Installing any version of iTunes 8

Whenever I try to install it, it comes up with an error. It says:
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
I have had this on both 8 and 8.0.1. I don't know why it comes up and I haven't seen anything on the forums, though I haven't had time to look past the second page or so...

Some people have found that manually removing Apple Software update and then using the Microsoft installer cleanup utility to clean up the Apple software update installer works for this.
I have given a method for the complete removal of iTunes but as a first go, you might try just doing the removal for Apple Software Update with clean up and then using the downloaded iTunes Installer to install the new iTunes.
== uninstall with cleanup ==
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime (the one without iTunes)
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program.
To run the program – All Programs>>Windows Install Cleanup
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
XP
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
Vista
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
*If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry*, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.
When you get to deleting Quicktime files in the system32 folder as advised in the method, you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
Restart your PC.
Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)
Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.
If you don’t see an entry for one of the programs that did not uninstall, look out for blank entries or numeric entries that look like version numbers e.g. 7.x for Quicktime or 1.x for Bonjour.
restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.
If it does, install iTunes.

Could you post your diagnostics for us please?
In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:
    ... and click "Next".
When you get through to the final screen:
... click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste the diagnostics into a reply here. (Use your Ctrl-V keyboard shortcut to paste.)

  • Cant install any version of itunes on windows vista, does anybody know of a fix?

cant install any version of itunes on windows vista, does anybody know of a fix?

Since you don't say why it won't install, here is what I have found to work on a Vista machine, 32-bit:
Download but do not install iTunes file from Apple site
    Stop anti-virus and firewall
    Restart computer
    Login as Admin
    Run iTunes installation
    Turn anti-virus and firewall on
Restart and login as regular user
Vista likes to leave a lot of installers running in the background even when they finish and that interfers with the iTunes installer.

  • Why do i keep getting an error message of 2096 when installing any version of itunes

Why do  I keep getting ann error of 2096 when downloading any version of itunes.  It tells me to delete itunes and reinstall.

That one is often a compatibility mode problem. Try the following document, only be sure that none of the boxes in the compatibility mode tab are checked (not just the compatibility mode box itself):

  • Repeated failure to install ANY version of iTunes...

I have two iPods, and, for the past three days, I have repeatedly failed at every turn to successfully install iTunes on a notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium. The issue began with failure to successfully download and run the latest update. I went ahead and uninstalled everything having to do with iPods and iTunes. I have repeatedly been presented with the message, "Verify that you have sufficient privileges...". I went into the command prompt and registry and zero'd out the administrator in the HKEY, per some instuctions I found elsewhere, which opened a new "Administrator" account. I have attempted to run any and all d/l versions of iTunes as the administrator. I even went back to an old CD-ROM that came with the Nano and tried to run that. Nothing. I've followed the recommendation made by Moose all over these forums and had no success.
Versions of iTunes I have attempted install and had no luck:
    7.6.1.9
    7.0.2.16
    6.0.4.2
When I tried to install the iPod software from the CD-ROM, I got repeated messages that stated, "Couldn't Create Service".
"Service 'Apple Mobile Device' could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient..."
"Service 'Bonjour service' could not be installed. Verify..."
"iTunes installer was interrupted before the requested operations...could be completed"
So I guess what I have now are a couple of very expensive paperweights. It is becoming increasingly difficult to not resort to violence! For the first time in six years, I've craved a cigarette!!!
    Anyone?!?

Can you install it using a different Windows user account?
Can you successfully install QuickTime standalone?

  • HELP, can't install any version of iTunes on new laptop

Hi, I just got a new Dell XPS 1210, I turned off all of the security Sw and tried to downlaod V7 software from the site, it loaded than said itunes had a problem and had to close, I tried it at least 5 times with no joy, I than moved a file from my old laptop (V6.0.4) and it loaded and said had to shut down due to a problem, i spent 3 hours on the phone with Dell tech support who told me they had no idea, does anyone have any ideas why no version of iTunes will launch on my new system? (XP Pro, with 2GB RAM, 80GB HD)
    Thanks from a newbie

    3rdtoy,
If iTunes is crashing, why don't you get a crash log and send it to those lazy Apple engineers.
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
    drwtsn32 -i
    And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log" If there's already a file there, it most likely has multiple crash logs in it (new crash logs are just appended to the end of the file). So, delete this file. This will make sure you're not sending extra information I don't need. These crash logs are text files, so you can open them in notepad or whatever to see what information you're sending.
So, get the machine setup to collect crash logs, do the thing that makes iTunes crash. Send it to our buddy Roy. It doesn't hurt to put the URL to this discussion thread because he gets a lot of these messages and is easily confused. Tell him Toonz sent ya.

