Installing an SSD drive in a MacPro

Hello,
I just got me a 256Gig SSD drive to add to my Mid 2010 MacPro. The manufacturer (Samsung) gives no info whatsoever on how to go about installing the MacPro, what the needed tools/items would be or any other easy to find info on using/maintaining such a drive in a Mac. I know the 2 companies are not best buddies but as a consumer I feel kind of thwarted…
So any hints are warmly appreciated here!

In more than a "few" cases, lack of enabling TRIM resulted in the device performing ever slower and sluggish. I guess in such cases some type of restore would be called for, or a weekly run under Mavericks system - though I never like to run DU from prior OS especially on new OS with as many changes as Yosemite has. CCC had to be updated to be compatible.
Using TRIM on non-Apple SSDs
http://www.softraid.com/pages/support/compatibility_notes.html
When running Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, the SoftRAID application no longer modifies the Apple driver to enable TRIM on non-Apple SSDs.
Modifying a driver in Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite can make your Mac no longer startup.
If you are willing to take the risk of having your Mac no longer startup, you can download and install TRIM Enabler and your SoftRAID volumes will use TRIM on Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
Make sure you read the warnings about using TRIM on Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite before installing and running TRIM Enabler.

  • How do I install a SSD drive - the Bios does not allow changing to AHCI mode

I have a Windows 7, HP ENVY approx 1.5 years old.  I want to install an SSD drive, however the BIOS seems to be locked, or does not include options to change the SATA connection to AHCI or RAID.
How does one unlock the BIOS, or change the sata settings to allow an SSD drive to be installed?

    Hi:
AHCI is enabled by default on today's HP consumer notebooks.
Nothing can be done to actually see a setting, or change the setting to anything other than AHCI etc.

  • Will they install an SSD drive for me?

    Hello,
I'm thinking of buying a 2.5" SSD drive for my Intel-based iMac - will the Apple Store install it and move my existing HD to the slave bus for me? I've still got AppleCare left.
If so, how much would they charge me for?
Also, is there an eSATA solution for iMacs?
    Thanks
    Georgios

The simple answer is no they will not because it's not something they sell. Also I don't believe a 2.5" SSD will fit, the bay is designed for 3.5" hd's. Regarding eSATA drives, again your iMac does not have an SATA port on the back so it will not support an eSATA drive, however if you have an iMac with a FW 800 port that would fine, while not as quick as SATA it's a good solution.
If you still want to go down the SSD path then you can look to see if there are any repair centers in your area that will do the work. That being said if your machine is covered by warranty I'm pretty sure installing a SSD drive would void it.

  • Installing three SSD drives on Mac Pro

    Hello,
I followed the advice given here and bought 3 Samsung 840 SSD drives for my Mac Pro. Two of them are 120GB and one is 250GB.
I also purchased a Tempo SSD Pro 6GB/s SATA PCIe Drive. Only one of them (that holds two SSDs.)
    I plan on using:
         • one SSD for the OS and APPS
         • one SSD for a PS scratch disc
         • one SSD for the photoshop, premiere pro, and after effects files I'm currently working on.
I figured I'd keep the 1TB HDD currently used in the computer to store all my other files.
I also have a 1TB seagate extrenal HDD that I would like to set up as a back up or time machine.
    Does this sound good?
If so, which SSD do I install in my regular sliding drawer bay? I have 2.5" - 3.5" adapter.
Which two do I install on the PCIe card?
Which on do I use for what?
As you can see I'm clueless. Lol
Here are my specs before adding the SSDs.
    Mac Pro
    Mid 2012
Processor  3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  48 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)
Storage  1TB Sata disc (423.26GB free),
1TB External USB Disk freeAgent GoFlex Drive (988.58 free)
P.S. I'm unsure about being able to install my current O.S. on the new SSD. When I bought the Mac Pro it had an older version of OS on it with a free download of the new OS. So the disc will only have the older version. Will I have to pay for the newer one or can I somehow copy it from the current HDD drive it's installed on?
Thank you so much. You have already been a HUGE help in the past posts and look forward to your wisdom.  8 )

