Installing Arch but keeping another OS's grub menu

I installed Arch with the help of the beginners' guide on a 'spare' partition on my machine, which also have another 4 OSs installed. As I wanted one of the others' grub menu to be the 'active' one I skipped the grub installation part - in fear of messing up the grub menu, and hoping that the update-grub command (from within the 'active' OS) would pick Arch up.
This it didn't and I assume it is because I DIDN'T install grub in Arch (?) but could someone just tell me how I can safely do that but still keeping the other OS's grub as the main one.
At one point in the guide it says to install grub in /dev/sda; would I be safe if I installed it in /dev/sda10 (which is the Arch partition) instead?
Will I have to go through the whole installation process again? Or can I start Arch up (perhaps with the help of the CD?) and 'jump in' and carry on where I left off?

I dual boot Arch and Ubuntu. I did NOT install Grub from Arch Install. After installing Arch, I rebooted Ubuntu and updated GRUB. Then I changed the default OS to Arch from /etc/default/grub.
My rationale behind this was Ubuntu being a 6 monthly release compared to Rolling Arch, I had to install and reinstall ubuntu every 6 months and I didn't want any mishaps with Grub during this.
You probably forgot to update grub in the distro that is handling your Boots. If updating Grub does not show Arch then mount the Arch Partition and then update grub. [However the Grub version in Ubuntu 13.04 has fixed this and I don't have to mount Arch any more].
EDIT: By the way, not installing Grub means that Grub is not installed in the MBR. All the necessary files required to boot arch will be there in the Arch install.

Are you saving the installer first and then installing, or are you running the installer directly from Apple's website? Also save first.
If you're saving first and still having issues, try and use Microsoft's Cleanup Utility and then reinstall Quicktime/iTunes:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Make sure it's a new and fresh download from:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If not mentioned in the articles, make a new user account in Windows and see if iTunes opens. That will tell you if there's something funky in your main account (if the new user works), or if you have a system-wide issue.

  • Version X installed successfully, but keeps crashing.

    Hi,
I have never had any problems with Adobe Reader until now.
I have installed Version X of Adobe Reader on to the home computer (There weren't any problems downloading or installing the program) but each time I have opened the program, it crashes & comes up with the sign: Adobe Reader has stopped working
Then it gives you the options of Check online for a solution & close the program or Close the program
I have tried unstalling & reinstalling the program, I have downloaded the clear the program from the Adobe website, checked my security & computer settings & it all says it works with Adobe Reader.
If anyone has any advice or hints as to what the problem may be, I'd be very grateful.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Please let me know the following details:
    1. The OS you are working on.
    2. The version of Adobe Reader you have tried to install from the website (which I am assuming was http://get.adobe.com/reader).
    3. The Anti Virus software currently installed on your system.
Also, can you please do the following.
    1. Navigate to the Reader installation folder (By Default its C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\plug-ins)
    2. Delete the entire contents of the folder.
    3. Try and repair the installation from the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (OR Programs and Features)

If you mean using recovery cd's in a virtual machine? It wont work that way since the they check for a BIOS  identifier during the first boot.

  • Installed mavericks, but keep getting this message.

On the App Store under purchases os mavericks says "download" instead of "installed"  when I click it nothing happens. Instead I get this message

  • I'm trying to re instal iTunes but keep gettin error messages

    error r6034
and "apple mobile devise failed to start."

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

  • I am the administrator for my computer, however I have tried several times to install itunes but keep getting an error message.

Apple gives an error signal saying that I need to be an adminstrator to make changes to all the users...there is only one adminstrator account and one guest account.

It reads that I don't have enough adminstrative privileges for every account to download the program
I'd like to have a closer look at that error message please.
Generate the error message again. While the error message box is open, hold down the Alt key and hit the PrtSc key. Paste the screenshot into an image file (using a program like Paint), and save the file.
Start a reply here and click the wee camera icon at the top of the reply window. Click "Choose file", browse to the image file, select the file and click "Open". Now click "Insert file" to insert the screenshot into the reply.
