Installing and Running Oracle 10g Express Edition on Microsoft Vista
My computer is running on Microsoft Vista.
I downloaded Oracle 10g Express Edition for Vista.
I ran the setup.exe. Everything went well there.
But, when I open the SQLPlus program, a window prompts me to enter my username, password and host string.
Can someone please tell me what it is expecting for these fields? I am using the same username and password I used to create my Oracle account.
But what is the host string?
Appreciate it.
Thanks.

How to install and configure Oracle 10g Express Edition on Fedora 11?
Hi everyone!
I have recently installed Oracle 10g XE on my Laptop Gateway T-1625, which has Fedora 11.
I followed the install instructions on [http://st-curriculum.oracle.com/tutorial/DBXETutorial/index.htm] , and configured the server as explained, but something is wrong... When I try to go to the database home page http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex, I get "Failed to Connect" on Firefox 3.5b4... I don't think it's because of the Firefox version because it's proved to be very stable (for a beta).
I've search for similar issues on GNU/Linux and I found this thread in these forums: [ http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=915218&tstart=0] , but the solution is for Ubuntu 9.04, and if it's possible I would like to know a specific solution for Fedora 11.
I also tried to see the oracle server status with:
# /etc/init.d/oracle-xe status
And I got this....

I hope someone can help me out and guide me on the right direction. Thanks a lot!Hi again!
After your last post I realized that the dba group and the oracle user already existed.
#groupadd dba
groupadd: group dba exists
#useradd oracle -d /home/oracle -s /bin/bash -g dba
useradd: user oracle existsHowever, I finally assigned a password for that account and changed the ownership of the /usr/lib/oracle/xe
with the commands you suggested:
passwd oracle
chown -R oracle:dba /usr/lib/oracle/xeAfter this, I can log in as the oracle user but the SELinux showed a warning and the /usr/lib/oracle/xe
is treated as the oracle home, and no .bashrc file is located on this home. This is the SELinux warning:
SELinux is preventing gdm-session-wor (xdm_t) "write" to /usr/lib/oracle/xe (lib_t).
Details:
SELinux denied access requested by gdm-session-wor. /usr/lib/oracle/xe may
be a mislabeled. /usr/lib/oracle/xe default SELinux type is user_home_dir_t, but its
current type is lib_t. Changing this file back to the default type, may fix your problem.
File contexts can be assigned to a file in the following ways.
* Files created in a directory receive the file context of the parent
directory by default.
* The SELinux policy might override the default label inherited from the parent directory
by specifying a process running in context A which creates a file in a directory
labeled B will instead create the file with label C.
An example of this would be the dhcp client running with the dhclient_t type and
creates a file in the directory /etc. This file would normally receive the etc_t type due
to parental inheritance but instead the file is labeled with the net_conf_t type
because the SELinux policy specifies this.
* Users can change the file context on a file using tools such as chcon, or restorecon.
This file could have been mislabeled either by user error, or if an normally confined
application was run under the wrong domain.
However, this might also indicate a bug in SELinux because the file should not have
been labeled with this type.
If you believe this is a bug, please file a bug report (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/enter_bug.cgi)
against this package.
Allowing Acces:
You can restore the default system context to this file by executing the restorecon command.
restorecon '/usr/lib/oracle/xe', if this file is a directory, you can recursively restore using
restorecon -R '/usr/lib/oracle/xe'.
Fix command:
restorecon '/usr/lib/oracle/xe'I suppose the command #useradd oracle -d /home/oracle -s /bin/bash -g dba is where I can define the user's home, but if this user already exists how can I modify its settings?
is SELinux preventing the .bashrc file to be created? or what could be causing this?.
I hope you know how much I appreciate your help and want to thank you for your time. -

SathishHi,
ORACLE is different from SQL Server. Forget about SQL Server for a while.
1. How do I create database in Oracle 10g Express Edition?Refer to :http://st-curriculum.oracle.com/tutorial/DBXETutorial/index.htm
2. How do I attach an existing database? As you perform in Sql Server, it won't work in oracle. It's different. I request to understand oracle architecture and basic Administration and once you familar with those things then can understand how to perform activity's on DB.

An issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on Ubuntu 10.04-64bit
Hi,
I'm running into an issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on my Ubuntu 10.04-64 bit installed machine using oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb package. The issue actually came up when I was trying to reinstall the package after uninstalling it due to some problem I had with my login credentials. To elaborate further on it, the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script does not get created when I execute the debian package and thus i'm unable to configure the required credentials and stuff after the installation. I doubt whether this has something to do with the procedure I followed when uninstalling the previous package it. But what I did was just what's mentioned in the following [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/install.102/b25144/toc.htm] user guide published by oracle.
Another important clue would be, the platform of my machine is amd64bit although I'm dealing with an installation package preferred for i386. But I believe it's the only thing available in the oracle software download section. Hence I had to use the --force-architecture option to install it. But after reading some post published on this forum, I've figured out that it does not affect the usual execution of the software. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate some help on this matter.

Edited by: 829281 on Jan 18, 2011 7:52 PMHi,
Finally I've managed to find a solution for this issue. Thanks a lot for all the replies.
Here's how I got rid of it.
Addressing all the facts one by one,
1.The problem of not getting the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script generated was avoided
by removing all the configuration files that were previously created while installing
the product. The following command can be used to accomplish that task.
*$ dpkg --purge oracle-xe*
2.Next, Initially the password I used during the configuration process was "admin".
Although I tried a couple of times installing the product providing the aforementioned
password, the web UI kept prompting "Invalid Credentials" message not allowing me
to login. But, this particular issue could be avoided by giving some other simple
password.
Finally, got it working and once again thanks a bunch for taking the burden of
replying this thread.
Cheers,

Installing Oracle 10g Express Edition on Red Hat Linux
Hi,
I am new with Linux Os and have to install oracle 10g Express Edition on Red Hat Linux Os for a customer. So before proceeding, I need some guidelines.
1) which Linux(freeware) flavor should I install ?
2) is there any virtual enviornment available for Linux Os on which I can install 10g Express Edition database ?
3) If available, is there any difference in using the Linux Os in Virtual enviornment and actual installing Linux ? will there be any difference in installing database and configuration for both the cases?
4) need download link for latest version of Red Hat Linux setup

And failing that, also offers another RPM package "oracle-validated" which will cause the installation of the necessary prerequisites.
But... you mentioned customer: if this is a revenue-producing situation and customer money is at stake, I strongly recommend they obtain commercial O/S support with either Oracle, Red Hat, or maybe SuSE/Novell. Compared to the cost of a downed business, an O/S support arrangement is cheap, cheap, cheap.

Not installing Oracle 10g Express Edition Beta 2
Hi,
I am in problem to install Oracle 10g Express Edition Beta 2 on Windows 2000 Pro. I have download OracleXE.exe but when i am double clicking on it, it is not working. What are the problems? Please help me
DulalHello,
Oracle 10g XE is rather specific and, I'm not sure that you can upgrade it to 10.2.0.4 .
However, Oracle published an Upgrade Guide for Oracle Express Edition but, it's limited to *10.2.0.3*:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/server.102/b32391/toc.htm
But be careful:
Once you have upgraded to Oracle Database 10g, you cannot downgrade back to Oracle Database Express Edition.Hope this help.
Best regards,
Jean-Valentin

