Installing applications using external HDD in OS X 10.5

Hi,
I am trying to install some applications, which are in from of .dmg files in my external HDD and I am trying to install directly from Ext. HDD in OS X 10.5 on MAC G5, I found that when i disconnect my Ext. HDD, I am unable to run the application, because OS X 10.5 is looking for the source.
So, do I need to keep .dmg file in my MAC all the time? otherwise what is the solution?
I really appreciate for your help in advance.
Thanks.

no, You've misunderstood me. I should have made it more clear. let me explain again. say, you have a .dmg on desktop. double-click on it. this will mount this dmg as a drive. you'll see a new finder window popup with the contents of that drive and you'll also have a new drive icon both on your desktop and in the sidebar.
inside that drive there will be the application you want to install. drag THAT (not the dmg itself) to the Applications folder. then eject the drive mounted from the dmg. you can now delete the dmg file or archive it in case you need to reinstall. the application you've installed is now in your Applications folder and you can just use that from now on and forget about the dmg. I hope this makes sense.

The list of supported Windows OS can be found in (Oracle E-Business Suite Installation and Upgrade Notes Release 12 (12.1.1) for Microsoft Windows Server (32-bit) [ID 761567.1]). If you want to use Linux, you can find the list of supported OS in the Linux docs referenced in [ID 850008.1].
Windows 7 can be your host OS, and pick one of the supported Windows/Linux to be your guest OS. You can use VMWare to install a supported OS and lay down the R12 software on this VM.
HDD - 100gb
External HDD - 500gbYou have sufficient space so you should be good -- The total space required for a standard system (not including the stage area) is 85 GB for a fresh install with a production database, and 233 GB for a fresh install with a Vision Demo database. Running Rapid Install from a stage area requires at least 47 GB to accommodate the file system and database files in the stage area.
You can still install EBS R12 on an external HDD with no issues.
Ram- 2gbYou need at least 4 GB for the R12 instance, and more RAM for the OS, so please consider adding more RAM.

• Installing Mavericks to external HDD, can I have more than one Partition?

Hi,
I am about to install Mavericks on an external SSD drive, which I shall be using instead of the internal HDD. My question is do I have to format the SSD with one partition, or can I use 2 or 3 ?
Thanks

Just to update I bought the WD My Book Studio 2tb as I like WD drives and it comes in a matching aluminum case.
I am using it as my boot drive and also my main storage. I put a copy on it of all the apps and software I had on the internal drive.
Boot up time with internal HDD @ 32 seconds
Boot up time WD external HDD @ 43 seconds (USB 3.0)
Not too shabby! Look forward to getting an external SSD drive connected via thunderbolt (might then match my new p.c. with a boot up time of 9 seconds)

Hi Win8FanBoy,
As you can't modify the package, I suggest you checking if the application can be executed well in your win8 machine without the installer. You could get the application, run it directly in your machine. then check if it would be corrupt.
If it still be corrupt, I'm afraid that you have to access to modify the package to make it compliant with win8 64-bit.

• MacBook Pro 10.7.3 Won't boot using External HDD

Hi I have created an image on my Mac that has 10.7.4 and I wanted to try it on my new MacBook Pro with 10.7.3. I am able to select the external HDD but wouldn't let me boot. Same image works on another Mac.

Hi ...
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies
If any of the boxes on the left are selected, deselect then click OK then restart your Mac.
If it's not a proxy issue, if you have anti virus software installed, disable that.
Try turning off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security & Privacy
Apps such as Little Snitch can prevent access to the internet.

• “Using external HDD as an Ipod”

I have a external HDD with lost of music on and I want to use and play from this from time to time. My problem is that if I Iwant to use and see this ”external” files in Itunes I have to create shortcuts (drag and drop, without coping to my internal disk). Ok, this works fine, but when I disconnect the external drive these shortcuts still sits in my Itunes library together with my internal mp3´s and I will get error message if I accidentally choose one of them. I would like to connect my drive and have it ”pop up” the same way that my Ipod does so when I disconnect the ”links” disappear as well.
Any smart suggestions?
THANKS IN ADVANCE

Unhappily, this is not possible with iTunes. I too hope they'll add such feature in the future.
P.S.
There are some AppleScripts available which let you switch between two or more versions of your Library. This might be a partial solution for you. Here's a link:

• Installing Applications on external FireWire drive - a good idea?

Hello,
I'm planing in using a MacBook Pro with 128GB SSD. The idea is to install only essential stuff and store other things on an external FireWire 800-enabled HDD.
How big is the general difference in acces/transmission times compared to an internal generic HDD? And is the performace sufficient to even run applications from that external drive, should I run out of space on the SSD?
Will I spot a significant difference if I'm for example editing videos where all the files and the workspace are on that external drive while only Adobe Premiere is installed on the SSD?

