Installing classic application in OS9

I am trying to install the application which is supposed to be "classic" app. When I ran it under classic mode with G5, it ran fine. But, when I tried to run it with iMac G3 with OS9 (no OSX installed), it keep giving me infamous error message saying "The document "app name" could not be opened, because the application program that created it could not be found." I am quite confused why it doesn't run with OS9. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks!!

Hi, MN mac dude -
Is the program still in the .zip format as was originally downloaded? If so, try dropping it onto Stuffit Expander's icon. Doing this should expand the archive. Inside the opened archive may be an installer, which should then be run; or one or more folders that should be pulled out of the archive before the program can be run.
If you are copying the program's folder(s) from the G5, that may not work properly - OSX sometimes ignores and can remove the File Type and Creator codes needed by OS 9. It is best to start with a fresh copy of the download still in .zip format, copy that to the G3, then open (decompress) the .zip file.

  • Installing Classic applications

I have software that won't run in OSX.
    I'm running 10.3.4 and 9.2.2 in Classic.
When I double click on the installers icon, it grows and fades (as if it were launching) but then nothing happens.
I'm guessing it's trying to to install in OSX and failing, but how do I get it to install in OS9? (The Help pages in OSX have been no help at all.)
    Quicksilver G4 Mac OS X (10.3.4)
    40gig iPod

Hi, JD. Early Quicksilver G4s can boot to the special version of OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 that was shipped preinstalled on them. The last generation of Quicksilvers boots only into OS X. Go to System Preferences and see whether you are able to select OS 9.x as your startup OS. If you can select it, do so, then close Sys Prefs and restart your computer — it should start up in OS 9. If you don't see OS 9.x listed as one of your startup options, you probably have a QS that only boots into OS X.
If your Mac is OS 9-bootable, an alternative to designating your OS 9.x System Folder as the startup OS (a setting that will persist until you change it again) is holding down the Option key while starting the computer. Since OS X and OS 9 are on different hard drives, the Startup Manager should present both as options. Choose OS 9 and click the right-arrow button on the screen, and you should start up in OS 9. This won't change the preference you've previously set in Sys Prefs > Startup Disk, so you won't have to change it back again afterward.
Here again, if OS 9 isn't shown as an option in the Startup Manager, it's probably because your computer can't boot into OS 9.
If you can get the G4 started in OS 9, I'll be interested to hear whether the Digidesign installer runs that way. Installer VISE is a commonplace OS 9 installer format, and I believe it ought to open and run in Classic mode under OS X. But if this particular installer checks for some necessary hardware component or otherwise tries to verify the compatibility of your hardware with the software it's installing, it won't be able to access the hardware as it expects to do in Classic mode, and that may prevent it from running.

  • Change memory for classic application from 10.3.9

    Changing memory alloted to aplication...
Normally I'd quite the app, highlight it's icon, hit "command-i"
and change memory in the dialog box that pops up.
However this classic app give me the correct dialog box without my
being able to highlight minimum and preferred memory amounts.
The only change I've made since installing classic application
on this mac i bought used is to make myself "admin"
and deleted old admin after creating my own password.

An oldie but a goodie very important to us.
Or is there some simple fix I'm overlooking?

Hi, Gregor, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Wow! I haven't heard anyone mention WalkThru Pro in at least five or six years. I used it to "pre-build" a total reconstruction of my house back in 1995, so my wife could see what it was going to look and feel like, inside and out. Darned if the house doesn't look and feel just like the model did (or better), so I'm still happily married. But WTP has been retired since then. It paid for itself dozens of times over, in a single use!
Are you certain that the icon on which you Got Info was the application itself, and not an alias? If that isn't the issue, then yes, it would be worth reinstalling WTP to make sure you have appropriate permissions to tinker with it.

i read something in the topic that i cannot use classic application in an intel-based comp, does that mean that theres no way i can install this application??
    That's right.
What is this app? Perhaps there is an alternative that someone can recommend.

  • Help! Why do my Classic applications refuse to run?

