Installing Arch on a previous RAID0 with XP

I'm about to install Arch on RAID0 that also has windows XP. I'm going to use the archwiki on raid/lvm as a guide, but given that I already have Xp on this raid0, is there anything I should look out for? For example, I'm mainly concerned about configuring grub correctly so that I can still access XP if I need to, however it's not too much of a problem if I somehow nuke it since I already have a full working arch install on another box.

I presume this is one of those pesky motherboard-chipset-based RAID setups? If so, look into dmraid. If it's 'real' hardware RAID - ie a dedicated card with its own processor and stuff - then you shouldn't have any problem, Linux will only see the RAID, not the separate disks. If it is the former, then it will see the disks separately though.

My netbook has a broadcom BCM4313 chipset. Kernel module: brcmsmac. The latest arch installer can't properly configure my network and I don't have a wired connection at this location. The system keeps spamming messages like this on the terminal every few seconds:

Cannot install Arch on raid0 (kernel panics)

I followed the Howto in the wiki to install Arch on a Raid 0 array, but when trying to boot I keep getting errors that boil down to "no filesystem could mount root" followed by a kernel panic.
I modified the howto to my needs:
- created a Raid 0 array using mdadm from logical partitions /dev/sda7 and /dev/sdb7. /dev/sda6 will be /boot and /dev/sdb6 will be swap (both not in raid, of course)
- Put filesystems in place (tried Reiserfs and ext3 for the array; ext2 for /boot seems to be fine as the boot does initialize)
- mounting of array to /mnt
- Edit configfiles. Mkinitcpio is the important one, I feel:

I also tried adding reisferfs to 'modules' and using rootfstype=reiserfs as a kernel parameters.

How to install Arch for dual-boot with Win 7 (on 2 hard drives)?

Hello,
the TLDR first: how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for 2 hard drives to dual-boot Arch (64 bit)and Win 7 (64 bit)?
Long version: So, I have the following hard drive & partition layout:
On my first hard drive (250 GB big) I have: Win 7 64 bit, all the programs for Windows and of course the EFI partition
My second hard drive is 1 TB big and formatted in NTFS and it only contains data. It has 2 partitions, one is about 750 GB big and used for simple storage.
Sidenote 1: sometimes my disk management (Windows' own gparted) shows either the little disk or the big one as disk 0. Don't know what exactly this means, but I have never ever experienced any problems whatsoever during use.
Sidenote 2: the UEFI motherboard (ASRock H67M) cannot boot into Legacy mode.
I want to install Arch on a ~200 GB partition on the second hard drive (the one with 1 TB). (click here if you want to see a screenshot) I am posting this because I am confused with how exactly I should deal with the whole "2 hdds & UEFI" thing.
So how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for this setup?
For partitioning I suppose I would have to use fdisk or cgdisk. I used cgdisk before and found it to be straightforward. Then, because I have experienced my fair share of problems with rEFInd, I'd like to use GRUB.

This will probably help you out in understanding the sidenote 1 thingie (hdd's on sata3 and/or sata2 connectors)
As on sidenote 2, according to the manual it seems to be possible to boot legacy mode, see Storage Configuration.

You are welcome. I'm glad you got it back up.
(1) You say you did the symbolic link. I will assume this is set correctly; it's very important that it is.
(2) I don't know what you mean by "Been feeding the [email protected] for several weeks now, 700 emails each day at least." After the initial training period, SpamAssassin doesn't learn from mail it has already processed correctly. At this point, you only need to teach SpamAssassin when it is wrong. [email protected] should only be getting spam that is being passed as clean. Likewise, [email protected] should only be getting legitimate mail that is being flagged as junk. You are redirecting mail to both [email protected] and [email protected] ... right? SpamAssassin needs both.
(3) Next, as I said before, you need to implement those "Frontline spam defense for Mac OS X Server." Once you have that done and issue "postfix reload" you can look at your SMTP log in Server Admin and watch as Postfix blocks one piece of junk mail after another. It's kind of cool.
(4) Add some SARE rules:

Installing Arch with UNetbootin, error

I'm trying to install Arch on my HP dv1040 laptop with UNetBootin and haven't been able to do much. When I boot up and select UNetbootin, linux starts running and decompressing and stuff but then it says "Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso" and fails to find it. I'm kinda lost for what to do. I've tried reinstalling UNetbootin like 5 times with different options such as using my iso image, or letting UNet download it for me. Can anyone help me?
I have WinXP as my current OS.

sudo dd bs=8M if=archlinux-2009.08-netinstall-i686.img of=/dev/sdc
Works only for the netinstall images though. I'll get an error during install with core, but this might also be because my usb stick is fubar.

