, but I also know they have gone to great lengths to make it as hard as possible to install these after purchase in their infinate wisdom.
All my research on installing the card myself post-purchase looks pretty sketchy and voids the warranty - so I guess refurbs are out and I will have to pay $600+ to get a BTO - I think I will pass.

i just bought my mac pro a week ago.
i asked what my options were for installing an airport card and they said they could do it at the apple store.
i asked if i could do it personally and they said that i could, that it wouldn't void the warranty, but that they would do it for free, and it would be a difficult operation to try on my own.
i know for a fact that there are some screenshots somewhere on the internets that shows this procedure. it is possible to do it yourself, but the screws are very tiny.
    good luck.

  • Airport Extreme connect to Mac Pro HD

I just set up a new Airport Extreme & its working perfectly allowing me to connect to my IP from both my Macbook Pro (also brand new & running 10.6) & my Mac Pro (running 10.5.8). I want to also access the Mac Pro itself so I can get files, etc. from it. I can't seem to figure out how to do that. Could anyone tell me how to do that, please.
    Harris

What I need now is some Detailed instructions on setting up the whole thing so that I can pull files off the Mac Pro & put them on the Macbook Pro & vice versa.
Check out the following articles to see if they will help:

  • Blue Screen Stuck... Installed airport card into Power Mac G4,

everything was working fine. I got online, was downloading software updates while surfing the net, then I get a small black screen that tells me I need to restart my computer in several languages.
Now the computer only gets to the blue screen, the grey spinning dial/thinking wheel goes for a bit then its just BLUE... What has happened?
Does this have anything to do with electrical charges?
Didi I cause this by inserting the Airport Card? I didn't touch any other part of the machine.
I did not unplug the monitor only the ac cord.
Please give me some good news...

    Hi-
You have had a kernel panic. These are caused by software, or, hardware problems.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
Your first suspect would be the Airport card. To be sure, you need to examine the library/logs in Console. If you can get a copy of the panic log that coincides with the kernel panic, it will offer some clues as to the problem.
You could just remove the Airport card, and see if the system returns to normal. But, there may be other causes.
Try a safe boot. Restart, and immediately after the tone, hold down the shift key:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
If you are able to boot, check the logs in Console.
If not, try a single user boot, and run fsck. Restart, and immediately hold down "Cmd + s" keys.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
Whe the command line appears, type /sbin/fsck -fy and press return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Repeat until the "volume is OK" report is returned.
For now, see what the results of the above are, and please post back.

The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) is an Internet router that supports both wired and wireless network clients. You can connect both of your desktop, using either media, to the AEBS for network connectivity.

  • Installing Airport Extreme Card in new Mac Pro 2008?

Hello, I bought the upgrade kit for the airport wireless n up at the apple store and I am trying to install it in my new Mac Pro 2.8 octo.
I found where to install it and I did install it but Im not getting any connect at all, though it says airport is on. I installed the software on from the CD it came with also. I am using a D-Link Xtreme Router model 655.
I read on another forum post that you might have to install a wire for the antenna on top of the card. I didn't see any wire when I installed so maybe that applied to the older mac pros..
    any help would be appreciated.
These cards are compatible with my router right? I know my macbook pro n wireless connects fine.
    Thanks!

    hi kevin.
I also bought air mac card at apple store of japan.
And I installed that card at my new macpro by myself.
Apple store's genius people said to me, its installment takes 30min,so
I tried intalled airmac card and working normally in now.
But this is not customer install part.I think. They did not gave any install
    manual for this part.
So I installed this part at mac but it was not working at that time.
After googling,I found some miss at my work. That is not connecting cables at network card.
You have to connect cable at your network card for using.
Also you can find your conneting cable at your new mac.
Please find connecting cable and connect to your network card.

    Hi,
how much diskspace did you assign to the Windows partition ?
And did you do the reformating of the WIndows partition as described on pages 8-10 of the BootCamp Installation Guide ?
In your first post you mentioned 'fully install' twice. Any chance that the XP disc you use is an Upgrade disc and not a full retail/OEM one ?
Check with the label on the disc because such XP upgrade disc are not useable with BootCamp.

  • AirPort Utility on a Mac Pro can't administer AirPort Extreme

    Hi,
I have had an AirPort Extreme from Day 1 and have been happy with it with one problem:
When I run the AirPort Utility on my Mac Pro I can see the base station but when I click on it to see the details and administer it it just sits there "forever" and doesn't open it up. My Mac Pro is connected to the AirPort Extreme via Ethernet, it doesn't have a wireless card in it.
The utility works fine on my MacBook Pro C2D (Wireless) and Mac Mini (wired).
Anyone seen this issue and maybe have a solution?
    Thanks,
    Steve

If you have a PC, AirPort Utillity would probably be under Start > Programs > AirPort Utility.
If you don't have AirPort Utility, you can download a current (and recommended) version from here:

  • How do I know what kind of drive is ok to install into my Mac Pro 1.1?

    Can I install a "Samsung Desktop Class Spinpoint F3 1 TB SATA 3.0 Gb-s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare-OEM Drives, HD103SJ"
drive into my Mac Pro 1.1? (2x3 3 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor.)
All the reviews for this drive were by people with PC's not Mac's. Also, my Mac Pro is a Tower so does it mean this "desktop class" won't work? Samsung has another one for $10 more that doesn't say "desktop" : the "1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 SATA2 3.5" Hard Drive (32MB cache, 7200rpm)." Should I get that one instead?

Thanks, guys. I ordered and installed the drive I asked about, and it's working fine. The next drive will be the WD black, as you suggested. (It was too late for me to change my order when I read your recs.)
Having installed this I TB drive, I now want it to be my main one, with my system and all of my files moved to there. My current main drive, the one that came with the computer, is only 250MB and is almost full. My new question is: what's the best way to move everything? How do I get the new drive to have a working system folder and be the start up disk. I remember last time I tried to copy everything from one drive to another, the copied system wouldn't work on the new drive.