Clone the system to the SSD you plan to use for system.
How much disk space is your system using now? w/o incl. anything in /Users, so just system.
If your system uses 60GB you want to use the 240GB SSD.
I think 120GB is on small side for scratch alone.
move projects to scratch array when you want to work on them:  "Work disk + scratch" is fast. Then move them off the array, erase the array, and start a new project.
I would try the 2 x 120 SSDs on PCIe 6G as scratch and see how it feels and works.Try and test.  No harm. I think that is what most people do, they experiement and try out different setups to find the one that works best for them.
Important: Have a clone of the system and be ready to restore or move it around as needed.
    Install TRIM Enabler of course.
    SSD Maintenance
Samsung recommends setting aside 10% for over-provisioning.
Their Windows utility, shame there isn't a Mac version.
#2: Try system on 120GB in drive bay with an adapter
With that then use the other two on the Tempo.
Those could be one large 360GB volume JBOD.
You will have to see how much your scratch space gets used.
    I would have argued for 3 x 240GB SSDs. More flexible. Better SSD design - slightly. Adds $140 to the price, even if you had to wait to get 3rd one;
#3  get 2 x 240GB for scratch and projects and 1 x 120GB for system (if your system is less than 50GB)
I doubt you will find the difference of the system on the Sonnet Tempo a deciding factor.
The Sonnet Tempo Pro is for higher I/O RAID, both Tempo cards support 2 x SSDs (I have the cheaper one)

PS: You have Mountain Lion. Buy Carbon Copy Cloner and it will clone the system and create the recovery volume also so you should not need to redownload 10.8.x - and you do not need the DVD with 10.6.4 again.

  • How do I install an ssd drive in a iMac?

I have 2 iMacs.  One is 21" 2007 the other is 27" 2009.  Can either accept a 120GB SSD drive?  How do I intstall it and make it my primary drive?

Yes, but it means some disassembly so you should search Google for articles on it.
For all Macs you set the startup drive using the Startup Disk preferences. Obviously, you must have installed OS X on a device to make it bootable.

  • (Mac Mini mid-2011) Installing an SSD drive as a replacement of the HDD

    Hey all,
I just got myself a Crucial M500 240GB SSD drive for my mid-2011 Mac Mini. I intend to replace the standard hard drive with this one.
Here are a couple of thigs that are still unclear to me :
    - what will happen when I first boot my Mini after I replaced the HDD with the SSD ? As of now, this drive is in stock state, I guess not even formatted and empty.
    - how will I be able to make a fresh install of Mavericks ? I made a bootable Mavericks install usb stick, but haven't found out a way yet to boot on it (I have a wireless Apple keyboard, and holding the cmd key when booting won't pop any disk manager)
Any further details on how I should proceed are appreciated, thanks !

    Hi,
First off, thanks for taking the time to answer.

You have to hold the Alt key while your computer is starting up in order to show all bootable partitions, so you will be able to choose the OS X Mavericks installer flash drive.
Then, format the SSD with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
In case you want to clone your HDD to the SSD, you can use the Restore feature in Disk Utility to do it. Get a USB to SATA adapter, connect the HDD and follow these steps with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html Choose your HDD as "Source" and the SSD as "Destination". When you have finished, restart and disconnect your HDD.
Just so you know, what I'm trying to do is a fresh install of Mavericks, from scratch. I do not want to clone the install I'm running know on my standard HD.
I tried to use several keyboard combinason without any luck. I Googled that and found out that this is normal behaviour on a Mac with a wireless keyboard. How am I supposed to get into recovery mode then ?
    Thanks !

