Installing an OS 10.2 or 10.3 on a 2004 PowerBook

I need to test out some software for OS 10.2 and 10.3, so I want to install them on spare partitions on my PowerBook G4 - 15" 1.5 GB CPU, Fall 2004. It came with 10.3.4, and I have since upgraded to 10.4.5, but have a partition where the original DVDs reinstalled 10.3.4 OK. (On my Dual 2.0 PowerMac G5, it's not possible to install anything earlier than the 10.2.7 (G5) that came on itoriginally. I suppose I could install 10.3.0 there, but I already have a functionaing 10.3.9 and 10.2.8 there and want to leave them in place.) It is seemingly impossible to install or boot from any OS disks earlier than what came with my PB - OS 10.3.4. AppleCare says it ispossible, but won't tell me how ("we don't support it").
I have tried every way I can think of, using two different sets of 10.2 CDs and a set of 10.3 CDs. It works fine with my original 10.3.4 "Software Restore" DVDs, but simply will not boot from the 10.2 and 10.3 CDs:
1) Click "Install OS X" on the CD, then Restart. It tries to boot, flashes the question mark for a few seconds, then restarts back into 10.4.5 on my usual partition.
2) Insert CD, restart holding down "c" key. It tries to boot, flashes the question mark for a few seconds, then restarts back into 10.4.5 on my usual partition.
3) Go to System Preferences/Startup Disk. It always sees the CD as a startup disk. Choose it, restart. It tries to boot, flashes the question mark for a few seconds, then restarts back into 10.4.5 on my usual partition.
4) Shut down PB. Start up holding down Option key, which should give options to boot on all disks. This is the interesting one: it doesn't even see the OS 10.2 CD as a startup disk when it's there. It does see the OS 10.3 CD when it's there: select it, start up. The grey screen with an apple appear, but changes after 5 seconds to a "Do Not Enter" sign. Have to force-shut down, restart back in 10.4.5.
The one I most want to do is boot from and install OS 10.2. Does anyone know any way to make the PB boot from a Jaguar Install CD? There's no documntation anywhere that says I can't, but it just won't do so.

FireWire, right. Of course if I had a computer that could boot from OS 10.2 I wouldn't need to install it on my PB.
Well, I guess that explains what AppleCare meant by "not supported" - the Level 1 person I was speaking to had absolutely no idea what the Level 2person had meant, and didn't think to ask. Looks like I won't be able to do it then. I'm glad I have my 2003 G5 to test OS 10.2.8 on at least. It makes me regret that I traded in my old blue & white G3 when I bought the G5 (and a 2001 iBook when I bought the PowerBook - although I did quite well on the iBook, so the b&w G3 would have been enough.) I guess this confirms that when I get around to buying a MacIntel, I should keep one of the PPC's, probably the G5, since it goes back to 10.2.7 while the PB only to 10.3.4 minimum.

  • What version of office for mac is mininally needed to be installed on 10.9? I just tried my own 2004, which as too old, am hoping 2008 or 2011 since I don't want to buy a new one...

    Hi,
I work on a second hand macbook pro running on 10.9 and now want office for mac on it, additionally to the sofware I already have.
On my old macbook I had office 2004 and since I still have two product codes unused was hoping these can still be used, but I tried to install it and it's just not supported anymore.
Since I don't have a lot of budget right now I hope 2008 may be possible to be installed since I can get one for only a little money (want no illegal copies), but it's a shame to get it if it turns out not to work.......I read somewhere 2008 is not supported anymore but I don't know if that necessarily means it cannot be installed.....
or do I need 2011 at least?
Or would 10.9 actually only allow the latest 2013 version to be installed?
I'd like to know before buying anything......
Right now it actually has an office 2011 version installed by the previous user but unfortunately that one was not activated and I have no way to retrieve the product code.
as i said, i like it to be legal, that's why I prefer buying the original software and the older versions can be found cheaper......
I hope someone can give me some advice!
    thanks,

Office 2011 is the current boxed version for the Mac. The two versions are Home and Business. The difference (besides price) is that the Business version includes Outlook. Both contain Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
Actually, the Home version also has Outlook hidden on the disk. If you decided later you want to use Outlook, you can call Microsoft for an unlock code to install it from the Home version disk. The unlock cost is essentially the difference between the Home and Business versions.
You mentioned Office 2013, but that's the current Windows version. MS hasn't really stated one way or another if there will be a feature comparable boxed Mac version. If there is, it looks like we won't see it until sometime in 2014. To get the current functionality of Office 2013 in a Mac product, you'd have to purchase the subscription based Office 365.
It does depend on your needs. Often, Office must be used for true compatibility with people you work, or collaborate with. It also has many features the free alternatives don't offer, and can't import or replicate. Otherwise, as Gary noted, Open Office is a good free choice.

