Installing Applications - Permissions Question/Problem

Hi All:
I have tried a number of searches and found variations on this, but was wondering why permissions get modified when I perform drag and drop installations of applications.
When I use an installer to install applications such as iWork, iLife, Office, and Creative Suite, and so on the permissions are always listed as system then admin then everyone, with system and admin being read/write and everyone being read only. In this situation, everything works perfectly. However, when I drag and drop to install applications such as Bento, most shareware, the permissions are listed as my user, then staff or admin, then everyone. Sometimes the staff and admin are listed read only and then the icon does not show up until I manually change this to read/write.
I have also noticed another problem when I am running in my limited access (none admin) mode: When I tried to install a NEW drag and drop application it would ask for a username and password and then install as described in the previous paragraph, but when I tried to install an UPGRADE to an application I had, it would ask me to authenticate. When I clicked authenticate it would go straight to the replace dialog and then when I click replace button it would fail. In the process of failing it would damage the application that was already installed. As a result I would then need to manually remove the damaged application and drop the upgrade back in to the folder, at which it would correctly ask for the username and password.
Something is wrong here. As a none admin user I should not be able to damage applications when prevented from installing them.
I've tried the usual permission fixes, but there must be something that is not quite right. I have even tried a reinstall.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

this is normal and what you describe is exactly how it should work. when an app uses an installer it runs as root and the installer manages permissions on files it creates. they are always owned by root (=system in Finder GUI). when you install something by drag and drop then the application is owned by you and the group listed is your primary group which is staff.
I have also noticed another problem when I am running in my limited access (none admin) mode: When I tried to install a NEW drag and drop application it would ask for a username and password and then install as described in the previous paragraph, but when I tried to install an UPGRADE to an application I had, it would ask me to authenticate. I don't know what exactly happened here but I'm guessing you tried to upgrade an application that was installed by a different user originally. that might create permissions problems. but since all such apps are installed by drag and drop you can always trash the old app and install the updated one by drag and drop. that will always work (you'll have to authenticate of course).
I've tried the usual permission fixes, but there must be something that is not quite right.
repair permissions will not touch any 3rd party apps or files so it will have zero effect on this issue.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • After Installing Application Server - Problem connecting to my Databases

I have 10g installed on my Windows server, and have no problems connecting to my database(s). After I install Application Server 10g, I am no longer able to connect to any of them, as if the TNSNAMES.ORA file is no longer configured correctly. I am training myself on these applications. Anyone have any suggestions what is happening behind the scenes?
    Thank you,
    Daniel Nadler

After deploying a jsf application via the web interface of the application server enterprise manager I tried to connect to the 10g database - and it failed with the same error as yesterday?
I really don't unterstand what is going on. I would really appreciate it if someone could point me out where to start digging for a solution / unterstanding of the problem.
Quoting this thread (installing db on same server as AS): 10gAS and Database Server on the same machine
    >
Yes, you can do this. Here are some guidelines:
    (1) Make sure your system requirements are sufficient to handle the application server and the database. The recommendation is to add the AS system requirements and the DB system requirements together.
    (2) Install each product into its own Oracle home. For example:
    - Oracle Home 1: AS Mid-tier
    - Oracle Home 2: AS Infrastructure (including Metadata Repository)
    - Oracle Home 3: Database
    (3) If your AS installation includes a Metadata Repository, make sure that the
Metadata Repository and the database use a different SID and global db name.
    (4) It is possible that the Metadata Repository and the database can share
port 1521. Review this information before you start your AS installation:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/win.1012/install.1012/install/reqs.htm#CIHEBFDG
The installation guide under (4) tells me that I don't have to worry since I use a new listener version.
To complete the confusion: on my virtual test machine oracle 10g and oracle AS 10g work fine side by side?? Perhaps because I did a Standard Edition install of the database (on the real machine I used Enterprise Edition)? Is there a way to figure out what kind of install I did?
Lots of questions, any help or links are really appreciated! Thanks in advance!
    ------------------ EDIT -------------------
Whoops, I might had a problem with a not correctly shut down database (just shutted windows down without killing the instance - didn't know this wasn't ok). Still evaluating the issue. But to say the least, it seems the application server has nothing to do with my problem :)

i have a problem in my account every time i want to install application from app Store on my iphone a message shows that my Apple ID has been disabled, i creat a new password and still that message shoes ,what is the problem ?can you help me please???!!!!

