Installing AppleWorks on Intel Mac

I am about to buy a MacBook. As a teacher with older Macs in my classroom, I still use AppleWorks. However, as I recall the disk I use to install AppleWorks is an OS 9 program that I then update using the 6.2.9 updater to run under OS X. Since the Intel Macs don't support Classic, is there a way I will be able to install AppleWorks?

Welcome to Apple Discussions
Whether or not the installer you have will run in OS X depends on when it was made. The installers for AppleWorks 6.2 or higher, after mid-2001 or so, are OS X installers. Otherwise, copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from the Applications folder from an older Mac to the Intel Mac. Burning it to a CD will give you a backup should you ever need to reinstall. Do not copy over any preferences (except the Button Bar preferences if you have customized the Button Bar) or the AppleWorks User Data folder. To keep within the Apple end user license, remove AppleWorks from the first Mac.

  • Installing Tiger on Intel Mac, do I need a special install disk?

As in one that's specific to an Intel Mac as opposed to a PowerPC. Just trying to figure this all out.
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi there,
Yes you do, all the Tiger Install Disks for IntelMacs are Machine specific & Gray in color, add to that, if the IntelMac came with Leopard, then you cannot install Tiger on them. There never was a Retail Tiger Disk for IntelMacs, (maybe 10.4 Server, not sure on that one).

  • Appleworks on intel mac?

I have an old ibook with disks, and I just bought a new imac. Although I am a huge mac fan, I am very disappointed to see that I have NO word processing program on my new mac. Is it not possible to use my old software disks to put appleworks on my new mac?
Gosh, I know mac poo-poos the boring, business-like, spread-sheet and word processing kind of user, but I want to use my word processing program for writing! That's a creative, artsy endeavor too isn't it?!
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Jane,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
Whether you can install from your old disks depends on how old they are—up to 2002 the installer ran in Mac OS 9, which is not supported on the intel based Macs.
An easier way to move AppleWorks from your old iBook to your new iMac is to burn the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from the iBook onto a CD, then copy the folder into the applications folder on your iMac.
If the iBook has a Firewire port, you can connect the two machines via firewire then start the iBook in Target mode (hold the T key down until the Firewire icon appears on the display), then simply copy the AppleWorks 6 folder from the iBook (which will appear on the iMac as a Firewire connected external drive) to the Applications folder on the iMac.
The AppleWorks User licence permits the application to exit on only one computer at a time, so to stay within the terms of the licence you'll need to remove AW from the iBook.

  • Trouble installing CS4 onto Intel Mac

Good day to all, I have a problem.
I have an Intel Imac with OD 10.4.11 and am unable to install CS4 Design Premium. I have all external devices unpluged. The progress bar only gets this far (please see below) and then stops moving for hours. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks for the info. Previous attempts were all done w/o any apps running, and then in safe boot config just to waste some more time. Here's the log entry:

  • Installing OS9 on Intel Mac

I am trying to install OS 9.0 onto my Intel MacBook Pro using Sheep Shaver. I have been following the online instructions here: http://www.atpm.com/12.09/classic.shtml
However after installing the OS and restarting the emulator I keep getting the flashing floppy disk icon, unless I insert the CD inwhich case it just boots from the CD. How can I get to actually book from the OS installed on the disk image.

  • V10.3 says "can't install" because my Intel Mac is "PPC"

Something is really wacky. I DL'd the 10.3 Flash Player installer on my friend's Intel iMac (and, yes, it's a 27" Core2Duo 2009 model running 10.6.8). When I attempt to install it, the installer complains that I need the PPC version and won't install. It directs me to a link where I can DL the PPC installer which, of course, won't work on an Intel iMac.
    How do I resolve this?

    Jay,
I have the same problem when installing upgrades to existing programs.  I've searched the communities pretty thoroughly and there doesn't seem to be a permanent fix for the problem, but there are two work arounds that seems pretty robust.
First, some folks have reported if when you get the first "info.plist in use" error to clear the error message and simply wait instead of attempting to move the application into the application folder (or the icon in the dmg file for the application folder) again.  I have found personally that waiting about 30 seconds often solves the problem.
The other option is to "manually" open the application folder and throw the older version of the application into the trash and then drag the new version into the applications folder.  Be aware with this strategy that sometimes you will get the same info.plist error message when trying to discard the existing app.  Again, waiting seems to solve the problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Installing CS2 Upgrade on Intel Mac

