Installing black cartridge in HP Photosmart C4280

I've tried to install 3 new black cartridges.  Each time I get an error message that says, "Print Cartridge Incorrectly Installed."  When I replace the empty cartridge, that message disappears.  I know I am installing the new ones correctly!  Please HELP.

Hello msellhorn,
Welcome to the HP Forums.
I understand that you've just replaced that black cartridge for your Officejet 8500a, and are unable to print in black still. I will do my best to help you with this issue.
I have a document for you to follow: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages. Please attempt the steps listed to see if it will resolve your issue. If you have further difficulties or questions feel free to respond with them.

  • Laserjet pro 400 mfp m425dn says install black cartridge

I have a laserjet pro 400 mfp m425dn that keeps giving "install black cartridge" message.  I mistakenly thought it was calling for a new cartridge so I ordered one and installed it.  It still gives the message.  I could not find anything out of place.  I did notice that the left side of the cartridge is slightly raised.  (may be my imagination because it is very slight.)  Any suggestions???

  • Error Message: Install Black Cartridge on LaserJet M1522nf

    Hello:
I have a LaserJet M1522nf and am getting an error message stating "Install black cartridge", even though I have installed a new cartridge. I have tried 3 different new cartridges and still get the same error.
I am currently using this printer on a Windows Vista Home Basic computer.
The current cartridge I am trying is a LD Products CB436A.
This has been going on for months and we're using it as part of our office system. Each day this gets at me and I'm about to buy an alternate brand printer if I can't get this solved.
    I greatly appreciate your help!

I had this problem too - Here's what I found on the HP trouble-shooting/error message site.  The bold italics I added, that was my problem:
"Install black cartridge"       No cartridge installed with door closed.
If the paper tray has been overfilled, it can lift the toner cartridge up from its seated position, resulting in the cartridge not being detected by the MFP.
    Remove the toner cartridge.
Remove all paper from the bottom tray.
Check for any paper jam and, if found, clear it.
Power cycle the printer (turn it off and then back on).
Reinstall the toner cartridge, being careful to make sure it is seated properly in the MFP.
Reload paper in the bottom tray; be careful not to overfill the tray.

  • 'Install black cartridge' message persists

I have a Laserjet M1212nf MFP printer. A few days ago the ink levels were fine, but today I got the 'Install black cartridge'. I bought a new cartridge, but the message persists. I have tried taking it out a few times, and I have powered down and restarted. It makes no difference.
    Any idea how to proceed?

Sorry that you are having an issue with the black cartridge not reading correctly. You can try to clean the cartridge and the print head.
Sometimes the print head does not read the contacts correctly, and needs servicing.
Here is a link for this issue. I hope this helps.

It is possible that the toner cartridge still has some packaging on it or that it isn't fully secured in place.  I would try completely removing the toner cartridge from the printer and taking a look at the steps in the document found here.  The document has steps to troubleshoot when an 'Install Black Cartridge' error is present on the display.
Let me know how it goes.

  • Install black cartridge

My HP Laserjet M1522n MFP tipped over today.  Since then, the control panel has been flashing an error light and displaying the message, "Install Black Cartridge."  I have never installed a black cartridge - this is NOT a color printer.  The toner cartridge does not need to be replaced.  H E L !!

Good day! This means the printer unable to detect there is toner inserted. you might need to try below steps: 1. Reinsert/reseat the toner.2. if error persist, take out the toner and open all trys inspect is there any foreign object like paper debris or paper clips...3. clean the smart chip (gold color)\4. is there any spare toner to try? this steps will helps to narrow down toner/printer issue.

  • Install Black Cartridge error message on new cartridge

I have a brand new HP M127FW laserjet pro printer.  I purchased it Dec 2014 and just opened it today in anticpation of my old HP printer dying and it finally did. I also purchased a HP laserjet model  83A print cartridge at the same time and just opened it today form the air tight sealed package.   I tried to test it as instructed with the existing cartridge that came with the printer and it jammed.  I removed the paper and then tried again and it said install black cartridge. I thought perhaps having sat in the printer for that length of time it had dried out, although I though tthe lazser jet cartidges are powder and don't dry out. Figuring like ink jets cartidges the ones that come with the printer are only partially filled I decided to try my brand new one.  I am having the same error message. On the catridge box it indicates what looks lie a date printed as 201409016.  This is extremely frustrating considering I purchased an HP cartridge not a reseller and payed over $60 for it. Can anyone help with a possible solution. I can't call HP chat support at least for free since it s pay the free 90 days post purchase.

Hi ,  I see you have been troubleshooting an issue with your new LaserJet Pro MFP M127, and I may have found some items you can check.
This issue is usually caused by some sort of packing materials that may be hiding on you. I would double check Setting Up the Printer Hardware for HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw to make sure it's not a piece of cardboard inside the printer. The next thing that may cause this would be if you forgot to remove the orange tabs on the toner cartridge. If you take a look at Replacing the Toner Cartridge, it shows what needs to be removed from the toner before installing it inside the printer. There is a whole setup video about Unboxing and Setup of the LaserJet Pro MFP M127 you can watch as well. If the issue persists, you might still have options covered under the HP LaserJet Print Cartridges and Imaging Drums Limited Warranty Statement - I would still try to Contact HP Support to see if there is anything they can do. Fill in the model number and the form to receive a case number for expedited assistance.  Please let me know if these steps resolved your issue, or if there is anything else I can do to help.  I look forward to hearing from you!  Thanks,

@ Gordon-B -  Thanks for the response. If one has done the cleanings and the other steps listed in the above links n the last post, one would want to replace the cartridge in the printer as it might be faulty. If after one has done that; they find that the print quality is still not producing the desired results, one would be looking at product replacement.

