Installing Arch form AMLUG live-cd

I try to install arch from amlug live cd (to have KDE installed directely, because i don't have a DSL connection), but it always fail when i choose the swap partition.
If i ignore this error, abnd continue installation, the system doesn't boot Sad
Does someone alreayd install arch by this method, or have this trouble ?

Ok rasat,that's work
But now i have another question: when installed, i only have a swap and a / partition, Is it possible to have more partitions ?

That will work for a liveCD too. I've done it a few times.

  • Can't install arch in vmware fusion , /dev/tty7 error

I have the latest vmware fusion ,I downloaded the i686 core iso image.
I use vmware fusion (the latest)  i select the default options , when I get to setup if i select "auto prepare harddrive" it fails and tells me to see /dev/tty7 which I can't .
So i manually partition, and then when I select files to install I get the error "cannot start pacman see /dev/tty7"
So i thought maybe the disc image was bad, Ive downloaded the iso from different sites/sources with the same problem. It would seem vmware should be the easiest to install to.
I read the wiki but I don't understand, I have no other issues installing other linux distros in vmware fusion.

Ok got past the auto partition error issue, instead of selecting the first option to install arch from the live disc, select the 2nd option for IDE with no sata drivers in vmware fusion. I think it takes care of both problems

  • Running Arch from a live USB with persistence, on an intel Atom tablet

    Hello,
I may have bitten off more than I can chew here. I am not a noob to linux, but I am a noob to Arch. I have found a few resources around but none of them quite match with what I want to do, and as such I don't want to overcomplicate what I'm doing by following instructions geared towards other objectives (such as performing a full install on a tablet).
The title I think captures it, but I will just state again what it is I want to do in a little bit more detail. I have a 2-in-1 tablet (an acer switch 10, if anybody cares) with an intel Atom processor which runs windows 8.1. I don't want to install Arch linux to the tablet, but rather have a USB with persistence that I can just plug in when I want to boot into Arch rather than windows. I've done this with several linux distros on my standard laptop, but never with Arch and never to run on a tablet. Unfortunately, I think this is made harder than it needs to be by the fact that I don't have a functioning normal laptop at the moment - if I did I would simply do all of this on there, from a linux distro. But as it happens, I only have this tablet, and it is only running windows.
I created the live USB using the software Rufus, and it boots correctly on my friend's laptop, however I have been having trouble getting it to boot from my tablet. There seem to be several things in the way of this, and I am slowly making my way through them. Firstly, I have disabled secure boot, and placed a UEFI 32-bit bootloader into the appropriate folder on the USB drive. So far this has only allowed me to avoid the automatic boot into windows that I don't experience on a normal laptop, instead taking me to the bootloader, but I don't yet know what to do from there.
So, this probably isn't entirely relevant or specific to Arch, but since I am using Arch I thought I would post this here (since more Arch specific stuff might come up as I get further). If anybody has any insight to help me out, that would be great. Otherwise, I will just continue and post any progress I have made here, and maybe this will help the 5 other people in the world who are trying to install Arch to a live USB, from windows, using only an atom-CPU tablet .

SUCCESS! Just loaded up flash media encoder and connected to
one of my flash streaming servers. The little 9" laptop handled it
beautifully. This is on the battery, wireless internet. I did
notice one thing though, I set the FPS to 30, and the highest it
would go was 15-16. Not sure if its throttling the fps because of
battery power, the ~36mbps wireless connection or what, but I'm
happy with the results! I'll try again on the battery and plugged
into the gigabit eithernet we have here at the office and report
the results. Check out the images.
The specs of the laptop are:

    Windows XP Pro SP3
    Intel® Atom Processor® N270 (1.6GHz/533Mhz FSB/512K

  • Help installing Arch BAse to bootable USB flash

    Hi,
I have installed a slimmed ArchLinux base to a USB mass storage gadget (ballpoint pen with 256 Mb) and manged to boot into it by using a simple initial ram-disc to setup the USB drivers and then pivot_root/chroot into the Arch root partition.
This has given me a partially functional Arch base system with an ADSL connection and pacman working, but also with limitations some of whom are as follows:
    * The /dev directory does not have the initctrl pipe and the usual links to devices (hda1, hda2 or sda1, sda2 etc), only the directories with the device nodes (discs/disc0/part1 etc).
    * User interrupt (CTRL-C) doesn't work.
    * CTRL-F2 etc don't open new consoles.
    * Reboot and I think halt also don't work since init cannot run.
    * The /etc/rc.sysinit and rc.mutli scripts seems to run successfully.
Since in my fumbling ways I got thus far, I thought I should ask for help hoping to end up with a normally functioning install so I can operate successfully from my Ballpoint ArchLinux!
    My thanks in advance!

