Installing ASM+RAC on two Sun Netra440

Hi, folks, My company develops a telecom system and considering to install RAC and ASM on two Sun Netra 440, each Netra 440 has 4 physic disks. We would like to use 2 physic disks on each Netra440 as a failure group, so a disk group comprise of 2 disks from first Netra440 and another 2 disks from second Netra440. then if one NEtra440 totally dies, then the other Netra440 can take care of application, because 2 local physic disks have the same data.
but how to configure ASM to access to second Netra440 disks from first Netra440? any suggestion is appreciated!

Hi,
I didn't hear anything about a shared device like a storage. If your company is able to afford 8 processor licenses for RAC then investing in a storage should not be a problem. That's the way I used to see and build Oracle RAC databases.
Good luck!
Cheers,
David

    Dear Friends,

  • ASM install not RAC aware

    SPARC:
installed 11g clusterware using crs user, oinstall and dba group,
then install 11g ASM using oracle user, but it does not show RAC option.
ASM install not RAC aware if not use same user?
    Thanks.

I'm not sure if you're talking about creating an ASM instance? The ASM software install is the same as the Database install. Oracle recommends running ASM from a separate Home which would require a separate Oracle database install.

  • Installing ASM in it's own home (non-RAC environment)

    I am installing ASM
When I run root.sh I get the following error:Expecting the CRS daemons to be up within 600 seconds.
Giving up: Oracle CSS stack appears NOT to be running.
Oracle CSS service would not start as installed
Automatic Storage Management(ASM) cannot be used until Oracle CSS service is started.
The install is on Centos 5 (aka RHEL 5). I have set up a user and a group specifically for this install (user: oracleasm group: asmdba) all of which are the owners of the disks (dev/oracleasm/disks) and the home which i am installing it on. But cannot get past the CSS stack appears not be running.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...I have been all over OTN and metalink but no luck.
    Regards,
    Matt

Check if daemon ocssd.bin is running by executing:
    ps -ef|grep ocssd
If it not running then execute
    /etc/init.d/init.cssd run
    sleep 60
    /etc/init.d/init.cssd start
    sleep 120
    /etc/init.d/dbora start
If that works you had problem because of Oracle bug and the solution in metalink note id 264235.1
You need to fix the /etc/inittab file moving the line that had init.cssd run to line before level 3 scripts executed.

  • How to install 11gR2 RAC on 64 bit linux OS

I am completely new to this topic of RAC and need to be installing and standing up RAC on Linux 64 bit OS . I have good knowledge of installing oracle database ENTERPRISE version 11gR2.
Can you guide me as to how to start. I am looking for leads. Probably we will have 2 nodes.

In the Linux note mentioned above there is a link to a Linux Step by Step Instruction Guide. This step by step instruction guide is the best start to finish document I've seen for how to set-up and install Oracle RAC. I believe the guide is written for installing release 11.2.0.2.

  • Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM+RAC

    Gurus,
Need some suggestuon on Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM and RAC option.
We have found many documents on the Oracle, HP, HP-Oracle CTC and third party web sites, but nothing that is specific to this particular combination of separate
ORACLE_HOMEs, ASM and 10g RAC CRS. It is unclear for me from the documentation how this combination of ASM and 10.2g RAC may best be installed.
The high level steps i got after reading lot of docs as follows - but i am not sure whether these are correct or not. if they are correct, can any one share their experience/notes please?
    1) Install CRS
    2) Install RDBMS for ASM HOME - create separater oracle home for ASM instance using OUI
    3) Install RDBMS for RAC Database Home - create separater oracle home for RAC database using OUI
    4) Create ASM database using DBCA -
    5) Use dbca to create database.

Oracle provides 'paint by numbers' tutorials called 'Oracle By Example'. (Go to OTN, check under the Training tab)
They have one for a Windows based ASM/RAC that you might want to review. Not your specific environment, but the steps will be dag-nabbed close.
    I recommend walking the path (http://otn.oracle.com >> training:OBE >> Database 10g Release 1:VMWare:Installation

  • How to install Oracle RAC using 11gR2 on Win 7 32 bit from scratch?

    Hiii,
    I am a fresher and I have a win 7 system 32 bit with oracle 11gR2.
I want to install RAC using two or more servers but I dont know too much about it.
I tried to search on google but all they are giving information in pieces(for win 7) or about Linux(Please tell me why its all Linux everywhere not windows).
Please let me know if there any site where I can find step by step installation from scratch.
What are basic requirements(/software if needed).
    Thank you.

