Installing Classic on a Mini... not all it's cracked up to be

Ok, I finally figured out that the #2 Install Disc that came with my Mini contains OS 9. I proceed to click on the installer icon, the process begins, and when I get to teh "Installation Type" step, things break down.
I'm looking at a list of Mac OS 9 types, broken down by language. Next to this column of types (English, Italian, etc.), is a column called "Action". In this Action column, for ever type of OS 9 install - it says "Skip". The file size in MB for each OS 9 install type is in the 3rd column.
I've selected my hard drive for the install. I select the English OS 9 Install from the 'type' list. it is highlighted, and displays in the dialog box below showing what's to be installed.
I click the install button, and it says "You cannot continue. There is nothing to install."
I blink. I blink again, and am at a complete loss.
Ideas: My mac mini has a 40GB hard drive. It has 5GB free. Is the OS X somehow not allowing the install to occur? The mac os 9 install only requires 300+ MB. I don't know.
I know I'm logged in as the admin. I know I'm using the right disc... but I'm just stumped by this.
Any advice/wisdom is greatly appreciated.

  • ML clean install on 2013 Mac Mini - not working

    Hello guys,
I have a weird problem with my new Mac Mini. I received it yesterday, the first thing I wanted to do was to format "Macintosh HD" and do a clean install of Mountain Lion using a bootable USB. I will be using the computer only for audio composing / mixing and I don't want any pre-installed junk on it. I've done this numerous times with other Macs in the past. However, when I try to boot using the Mountain Lion USB, it gives me a "prohibited sign" and I can't boot from it. Then, I tried to boot with the Mountain Lion recovery partition and re-install Mountain Lion through there, but I can't format the internal HDD using Disk Utility, most likely because the recovery partition is also on that hard drive? I've tried several things, without success:
    Repair disk (permissions)
    Reset PRAM / NVRAM
Make bootable USB's using Disk Utility, Lion Disk Maker and Carbon Copy Cloner
I imagine if I could boot into recovery mode and format the HDD from there, it would work using online recovery, but how can I format the HDD when the recovery partition is also on this HDD? And why doesn't the Mac Mini accept the Mountain Lion installer USB in the first place? Or does the installer not recognize the Mac Mini? Very confused, any help would be appreciated.
    Best regards,
    JPeters86 / NL

If your Mac mini has a fusion drive, it shipped with a "special Fusion Drive only" version of Mountain Lion. While the difference is apparently mainly a Fusion Drive aware version of Disk Utility, no other version of Mountain will boot your mini. However, you should be able to reinstall a working copy of Mountain Lion complete with all the apps you did not want by doing a Cold boot (boot from a powered off condition) while holding down the Commd+R keys and performing the reinstallation from the Recovery drive. An internet connection is required.
If by any chance you erased or reformatted the entire drive, thereby deleting the Recovery partition, you can still recover by holding down Option+Command+R during the reboot. This will force a reboot via the internet and will be a lot slower, but you should still be able to install a functional copy of Mountain Lion this way.
Hopefully the two streams of OS X will merge in Maverick.

  • ITunes Match not all it's cracked up to be.......

I have approx 4210 songs in my iTunes library and having recently purchased an iPad decided to subscribe to iTunes Match. When I tried to run the programme it initially found 3155 songs then froze completely. I left it running over night and there was no change. I logged out of my pc and attempted it for the second time and it matched 2944 songs before freezing again. The third time I attempted it, 3245 songs were matched and it didn't get any further overnight.
I spoke to the support team who couldn't fathom what was going on, apart from there maybe being a problem with some of the song formats. I doubted this was the issue. Then I remembered our iTunes account was under my partners id and because our iPad was under a different id I wondered whether that may be causing a problem. Therefore I set up an iTunes account to match the iPad and ran the programme again. This seemed to resolve the issue and iTunes Match ran successfully, even thought it took 3 days in all.
The problem I have now though is that any songs that could not be matched still show in my iTunes library but have now disappeared from my iPad. I was told by Apple that any songs that couldn't be matched would remain in tact but in the original format/quality. Disappointing that this isn't the case. How can I get these songs to show on my iPad along with the matched songs? I guess switching off iTunes Match may make this happen but if not how can I resolve this?
Also, £21.99 for 12 months subscription doesn't seem to excessive if things are up to scratch. However, on listening to the matched songs I haven't really noticed any improvement in sound quality and still find some songs play at different volumes than others. I would've thought they would all stream at the same level/quality!!!!
    Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I suggest that you add iCloud status column to song view. This will tell you what has been matched, uploaded, purchased, inelligible, duplicate or waiting. What is the iCloud status for the songs not appearing on your ipad?