Oracle 10g Express Edition and Forms 6i
Hi,
Need to know if Oracle 10g express edition supports forms 6i or not?
Please advise.
Thanks you very much. Thanks for the answers.
Yes, XE universal does not work, but XE Western European does. I am having a hard time to configure Net8. The net configuration tools simply crash right away every time I try to run them. The sql*plus on form side crashes when I hit the connect button. The only thing that can run with no problem is form. I had to manually edit the tnsnames.ora file on form side, setting host=computer name and sid=XE. Tried many times until it worked. -
Installing Discoverer with Database Version Oracle 10g Express Edition
Hello,
Is it possilbe to install Discoverer with database version Oracle 10g Express Edition? I have Oracle Fusion Middleware 11.1.1.1.0 on my Windows XP machine as well. If so, can someone please provide me a link to the Discoverer download.
Regards,
KellyNote that the Personal Edition of the database is 'the most powerful' version, in that it contains all features and options of the Enterprise Edition (expect RAC and Enterprise Manager packs)
As such, the Personal Edition, at a mere USD$400-500 is one of the most cost effective for-fee products that Oracle has in it's inventory. It is targeted at the developer. And it comes with the complete set of Sample Data, whereas XE has a very limited subset (since it does not support all functionality).
Express Edition is indeed free, but it is not supported, and can not be patched. OTOH it does have a lighter footprint.
Again, I am not sure whether Disco 11g is compatible with Express Edition. (It's on my schedule for December ...) -
Issues during reinstallation Oracle 10g express edition and Forms 6i
I've been racking my head over this issue for the past two three days. Exasperated, I tried searching in the forums but could not find a specific scenario like this.
I am facing issues while trying to get forms 6i to work with oracle 10g Express edition
i have windows XP home edition (installed service pack 2) and installed oracle 10g express edition as well as the oracle 10g express client and SQL developer on the same machine. The database started fine and I was able to use Enterprise manager.
After that I tried installing Forms 6i and whatever i try i am not able to connect to the database from Forms though I was able to connect easily from SQL developer. I used to get the error 12154 "TNS:could not resolve service name"
I dont know if Forms 6i expects the database connector string in some particular format. I searched on the net and found some people solved the issue by reinstalling the database software.
My machine name was complex so I changed it as well and reinstalled the software. Again the DB was fine and connections were fine but no way I could get forms to connect to the DB. All the time
I tried installing Forms to the same folder that Oracle express edition home in the hope that it might fix the problem. That only caused my database to crash. The oracle xe service shows as started but the Enterprise manager link does not work and it seems the database is down. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling client and server to no avail.
Has anyone gone through such a situation and solved this ? Appreciate your help. The statement about XP Home is correct, but in this case I would say the initial problem (Forms and ORA-12154) is independent of that, it also happens in a supported environment. I think it's the old problem, a second Oracle home was installed, but tnsnames.ora containing the connect informations is located in the first home.
Either tnsnames.ora is copied from to <Second_ORACLE_HOME>\network\admin or the environment variable TNS_ADMIN is set system-wide to <First_ORACLE_HOME>\network\admin.
I think now it's necessary to create a clean machine (remove all Oracle components as explained in the database installation guide for Windows). Then repeat the installation , but XE and Forms 6i in different ORACLE_HOMEs.

Backing up all data and objects of Oracle 10g Express Edition...
Hi,
I have tables, packages, views, procedures, etc. in Oracle 10g Express Edition, running on Windows XP. I would like to create a backup of the complete database (objects, relationships, all data, etc) into a file that I can restore in case the database crashes.
What do I do?
Thanks.markk2 wrote:
I am actually using it for Production. Yes, I would need objects and data.I would suggest to look at the Standard Edition as well if you are using it for production.
Is there a way to backup everything without data and then backup everything with data? Also, is there a way to restore everything without data and then restore everything with data? What's the meaning of "backup everything withiut data" and "then backup everything with data" ? The data is in the tables alone. The rest of the objects are not containing data but are using it, be it views, procedures etc. There is no such restore like without data. Without data, all what you would be getting would be structures of the tables which is going to be of no use. The export/import tool, is a simple tool which can put the tables (and other objects as well) along with their data in your dumpfile . In the situation of loss of a table, you can do an import from that dump file and you can restore the table back(with or without data, depends on the choice of yours while running Import command) . But this is just going to be a logical recovery of the object(s). For a complete database, it's better to use RMAN which would copy the datafiles and keep it with itself. Later, when you have a crash, you can restore those files to get teh database recovered. But if you want complete security, its better to put your db in the archive log and then do the backup along with the archive log files.