  • Installing an SSD drive in a Macbook Pro

Hello All.  Thanks all for detailed replies.
I may not have read all your posts properly but today I tried to clone the SSD with my current HD in disk utilities but it wouldn't let me.  Told me to use disk utility in recovery mode -I was able to "clone" the HD.  Then proceeded to shut down my mac, switched out the HDs, then pressed start.....got the folder icon with a ? mark.  Read some other discussions regarding that so I tried the different key combos before booting up.  None worked (mac auto shuts off instead of rebooting second time after command prompts i.e. CMD +R; Shift Key; Option, NVRAM reset....).
    ***A little background issue***
Luckily I had an external HD where I created a Mac OS boot drive (when I first created the external HD boot drive) I must have done something wrong cause I have no recovery disk icon in System pref -> Startup Disk (Only have the main HD drive icon).  Not to mention that doing so wiped my HD so I had to manual recover from TC.
After booting from the external HD boot drive (with the SSD installed) I made progress but was stopped at the grey screen w/ stop sign.  I back-tracked and re-installed my original Mac HD back into the MBP and have not done anything further in fear of messing it up again.
From all your comments plus my hands-on-approach, I now understand that TRIM is still enabled and needs to be off prior to hardware mods.  If I am understanding this correctly, the reason I was unable to boot whatsoever with the SSD installed is because there is no OS installed on the SSD.  Am I safe to make this assumption?
And, if so, what way should i install the OS onto the SSD?  A follow-on question is, once my SSD has an OS installed on it, I should enable TRIM, reboot MBP, then shut-down again before I install the SSD, correct?
Hopefully I made sense in a orderly fashion so someone more intelligent than me in this field can yay or nay my process.  Thanks all!

...I looked at the System Info and it says TRIM is disabled.  Is that supposed to happen?  I thought one had to physically disable TRIM...
If TRIM was actually activated on your source drive, I'd expect it to be carried over but it's a good thing it didn't. TRIM is excellent to have active when using an SSD, but in Yosemite, it's blocked by design because the kext which has to be modified to make it work on third party SSD's fails the new kext-signing test that's a Yosemite security feature. You can turn it back on by disabling that security feature entirely but when you do any OS update, there's a real risk that the partition will simply refuse to boot. Read this for a detailed explanation of the risks.
You can look through this link for an explanation of what TRIM is and why it's good to have it running. It's possible to activate TRIM and, when doing any kind of OS update, turn it off and back on when it's done, but circumstances may arise where you forget or it just isn't possible and you may get burned. I did once, before the conflict was generally recognized, and it was a real pain to start over.

  • Question about installing a SSD drive and how to clone

    Greetings,
I have a 2007 white macbook w/ 80GB HD. I have been thinking about installing a 60 GB SSD drive from OWC as the price has come down tremendously and honestly just to see how it improves boot time, launch, applications etc. I don't keep much stuff on this macbook as it is purely a "browsing" computer but I was wondering how to best clone the hard drive to the new one?
From what I understand, I use an application like Carbon copy cloner and backup "all data". Then, I turn the macbook over and follow the instructions for installing the new drive. Then, I guess I boot up and format the new drive with Snow Leopard.
When do I actually tell the recently formatted computer to transfer the data from the backup clone? Do I do this during the opening migration screen? I know how to import data from another computer using Firewire and a cable, however, does the new SSD formatted computer understand how to boot from the carbon copy cloner backup without installing this software on the new drive?
    Cheers.

    Julie:
I am no expert on SSDs. Here is how I would do it with a regular HDD. Note: You will need an external 2.5" enclosure.
Clone Old HDD to new HDD using SuperDuper
    • Install new HDD in enclosure
    • Connect to the computer and boot from internal HDD.
    • Launch Disk Utility and format new HDD in enclosure (post for step by step directions, if needed)
    • Download and launch SuperDuper
    • In the Copy field select your internal HDD
    • To is your newly formatted HDD in enclosure
    • Using *backup all files*
    • Click Options button
    • Check *Repair Disk Permissions on Source*
    • During copy Erase Destination HDD then copy from Source
    • On successful completion Quit SuperDuper
    • Shut down computer and with external still connected
    • Option boot from external HDD to check clone.
    • If everything checks out, remove new HDD from enclosure and install in computer.
    • Install old HDD in enclosure (if desired)

  • 2009 Mac Book Pro want to install an SSD drive to replace optical 250 drive. What is best way?