  • S3 not all it's cracked up to be?

I accepted delivery of the new S3 on Monday the 9th. Things were great out of the box. I love the design and the layout of the phone. But today things took a turn for the worse. I had noticed some bugs, but today, the phone was locking up, and rebooting. I couldn't post on facebook, and it gave me trouble trying to stream I heart radio. I closed I heart radio and about 5-10 mns later, my phone started vibrating. I picked it up and saw it was downloading a photo my wife was texting me, and it started to stream the i heart radio I was trying to listen to 10 minutes prior even though I had killed the app.  As the day went on, it got worse. I couldn't post on my status on facebook, or on friends walls. It would go black with the exception of the top bar (battery, signal, etc,) freeze up (wouldnt respond to any buttons) then restart. This happened after 5 attempts today.  To top it all off, the signal seems weak. Is the phone just so thin that Samsung had to skimp on the antenna or is this Verizon's fault? I always had trouble at work, but not like this. The signal is almost non-existent. And it's the same on the road home. I am incredibly unsatisfied, and I'm thinking of returning both phones (2) before my 14 day trial is up.  Truthfully, I was so aggravated I wanted to throw the phone. I thought I had chosen the new leader in the industry with cutting edge technology. It's not going at all how I thought it would be.

I agree with B33, I Heart radio is not that good. When there are almost as many 1 star ratings as there are 4 star ratings, you can see that it is problematic.  I use TuneIn Radio a lot, or I look for apps from the stations that I want to listen to online. Another big one to use is Pandora.
As far as your problem, 1 thing to try would be to Factory Reset the device back to stock, and let it run for a few days to see how the phone reacts. If it works fine, THEN add in an app or 2, but remembering which apps you added when, because they can cause some of these problems...

  • IPad mini not recognised by iTunes after updating to iTunes 11.1. All other devices are recognised...

After upgrading to ios 7, adn iTunes 11, I had some problems with both airplay and having my ios devices not recognised by iTunes. After a few fixes (re-installing Apple Mobile Device support ) manually, all is now looking good, apart from my iPad mini.
Windows recognises it when I plug it into any of the USB pports on my PC, however iTunes does not see it. The device is recognised by iTunes onother windows and Mac computers I have.
Is it posible to isolate which driver is being used by the mini, and uinistall it? I guess that if Windows sees the device as a "new one", it will re-install the device driver, and probably fix this issue.

  • Installing Classic on a Mac Mini

I am using the Install Disc 2 which came with my Mac Mini. It has an icon labeled "Install Mac OS 9 System Support." When I use it to try to install Classic (OS 9), it lists the package names, including Mac OS 9 (US English) with the Action listed as "Skip", although the package size is 325 MB. So that when it tries to install, it says there is nothing to install.
Is there another Install Disc 2 which I should have? Obviously, this has worked for other users, and I also need the Classic environment.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Because Pre-OS X system software is not multi-lingual, it comes in many different language versions. The Classic support CD doesn't have any versions selected by default. Click the language version you want & it then show how big the install will be. Unchecked boxes tell the installer you don't want that item, so it says "skip."

  • After reinstall not all apps are installed

    Hi!
I've had the problem that my iPhone 3G freezed and the restart only shows the apple logo. So I started it in recovery mode, reinstalled iPhone, activated it and my computer and synced one time. All contacts, calenders and all settings were restored - wonderful!!!
But not all apps have been installed. But why? All apps are lying in the directory where the others are lying which were installed. After another sync nothing more happened. Then I double clicked an app-file directly and then it showed up in iTunes under Programs. After another sync some programs are installed on iPhone but not all.
So is this normal? How could I install all my apps?
Is it possible to download apps which I didn't synchronized before restore, because iTunes says there are no downloads available.
    Thanks for help in advance!!
    Greetings
    Udo

As far as I know you shouldn't have ANY TROUBLES with the NATIVE APPS...you know like Safari, Calendar, Photos...etc. However, the apps that you download from the app store, I believe, need to be re-installed manually. This is what I have to do with my original iPhone with 2.0 software anyway. I would think that it is the same with the 3G.