  • Unable to Install OS 10.2 (Jaguar) or OS 10.3 (Panther) on PowerBook G4

I was having issues with my PowerBook G4 Titanium (667 MHz) running OS 10.3 (Panther), see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5846471#5846471, so I zeroed and erased the harddrive before installing the original operating system, OS 10.1 (Puma). Using the Software Update feature, I updated to OS 10.1.5, verified/repaired permissions and the harddrive, and then updated firmware before proceeding to install OS 10.2 (Jaguar) using a full retail upgrade disk. The installation produced a kernel panic in the final stages, so I repeated the process from the beginning (zeroed and erased the harddrive, etc.). The second go-around, the installation hung up in the final stages (with 8 minutes to go, which went on for a good hour), until I received an Unexpected Error. (Exit Code 0). I restarted the computer while holding down the Option key to select the original OS 10.1 startup disk, and now my laptop starts up with the smiling mac icon and a crude black-and-white spinning sun. I used the Disk Utility feature to verify/repair permissions and the harddrive, but ejecting the Installation CD and attempting to start up still displays the smiling mac and crude sun.
I suspect the harddrive itself may be defective (at least that's what started this whole chain of events), but the Disk Utility verifies the harddrive. If it's not the harddrive (how else can I tell?), is there something else that may be impeding installation of OS 10.2?
My OS 10.3 is an upgrade CD, not a full retail installation DVD, so I am reluctant to try and jump from the original OS (10.1) to 10.3 without first installing 10.2. Or, is that possible?
Would I be able to install OS 10.2 using the full retail CD, or do I have to install the original, base OS (10.1) first?
I appreciate any advice the forum is willing to offer.

I have 1024 MB of RAM in the form of two (2) 512 MB chips which I installed shortly after purchasing my PowerBook G4 new some years ago (2002?).
In the event you can decipher the following, which I suspect you can, I am attaching both the finder.crash.log and pbs.crash.log, which I opened from the Console, as well as the Kernel Panic Log, which I opened in Apple System Profiler.

Interestingly enough, I hadn't suspected the RAM. I always thought it was the hard drive going out on me (which it may still be).
I ran an Extended Test using my Apple Hardware Test CD and it revealed the following error code: mem_2/4
I verified that the RAM shows up in my System Profile in Apple System Profiler. Is it possible one or both of the RAM chips is going bad? Is it possible that the built-in RAM is going bad?
Do you recommend I remove one or both of the RAM chips and then run the hardware test again? Are there memory tests other than the Apple Hardware Test CD that may be able to better pinpoint the problem?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • How can I install a full learning scenario in XI 3.0 -NW 2004S ?

    HI, GUYS.

    Hi,
Import the SAP BASIS 700 software component into the repository. You can find this in the Installation DVD.
How to do this, go to installation guide --page no 46

  • How many computers can I install Final Cut Studio 2 on?

Here's my dilemma. I'm a poor soon-to-be college grad with an old 2004 PowerBook G4. I'm starting to do video projects this summer and want to get a new computer and Final Cut Studio 2. The problem is, I don't have money for both. However, my current computer DOES meet the requirements (1GB RAM, 1.5Ghz engine, and 17" monitor) to install the apps and run them. So, ideally, I would buy Final Cut Studio 2 and install it on this old computer until I saved up enough money to get myself a Mac Book Pro in a few months. Then, I would install FCS 2 on my new computer. Is this possible? Can I install FCS 2 on my old G4 and then months later when I get a new computer, on my new computer? Or at least transfer the apps to my new computer?
Thanks ahead of time! I haven't gone computer shopping in a while so I don't remember how this all works!
    Message was edited by: Seef

Install it on the PowerBook, and when you get the MacBook Pro, download and use this tool on the PowerBook prior to installing it on the MacBook Pro. The license for Final Cut Studio 2 permits it to be installed on a desktop and portable but not two portables.
If you're in the middle of a project when you get the MacBook Pro, complete it before changing the configuration.