My Mac Book Pro is getting very slow (2009) I want to replace 250 optical drive foe a 256 SSD Samsung850 pro drive. What is the best way to proceed. I am running Yosemite  now. Have the SSD drive formatted and a back up made of my old drive. Do I have to go back to Snow leopard and reload? Then update to present?
    Thanks

That error can be as a result of a number of reasons, corrupt file system, incompatible software, malware. etc.
I suggest that you connect the SDD via USB, boot into the recovery partition and install Yosemite onto the SSD.  (Make certain that it has been formatted.)
Then test to see if it will boot the MBP (OPTION key down at start up and then select the SSD icon.)
If it boots the MBP, swap the drives and then connect the original or your back up HDD to the MBP and then drag and drop your data to the internal SSD.
This way if the HHD was corrupt, that issue then should be eliminated.
Not as quick a procedure, but this seems to be the best alternative that I can come up with.
    Ciao.

  • I have tried many times to install a SSD drive by using optical drive tray, my MBP is early 2011, intel serise 6,  checked on webpage, and someone say SSD could be installed on HDD drive, I guess it could be solved by driver, anyone good idea?

Hi, MBP friends, any ideas for this problem? I tried hard and checked the hardware we have, and it hardly to say the problem from hardware, instead I am thinking it could be solved by driver update, or someone who is good on computer language that could help with the problem.
My computer is early 2011, with intel serise 6 and sata 3 acceptable. I dont know why the opitical drive can not support ssd drive instead.
need help, I really dont want to put my SSD driver to HDD driver, and move HDD driver to optical driver.

well, i have got information from website, and it says it will be harmful to hdd driver set in optical area coz there is no vibration protection function.
i have checked the system, and it says the sata speed is the same 6G and chip intel series 6. it should be the same speed, right?
I am thinking that the chip is the same and mortherboard is the same, the cable is similar as well, why it doesnt work? driver issue? OSX issue? or software issue? firmware?
or simply to say, if i am trying to setup two ssd driver into MBP, it has to be one in opitcal driver area. how could work?
    thanks... still in puzzle.
right now, i have reinstall the osx into ssd by usb external, and install it back with opitcal tray, however, when i turn on the computer, the system can not be logged in from SSD, and computer can not read SSD driver, and it says it must be formatted or push out.

The first SSD are not visible from the BIOS and the other one I can see it from the bios but when trying to do a clean install... booting from the DVD, after the files seems to be loaded, I came up with a blank screen... the hard drive led on the monitor stay's on (not flashing) and nothing else happen.
Do you know first if it's possible to change the 1TB HD to a sata SSD drive (not mSata) and if the answer is yes... how to do it ?

Can you try Changing these settings checklist in your BIOS Before you do a new installation.
Some of the settings may not be seen inside your BIOS but for those that's present change it like on this list
    Under Exit TAB
     OS Optimization
    OS Optimized
For the two options above:  Should be set as Disabled or Other OS
Under Boot Tab / Start up Tab
Boot Mode Should be set to Legacy
Boot Priority Should be set to Legacy First
UEFI Boot should be set to Disabled
    Quick Boot should be Disabled
StartUp device Menu prompt should be Disabled2
    Quick Boot Should be Disabled
    USB Boot should be Enabled
    Secure boot Should be Disabled
    Hope this helps

  • Problems installing an SSD Drive in my 17-J050us

I purchased an HP 17-j050us laptop with the intent to upgrade the HD to an SSD drive to upgrade performance.
My laptop works well, I have had no problems with it.  However, when I tried to do a clone from my laptop's drive to my purchased seperately SSD drive (Intel 335 240 GB SSD) the cloning procedure would not work.
I ran Intel's data migration tool, and the SSD was recognized and things were proceeding smoothly until the laptop restarted to perform the copy operation.  When the laptop restarted to a black screen to begin copying, the software displayed the error message "failed to find,  exception code 1101838"
After doing some research it appears the problem is relating to the inablility to successfully use data migration software with UEFI systems, such as my laptop.
Does anyone know if Data migration is even possible on newer HP laptops with UEFI partitions?  I am at a loss as to how to procede now.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

You would have to buy a windows 8 OEM DVD, not retail, or the key wouldn't work.
The only thing you could try would be to make a set of recovery disks from your original hard drive and see if they will work on the SSD.
They probably won't though if the SSD is smaller than the original hard drive but you would have nothing to lose by trying.