  • How to install arch 2009.08 from hard drive? Please enlighten me

OK, I admit I am impatient for the installation from the CD drive. Whenever possible and whatever distro I wanna try, I head first to try to install it from the hard drive. I don't remember how many times and how many distros I have done the same to, ubuntu, zenwalk, sidux, fedora, opensuse and of course arch. It rarely failed as long as I followed someone's guide, sth like "install any OS from hard drive", I do not exactly remember. And I did the same in the past with arch. But after 2009.08, it simply didn't work. I've read the article "fast install arch from existing linux system" in the wiki, it didn't work either (by the way, if someone can solve my problem, I think the article should be updated). After it boots, at some stage, it says "Use Hook [archiso]", then tell me "waiting for /dev/archiso for 30 seconds ..." then when the time due, it throws me into a ramfs shell. I've hacked for a long time, but no luck. Then I went back to download the 2009.02 iso, however, it works flawlessly.
I did find some differences in the menu.lst/isolinux.cfg between two version.
    In 2009.02, we have
title Boot Arch Linux Live CD
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 lang=en locale=en_US.UTF-8 usbdelay=5 ramdisk_size=75%
    initrd /boot/archiso_pata.img
    While in 2009.08, it is
title Boot Arch Linux Live CD
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 lang=en locale=en_US.UTF-8 archisolabel=ARCHISO_AHCOHH6O ramdisk_size=75%
    initrd /boot/archiso_pata.img
I know I can install arch from usb, but I simply wanna know what's wrong here, so guys, if you have any idea, don't hesitate to enlighten me.

Hi, vacant, thanks for the reply. I did not notice you are the author of the article. Actually I missed the head of the article which directs me to another (the amalgamated one you mentioned). I take a look at it, it seems to make things complicated. I still miss the old days: you simply download the iso, mount it and copy all the contents into a separate partition, edit your current grub, then reboot and everything works. I don't understand how Arch could be so evolved to exclude this simple installation scheme. I am not complaining the development of Arch. In my opinion, a distro as flexible as Arch should provide as much installation strategy as possible. In this respect, I think we can learn from Ubuntu or sidux (in sidux, it provides a very convenient kernel parameter called "fromiso" which allows you to install sidux from the plain iso, that means, you even don't have to mount it and copy the contents out of it to a separate partition).

  • Recovering earlier installed Windows 7 after installing Arch Linux

I'm trying to boot windows on my ASUS notebook.
There was windows 7 from the very beginning (disks C:\ and D:\), then I divided disk D:\ on several partitions and installed Arch Linux. I overwrited Windows boot information by boot part of Linux. Now I want to recover windows, that I still have on hard drive. It doesn's matter what there will be: dualboot or only windows (but dualboot is prefered).

Maybe I missed something, but i don't know what exactly.

Now I know that I don't need MBR at all (but google told me that recovering windows = recovering MBR..)
Are there any ways to recover boot information on EFI system partition from Linux without using Windows Live CD and it's bootrec.exe?
I have bootmgr and bootmgfw.efi files on /dev/sda3 (partition with windows installed), what else I need? Simple copy of bootmgfw.efi to /boot/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi and addition of custom menu item to /etc/grub.d/40_custom does'nt work. There is Windows now in rEFInd and GRUB menus, but there is error on loading.