If your account is disabled then you might be able to re-enable it via this page : http://appleid.apple.com, then 'reset your password'
You might then need to log out of your account on your phone by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and then log back in so as to 'refresh' the account on it
If that doesn't fix it then you might need to contact iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

  • Problems installing Application Express  - Help Please

    Hi
I have the personal edition of oracle and i have a database instance set up in entreprise manager. Now I'm trying to install application express to the database via SQL Plus. I run into two problems
    1. It says in the document that you need to log into SQL as SYS rather than SYSMAN, when I do log in as SYS i get the error message saying that I need to choose either SYSDBA or SYSOPER so I do rather than normal but I need a username/password to log in and I don't know what Username/password they are referring to. I tried a couple of usernames and passwords already and have been unsuccessful.
    2. So instead of logging in as SYS, I logged into the SQL Plus as SYSMAN. I load the apexin.sql file onto the SQL Plus and I push on execute. The it asks me to enter the 5 things, so i enter "password, SYSAUX, SYSAUX, temp, /i/" and i get the error message "SP2-0916: Scheme not supported"
I have tried several times already. I am working off a toshiba Satellite P200 and it is windows Vista. What am I do wrong please HELP!
    Carol

Hi there I'm still running into some trouble here
When I am logged into my Enterprise Manager as SYS on my laptop
I scroll to the bottom to open up iSQL plus and once I'm in, I get to the iSQL Plus Role Connection and there is 3 choices - 1) Normal 2) SYSOPER 3) SYSDBA
I can log into normal with SYSMAN but when i choose SYS, it tells me that I must choose either SYSOPER or SYSDBA
If I choose either of those, I get another login pop up saying that I need to log into the DBA system, but I don't know what username/password they are referring to. I tried logging into iSQL plus and tried executing sys/<sys password> as sysdba but it doesn't work. Please help!

  • Installing Applications problem

Hello, I cannot find a solution for this problem - can somebody help me?
    Here is it:
I just purchased my MAC PRO few weeks ago, and started installing some applications.
But a problem occurs with some old applications.
The problems is that when I click on installers, the message appears:
"You cannot open the application "APPLICATION NAME",because it is not supported on this system".
Can you help me with this? It happens with many applications, including PRO TOOLS LE and other pluggins that I use.
If you cannot help me with this, please tell me who can I ask.
    Thank you very much.
MAC PRO   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Your new Mac is one with an Intel processor. The old apps you are trying to install might be PPC apps (should work with Rosetta which emulates PPC on the Intel) or Classic apps (OS 9 and prior which will not run at all on Intel Macs).
Let us know which of these situations applies to the apps you are trying to install. Be sure to check on the various websites of the companies that produced your apps to see if updates are available.
Of course if any of the apps are PC ones these will have to be run using either Boot Camp or Parallels and a copy of Windows.

  • Installing Applications Question

    new user here.
I sometimes get a "ThisApp.app" is an application downloaded from the Internet are you sure you want to open it?" /both/ when I start an app from the ThisApp.app icon in Applications (I think) and from the icon that I have Kept in the Dock. It then goes on to say "ThisApp.app is on the disk image....".
Can someone explain if this is a problem and more generally help me understand the disk image?
The deal is that I download a disk image, double click on it - and then ostensibly I am given a dialog box that gives me an opportunity to drag the app to the "Applications folder" (which I see as an image in the dialog)? After this I then eject the disk image?
Should all apps give me an opportunity to drag it the an Applications folder and if not should I do this manually?
    Thanks.

    Hi. Many thanks.
Happy to be back for a number of reasons but still a sharp learning curve.
I am inclined to keep the dmg's in a folder that has all my installed applications so that I can back this information up for future installs/re-installs.
Can I please ask you about the error in the OP however? For instance, if I d/l a dmg, double click on it, drag the App icon into the App icon folder (for instance or in some instances I guess it installs automatically and I don't get asked to do this?) - and then I open the Application -
I get an icon on the dock which in many cased I "Keep in Dock". Yes?
If I then doubleclick the icon in the dock I get the "error" I listed which is confusing to me. For instance it says something about the app being downloaded from the internet. But since I installed it and kept the icon in the dock, shouldn't mac know this is no longer an issue and just let me start the software?
Is this an error that is happening because the dmg is still in the same place (not moved or deleted) and mac /thinks/ it needs to warn me?
Will this "error" go away if I delete the dmg or otherwise move it perhaps?
It seems like an unnecessary warning...
Thanks again and yes I am liking the feeling of being back...