  • Can I install 10.4.11 or above on my G4 Titanium 400 mhz with 512 megs ram?

    Hello,
My wife and I are trying to determine if we can both find to purchase, and install 10.4.11 or above on our Titanium laptop. She has recently bought the Adobe Creative Suite CS 3 and it requires 10.4.11 or above. I'm pretty sure we can add more ram at a reasonable cost but are trying to determine if we can even install 10.4.11 on a machine with a processor that is this slow.
I'm not too concerned about it running CS applications (photoshop, illustrator,in design) at top performance. It's really more of a secondary computer for us at this point. As long as the programs would function we would be fine. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
    Cheers,
    Vance

Hi, Vance. I believe you can still order Tiger directly from Apple, by telephone only, by calling 1-800-692-7753.
You can certainly install Tiger and update it to 10.4.11 on your Powerbook, and you can maximize its RAM to meet CS3's minimum requirement of 1GB. But you'll be running it on the second-slowest of all G4 processors, with marginally adequate RAM, and with a really antiquated and underpowered video accelerator that (like all notebook computer video cards that I know of) can't be upgraded. So CS3 not only won't be running at top performance; it will be running at rock bottom performance. You may be able to live with that, but doing so will certainly be harder if you also run CS3 on another, substantially faster machine whose performance will contrast sharply with the Powerbook's.
Years ago, I upgraded my 225MHz PowerPC 604e desktop Mac to a 500MHz G3 processor and a bigger, faster hard drive. I was also using a 166MHz Powerbook 1400 with a PowerPC 603e processor at that time, and it was a third or half as fast as the desktop Mac for most ordinary purposes until I upgraded the desktop. After the upgrade, the desktop was at least eight times faster than the Powerbook in real-life processor- and disk-intensive uses. Using the Powerbook (which had been tolerable enough before) suddenly became unbearable, with the result that I soon replaced it.

  • Error after installing the new JSF release

I've got a problem to install the new JSF release. I downloaded the Web Services Developer Pack 1.3 from the homepage and installed it. Then, i downloaded the actual release of the JSF 1.0 as a zip file. I removed the existing jsf directory in the original WSDP and extracted the zip file into the home directory of the WSDP. Then I renamed the directory from jsf-1.0 to jsf and started the tomcat again.
But then I get the following errors and tomcat isn't working at all:

Your server may be in an unstable state if you did not remove all of the old cached files.
I recommend you clear out your <JWSDP_HOME>/work directory and remove all the <JWSDP_HOME>/conf/Catalina/localhost/jsf* files and restart your server.

  • OS 10.4 Install DVDs for iMac G5 won't load OS 10.4 on PB G4, Help!

Having recently bought a used PowerBook G4 1.5Ghz 12", it came without Install Disks. I want to reformat the Drive in the PowerBook before I use it. I tried to use the Install disks for my iMac G5 & the iMac G5 Install disk wouldn't let me Install or Reformat the PowerBook Drive. Are the Install Disks now Product specific? Is it possible to use install disks from a G4 iBook to install OS 10.4 on my G4 PowerBook?

The OEM installer discs that come with specific Mac models generally cannot be used to install OS X on other models. In particular you cannot use the G5 installer on a G4 or vice versa.

  • Cannot boot from OSX install disk

I need to run disk utility to repair my boot drive.
I am attempting to startup from my OSX install disk. However, I can't seem to get my machine to do this.
My computer recognizes my install disk when it's in my superdrive. It mounts on the desktop and I can read from it.
However, when i go into system preferences>startup disk, OSX does not show my mounted OSX install disk listed as an option. Also, when I hold down C on startup, my machine ignores the command. And when I hold down the Option key on startup, the only startup option shown is my boot drive, not my OSX install disk.
I've tried zapping my p-ram. I've tried booting up in safe mode and then re-trying the above.
I don't know what else I can do, short of typing in scary UNIX command lines.
I'm going completely mental here. Please help me, somebody.
If it makes any difference, I've got gobs of apps installed, notably Adobe CS3, Final Cut Studio, Firefox, MS Office 2004.