I don't know if this is the best forum for this problem but hopefully someone here will either be able to help me or tell me where I can look for help. I have been using Classic mode with my G5 to run Microsoft FrontPage, which I use for my website. For the last 8 months everything worked fine, but recently I have encountered some problems that I don't know how to deal with. When I try to launch Frontpage Explorer I get the message "server timed out". If I try to go straight to Editor I can open individual pages, but when I try to save the page I get the message "out of memory". At that point I not only have to save the page without changes, but the page is then erased!
I have tried the following. First I removed the OS9 system folder from the G5. Then I removed the FrontPage application. I shut down the computer and after restarting I reinstalled the OS9 folder and the FrontPage app. However, the results are identical. Fortunately I have the web pages backed up in several locations so I have not yet lost any data, but I am no longer able to update my website, which is a critical part of my business.
Does anyone have any ideas for anyting else I can try? Could this be some sort of virus? Everything else seems to work fine, only my Classic application has been affected.
    G5 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Another "symptom" to report. I decided to use my old G3 that also has Frontpage installed to update my site. But I got the exact same error messages! I even booted the G3 in OS9, but still was unable to launch Frontpage; or to be more accurate I was unable to get Frontpage to open up my web pages.
I thought that perhaps the number of webpages I had stored was too much for Frontpage to handle, so I moved ~90% of the pages to a separate folder and then put the folder in a different hard drive. No luck, same results.
I did try rebuilding the desktop on both the G3 and G5, but it made no difference. Any suggestions will be very gratefully accepted!

  • How to install Classic on Mac OS X 10.4.10

I have recently installed a MacOS X 10.4.3 on an iMac DV,
and upgraded it successfully to 10.4.10.
I was carefull to partition my disk including the OS9 drivers
during the MacOS X 10.4.3 installation process
    (through Disk Utility).
    I have a MacOS 9.1 install CD.
I started my iMac from this CD, but it doesn't show
    my disk.
How may I install Classic on my MacOS 10.4.10?
    I know it's possible!
I'm running it everyday on 2 other Macs I've upgraded
    from 10.4.9.
    Unfortunatelly, I didn't keep a written receipe
of how I managed it (shame on me!, and anyway it was
a long and non human path from 10.2 to 10.3 to 10.4
    through all the updates).

    That's unusual.
How may I install Classic on my MacOS 10.4.10?
Normally I'd say do what you just did. In fact, that's how I've installed Classic on older PPC Macs in the past.
Is this OS 9.1 CD either a generic (white) CD or the CD which shipped with the iMac?
I can't tell if its a generic or specific one, because I always
bought any new version of the system. Nothing specifying which
kind of CD is written on this CD. It's a mostly white CD with
    a huge orange 9.
The white OS 9 CD is usually a generic 9.x CD. Later versions are usually 9.1 or 9.2. The CD which ships with a Mac is usually coloured: green or gray or blue or some other colour.
I found a workaround: I copied the "System Folder" from the
last backup on MacOS X 10.3.9 on "/". I then started up "System
Preferences" and "Classic" was among them and I've been able to
select the freshly copied "System Folder" to start Classic
    from.
Copying over the _OS 9_ System Folder will usually work, so long as you don't copy the System Folder from a CD. Copying the _OS X_ System folder (note small 'f') will not work.
After a few tests all my files necessary to make my work
were again available and opened with the right application.
Nice to know that all is well.

  • Need to find/re-install Classic control panel, and diagnose error code -1

A while back, I wiped OS9/Classic completely off when HD space was running short. Now I need to install some old software that requires Classic. The computer's Software Restore disks claim to have reinstalled Classic, and all the right folders are there in all the right places, but --
No Classic control panel anywhere on the drive, and Classic applications refuse to launch ("The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occured (error code -1)"). Restarts, and rebuilding permissions, don't help.
I've used Pacifist to comb my Jag install, Panther install, and Software Restore disks for the control panel. No luck. Where do I dig it up? And will installing it resolve the error code -1?

err, I mean "preference pane". Sorry, my head's been back in OS9-land all day...

Do you have the HFM ADM drivers installed on the workspace server -- I believe if you do not have those installed then you are going to have some issues.

  • How do I install Classic?

I just hired an Apple Authorized Reseller to swap out my iMac's hard drive for a 300 GB model. They put in the new startup volume and installed Tiger, which I updated to 10.4.4.
Problem: I was accustomed to having access to MacOS 9 "Classic" mode before the install. Does the Tiger installation DVD offer a way to install "Classic" onto the hard drive? If so, how?
Also: will the new Intel-driven Macs allow Tiger to launch "Classic" mode at all?

Just out of curiousity I opened my Tiger Install disk 1 with Pacifist. I then used its Find function to search for "Classic Startup". There is a Classic Startup.app on the disk. It was in the Essentials.pkg. The only thing I can think is you don't have an OS 9 System Folder installed. I posted a link in a preceding post to a link referring to this. This is different from the OS X System folder, which says System & has a blue X on its icon. The OS 9 System Folder says "System Folder" with "Folder" capitalized. It has an orange 9 on it.
If I go to HD/System/Library/CoreServices there is a Classic Startup application there. Perhaps you could check & see if this is the same on yours. If this isn't here, something's wrong with your installation. I would contact the reseller.
About not saying anything about OS 9 during installation, I believe one of the screens say something about installing "Additional software". Can't remember now. Maybe the person who reinstalled your OS did not use this option.