  • Arch Linux based live gaming distro 'lg-live 0.9.5' released

    Hey all,
first of all, sorry if this is the wrong subforum to post this in but this one seemed most appropriate.
I would like to announce the release of live.linuX-gamers 0.9.5, an Arch Linux based live gaming distro. It was made using Archiso and of course a big investment of time. It is going to be officially released on LinuxTag 2009 in Berlin (in three days) but I thought I'd give it to you guys now.
It is a very specialized distro: It contains lots of popular games, installs proprietary graphics card drivers out-of-the-box and provides you with a nice, clean interface for launching games and a few basic applications.
I don't want to over-advertise this so I'll just say: Please go ahead and test it if you feel like it, maybe mirror it or seed the torrents a bit, post feedback or thoughts, insult me or threaten me, etc.
If you want to give it a spin or see which games are on it, go over to http://live.linux-gamers.net and grab yourself an ISO/USB image.
Thank you, Arch Linux, for making this possible.

    karol wrote:

This thread is rather old, but yeah, it's possible to remaster this "meta-distro" and add/remove games you like: http://github.com/svenstaro/lglive
    BTW, there's a new release http://live.linux-gamers.net/
Ohh what a positive surprise to have a girl here,
yea, i downloaded the DVD this week. I'm no gamer, I gamed in the 90ies on a Amiga 500 last time. But sometimes I get a wich to play a bit, so I found this DVD (I don't want to instal games to my production-distro and don't want to instal Catalyst either for my card)
I want to play 3d first-person games but those ego-shooters i don't enjoy. Its running around shooting on everything and diying a hundred times. I want something more realistic, so I found penumbra and amnesia and would like to install it with this DVD. (if anyone has tips for realistic 3d-games, action-adventures, etc. I would apreciate tips)
I will have a look at your link, thanks a lot

  • Grub error after install Arch x86_64

i install arch on my second laptop and everything works fine so im install on my main laptop but grub can boot
my main laptop have 2 HDD, first i have windows seven and other partions on second i have arch64
at install no errors are show but when i reboot grub menu show the arch options i choose and
    Booting command-list
    root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdb1 ro
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition
    Press any key to continue...
the hd1,0 thing is correct is the second HDD, first partition
i only can boot by arch live cd choose boot  existing OS edit to hd1,0 and show me the grub menu and all boot option work
so what the problem with that
is not the problem with windows because i dont put windows on grub if i wont boot windows i choose boot first HDD on bios
the previous distro in this machine was sidux and only works on install i just choose install grub on sdb on MBR
on arch i choose install grub on /dev/sdb i think this is the MBR correct?

this i find on archwiki, i have this on grub too, but the problem is the grub/bios wrong names but is 100% now.
on 1 HD is a peace of cake install arch on 2 HDD im install a few times because this error but is easy too, when i read on web arch is hard to install i think that will be a pain in the as* but not really is easy and fast even faster than sidux but on start up have more 100mb of ram than sidux but is not a problem because is faster lol
    thanks

Not if you install them all at once in one command. Also works if you install them in the correct order, but just dumping all the packages in the command line fixes it because pacman reads all the package first, check depencies afterward. That way, it will see you install 100 packages, all depencies met -> no problem.
Awebb wrote:And, err, if what you want to say can be said in one line, why all the text?
    Because the longer text:
Explains why Arch can't have big disk images with all packages preinstalled on it
Explains why having the packages isn't that useful in most cases (example of the 1.2Gb update)
Offers multiple ways to store the packages:
Put extra packages on another media or network share
Expand the original CD image and put them directly on the Live CD
Tells where to go for the currently downloaded packages for easy access
Plus, finally, offers an alternative way to install the system: pre-build it in a VM or chroot and just untar on the target machine(s)
The one-line version doesn't talk about all that and suggest the direct way to do it quickly, but it acts more like a summary. Next time learn to read before complaining, thanks.

  • Installing arch to macbook 2,1

    Hi,
I'm trying to install arch (dual boot with OSX) on my macbook 2,1.  I've install rEFIt.
The partitions that I have setup are
    1 OSX boot partition
    2. OSX system partition
    3. Archlinux
    4. Home
I've arrive at the stage where I need to install the bootloader.  But the installer doesn't give the option of installing grub to the Archlinux paritions.  So I exit the installer and manually install grub using grub-install /dev/sda3 (which is where my arch partition is).
I still can't boot into arch.  There are 2 entries now in my rEFIt menu (OSX and "Boot Legacy OS")  How do I setup grub to boot into arch?