Not that this solves the booting problem, but I recommend installing AppleJack, which is free (and does run on Intel). This provides easy commands for doing a disk check in single user mode (it's the same in the end as typing the Unix commands but much easier to use), and it's much faster than booting from the CD (even if you can).
Having installed it, restart holding command-S: after a lot of text you will get the line 'Type Applejack at the prompt' - you simply do this and then it's just a question of typing 'd' to check the disk and so on. (Incidentally do not run it from the Terminal when booted normally: you must use it only in single-user mode.)

  • How do I install Tiger on a G3 iMac via Firewire?

I want to install Tiger on to my slot loading (CD drive) iMac, via my DVD drive-equipped Powerbook and Firewire.
But how do I put both computers in Firewire 'target mode' to do this?

Turn them both off, connect a 6-pin FireWire cable between them.
Start up the PowerBook (with the mains adapter plugged in) and allow it to complete.
Insert the installer DVD and restart from the "Install OS X" alias on the DVD, allow to complete restart again.
Start the iMac with the T key held down and you should get moving FW symbols on it's screen and it's hard drive will mount on the PowerBook.
Select the iMac's hard drive from the installer and complete install. The system will then reboot to the new install on the iMac.
Shut down the iMac and the PowerBook, disconnect the cable and reboot both. You may want to hold down the option key on the PowerBook and select it's internal drive as the startup disk. You can do this in system prefs after booting anyway - I've seen this setting get confused on some target installs.
    Good luck!

  • Installing RAM, Mid-2012 Macbook Pro?

Can a user or owner install RAM, Mid-2012 Macbook Pro?
Is it a straightforward process? I've installed RAM into DT macs..and into a "Pismo" era powerbook.
    thank you

"is a Spudger absolutely necessary to remove that plug,"
Battery plug? No you can just  use your fingernails. I actually use a #3 Master Airscrew nylon propellor from the hobby shop, cut in half and wrapped w/ self fusing electrical tape. I have about 6 of them and half are pretty worn out.
"are there any screws or other parts which might wish to fly out and away as a person opens the case and gets at this task?"
No it's just the way the bottom fits on to the MBP. You fit it in the back (near the vent) first, then pull it forward and into place.
The other thing is the screws are different lengths in the bottom so just keep track of where they belong. If you don't force anything you won't get into trouble because it's fairly obvious if you have the wrong screw in the wrong place. If you're doing a super pro job you would add a tiny dot of blue "Thread Loc" to the tip of the screw when you put it back.

  • Problem after installing RAM

I have recently installed an extra 512 megs of RAM to my 12" G4 powerbook. it originally came with 256 megs. However now when i open and close programs, bits of the picture from the programme i was using stays on the screen and i have to click and drag over them with the mouse to get rid of them. it happens when using programmes too and clicking certain buttons, the image the buttons give stays on the screen. I am mostly using the mac with pro-tools LE 6.4 and my operating system is osx 10.3.3
if anybody could shed any light on this it would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advance.
    séamus

Seamus, unfortunately, many users expieriance this by buying bargin basement or cheap Ram.
This is not to say the Ram you bought is cheap.
But Powerbook's are very picky about the Ram they will accept without problems.
Most MAC users recommend buying Lifetime Warranty.
There are several different companys that offer and sell this more reliable RAM.
There are several located in most Mac Magazines.
    Mac Solutions.com is one.
    DMS Certified Memory..800-662-7466
    Other World Computing..800-275-4576 visitmacsales.com
The 3 listed above offer Lifetime Warranty.

The weird part is I cant figure out why this error occurs no Java apps are running on the machine. Nothing is running on the machine. Also a simple re-install immediately produces a successful result with no errors on the same machine.
Even the Newsgroup suggests that a re-install is the corrective action.
Im trying to deploy JRE1.4.2_04 to thousands of desktops using Altiris or SMS.
25% failure rate is just not acceptable. HELP!

After I installed the latest security update (2005-08) I noticed that my powerbook takes much longer now to go to sleep.