You should try to use the netinstall images with UNetBootin. I had no luck with the core ones and unetbootin though.
Another solution should be to boot from an ubuntu livecd/usb-stick (works with unetbootin, I already tried it) and then dd the image on the usb stick as the wiki says: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … tion_Media

Problems with installing Arch on encrypted drive

Hello again!
I am now trying to install Arch Linux on my AA1L machine, with encrypted root partition. I have /dev/sda1 which is the unencrypted boot and /dev/sda2 which is the encrypted / partition. I followed the ArchWiki article which explained me to have 'encrypt' in the HOOKS variable of /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. However when I boot, GRUB gives me "/dev/mapper/root not found". Any ideas what did I miss?

you should not "just have" the hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. It should be at the correct location (eg just before "filesystems")
Don't forget to rebuild your initcpio with mkinitcpio if you change settings in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.

Trying to install Arch with Ubuntu hardy already installed

I have Ubuntu already installed on my system and I want to install Arch on a separate 10gig partition ( which is already made) but when I boot from the Arch cd and go to install Arch only sees the main drive it doesn't see anything else what am I doing wrong. I only want to install arch on the 10 gig partition for now until I am more familiar with Linux

I have just read that it is informative but I am not sure of what that will do inorder for me to be able to install Arch on My tem gig partition, when I am in ubuntu I stat gparted to see what the names of my partitions are and this is what it shows /dev/sda3 swap 1gig /dev/ sda2 reiserfs 10 gigs ( where I want to install Arch) sda1 / Ubuntu how do I install arch onto dev/sda 2 ) the ten gig partition) if arch doesn't see it? do I have to delete the partition or formaste the 10 gig partition differently? I am pretty new to Linux so I am not sure of how to do this.

Dual booting with other linux distros
This is done exactly the same way that Arch linux is loaded. Here we assume that the other distro is on partition [s/h]da3.

To avoid maintenance nightmare, you might want to chainload the GRUB in the MBR to another bootloader you might have installed in the bootrecord of a partition [(hd0,2) in our example] instead of the MBR. This way the auto-magic stuff of some distro will manage the menu.lst on (hd0,2) (if it is grub) for its own distro and you will boot with all the option needed (like the correct last kernel) without the need to copy/paste some part of that menu.lst into yours.
In our example [1], GRUB is in the MBR and some other bootloader (BL) (be it grub or lilo) is in the Boot Record of (hd0,2).

Installing Arch with USB

My laptop currently does not have a disk drive and I want to install Arch Linux as a dual-boot with Ubuntu 12.04. Do I just copy the Arch iso to a thumbdrive and get my computer to boot from the thumbdrive? When I do this a get a "Boot error."

I am having one heck of a time trying to find information on installing Arch on a Silicon Image SiI 0680 raid card. That will work for a liveCD too. I've done it a few times.

Fresh installed arch hanged with Skype in wmii during video call.

Fresh installed arch hanged with Skype in wmi during video call. The keyboard stopped reacting to any keys, including Ctrl+Alt+F1 (F2, F3, F4, F5, F6), Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.
The timer was actually working but updating in 3-5 seconds. While I had powerful laptop (i5 2.6GHz, 8Gb RAM). So,... I had to use power button to restart.
Any ideas how to avoid this in future?
Dis anybody experience similar issue?

Hi, I want to install Archlinux on my thinkpad T60, but there is only WIFI at my room(with WPA), so is it possible to install Arch and set up to get a full GUI desktop environment? The problem is how to connect to internet via WIFI in command line only mode, is it too complicated? Is there a tutorial on this?

'The beginners guide and the install guide in the wiki cover this, i believe it also has a section for connecting to an encrypted access point. So to answer your question: yes its possible and no its not too complicated and yes there is a tutorial on this