  • On my MacBook with Lion Safari does start, does not react immediately after trying to open it. Installing a new Safari does not help. Removing parts of Safari in the Library did not help. Where can I find and remove all components (LastSession ...)?

How can I reset Safari with all components? On my MacBook with Lion, Safari does not start, does not react immediately after trying to open it. Installing a new Safari does not help. Removing parts of Safari in the Library does not help. Where can I find and remove all components as LastSession and TopSites?

The only way to reinstall Safari on a Mac running v10.7 Lion is to restore OS X using OS X Recovery
Instead of restoring OS X in order to reinstall Safari, try troubleshooting extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
If it's not an extension or plug-in issue, delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

I am running IE 11 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit Service Pack 1. When I attempt to install Flash Player, it goes through all of the steps, tells me the player is installed, and welcomes me. I cannot open the player and it does not appear in the Start Menu, Task Manager, System Tray, or anywhere else. When I try to open a file, the site tells me Flash player is not installed. I have even downloaded it to a separate folder and ran the install with IE shut down completely. And Shockwave in ENABLED but in 32 bit .I have been trying to get this to work for about 3 weeks now.  HELP!!!

Flash Player is a browser add-on, not an executable program.
If you need to open a local SWF file you will need the standalone player (Projector) from http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
Note that the download is the player, not an installer, so you will need to make the file association manually.

  • New version of ITunes installed - Not all music files are being recognized

My system crashed and Itunes was automatically 're-installed.' My music is located on my external hard drive. When I reconnected my music to ITunes about 3000 music files did not appear in my library. Before the re-install all music files were available in the library.
The music files are all still located on my external hard drive. Strangely, when I copied my music on my external hard drive to create yet another back up of my music many music files were missing on the copy. The missing files were a combination of downloaded music from a cd and purchased, no trend.
I welcome any advice on how I can get 1. my ITunes library to read all of my music files (which are in ITunes format) and 2. how do I copy all of my music on my external hard drive to make a safe back up (I-tunes back up is not an option because not all of the music appears in my library)
    Thanks for your help

Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, I have many documents, but not all, that cannot be opened in either Pages 5 or in Pages '09.  The names show in my document lists, but are greyed out.  They do not show any extensions, but I'm sure at seast some of them are PDFs.  As I cannot open them, I am unable to try to experiment with any solutions - I am not tech savvy, but can sometimes fix things by trial and error.  I have no issues with sharing documents as I have no other devices.  I just want to be able to open my saved documents!  Also, the documents I can open have to be persistently coaxed to open to a point that it is extremely aggravating.  I am not so happy with this recent "upgrade."  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You use Finder to find stuff. It is what you use to look at where your files are kept and to rename, move or trash them. If you double click on a file in Finder it finds the right software to open it for you.
To open particular files you use the right software for each type. Usually, but not always, the software that made the file.
Pages opens files ending in .pages. Also .txt, .rtf, and doc.
Pages 5 is the latest (but certainly not the greatest) version of Pages. It has trouble opening all sorts of files including the older Pages '09 files but it will still do it.
Unfortunately Apple has chosen for Pages 5 to also save its files as exactly the same file extension .pages despite it being a different format that can not be opened by the older Pages '09.
As we all know Apple is wise and great beyond belief and would not do something that on the face of it looks extraordinarily stupid and shortsighted. Therefore we know that it must be our fault and we are not holding the software right. Because we are bad users, we must be punished, by either having to use Pages 5 or jump through hoops to avoid using Pages 5.
If you have installed Pages 5 any .pages file (old or new) will be opened by Pages 5. If you then save the file, Pages 5 will change the file format. So don't open your files with Pages 5 and don't save them if you do.
To stop Pages 5 opening and resaving your old files, you need to drag it to the trash and empty it.
When it is no longer around to annoy you, you can go back to using Pages 09.