So, is rEFIT able to boot GRUB but GRUB is not able to find Arch? Or is rEFIT not able to find GRUB?
For what it's worth, I recently installed Arch on my Macbook 5,1. I also used rEFIT (installed using OS X). My drive partitioning was
    /dev/sda1: EFI/OS X boot partition
    /dev/sda2: OS X
    /dev/sda3: Linux Swap
    /dev/sda4: Arch
As you mentioned, the new Arch installer doesn't give you the option of selecting primary partitions to install GRUB (the old installer did). So, when I reached the last stage of the installer (installation of the bootloader), I exited the installer, launched GRUB in interactive mode, and installed GRUB to my 4th partition (where /boot is). (It sounds like you did something similar.) When I rebooted rEFIT discovered that my 4th partition was bootable and displayed a Tux logo. Clicking on the Tux logo launched grub. From there I am able to launch Arch.
    Some thoughts:
    1. Did you make sure your partition tables are synced? I didn't need to do this, but I've heard of other needing to do this.
    2. Did you make sure that the grub was configured properly; e.g. you've specified the correct path to the kernel, etc.
    3. Did you try prayer and/or other forms of divinity?

  • Installing Arch on a MacBook

    Hello everyone!
I want to install Arch on a MacBook 2.1 but the keyboard is not working when I boot from the CD. It works perfectly fine on other computers. How can I install Arch anyhow?

I have never tried Arch on Apple hardware.  Have you keyboard before the boot?
    Might this be your problem?
If you use a different live distro that works, one can install Arch from another working Linux system. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ting_Linux

  • Installing Arch on a previous RAID0 with XP

I'm about to install Arch on RAID0 that also has windows XP.  I'm going to use the archwiki on raid/lvm as a guide, but given that I already have Xp on this raid0, is there anything I should look out for?  For example, I'm mainly concerned about configuring grub correctly so that I can still access XP if I need to, however it's not too much of a problem if I somehow nuke it since I already have a full working arch install on another box.
    Thanks in advance

I presume this is one of those pesky motherboard-chipset-based RAID setups? If so, look into dmraid. If it's 'real' hardware RAID - ie a dedicated card with its own processor and stuff - then you shouldn't have any problem, Linux will only see the RAID, not the separate disks. If it is the former, then it will see the disks separately though.

  • Connecting through RADIUS to install arch??

    hi everyone!
i have one problem. i want to install arch linux, but since i live in student home, the network is supervised and controlled with kerio control firewall/AAA. each time i want to access internet i need to enter the username and password before i can access to the first page, and the session itself ends automatically if there's no traffic for some period of time, i guess 15 or 30 minutes. is there a way to enter these credentials while in bash? if not, could i somehow share the internet via usb cable from my ipad so i can login there?

will try that, thank you oh well.. i can't complain about anything except the local network and internet service of the facility, which is really badly designed

  • Installing/upgrading packages on live cd - broken?

I've been trying to install perl in the live cd environment, as it is a dependency for many other things such as git and emacs, but this has led me down a rabbit hole of problems which I'm guessing stem from the recent dropping of aufs from the kernel.
Reproducing my problem is easy. Simply boot into the latest live cd, and type:
    [root@archiso]$ dhcpcd eth0
    [root@archiso]$ pacman -Syu
You will get errors about conflicts with aufs2, kernel26, ndiswrapper and tiacx depending on kernel26<2.6.39. To me the reasonable way around this would be:
    [root@archiso]$ pacman -Syu --ignore kernel26
This will appear to work but the entire system will crash during the "checking for file conflicts" stage, such that a hard reboot is necessary.
Trying to bypass this problem and simply type
    [root@archiso]$ pacman -Sy perl
will not work either - it will crash exactly the same way.
Any ideas or suggestions you all have are appreciated.
NOTE: I did check the feedback form but it seems to focus on AIF issues...

Getting perl from the core CD did work, but it proved to be redundant since the latest git package depends on >=5.14.0. I solved my problem by wgetting both git-1.7.5.2-1 and perl-5.12.3-1 from the schlunix repo, which can work on all live cds (i'm writing a script that will do this and other things). Installing those resolved all dependency problems for my purposes.
This of course does not solve either the long term dependency breakage from dropping aufs or whatever pacman bug caused the hard-crash, but at least solves my immediate problem.
    Thanks for your help karol!
