Installing arch on old laptop without internet

i've been playing around with linux for the past month, mostly using mandriva and for a very short time slack and ubuntu. mandriva works well and was definitely a smooth change for a long time windows user. due to a dying harddisk i even learend some of the basics pretty damn fast . now my machine is back up and running with w2k, mandriva and (soon) arch.
i have an old laptop (hp omnibook with a 600 mHz celeron, 10 gb hdd, 128 mb ram, s3 graphics card and no internet connection). it's being used as an OFFLINE INFOSYSTEM (which is a simple but quite extensive webpage) for my clients, running mandrake 10.1 for the past year without problems. the only drawback is the long boot time and the bad font rendering. to speed things up i'd like to try arch.
in short: i need a fast booting system with basically only a webbrowser running my webpage offline. NOTHING ELSE! would you recommend arch for that? remember, i can't update any packages online, because there's no possibility to connect that laptop to the internet.
what do you suggest? what packages do i have to install from the cd to get a small, fast system? obviously the base system and xorg. but then what, and is everything to be found on that cd?

Larch LiveCD construction kit mat give you a way to do what you want.
To use it normally it requires downloading via the internet so you probably would have to use another machine to create the LiveCD with larch.  The parameters loaded would have to fit your laptop and it requires kernel26beyond to be functional.
The details are in USER CONTRIBUTIONS forum if you are inclined to study it.
The download of Larch 0.9.9 or later includes verbose readme files.  It would seem you could build it on another machine and use it on the laptop assuming your laptop is i686 compliant.
Best to you...

How do I install Lightroom on the laptop without buying it again ??

The same way you did the first time. Download the trial version, install it, activate it with the serial number that you have now. The license entitles you to two installations, but for your own personal use.

  • If I own Photoshop Elements 5.0 on an old computer without internet access, how do I open the image

If I have Photoshop Elements 5.0 on an old computer without internet access, how can I open the image I created so I can print it?  The new computer with internet is not the one I have registered the Photoshop product.
    Thanks.
    Eddie

    Hi eddie
If you saved the image on the old computer as a project or a PSD file it will only open in Elements. The best thing to do is make another copy and then transfer it to the flash drive.
If you open the saved collage in the PSE5 Editor you can click the top menu Layer à Flatten Image
Then click File à Save As and choose jpeg.
Copy the jpeg to the flash drive and then plug it into the new computer and drag the jpeg collage to Pictures or another folder.

i lost my laptop, now i can not access my ebook. how can i deactivate my old laptop without accessing it?

Sorry, but officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased items other than iPhone/iPod touch applications and iBooks. It's your responsibility to make backup copies (as iTunes itself advises) in case something goes wrong with your system, as unfortunately it apparently did in your case, and you lose all the information on your hard drive. The official statement of their policy can be found here, among other places.
For apps, look here for instructions on redownloading.  For songs, movies, and videos, if you don't have a backup of your purchased items, either on external media or another computer and don't have them on an iOS device (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad), you're probably out of luck and will need to repurchase your content.
If you have your content on an iOS device, post back and someone here can help you get them restored. Otherwise you can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service (select the "Music Purchases" or "Video Purchases" category, as appropriate, then "Lost or Missing Items". You'll find either an "Express Lane" button - just follow the instructions to get to the contact form - or an "Email Us" button) ") and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis. But don't count on it.

  • Install arch on emachine laptop

    Hello,
Here is my problem. I am trying to install arch on an emachines amd64 laptop. The 0.6 install disc boots a working 2.6 kernel from which I can get networking started. If I then install a 2.6 kernel, it freezes loading the kernel at the point where the dmesg says: "NET" Registered protocol family 2". If I install a 2.4 kernel it will boot fine after adding acpi=off and agp=try_unsupported parms. However, I cannot get networking to work with the 2.4 kernel. The modules will load but I will always timeout during network start. I've run network start using bash -x and I am getting the correct parms to dhcpd. It just doesn't want to work. So my question is this. How do I get a 2.6 kernel to boot? I know it will work because install uses it. Is there a way to use the install kernel? Should I try to build a kernel during install and how do I do this?
    Thanks,
    Jason

Ok, Got the 2.6.3 kernel working. There is an excellent resource here.
The 3 things which helped me were:
1.) Using the config file listed on the page linked above as a basic guide.
2.) Using ext3 as my filesystem.
3.) Adding "pci=noacpi noapic psmouse.proto=imps" to my kernel boot parms.
Also on the page linked above there are links to 2 other resources. "thither's page" and a gentoo forum link. Thither's page is worth checking out and the gentoo forum is a long read but provides some background on the problems.
The link also provides misc patches. I have not tried those yet.
As far as I know the wireless card does not have working drivers yet and the ati card will not run 3d due to lack of drivers. If I find solutions to either I will post here.
p.s. Sorry about the OT in the posts above I am the only person I know who can get OT in a dsicussion with themself.
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Is there anyway to get music from an old laptop without deleting my new music?

Awhile back my old laptop with all my music on it stopped working. Since then I have gotten a new iphone along with new music on a new laptop. I was wondering is there anyway to get my old music back without messing up anyof my new data?

Restore the backup of your old laptop to your new laptop.
Copy the music off the hardd rive of the old laptop to the hard drive
of the new laptop. If the old laptop is no longer working, data on the
hard drive may be salvageable if it is removed from the old laptop
and put into a hard drive enclosure for connecting to the new laptop.
Download from iTunes if the music was originally purchased under the same
AppleID you are using on the new laptop.
Reimport from CDs is that was the original source of the music.

