Installing Arch in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1

Firstly, I'm very new to linux and am looking to try out as many distros as possible before deciding on which one to learn from.  I want a simple but powerful distro which has minimal packages which will allow me to develop a system myself, learning how the OS works along the way.  Arch linux looks like the one.
I've tried to install from the ftp iso "archlinux-2009.02-ftp-i686" onto Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1 on my Pentium 4 3.4GHz PC.  I get a "Kernal panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill the idle task! message" after a message "unknown_bootoption+0x0/0x1db", a hex dump and "EIP: [<c010982c>] text_poke_early+0x4c/0x70 SS:ESP 0068:c042fe90" message.
Don't know whether this means anything or I've missed something obvious.  Does anyone have an experience of this type of install?  Have I downloaded the wrong ISO?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Arch does seem to have a few issues when running in a VM. More so than when using actual metal.
That should be the correct CD.
I never had much luck with MS Virtual PC. Maybe try VirtualBOX from Sun?
I don't know if your pentium 4 has support for hardware virtualisation. Without hardware support the performance will be less than impressive and I found I had more issues without hardware virtualisation when running vms.

  • Microsoft Virtual PC 2007

    Hello, I was wondering if I install a clean version of Windows XP using bootcamp, will I be able to install Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 on it? I've been reading that this cannot work on the Intel chip. Please let me know as I am interested in purchasing the MacBook, but I also need to do DEV on the machine, thus I need to us MC VPC 2007.
    Thanks.

    welcome to macbook forum.
    it should work just fine since boot camp with XP or vista, will act as a PC laptop.
    But the problem might be when you have to select the partition for installing your other guest OS, unless you point that guess OS (win 2000, another XP or else) to external HD if virtual PC support guess os from external connection.
    Good Luck.

  • Install arch on a virtual machine

    I am following a tutorial to install arch linux on my virtual box, oracle.
    when it comes to the command mkinitcpio, it gives me an error, command not found.
    #arch-chroot /mnt
    #mkinitcpio -p linux
    sh: mkinitcpio: command not found
    I added /sbin to my path, but that had no effect.
    could anyone guide me please.

    saman_artorious wrote:Yes, it is the UUID, but I don't know how to check it.
    I think this is the way to do that-
    To list basic information about the partitions, run:
    $ lsblk -f
    or, if you like a gui, I'm partial to "gparted" where you right click on a partition and then click 'information'
    Somewhat off topic, but are there preconfigured appliances for download that are recommended?  It would be nice to not have to go through the whole instillation routine.
    I found this one, and it seems to be one of the few out there from the systemd era:
    Archlinux-2013.08.01.ova.torrent
    For the OP, you may consider working backwords. Load up a preinstalled appliance, and remove packages you don't want.
    Just thinking out loud.

  • Installing EBS R12 in virtual pc 2007

    Hi hussein,
    I have a laptop with 4Gb Ram and win7 OS.
    I installed virtual pc 2007 on it. I planned to install EBS R12 on linux rhel 4.6 so...
    I tried installing Linux RHEL 4.6 using the ordinary CD installer, but when I finished the login screen resolution
    is not correct, I see big colored bars and the text are so big. How do you resolve this?
    I my installer not compatible with virtual pc 2007? is there different linux version made for the virtual pc?
    Can you help me find docs on those who have successfully installed EBS on virtual pc?
    Is ubuntu linux also supported by EBS R12? I see some sample install but Im not sure if this is ordinary/normal
    ubuntu or it is made special for virtual pc only like the "XP Mode" installer which not really the normel XP cd
    i guess.
    Thanks a lot

    Hi,
    I tried installing Linux RHEL 4.6 using the ordinary CD installer, but when I finished the login screen resolution
    is not correct, I see big colored bars and the text are so big. How do you resolve this?Is this at the end of the installation or when accessing the application? Sometimes, Rapid Install failed to complete the post check and you will have to start the application services manually and click on the retry button to finish the installation.
    I my installer not compatible with virtual pc 2007? is there different linux version made for the virtual pc?It should be OK to use this software. However, I would recommend you go with a software which was test before (I did manage to install Oracle Apps 11i/R12 on RHEL/OEL 4 and 5 running on VMWare with no issues).
    Can you help me find docs on those who have successfully installed EBS on virtual pc?I am not aware of any link/document that covers Oracle Apps 11i/R12 installation on Virtual PC, so you may google it and see if any installation steps have been tried before).

    i guess.It is not supported. I have also seen couple of documents covering the installation steps on this OS, but I am not going to say it would work.
    I would suggest you go with a certified Linux OS on VMware, and see if it works. Or, mention more details about your previous installation so we may try to fix it.