  • Hp laserjet m1522nf "install black cartridge"

My fax/printer (HP LaserJet M1522nf) is still insisting that it needs a black ink cartridge. I JUST INSTALLED A BRAND NEW CARTRIDGE AND IT STILL SAYS TO INSTALL A BLACK INK CARTRIDGE AND WON'T PRINT A THING. I'm very frustrated, I was behind in my work to begin with. I have reset the machine multiple times. Pulled the cartridge out and stuck it back in. Help.

    Hi Stumpedagain,
Please take a look at this suport guide for the error message.  Maybe there is a packing material inside your printer.

  • Streaky printing with new XL black cartridge (Photosmart 7520)

I installed a new HP XL black cartridge in the Photosmart 7520 about 10 days ago.  Today the black and white text printing I mostly do started becoming unreadable - streaky, smudged, faint - even though the ink level report shows about 3/4 full for black (of course the report itself printed with streaks, etc.) I removed and re-inserted the black cartridge to make sure it was seated properly (it was and it is) and then I ran the clean cartridges function on the printer. The print quality report came back looking good (including alignment) except that the black area was streaky. After getting this print quality report, I tried printing text again. The first one page document printed somewhat streaky and with erratic faint areas; the second time I printed it, it was almost unreadable. Any suggestions?

Repeated cleanings and then using the "align printer" function seemed to do the trick.

  • Black Cartridge and terrible support

I have been on the phone for over a hour... I still have been transfered twice to a "different department". Listening the same automatted voice has gotten me to this forum and hopefully I can get some help. I have a Hp laserjet pro mfpm127fw. The cartridge given in the box when opened has a problem. The printer is giving me a message reading "install black cartridge". I dont understand the issue. Please help!

    Hi vchamp16,
Sorry for delay in resolving and transferred to different departments..
This "Install Black Cartridge" error is typically caused by a piece of packing material that got left on the cartridge. The document below should help you fix the problem. If that doesn't work, try doing a hard reset. If neither works, let me know.
Toner Light Blinks or 'Install Black Cartridge' Message Displays on the Control Panel:
    http://goo.gl/Nlqpg
    To do a hard reset:
    1. Make sure the printer is on.
    2. Pull the power cord from the printer.
    3. Pull the power cord from the wall.
    4. Wait 30 seconds.
    5. Plug the printer in and turn it on.
Please get back to us so that we can assist incase if you couldn't resolve the issue.

  • Photo black cartridge life too short

The photo black cartridge in the Photosmart 7525 has a very short lifespan compared to the other cartridges.  I rarely print photos.  Can this cartridge be bypassed to save on ink?

    Hello @MinPville,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you would like to bypass the photo black cartridge on your HP Photosmart 7525 e-All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you with this today.
This printer is meant for printing photos with high quality, therefore there is no way to 100% avoid using the photo black cartridge. When you go to print from your computer, ensure that the paper type is set to 'plain' paper. Also, set the quality to 'draft' or 'normal' rather than 'best' and the printer shouldn't use very much if any photo black.
In this model of printer the HP 564 Photo Cartridge will give you a page yield of about 130 4 x 6in pages. This is based off of a 5% page coverage. The 5% page coverage works out to be about 2 paragraphs double-spaced on your page. Also, the photo black, just like the other colour cartridges, are also used for printer maintenance to keep your printhead healthy. Therefore, a small amount of ink will be used during the printhead cleaning process or printer maintenance that will occasionally run.
When printing photos from your computer and certain documents (PDF or Internet Files) your printer generally uses a bit of colour and photo black to enrich those print jobs as they are sent from your computer to the printer as image files. Should you rarely print in colour I would suggest setting your printer to 'black ink only' which would only utilize your regular black cartridge rather than your photo black.
How to set Black Ink Only:
    Click on your Start menu
    Select Devices and Printers
Right click on your HP Photosmart
    Left click on Printing Preferences
Select the Advanced tab and set the printer to 'black ink only'
Hit Apply and OK to save the changes
Should you ever want to print in colour, then open up the colour document you wish to print and go to 'file' and 'print'. Once the Print dialogue window opens, click 'properties' and set the printer back to 'colour' rather than 'black ink only'. This setting will only be changed for this one job and will revert back to black ink only for any new jobs.
Going forward, should you mainly print text documents and rarely print photos I suggest avoiding Photosmart printers in the future. Rather, Officejet printers would suite your needs and ink usage more efficiently and you can still print photos with great quality.
Please let me know if the information I've provided resolves your photo black ink issues. Best of luck!

  • Installing printer cartridge

I have installed a new printer cartridge (36A; CB436A) for my HP M1522nf.  I have removed the strip, per instructions.  The cartridge "clicks" in and should be working.  But the "!" light continues to blink, and an error message says "install black cartridge" and will not operate.  I believe I have done everything correctly.  Any idea why the printer is not working?  I am very friustrated.

Try cleaning the contacts inside the machine and reinserting the cartridge--use a clean lint free cloth and maybe some rubbing alcohol.
Kudos appreciated if question answered or solution provided