  • Cannot install ANY version of iTunes

    Alright...
A while ago, I tried upgrading to iTunes 7.6 unsuccessfully. Every time I tried "iTunes installer" I got "Preparing to install..." and then Headline: iTunes + Quicktime with error message of "The folder path 'My Pictures' contains an invalid character. I press "OK" and I get "iTunes Installer Completed" with "The installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured. To retry these operations as a later time, please run the installer again. Click Finish to exit the installer."
Each subsequent attempt produced same response. I then deleted all existence of iTunes off my computer and tried installing iTunes with my old software that came with my 2005 generation iPod. Same response. I tried getting a 7.5 version off Hippo download or whatever, same response.
I downloaded Windows Genuine Advantage validation plug-in with no solution.
I then downloaded Windows Installer Clean-Up and I don't understand what I am supposed to do with it. Does my answer lie with this Clean-up program, or elsewhere?
    Help!

Although the following document refers to a different program, it's worth a crack with that "The folder path 'My Pictures' contains an invalid character" message on an iTunes install, too:

  • Can't install ANY version of iTunes

So I downloaded the monstrosity that is iTunes 7 and suddenly my iPod wouldn't work with it.
Whenever I tried to upgrade to iTunes 7.0.2, the updater would come to a standstill and do nothing.
So a few users on here gave me some suggestions on how to install iTunes 6.
First I deleted iTunes 7, as well as the iTunesX file from Library>Receipts.
Then I downloaded iTunes 6 and ran the installer.
No. Way. The iTunes 6 installer is freezing as well.
What is going on with my computers ability to install iTunes?

Try and d/l a fresh .dmg.

  • Cannot install latest version of iTunes 10.6.

Running 64 bit Windows Vista Home . Failed to install latest version of iTunes 10.6 with error message "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.......click OK , or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package iTunes64msi"
After using this source in the box below and clicking OK it comes up with another error reading: "the file C:\Users|My name\AppData\Local\Apple Software Update\iTunes64msi' is not a valid installation package for iTunes. Try to find installation package 'iTunes64.msi" in a folder from which you can install iTunes".
As I could not find this file I then uninstalled iTunes, Bonjour, Apple Software Update, Apple mobile device support, and Quicktime and all related files as instructed from iTunes support page and tried to re-install all again. Unfortunately they all installed except iTunes which came up with the same error messages again.
Is this an Apple or Windows problem?...........HELP!

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.......click OK , or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package iTunes64msi"
    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Can't install new version of itunes or quicktime

Like others, I get the error message Apple Application Support needed to run itunes Helper. Uninstall itunes then instal again. I have repeatedly tried to instal new version of itunes having uninstalled (following troubleshooting page) the old version. I also get the Microsoft windows message Windows installer stopped working and was closed. When I try to install Quick Time on its own I get the message "An error occurred during the installation of assembly Microsoft VC.80,CRT.... What can I do?

In general, these ones tend to be caused by underlying problems on the PC that can prevent Windows Updates from installing. So my main strategy with them is to try to fix the Windows Update issues. If we can get Windows Updates flowing again, that generally clears up the iTunes install errors +en passant.+
Head into your Windows Update, and check for any new updates. Do any fail? If so, open your Update History and doubleclick on the failure entries to bring up a small box with alphanumeric error message codes. Are you getting 8000FFFFs? (They often seem to be associated with an iTunes-install 0x800736FD.)
If you're getting 8000FFFFs, try the following Microsoft document:
    [Windows Update Error 8000FFFF|http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Windows-Update-Error- 8000FFFF]
Head back to Windows Update, and stock up on any updates you're behind on. Once you're completely up to date in that regard, try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Cannot run any version of iTunes 7.6.029

I have been unable to get any version of iTunes greater than 7.6.029 to run on my laptop. I have used the Apple Software Update tool to install, I have downloaded and done completely clean installations, attempting to remove any and all traces of iTunes and Quicktime from my system, then installing. However, any version more recent crashes immediately on attempting to open. Quicktime crashes as well. I can always uninstall and go back to version 7.6.029, which will run just fine.
    Any ideas?

Have you installed any of the following:
ACE & K-Lite mega codecs package, QT alternative, Storm codec, WinAVI video converter
If so there are serious compatibility issues and you will have to uninstall them if you want later version of Quicktime to work. The developers seem to have trouble keeping up with new Quicktime versions so you are always likely to have crashes after an upgrade.
If you decide to remove the codecs,
Download the version of QUicktime that does not include iTunes:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Remove Quicktime using the method for Quicktime here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
WHen you get to your system32 folder you can delete any files or folder with QUicktime in the name.
Restart and install The QUicktime you download - if it works, try iTunes.
If you want to upgrade iTunes download and save the installer to your desktop rather than using upgrade.
