Installing Bootcamp with Parallels installed

Hey guys.
I need to install Bootcamp to run Rhinoceros and Grasshopper with full graphics support. It isn't a good idea to run these programs only on parallels. However, I am told that I need to install Bootcamp BEFORE parallels if I want them to share the same Windows copy. I already have parallels installed, along with Revit and the full Microsoft Office suite. I don't want to delete all of my installed programs to install windows onto Bootcamp. Is there anyway to salvage this without having to dig up old codes and trying to get all my software back?
My end-goal is to be able to work in Bootcamp for serious CAD and drafting software, whilst still maintaining the capability of opening these same files for viewing and light edting in Parallels while running Mac. I would be using Bootcamp ONLY for Rhinoceros Grasshopper and Revit. Excel PPT word and other microsoft applications would be run exclusively through parallels.
Thank you for your views and responses
- Thomas

without knowing anything about parallels and feeling that the parallels forum would likely be a safer place to confirm your questions then
I would think that they mean that you just have to have installed bootcamp before creating the virtual machine in parallels which is to access the windows partition  not wait with installing the virtual machine software(parallels) itself
but as stated parallels is about the only virtual machine software I have no experience with at all

If I upgrade to Lion will I keep my current bootcamp with XP installed working?

OS X Lion: "Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk (volume name)" appears during installation
Normally, and if you didn't change the number or resize the partitions, should be fine.
I don't think anyone can guarantee anything, which is why backups are essential.
You can even install Lion to an external drive as well.
For Mac, you can clone your system and have a bootable backup; use TimeMachine.
For Windows, there are various tools to backup data or partitions.

  • Installing windows with parallels

    Hey,
I wond to install windows on my mac with parallels buth when I put the windows installation cd in my mac and start the installation progress, the installation cd disappears out of the finder.
Can someone help me to resolve this please

I have VMWare Fusion and Oracle VirtualBox currently on my Mac, with a total of 10 different virtual machines. Never used Parallels Desktop, but the principles are similar.
You need to start Parallels up and locate a button or menu item for a New VM. It will start up a wizard that will ask you what kind of Windows you want to install and how much resources (CPU, RAM, hard disk space) you want to allocate to it. I believe that by default it will capture the CD/DVD device automatically.
Once the VM is created, it is like you created an imaginary computer for your Windows system. Now you have to install Windows on it. Put the Windows install media in the drive and start the VM on Parallels. It should "capture" the drive (the icon will disappear from the OS X desktop) and start running the installer on the VM. From thereon, it is a straightforward Windows installation. When finished, Parallels should offer to install the driver additions on Windows, so it will work and interact better with the Mac.

  • Opening MS attachments in Mail with Parallels installed

Here's the situation that's happening with a friend that I need some help with. She's running OS X Leopard and Windows XP with Parallels. She has MS Office for both platforms. She uses Mail in OS X as her email application. When she receives attachments in email - i.e. Word document, Excel spreadsheet - it automatically opens in Windows (through Parallels) rather than opening in Word or Excel for Mac. Is there a setting she's overlooked that would make the default application Office for Mac rather than Windows XP?
Thanks in advance for any help offered!

This is happening because the documents she is receiving probably were created originally using the Windows version of Office. Have her select a document then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section select the Mac version of the Office application (Word, Excel, etc. depending upon the document) from the drop down menu then click on the Change All button. This should now associate all such documents with the Office application. She will need to do this for a Word, Excel, and PPT document, respectively.
Alternatively, download the freeware utility RCDefaultApp and install it. Then these associations can be handled for all types of documents, MIME types, etc. You will find it at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Can't Upgrade Bootcamp With Leopard Install Disc

    Hi Everyone,
I just installed Leopard and wanted to upgrade my Bootcamp partition. However, when I start up in Windows and then try to install the new version, all it does is hang at Marvell Ethernet (which is the first driver to be installed). Now, one thing may be the problem--the drive that I am currently using to start my Mac-let's call it Drive 2, is not the same drive that Bootcamp is installed on, which is Drive 1. I wouldn't see how that could be a problem because I'm starting up in Windows, not from the Mac. Anyway, any suggestions? Thanks.