    Hi,
First of all forget about Windows!! Oracle is mainly designed for Linux systems. Oracle runs as real multi-process on Linux machines whereas on Windows it runs as a single process with multi-thread.
Memory usage - huge pages, single CPU run queue, dnfs, storage systems... etc. lots of concepts exists.
Besides Windows is one of the most poorly designed operating systems, you should use it only to watch cute kitten movies on youtube... Believe me, you wouldn't want to learn Oracle on Windows...
So, install virtualbox and then setup Oracle Enterprise Linux on it as a first step... By the way you have to deal with DNS server for release 11.X, RAC, you may start with 10g for now.
ORACLE-BASE has all the installation steps explained detailly, search for "oracle base rac install" on google.
I also explained on my blog, but it is a little bit advanced installation using ZFS storage simulator. DNS server installation is also explained:  http://ilkertaysi.com/2013/11/11/oracle-rac-installation-with-zfs-storage/

    Dear Billy
The storage will be on IBM SAN with fibre channel connectivity for both the servers.
The node A will be only for production and Node B for non production. Pl suggest your recommendations. So, you will configure node1 for database1(instance1) and node2 for database2(instance1)? So much for fail-over... For your proposed configuration, why waste the extra RAC license if you are only going to have the prod db running on a single node? Also Windows???? And you are paying for Windows SERVER licenses as well??? Why? Linux (even Oracle Enterprise Linux) is free and the support cost are far less than for Windows. It is slow and is a nightmare to manage. Learn Linux or AIX or something. I don't do Windows and I certainly would never deploy RAC on Windows. (My deployment of RAC clusters now stands > 75 clusters with the largest at 250TB and NONE of them on Windows).
This is more like RAC-One than RAC. I have a problem using a single RAC cluster to support both my production and non-production work. It also negates the primary reason to use RAC - high availability. In your proposed solution, if your production db goes down on node1(instance1) your application is dead. In RAC, when the middle-tier attempts to reconnect, it would simple connect to a surviving node. You will not have that feature in your proposed configuration.
I also would object to the notion of having production database in the same set of DiskGroups (ASM) or file systems as my non-production data. There are too many times where I have seen a someone execute a process that brought the entire system down due to high I/O - now, if you have this configuration, it is conceivable that your non-prod I/O could affect your production (SAN switch overload, Storage array overload etc...). And all of this does not include the "oops-factor". That's what happens when you thought you were deleting data files for your non-prod database that you want to restore and "accidently" delete production data files.
    You asked for suggestions --
    1) buy more hardware
    2) have 1 standalone for non-prod
    3) have 2 nodes for RAC - deploy production only here.

Are there any more softwares, other than Oracle11g setup, needed for installation? On Linux, you need a certified distro. When installing Grid Infrastructure, it will verify s/w components and lists the ones it need (suh as libaio, gnu c compiler, etc). yum install fixes that (on RHEL-based distros).
What are the basic things I should keep in mind before installing RAC.RAC is only ever as good as the h/w infrastructure it runs on. Specifically the I/O fabric layer and the Interconnect layer. If these are shoddy, not redundant, slow ito b/w, slow ito of latency, then you WILL have a RAC that fails to perform, fails to scale, and is unable to provide high availability and redundancy.

  • Basic questions about installing ASM

I can't seem to find definitive answers to the following. Let me try here. I want to build a Linux server, running RDBMS 11.2.0.3, with ASM. This is just the prototype server, in our conversion from Oracle 11g on AIX without ASM to Oracle 11g on Linux with ASM.
I already have an Oracle VM cluster running, and have built a number of VMs from templates, and all that works fine. Now I'm trying to install ASM, and have failed several times. Maybe I'm doing something fundamentally bad. Here are two questions:
    1. Is it true that the only (reasonable) way to install ASM is to install the product called "Grid Infrastructure"? As best I can tell, the answer is "yes". But GI seems to be so much more than ASM, much that I don't think I want or need. Is there an easier way to get ASM?
    2. The certification matrix swears that Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.3 is certified on Oracle Linux 6. Yet (1) I see many posts on OTN and elsewhere on the net that say it is NOT supported, and that there are mant problems in gettng the installation to work, and (2) I have been trying to install on OEL 6, and can't get the installer to complete. Specifically, the root.sh script fails with "ohasd has failed to start...". Before pursuing my installation problems any more, I just want to make sure: Should this install on OEL 6?

So you will need Install GI to use ASM.
There is one GI installation wich can be installed and configured in two different way. For a Cluster or For a Standalone.
This Options must be choosen during installation.
The GI installation for a Standalone is called Oracle Restart.
The GI installation for a Cluster is called Oracle Clusterware.
Both option above have the ASM feature.

So many issues show up.
After it was certified by Oracle there are several notes on MOS that will help you follow important steps for a successful installation.
I think you should use OEL 6, since Oracle Linux 6 was Certified by Oracle Corporation you have all support on this product.