  • Can you run indesign cs4 on a laptop without internet connection

I believe that Indesign CS4 checks over the internet before opening. If that is the case can you run it on a laptop without an internet connection?
    Thanks

From an earlier post by Nicolas Mertens:
"here's what I got from Customer Services about this problem:
[Help] files are located in the following location:
    C:/Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Help/en_us/InDesign/6.0. Also
from that location, you can launch the file 'index.html' and this
should direct you to *the online help that you would access through
    the program itself.*"
I found that the files are not at that location, but at C:/Program
Files/Common Files/Adobe/Help/en_GB/InDesign/6.0 (this is in Windows
    Vista, by the way). "
Yours would presumably be at [the German equivalent of
..]/de-DE/InDesign6.0, or whatever your locale is (AT, CH...)

  • Installing itunes on a computer without internet

Is there a way that someone can put itunes on a computer without downloading it straight from the internet? Can they download it on another computer and save it to a disk or something then set it up on the other computer without internet?

Can they download it on another computer and save it to a disk or something then set it up on the other computer without internet?
Yes you can. when you download, choose Save rather than run. Then copy the installer file (either an iTunesSetup.exe or an iTunes64setup.exe) to your portable media and carry it to the other PC.
The primary issues on iTunes for Windows are making sure you get the 32-bit or the 64-bit installer. Usually the iTunes for Windows download page automatically detects which kind of operating system the downloading-computer has ... but if you're trying to download (say) a 64-bit iTunes64setup.exe installer file on a 32-bit PC, that can be a disadvantage.
Here's a link to a page with a direct download for a 64-bit iTunes64Setup.exe installer file (in case you need to get a 64-bit on a 32-bit PC):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL925
To download a 32-bit on a 64-bit PC go to the standard page and get the option that doesn't mention 64-bit (you'll know you've gotten the 32-bit one if the file is called iTunesSetup.exe).

I have a Windows 7 desktop where the internet is working but internet explorer will not work so I need to install firefox. I have tried downloading it to my external hard drive via my Windows XP laptop but cannot get it to install on my desktop.

i can't seem to be able to do this...was trying to copy it onto a disc, but couldn't. Any ideas? thanks

I just googled itunes 2.0 and found a 2.04 download suitable for 9.0.4 or better OS 9.2 reccomended.

    apple has it too:

Can you dowlnoad it to one computer and then make a disk image/cd to take to the other computer for your mom? Seems less risky than getting it from another computer. I've done that before and it's really time consuming and hit or miss.

  • Before I Install Arch on My Laptop...

I have a couple of questions.  I have a Dell 1420 that I take onto campus for notes in class and something to do between classes.  I've gotten Arch working beautifully on my Desktop with FVWM finally all set.  But I'd like to be sure that everything (at least almost certainly) work before I go to the trouble of resizing the windows partition and setting everything up.  So, here are my questions:
    1) I know this question is kind of ridiculous, but my university has these instructions for XP (https://hdc.tamu.edu/reference/document … ion_id=729) for connecting to the on campus wireless network.  I've had difficulty in the past connecting to those networks with Ubuntu and Fedora because of the need for a username and password.  I've never really known how to configure everything to make things work.  So, will wicd (which I really like) support the correct configuration?  Or will I need to find a new wireless network tool?
    2) I have an Intel 3945 wireless card in the laptop, and the on campus network is WPA2, are both of those pretty well supported?
    3) Is suspend/resume supported pretty well on the laptop?  I've had (unresolved) difficulties with it on my desktop, and it's much more important on the laptop.
    thanks,
    progrock

    1) Check out netcfg (in core) http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Netcfg
    2) The 3945 card works fine here.
    3) http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Suspend_to_Disk shows you a couple options to try (pm-utils takes the least setup). I've had problems getting an ATI video card to work coming back from a suspend to disk on a desktop, but none of the laptops I've tried have problems suspending (I'm just lucky?)

  • Acrobat XI did not finish installing because of old version of Internet Explorer

    Acrobat will not install

    Hi Frank,
What version of Internet explorer do you have?
Moreover IE interfering with Acrobat installation is highly unlikely.
You might want to follow the following basic troubleshooting steps :
    > Enable the hidden Admin Account on Windows 7 ( Ref :  http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-adminis trator-account-on-windows-vista/ )
    > Disable all Non-Microsoft Startup Services. (Ref : http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/disable-startup-items-servic es-windows.html )
    > Disable all the Antivirus softwares like CA, Norton,Mc Afee etc. temporarily from the computer.

  • Is there anyway to uninstall p/shop frrom my old laptop which has been damaged and I cannot retrieve any info and re-install it on my new laptop? thank you

I previously purchased p/shop and had it installed on my old laptop.
It was badly damaged and I cant retrieve anything from it without paying out a fortune to have a company try to access it.
Is there anyway I can get p/shop uninstalled and re-install t on my new laptop?
The old laptop is completely kaput-- doesn't even switch on?
    Thank you

I am sorry its taken me a day or so to respond. ( My niece went into labour on the other side of the country and I have only just gotten back home)
I would just like to say thank you so much to the kind forum members who responded with very helpful solutions.
As a complete idiot when it comes to computers I am so grateful.
I will speak to some friends who are much more computer savvy and will probably be able to put the suggestions into action.
I really appreciate all the assistance as I would really like to retrieve some of the stuff from the old laptop and transfer it to my new one as I have no way to replace
    the "lost" stuff,
    Again Thank you
    Elaine