That isn't the original install disc as the one that came with the computer would be Grey in color, a very drab looking disc, however, if that was purchased from Apple and not a copy of another disc with just a label stuck on it, it should work.  However, if the disc were damaged then you would have the same problem you are having.  I would try to see if you can get another disc and try that (If you know someone that might have one).  If that doesn't work, then take it to a Genius Bar and have them look at it, they may be able to help you out.

  • I am trying to install bootcamp with windows xp professional on my macbook core duo. This is my first mac and i just purchased it. The disk will partition but when i try to start the installer a white screen appears then a folder with a ? in it appears

I just recently purchased this macbook. The optical drive was faulty, i opened it up and rubbed alcohol on the lens and that didnt work. I connected an old ide dvd rw drive in a 3.5 enclosure and it seems to work like a charm. I installed snow leopard with it so i know that it is in complete working order. I also upgraded the ram so that should not be an issue either. This is a first generation macbook 1.1 with the core duo processor. I just want to install my xp professional operating system onto this unit. I have the original xp professional disk with service pack 2, not a burned iso. When i try to launch the windows installer the dvd drive fires up and it seems like its attempting to launch windows then the screen goes from bright white to a folder with a question mark on it. From there nothing happens. Is there something i can do or that i am missing here?

Your problem is not Boot Camp, in fact, is your optical drive. Win XP requires indeed sp2, but also the internal drive, does not work from external optical drive.
For other possible tricks, please use the appropriate Boot Camp forum, not here. Mac OS X may be installed from both external and internal optical drive and/or internal/external partition of a disk, any disk. Windows is not so generous.

  • Need help installing Windows with Parallels on Mac Mini

I downloaded the trial version of Parallels to test it out. Everything is going fine until it asks me to restart my computer. I go through the basic setup at the beginning, it asks me to enter the Windows XP product key and then asks me to insert the disk. At that point I insert the disk and click "Finish" like it asks. Now I get this message saying to hold down the power button or press the restart button. The screen seems to freeze here since I can't move the mouse or anything.
So I hold down the power button for a few seconds, and eventually the Mac Mini shuts down. I press and hold the power button again to start it back up.
Now everything is restarted but the Windows is not installed. Where did I go wrong? It seems pretty straight forward, but I'm clearly doing something wrong.

Since Parallels is not an Apple product, you should post your question on the Parallels forums: http://forums.parallels.com
You're more likely to get the response you need there, rather than on an Apple forum.

  • Help with Parallels Install

    Anyone,
I am posting this here after already trying to get help at the Parallesl forum. I am trying to install Parallels onto my MBP C2D. I have installed it just fine and then get to the install of the new OS, Windoze! (Need it for one silly work application)
Now all I have is an upgrade for Win XP. On the other forum they told me to download a boot disk for Win 98 and do this, "download a 98 bootdisk from bootdisk.com. (http://www.dehning.com/download/util...sks/boot98.exe) in the vm config, enable the floppy drive and attach the downloaded 98 boot disk image (it should be fine to rename the .exe to .img and attach it directly). Then start the xp install as normal."
I am lost at what to do from this point. If any of you have any suggestions or might know of another place to look for help it would be much appreciated! I am going bald trying to figure this out! Also I would prefer not to install boot camp and make a partition on my HD.
Thanks in advance for any and all help and advice!

    Hi Nathan!
I have no idea what the folks giving you those instructions were intending. If you only have a Windows XP upgrade disk then you either need to install a full (non-upgrade) older version of Windows or purchase a full license.
The boot disk you were directed to will only allow a system that can't boot CDs to boot enough to see the Windows installer. You still need a full version of Windows.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Install bootcamp with 2 partitions that already exist

I Need to use ms publisher and pararells won't cut it because I need to copy and paste. Currently I have two partitions , one for applications and one for the user. It works for me. bootcamp says it needs one partition. What can i do? Is there a way to safely merge the twho partitions together without losing data?