Is the firewire drive new? Do you have any data on it? I am guessing the answers are Yes and No. If this is the case, the drive is probably formatted wrong for the Mac Pro. Depending on the manufacturer, the drive may be formated in FAT (for windows) or as Apple Partition Map. APM is for booting PowerPC (G3, G4, and G5 Macs). You have a Mac Pro and the drive needs to have a GUID partition. Drives without a GUID partition will not be recognized as valid targets in the installer.
If you follow the rest of this thread, and you have data on the firewire drive, it will be lost unless you back it up. That is your warning. To reformat the drive, do this:
1: Open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
2: In the left column there will be a list of the drives and volumes available on the machine. The drive is listed first and the volume is indented beneath it. Select the Firewire drive, not its volume
3: On the right panel, select the Partition tab
4: Change the Volume Scheme setting from Current to One Partition
5: Give the new volume you are going to create a name
6: Press the Options button
7: There are three choices, GUID, APM, and MBR. Choose GUID since this is an Intel system. Press OK.
8: Press the Apply button - THIS WILL DELETE ALL DATA ON THE FIREWIRE DRIVE
Now reboot from the installation CD and perform the installation.
I will say however, that a drive with a boot OS on it is nice, but kind of useless. Isn't your data a little more important? Since you are not on Leopard, you might want to consider using ASR (the Restore tab in Disk Utility) to periodically clone your main volume to the backup volume. Then, not only do you have a bootable second drive but you also have all your data and personal settings. Hope this helps

• Panther booty: ok but still no way to install Panther on external HDD

I've looked around the posts for my specific problemo and didn't see it. So here goes my question.
I can't install Panther on my iomega external hard drive - 250 GB firewire. My powermac G4 has no trouble recognizing the iomega hard drive on the desktop, but when I reboot from the Panther disk and hit 'install' the only option to install is on my current hard drive. But when I select disk utility from within the booted computer it does recognize that the iomega hard drive is there.
Do I need to do some extra tap dancing in order to get a Mac OS onto this iomega creature? I want to run iMovie, iTunes and Garageband on it, in addition to some non-Mac apps that right now go onto the iomega with no trouble.
I don't want to use the iomega as a backup as much as I want to use it for specific memory-hogging applications.
Thanks
PowerMac G4 867 Mhz Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Like to add another wrinkle, for install experts:
I just got a Micronet 80GB firewire/USB external drive. My iBook HD is dead. I want to make the external drive a bootable for the iBook -- and also have it mountable on a PC (Win2K)machine with USB. The drive came preformatted as Fat32.
Right now I have the same situation as Sheila. OS X installer doesn't see the drive (with firewire or USB connection to the ibook). Disk doctor does. So I could erase and format as Mac OS, but...
Can I make one partition Mac file system and boot the iBook, and keep the remainder Fat 32K to be mounted by Win2K?
If not, I guess I format the whole drive with Mac file system to make it a bootable external disk, and perhaps use the LAN to access it through the Ibook.
Any tips appreciated.

• My macbook slows down after using external HDD

When I use an external drive via usb, my computer really slows down giving me no choice except reboot.
I watched memory usage with activity monitor. Free memory decreases by time and inactive memory increases with the same amount and others don't change much. If I continue using -esp. reading-, free memory comes below to 100MB and then increases a bit -I think it starts paging =other applications' memories= to system disk-, then continues to decrease. Closing the application -that use the external- do not relese memory from inactive to free but ejecting the external does. After unplugging and trying to use the other applications, I face very sluggish performance so that rebooting becomes a better-fast choice. Both NTFS and FAT partitions produce the same result and I don't have any other partition.
If I try to re-read the same file after the external drive stops spinning (sleeps), it does not start spinning but trying to read another file makes it start spining. This makes me think about some -overdone- caching problem, but don't know what causes it and how to turn it off (Tuxero's caching is already disabled in the preferences, although I think it is only for writing only).
I made some research and found nothing specific; they tell to reinstall the os or format the drive -to HFS+ -. What is causing this?
Note: All of my drives are in Spotlight's exclusion (privacy) list and using another usb slot did not change a thing.

• WD 750GB HDD won't erase or repartition, using external HDD enclosure, what am I doing wrong?