ServerManagerCMD.exe is a deprecated utility and (as far as I know) is only found on Server 2008 versions, so I'm surprised it's needed for the preinstaller.  Are you trying to install SharePoint 2010?
Running this page through Google Translate should give you an clearer idea on getting this installed.

  • IMac Won't Allow Me To Install Applications Or Even Open Folders

I have an iMac Intel Core Duo 2.33 GHz, with 2GB of Ram running 10.5.4.
When I booted my Mac last week I noticed a brown area on my screen. After the machine booted I could only open the applications that were in my dock or do a search for them through Spotlight and start the application from there, since it took many clicks to get to my Applications directory to open after clicking GO in the menu bar.
Even after the Applications directory opened (which took forever) I was unable to click on ANY of the applications and scrolling was extremely slow or not at all. I also had to Refresh the Finder just to get it to show up at the top of my screen or close the Application window.
I took the machine in for repair and they replaced the screen and told me that not being able to open folders, go to the Application folder or ANY folder was a software issue and not a hardware issue. They recommended I remove EVERYTHING in my Startup Login Options when I got home and that would fix the problem, it did not - I removed all 4 applications in the startup and nothing changed.
I rarely install applications, but I faithfully repair permissions at least daily and I have installed all of the latest updates Apple released in the last 2 weeks.
Thing I have done so far
    1. Repaired Permissions
    2. Verified The Disk
    3. Reinstalled Leopard And All The Updates
    4. Run Most of the options built into Onyx, Maintenance and Mac Pilot, since I have them already installed.
Nothing has made a difference, I am still unable to run anything in my applications directory, open ANY folder on my desktop or any other directory, drag an icon to my applications folder or drag a folder or icon on my desktop.
The only things I can do is run what few applications I have in my Dock and search for Applications using Spotlight and run them from there. They come up quickly and run just fine once they come up.
Any help or suggestions someone could provide would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much for your time!
    Randy

Repairing permission daily is a complete waste of time and will not help you. In fact, repairing the disk permissions needs to only be done about 2-3 times a year at best.
You say you verified the disk but did you repair it? Did you get a message that the "disk appears to be o.k."? What kind of install did you do? My guess is you did an archive and install.
Onyx is a troubleshooting tool and should not be used on a regular basis for anything. Caches do not need to be cleaned on a regular basis and everything else Onyx and similar utilities claim to do are handled by the system automatically. Do not use these utilities unless you are having a problem.
My guess is you have a serious problem with file corruption.
Have you tried creating a new account? Try that and see if the problem follows to the new account or not.

  • Install Application - TextArea inside JScrollPane

I've been working on an install application to install another one of my programs (next/accept/next/ finish type of thing) and had a couple questions and would appreciate any help anyone can give.
    Some Background info:
I made images and have them display as image icons through jlabels for the buttons and background. The labels have classes applying various mouselisteners (Mousepressed, MouseEntered, MouseExited, etc) changing the images and moving from screen to screen. I have my layout set to null, not for any particular reason, but because I have no formal education in layout managers.
    1) Is there a conical solution to moving through various windows? That is, right now I move through the various 'screens' with a check on an int called state, that gets incremented and decremented through forward and back buttons. I looked at some code given to us on a test by our teacher (we had to find bugs) and saw that he had implemented a fake "state" interface, with constants like "Account_State" to control where you were in the program. This seems a bit easier to read than ints, but is there a correct built in version of his states?
    2) On the second screen I have a license agreement (actually required for the application that gets installed), and a checkbox. The license is held inside of a JTextArea(scroll) inside a JScrollPane(textscroll). The JScrollPane is extending in weird ways. The following is a stripped down version of my code (it runs and demonstrates the problem):

}Sorry about all the text for the agreement. I've tried a number of different things I got from searching the forums at different points in the code (setting the number of rows/columns, setting max and min sizes, etc etc) The code above that wraps the text I could have sworn I tried 3 times before it magically worked... I also tried using the awt component for textareas that had the scrollbars built in, but scrapped it after having even more difficulties with that one. I'm trying to get the textbox to only go down about 300 px and 300 px to the right. Using the graphical editor to change it produces a null pointer error at compile time(?!?). Can anyone help me to get the textbox to render as I want it to?