I am just about to take the plunge and get an Intel Mac. I'm using CS2 legacy files for a number of customers. I have CS3 full product but the CS2 is an upgrade. In the past I have upgraded from Illustrator 9 (Full Product) but obviously this is not going to install on an Intel Mac.
Is there anyway of using the AI9 serial as part of a CS2 installation? If I need to keep my old Mac for CS2 then it restricts amount of cash I have for an Intel Mac.
    Thanks

Just install. During the processes the installer will search for a previous version. Tell it to stop. It will then give you 3 choices...
    1) Use the following serial number___________ (This is where you put in the AI9 #)
    2) Use this version [click to browse]
    3) Search for a previous version.

  • Consequences of installing G5 Leopard on  Intel Mac?

I bought an Intel iMac off of eBay, and it came shipped with OS X 10.4. I had a non-retail replacement DVD of 10.5 from when I had an AppleCare problem with my iMac G5, so I tried to use that disc to upgrade my OS. It never worked correctly, and on the Apple forums I was told that the replacement DVD would be hardware-specific and not function.
However, a new phenomenon has occurred.. If I completely install Tiger with the hardware-specific discs that came with my intel Mac, and then simply upgrade to Leopard- the install succeeds and the computer is ESSENTIALLY functional.
It's not perfect though. What I've observed is that (today was the 2nd time this has happened) after a couple days of untinterrupted use (including powering down/up) and having a seemingly functional iMac-- everything goes very wrong. The computer slows down to a crawl, so I leave it alone; then when the beachball goes away, I try to click something. No matter what App I choose, it will freeze up once it begins, and everything I click suddenly stops working.
So do you think this is a consequence of installing a leopard disc with G5 architecture, or that these symptoms are indicative of something wrong with the iMac itself (possibly bad RAM?). What seems strange is the install does succeed with the upgrade, and the computer works great for a good while- and then suddenly stops. One thing that always confuses/annoys me is when computers aren't consistent... I mean, theyre computers!
Please share your thoughts, thank you!

In short: A PPC Mac cannot boot an Intel version of OS X and vice-versa. You will need a full retail version of Leopard that can install either the PPC or the Intel version of OS X. Or as you have discovered your Upgrade disc will install an Intel upgrade to an Intel version of Tiger or a PPC upgrade to a PPC version of Tiger, but it will not performa a full Erase and Install.
As for migrating from a G5 to an Intel Mac see the following:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

  • Booting Intel Mac Mini from PPC OS

I had a PowerPC Mac Mini that booted off of an external hard drive. I just sold the computer, and bought a new Intel-based Mac Mini. I would like to have the new Mini boot off of the external hard drive also, so I can keep all of my settings and extensions pretty much the same. Is there any way I could make this work?

You must erase and reformat the external hard drive. So Back Up anything of importance on that drive. The PPC Mac had to have the drive formatted with Apple Partition boot drivers in order to boot the Mac after a Mac OSX Install. An Intel Mac requires that the drive be formatted with GUID Partition boot drivers. This is all covered in the Disk Utility.app in the Utilities folder.

  • IMovie 5.0.2 from iLife '06 will not UPDATE on Intel Mac?

I brought over all my programs from my 12" G4 Powerbook to the new Mac Pro with Setup assistant. iMovie opened fine and seemed to work. A couple of weeks later, after doing regular software updates & working with it, etc., the Title function stopped working. Just does not show any options for titles under that spot in the menu.
I thought I would install it fresh and maybe that would take care of the problem, so I put in my iLife '06 DVD (pre Intel) and tried to install it. It was greyed out, so I thought it couldn't install it if there was a newer version on the computer, so I put it in the trash & deleted it. (Dumb, I know) & tried to reinstall but it is still greyed out. I figuered out this is probably because the older version of iLife '06 I have is not a Universal installer.
I copied the iMovie application from my Powerbook again, and now I have the PowerPC version of iMovie 5.0.2 on my Intel Mac, but when it tries to open it hangs. The instructions for opening programs with Rosetta doesn't work since there is no option to open with Rosetta in the Get Info for it.
How do I convert the 5.0.2 to iMovie 6 so I can update it to Universal?
    Thanks!