  • Can Solaris be installed in Virtual PC 2007?

    Hello
    Can Solaris 10 be installed within Virtual PC 2007?
    The reason I want to use Virtual PC instead of something like VMware or VirtualBox, is because of it's [BCD capabilities|http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=129475].
    Please tell me if it is possible to install Solaris within the Virtual PC 2007 virtual machine.
    Thanks in advance,
    Panarchy

    OpenSolaris is an open source project and the community can definitely take on something like this. OpenSolaris 2008.11 is tested for the following VM,
    Xvm (Xen), VirtualBox, VMware and informally Parallels under OS X. I would encourage you to first verify if this is an issue for OpenSolaris 2008.11 and if so start the discussions on [email protected] LiveCD iso is under 700MB so it does not take too long to download.

  • BPA shows domain prepped for Exchange 2007 SP1 after SP3 install

    Hello,
    I have a Client with a domain that is at 2003 domain functional level and 2000 forest level.
    The client had Exchange 2007 SP1 and I have just upgraded it to SP3. There is one CAS, one Hub Transport, and one Mailbox Server (All three had Exchange 2007 SP1).
    The domain and forest were prepped earlier by someone else and when I ran the installation program, it didn't pop up any errors on any of the servers.
    The upgrade to SP3 is in preperation to Exchange 2010. Everything is working ok. I have checked:
    1) In ADSIEdit, Exchange System Objects properties: Object Version =11221.
    2) In ADSIEdit, Services>Microsoft Exchange>Organization: Object Version =11222
    3) In ADSIEdit, RangeUpper value of ms-Exch-Schema-Version-Pt object = 14625
    However, When I run the Exchange BPA, it reports that the domain is prepped for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (In informational items). This is an informational item and not a warning or alert. However, I am concerned. Is this normal, and will it affect
    the migration to Exchange 2010?
    Thanks,
    HA

    Hello Ha20,
    Based on my experience, it will not affect the migration. However, it’s recommended to prepare the schema again to avoid any potential issues.

  • [SOLVED] FTP install (in MS Virtual PC 2007)

    Hi all,
    I'm new to Archlinux, coming from Debian and Ubuntu distros.
    I'm attempting to install Archlinux in an MS Virtual PC 2007 VM at my work. Everything seems to have gone fine so far until I get to select my packages. It says on any server I choose, "Error fetching package list from server". The first step "Configure Network" seemed to go fine, using DHCP. I moved to another console (Alt-F4) and checked my rc.conf settings. Under "Networking" I have:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo !eth0)
    When I try the command ifconfig it shows all my networking info, which looks fine to me. When I ping google.com it returns, "ping: unknown host google.com" which would mean my network isn't working. I tried restarting the networking daemon with "/etc/rc.d/network restart" and it didn't help.
    I wonder if it's because it's in a VM? Or should I not do the FTP install? Or is there something missing in my rc.conf?
    Thanks.

    Hmm, I'm not sure about DNS.
    I can ping the rounter fine.
    I setup a "static ip" entry in rc.conf. So my config looks like:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="eth0 192.168.1.116 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    I made sure 192.168.1.116 wasn't already being used by pinging it on my host computer.
    Restarting the network daemon and pinging google.com still results with packet loss. I wonder if it's something to do with my works network configuration. I'll try this again when I get home.

  • Install Arch from 2007.05 "base" iso or the "current" iso?

    My old Arch install (0.7.2, upgraded in Nov. 06) may be broken, and I'm thinking of doing a fresh install of 2007.05.  For the old install, I'd followed the recommended procedure of installing just the base system from the CD iso image, then installed the xorg and kde metapackages via pacman and then built the system from there.
    At present, Arch offers a 2007.05-Duke.current iso of 550 MB that includes Xorg plus other things (but not KDE), on top of the base package.  What exactly is the virtue of this bigger iso over the base package iso (150 MB).  Why are the devs offering this bigger "current" iso, and is this the preferred way of installing Arch now?

    You could also take it one step further, and use the ftp iso (a mere 27MB for i686, 35MB for x86_64) - that basically provides the installer only, and downloads everything else from the repos. Of course, as with slackhack's "base + upgrade" suggestion, a decent net connection is essential for  an ftp install.