No, there is no safe way to merge the two partitions together, but there is a way to do it non-destructively.
If you open Disk Utility and select the main drive entry on the left, you will find your partitions stacked one on top of the other from the Partition tab. You have two partitions, already, one of which is the boot partition. Usually this is the topmost or first partition. I'll assume that's your situation. You need to transfer everything on the second partition to the first partition. You need to do this with backup software such as Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.6 so as to preserve permissions.
Once you have that accomplished you need to delete the second partition. Select the Partition tab. Select the second partition then click on the Delete [-] button to remove it. Click on the Apply button. Next, use the cursor to grab the triangular shaped gadget in the bottom right corner of the remaining partition and drag the box all the way to the bottom of the map. Click on the Apply button.
You may now use Boot Camp Assistant to create your Windows partition.
I suggest you have a backup of everything just in case something goes awry.

  • New MBP,..Should I install Bootcamp first,..then Parallels to the Bootcamp partition?, New MBP,..Should I install Bootcamp first,..then Parallels to the Bootcamp partition?

What is the install process for Bootcamp/Parallels?
I have a new MBP being delivered today and need to install Windows for one program. What is the process to install a VM?
I heard that I should install Bootcamp first, then install Parallels to the Bootcamp partition. Any advice? Thx.

I guess I shold explain more about what I am doing.
I will be running a CRM program (Windows Based), and a Order Entrry program (Windows Based) (Memory Hog) all the time. Along with this, I will have Lotus Notes for Mac and Mac Mail open all the time.
Is there any harm, comcern, issues, hesitation,....to using Bootcamp to Parallels/Windows?
I just want to get this configuration correct the first time.
    Also,...Am I able to drag files between Mac/PC ???

  • Bootcamp after XP and Parallels Installed

I have one PC only game that my wife INSISTS on playing. I have a new iMac with 10.5.1 and Parallels/XP Home installed. The game runs poorly in VM mode. How can I install Bootcamp now if XP is already on my computer? Can I just install Bootcamp with a second copy of XP on the same computer? The hard drive is large enough to accommodate the install of both.

Sorry for the confusion, i'll go into a bit more detail. If you want, you can run Bootcamp, install windows off the CD and you're all set. I only suggested the further steps as it might get annoying having two separate versions of windows (one Bootcamp, one virtual), as well as an inefficient use of disk space. A single copy of XP installed through Bootcamp on a separate partition is probably the best solution. You are then able to boot into it with the Alt key and also run it whilst in OS X using Parallels.
Assuming you have files on XP that you want to keep, there are a few ways of transferring your data to the new Bootcamp partition (bear in mind that when you've 'Bootcamped' into XP, your OS X partition can't be seen by windows). One way is to copy everything you need to an external drive. Alternatively, when you run the Bootcamp Assistant and install XP, you will be asked what file system to use. If you choose FAT32, the partition will be accessible from within OS X. Here's what I'd recommend doing:
    1. Install and run Bootcamp Assistant
    2. Choose FAT32 filesystem
    3. Install XP from the CD and run Windows Update etc.
    4. Boot into OS X
    5. Start Parallels and run your XP Virtual Machine
    6. Drag and drop files you want to keep (documents, photos) from XP to the new hard disk that appears in Finder (this is your C: drive for Bootcamp XP). You may want to jot down the programs you have installed so you know what to install on the fresh OS
    7. Delete the Parallels VM.
    8. Add new VM to Parallels and select 'Add Bootcamp partition'
You then have one version of XP you can run natively or as a virtual machine. Parallels will create a separate hardware profile for itself and you should find you are asked to choose between them on startup. To change the default profile and give you more time to choose, right click on My Computer, select Properties -> Advanced tab -> System Startup and you'll find a load of options there.
    Hope that helps