    12" Powerbook G4 867 MHz, Mac Pro w/Apple Display   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Can't you re-run Setup Assistant to bring over iMovie HD 5 from your PowerBook again?
A "pre-Intel" (i.e; non-Universal) iLife '06 might not install on an Intel Mac (..but I don't know: I don't have an Intel Mac ..though I'd have guessed that you could install it and run it under Rosetta). It might be that your "receipts" are messed up (..in name-of-your-hard-disc>Library>Receipts>iMovie..pkg..) but don't go messing there unless you put the iMovie packages in a safe place {..Desktop..] and move them back into the Library again after you've finished fiddling about! You may need to remove later receipts in order to install an earlier version of the program.
But I don't have an Intel Mac, so can't advise further, sorry.

  • Trying to load pre-2006 lso files into Logic 8 on my new intel Mac Pro

I'm trying to load pre-2006 lso files into Logic 8 on my new intel Mac Pro, but they crash the app every time. files saved 2006 and later load OK. Anybody shed any light on this or know of a fix (other than the laborious work-around of re-saving all early lso's in logic 8 on the PPC and physically moving them via a portable drive to the new machine)?
(BTW, those files also crash the Logic 7 installed on the intel Mac.)

Upon further work with my migration, I find I was incorrect in the time frame assertion of these failed files: apparently, the creation/modification dates have nothing to do with it and the reality is that some files fail at random, while others load just fine. right now it looks to be about 50/50 Beats me why this is.
Anyway, for those interested, I've discovered a very helpful key to the quick processing of file data for a plethora of files (i. e. re-saving the "bad" lso files as Logic 8 projects on the older CPU and moving them over to my new machine), and that is the 'control key/launch' of the app. I hadn't realized that Apple had added this feature to Logic to enable easier work on multiple song files when one does not require the audio.
For those who don't know about it, the 'control key/launch' provides an option to disable the core audio at app start-up, thus allowing files to load instantly without loading the plug-in library files associated with tracks - great for copying MIDI data between song files, or in this case, re-saving a batch.
Still puzzled, though, as to why so many older lso files crash Logic when they attempt to load on my new CPU.

  • Will non-universal-binary Logic+plugins run on an Intel Mac?

    Hi,
this may sound like a dumb question, but I haven't found a straightforward answer on this question yet: will my Logic 7.1 (not Universal Binary) install on an Intel-Mac?? Our local Mac store expected that Rosatta will take care of everything, and that only performance will suffer a bit.
That would mean that all non-universal-binary plugins would run, too??!!
    Just curious...
    Thanks!

    Hi Jaap,
    In a word, nope!
It seems you're more informed than your local dealer, :o)
Rosetta will not handle the plug-ins & third party (AU) need the (U B) upgrades. You need the 7.2 (U. Binary) to run logic on the new Intel machines.

Yes, a quick search from Apple Support found it.

MacFixIt also has something to say.

From 2001 AppleWorks was shipped with a Mac OS X native installer. In other words, there was no need to install Classic just to install AppleWorks. (It was either 2001 or 2003. I can never remember, but Peggy might read this message and correct me if I'm wrong.)
Another option is to install AppleWorks on a Mac that has Classic installed, then burn the AppleWorks 6 folder to a CD, copy it onto your new Mac, and delete it from the first Mac.
... or open docs without Appleworks.
I think I tried this before and iWork won't open
    Claris/Appleworks docs.
iWork will only open word processing documents saved with AppleWorks 6.
Microsoft Office can open AppleWorks 5 and 6 word processing documents.
Also, tools like icWord and icExcel can open AppleWorks 5 and 6 word processing documents and spreadsheets. A 30 day trial is available from the web site. (Google will find them for you.)

  • I have a MacBook Pro.  I am told that I can install AppleWorks on this Intel Machine. True or False? If true do I need to have Rosetta on the compuer?

I have an Intel MacBook Pro. I have been told I can install AppleWorks 6.2.9 on this machine. Is this correct? I read somewhere I would also need Rosetta but do not know if this is correct. If so how can i get Rosetta? I can presently open my old Appl;eWorks documents with Pages but my wife insist I try to get her AppleWorks back?
I had a copy of AppleWorks 6.0 from the old days but it would not install on my MacBook. A message came up saying Apple no longer supports OS9. I can purchase a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.9 but if it want install then I would be wasting my money.

To install Rosetta you insert your initial Snow Leopard installation disk and double click optional install then double click the optional install package which will lead you through installing Rosetta. It is on the  install disk but is not installed by default.
Once you get Appleworks 6 working, assuming it then does, you can download the 6.2.9 update