  • I would like to install classic, 9.2.2

My present OS is 10.4.6. I want to install Classic 9.2.2 as I have some older applications that I need to use. Do I have to format the hard drive and install 10.2 again, then install 9.2.2 then update to 10.4.6? I really hate to spend the time doing this.
    I have a 17" flat panel imac G4.

I'm not sure how this falls into the iPhoto 4 or earlier category.
Have you tried looking at the Mac Help menu item on your computer? Try the search phrase "Install Mac OS 9".

  • Installing Classic Mode on Tiger, DVDs, emulators

I want to install classic mode on a Mac running OS 10.4 (Power PC processor). We have DVDs for three different kinds of Mac of the same generation, but none of them come with the extra tools CD/DVD that is mentioned in Apple's instructions and in other posts as containing OS 9. The install DVDs are the Swiss (German) version. Is the third DVD only in the US version?
We have 9.0 CDs for two Power Mac G4s, plus one G4 computer that's broken, and one that's alive and well, running 9.2. Is there a way I could lift the system folder from this computer, copy it onto the hard disk on the 10.4 computer, and "bless" it, or is more required than the system fold for classic mode to run under Tiger? I'm wondering whether it's possible to install an emulator like Sheepshaver, since I could start with 9.0 and upgrade that to 9.2, and then transfer the necessary files (system folder plus ...?) to use the built-in classic environment.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You don't say exactly what computers are involved which places us at a disadvantage in helping you.
If you have a copy of OS 9.1 or greater on a computer you can simply copy the whole System Folder to a PPC running Tiger and set it up to be Classic.  Put it at the root level next to OSX's "System".  If you actually want to boot to OS9, that's where knowing the details of the computers and operating systems involved is essential.
Technically, system installations can be machine specific, but I think for OS9, and especially when used as Classic, this isn't as much an issue.  Classic isn't in charge of any hardware anyway.  Some people may post saying, "Oh, it absolutely must be installed correctly," but frankly I have copied OS9.2.2 from computer to computer as I worked my way through models and had it work on any model that supports OS9, and that was for booting.
If all you have are installer versions of OS9 on optical that is where you may run into trouble and may ultimately end up needing copies of the original discs (which likely are no longer available).  You will have to get the computer to boot to the installer disc in order to get it to actually put a usuable copy of OS9 on the computer.  Again, this is where knowing the exact disc versions and exact computer specifications is important.

  • Installing classic illustrator and photoshop to Mac os Tiger

How can I install classic illustrator and photoshop applications to Mac os Tiger
      Mac OS X (10.4)

Illustrator 10 and Photoshop 7 were the first OSX version, the next version of each they called CS (for Creative Suite, they were really pushing buy the Suite of 4 or 5 Adobe programs which cost big bucks) and the latest versions are CS2. I've heard of many having problems with CS2 so I haven't upgraded. Both Illustrator CS and Photoshop CS work well in Tiger.
But!!... on an Intel Mac programs need to be Universal versions, specifically designed to run on Intel Macs, older version can run but will open in to an emulation mode, Rosetta, that runs much slower, you will be running at least 50% slower than on a G5. But it's not like Classic, you won't even know when Rosetta is running.
And, apparently there are problems converting Illustrator and Photoshop to Universal and it's going to take a while. The rumor is that CS2 will not be updated, you'll have to wait for CS3 and there is no planned release date for that yet.
On the other hand, I read a recent article that said if you install Windows XP on an Intel Mac (Apple has a free program called Boot Camp that will do this but you need to buy XP), then the XP version of Photoshop will run really fast, faster than most boxes running XP. Oooo, the irony!
Anyway, there is a program that allows you to run a Classic emulation on the Intel Macs but I can't find my bookmark on it so you'll have to do a web search (or someone can post it).
I'm assuming you already have the Classic versions. You'd probably be better off getting the Classic emulation and running those until Adobe upgrades to Universal software. Kind of a waste to spend the bucks on brand new versions of Illustrator and Photoshop now when the versions you need are probably a year away.

  • How do you install "Classic Mode"? The online guide doesn't match what I have?

HI -- I have a MacBook Pro and need to install Classic Mode so my kids can play some of their games ... I looked online, got instructions to go to the disks that came with my computer and that Classic Mode would be there. But it isn't. What am I missing???

There might be a terminology issue here.
Classic is the ability to run OS 9 programs on PPC-based OSX computers.   It would not have been included with a MacBook Pro which runs an Intel processor.
Rosetta allows an Intel-based computer to run PPC based *OSX* programs.  It will not allow you to run programs that required OS9.  This *is* included with your MacBook Pro.
Are these OS9 (or below) games or PPC games for OSX?