I have the late 2008 aluminum macbook running Mountain Lion with the original 250gb hard drive, and the hard drive's been sitting at over 90% full for months. I've been needing to upgrade it for a while, so I bought a 2.5" WD Scorpio Black 7200 rpm 750GB HDD and a StarTech 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure (SAT251OU2).
Once inserted into the enclosure and plugged with USB into the mac, a green light on the enclosure comes on and a message comes up reading "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." and gives me the options to Intialize..., Ignore, or Eject. To allow for the Disk Utility to see the disk, I press the Intialize...
When I run disk utility and select the 750.16 GB WDC WD75 ... HD and run erase: format Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or Partition the Drive (has a disk2s2 partition by default) to 1 Partition with the option of GUID Partition Table (and Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) and hit apply, the disk utility will run for about 30 seconds, while reading Formatting (default partition name) disk2s2 as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with name [name I specified].
The light on the external enclosure changes from green to amber when the formatting starts, then about 20 seconds in a message stating "Partition failed, Partition failed with the error: File system formatter failed," and a hard drive click sound occurs, the enclosure's lights blink green and amber (or red) for a few seconds, then shortly afterwards a message reads, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with a prompt allowing me to again start the process over: Intialize..., Ignore or Eject.
How can I format this disk and use it with my mac? I was hoping to clone my original hard drive.
HDD: Western Digital WD Scorpio Black 750 GB SATA 3 GB/s 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Internal Bulk/OEM 2.5-Inch Mobile Hard Drive

Any ideas on how to get the HDD to format, or whether it's a bad enclosure or hard drive?

• Problems Installing Win7 using External, USB DVD Drive

I have a mid 2010 15" i7 MBP which I upgraded to from 4GB to 8GB RAM courtesy of OWC. I recently upgraded the 500GB 7200RPM HD with a 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 and using an OWC Data Doubler, I replaced the DVD SuperDrive with the 500GB Hard Drive.
I used an External USB DVD Drive to install OS X SL On the SSD without issues. Also, I got all my updates and software installed and working without any problems.
I've been running great for about 2 weeks now, so I decided to install Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I ran Boot Camp Assistant and partitioned the 240GB SSD in half 120/120. Everything went fine with creating the partition. I selected to Install from the Win 7 DVD media in the USB DVD drive and rebooted. I got a grey screen. I turned the computer off and turned it back on. Holding down Option, I selected the Install DVD from the Boot Menu. I then got a screen with the Apple Logo flashing intermittently with a Circle/Cross Hatch. So I can't get the Windows Install to start to save my life. I know the External, USB DVD works since I used it to install OS X and I have no problems using it in OS X. I Know the media works because I tried a test install, without activation in a VMWare Fusion VM.
Any suggestions are appreciated?

So here is the answer. The Firmware on the MacBook Pro only supports installation of OS X from External Media and will not install operating systems from 3rd Parties. I tried to install Windows XP, Win7 Ultimate 32 & 64bit, and Ubuntu 11.04 but no success.
Supposedly, the MacBook Air does support installation of 3rd party operating systems from external media, but I have no way to confirm this.
I ended up reinstalling the internal DVD drive installing Win 7 and Ubuntu on the SSD. Using rEFI, I'm able to triple boot all 3 operating systems. Then removed the drive again and reinstalled the 2nd HD. Everything seems to be working fine.
I'm looking for someone who has experience in Mac EFI Hacking to see if there is a way to enable booting 3rd Party OSes from external media. I'm guessing someone could examine the MBA firmware and figure out how to hack that capability into the MBP.

• Install OSX using External CD

Hi all,
Working on my cousin's MacBook thats a few years old now. We determined that the hard drive failed by attaching it to a usb cable and trying on serveral computers - mac & windows. So we put in a replacement one.
The optical drive on this laptop had failed some time ago so we plugged in an external reader/writer into the USB ports, insterted a OSX disk, rebooted the laptop holding down the Option key.
The laptop doesn't appear to recognize the external CD to install from.
Is there any tricks to allowing me to do this?
Thanks in advance!
Bob

Hey Bob, unfortunately, accessing CD/DVD drive from another Mac is only for MacBook Airs. I don't know why Apple still puts it as an option on all other Macs. But try this, Reboot and immediately hold the C key, which force boots from any CD/DVD drive. Also make sure that the external drive you are using is Mac Compliant and will work with one.

• Time Machine using external HDD docking stattion

Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro and a few internal HDD's lying around. I have found on the web some external SATA docking station for mounting internal drives using Firewire 800. I am wondering if Time Machine will recognize these the same as normal external drives and backup accordingly. Thanks.

No reason why that shouldn't work. TM knows when a drive is not available, and it will resume a backup once the drive is connected.

• Installing applications using Zune

Is it possible to install the applications into Lumia 610 using Zune PC software?

That feature was removed from the Zune PC software. If you want to install apps not using the phone, you can use the Windows Phone Marketplace website.
http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/marketplace?wa=wsignin1.0
FYI - This is the U.S. version of the website.
Log in with your Windows Live Account and you can send apps to your phone wirelessly. Pretty cool.