  • Unable to install ACS on Microsoft windows 2003 Virtual Server

    Hi,
    I am trying to install Cisco Secure ACS on Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition which is hosted on a Microsoft Virtual Server, but the installation doesnt go beyond the enclosed screenshot.
    Please let me know whether ACS can be installed on a Virtual Server or not.
    thank you
    Regards
    Salim

    We have ACS 4.0 installed in our lab systems on VM. Which VM are you running? ACS has been tested on and is only supported on VMware ESX 3.0 and later. Also, you need to have adequate resources allocated to the ACS/Windows VM instance.

  • Archlinux on Microsoft Virtual Server - installs but doesn't boot

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to sneak Arch into our organization, but as we're very Windows-focussed it may take some time. I thought I would be able to install it as a virtual machine on our Virtual Server, but I haven't had any luck.
    The system seemed to install fine, but when I restart the machine and take out the virtual CD it just sits there with a blank screen, but using 97% CPU.
    Here's how I installed the system:
    Physical machine: Core II Duo 2GHz running Windows Vista 32-bit, with 2GB memory and a 120GB IDE drive.
    1) Setup a virtual machine - it has 256MB memory, and a 100GB dynamically-expanding IDE virtual hard disk.
    2) Attached the Don't Panic 2007.08 BASE ISO to the Virtual Machine, and started her up.
    3) Started the installer with arch ide-legacy. This is because I've run through this install a few times now and without this option it complains that it can't read from /dev/null a lot and that it has trouble writing to VHD.
    4) Did an auto-prepare and selected all of the defaults to partition the virtual hard disk.
    5) Selected all of the base packages and installed them.
    6) Did the "configure system", and left everything as the defaults except setting the root password.
    7) Installed the kernel, again leaving the defaults in the config file.
    8) Installed the bootloader. Last time I used GRUB, but it sat there saying it was installing for over 2 hours. This time I tried LILO and it installed in less than a few seconds.
    After all that was done I exited the installer and did a reboot. Now it sits at 97% CPU usage constantly and shows nothing but a blank screen. Using ALT+F1-F5 shows nothing.
    Microsoft Virtual Server has support for the Red Hat and other distributions so I would have expected ArchLinux to work. Has anyone else had success in getting Arch to run on Virtual Server? And is there anything I did wrong in my installation?
    Cheers,
    Paul

    Well, according to this virtual pc 2004 supports archlinux 0.7.1 and 0.7.2 .
    They claim virtual server 2005 uses the same core as virtual pc 2004 , so it should work.
    Try installing with one of the previous isos, see ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/iso .

  • OEL5 on Virtual PC 2007 - dislpay problems

    Hi,
    I have a Windows Vista PC with Virtual PC 2007 and installed Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 on a VM to use as Oracle 10g lab.
    The installation completed fine, but I cannot use GUI(Gnome) because when I issue X command, the screen turns black and I cannot do anything more.
    Any guesses? I´ve read that I should change color scheme to 16 bit and/or change video memory configuration , but I do not know how to do it and if it would solve the problem.
    Thanks in advance.

  • SCSM 2012 R2 Self Service Portal is supported on Microsoft Sharepoint Foundation 2013 Sp1 or not

    Hello,
    I have a requirement to install Self Service Portal on one dedicated Server and found that Both the Web Content Server and SharePoint Web Parts can be installed on single Server. I want to use Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 Foundation Server as
    it is free but it is not supported on Windows Server 2012 R2.
    My query are -
    Can we use Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2013 Sp1 for the same purpose.
    Can we install Both the Web Content Server and SharePoint Web Parts on One Computer for Self Service portal
    I was referring the below link which says that Sharepoint 2013 is not supported, does it mean for Sharepoint foundation 2013 Sp1 is also not supported.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=24983
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Ankur

    for background, there are actually three parts here. there is a SharePoint team site, there is the content distribution website, and there is the data access website. the data access and the content website are almost always collocated on the same servers,
    since they are both IIS virtual directories. the sharepoint team site is packaged for 2010, but it's been
    successfully installed on 2013 without problems.
    you have a couple of options:
    you can put all three web componets on the same server by using foundation 2010
    you can put all three on the same 2013 server using the method above
    you can put the two iisvds on a server and install the team site using the method above
    you can install the content and data access services on a separate server, and then install a scrap foundation SharePoint and export out the team site and import it into your existing SharePoint site

    Prepare the domains as required. You have to prep the forest first for SP3 before upgrading Exchange itself
