Installing CloseView under OS X

I am a person with extremely low vision, and I have enjoyed a lot of success with email and Internet using an assistive technology screen magnifier called CloseView that came bundled in OS 7, OS 8 and OS 9. Now my old iMac is getting creaky and I'd like to buy a new Mac, but the new Mac not only does not have CloseView, it will not allow CloseView to run or be installed from a floppy. Instead, OS X offers Zoom as a screen magnifier. Zomm DOES NOT WORK. It renders magnified images of text that are far too fuzzy to be useful. CloseView renders magnified images that are sharp. So what am I to do. A brand new Mac, with Zoom instead of CloseView, is not usable by a low vision person like me. But my old Mac, with CloseView, is getting more and more outdated, with most things popping up that it cannot do, more documents it cannot open, more links it cannot manage. What am I to do? Does anyone know how to get the OS X to run CloseView?

Hi, riehles. CloseView can't run in OS X because it's designed to access and control your computer's video hardware directly, and such access is denied when OS X is running the computer. When OS X is active, it prevents any other software from accessing and controlling any of your hardware: OS X maintains total control. There are a good many games and a few other OS 9-based applications that are unusable in Classic mode for the same reason. Any program that, when running under straight OS 9, is able to reach out and adjust your hardware without recourse to a control panel, will find itself unable to do so in Classic mode. Well-behaved ones simply refuse to run in Classic; less mannerly ones will open but then quit unexpectedly, freeze, or force you to restart Classic mode itself.
Given your pressing need for a solution to the deficient (for your purposes) OS X Zoom feature, you've probably already tried adjusting the Contrast setting in the Universal Access > Seeing control panel. Increasing the contrast does increase the apparent sharpness of the displayed Zoomed image. Changing from color to greyscale also eliminates the color-fringing that I imagine could exacerbate apparent blurriness, depending upon the specific nature of your visual impairment. If you've experimented with these adjustments and still find the Zoom feature unsatisfactory, then I'm afraid all I can offer is sympathy — I don't know what else to suggest.

Error on installing iTunes under Win 8
I have recently upgraded to Win 8.  When installing iTunes the following error shows:
"An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT.type="win32",version"8.0.50727.4053.publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b 9a1e18e3b",processorArchitecture="amd64". Please refer to Help and Support for more information HRESULT:0x80073715.
I am running the ITunes x64 install.  I have installed the V++ redistributable with no change in result.
I have subsequently downloaded and manually installed via the Apple Software update program iTunes.  However this does not allow my iPad to be connected as it is not the x64 version.

After spending an entire day on this issue, I figured out something that worked.  After installing Windows 8 (64-bit) then Visual Studio 2012 (or 2013) then the latest 64-bit iTunes app, I got the 0x80073715 error.
What finally worked for me was:
    1) Get all the Windows updates and hotfixes - especially the ones for Visual Studio.
    2) Go to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=14431 and download the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update"
    3) Only install vcredist_x64.exe.
After running these steps, I was able to completely install iTunes on my Windows 8 64-bit instance.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot install JMF under Linux Mandrake 10

I simply cannot install JMF under the Mandrake 10 Official Linux distribution. I downloaded the jmf-2_1_1e-linux-i586.bin file and tried to execute it as root. It unzipped some files then showed me an error message about AWT and GTK+. I found a hack consisting of modifying the .bin file to have the PATH variable point to SUN JDK, the error does not show up, but the installation still does not work. In fact, the installation works, but the Diagnostics applet keeps telling me than class files are not present. My Mozilla 1.6 Java plugin is working and displaying the applet. My JMF lib directory does not contain sound.jar, such jmf.jar. I set the CLASSPATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH according to the readme.html file. I would like to know if it is a compatibility problem with Mandrake 10, the 2.6 kernel or if JMF just DO NO work under Linux. In the latter case, JMF is a violation to the Java portability philosophy and I would never use it on my own initiative, just if I were asked to.
After the files are unzipped, I have the following warning and error messages.
    Warning:
    Name: HorScrollBar
    Class: XmScrollBar
The specified scrollbar value is greater than the maximum
scrollbar value minus the scrollbar slider size.

Even if I do not have a working video capture card (I have an ATI All-in-Wonder 128 but it is not working under 2.6 kernel), JMF should work because some people do not have a video capture card. I also tried with the cross-platform ZIP file, but this one does not contain sound.jar either and the Diagnostics applet keeps complaining about missing class files. I tried to search on the Web for solutions to this problem or for a way to change the CLASSPATH used by the Mozilla Java plug-in (if it uses a different CLASSPATH than the one from the environment variable), but nothing, nothing. Is there a distribution from which JMF would work better than Mandrake 10? Or can JMF work only under Microsoft Windows or Sun Solaris? I also tried Blackdown, but a README file directed me to the Sun's page, nothing to download here about JMF.

well, your not the only one.
I have it working in Debian, and JDS.(JMF is setup automatically in JDS).(2.6.6 kernel)
I looked at the installation structure of JDS, and was able to duplicate what they did for Debian.
Maybe it will work for Mandrake two??
ok, all you have to do is copy or create soft links from your Mozilla directory, just like you did with the java plugin, and link to all the *.so files in JMF-2.1.1e/lib directory.
    Should work.
I also read that not haveing the native files only matters if you are doing Capture. not play.
to get your ATI All-in-Wonder 128 to work, make sure you install the correct driver, and have it working under linux, then try it in JMSTUDIO

  • How to install itune under Windows XP 64-bit professional with SP2?

I have iPhone 3GS for over a year and I have set it up at my work computer (Windows XP professional) with latest iTune and it work great. Recently our IT has upgraded our system and all of our new machines has Windows XP 64-bit OS.
I can't figure out how to install iTune under Windows XP 64-bit, to synch with my e-mail, contact and calendars any more?
    Can any one help?

New machines? With XP 64-bit? Your IT department is being rather foolish, in my opinion, deploying new installations of XP 64 since Microsoft discontinued mainstream support for it (more than two years ago) and it's never really been satisfactory.
Anyway, there is no version of iTunes that supports the 64-bit version of Windows XP and almost certainly never will be. If you search the iTunes for Windows forums for "XP 64" you'll find threads describing the process some people have used to "crowbar" iTunes onto XP 64, with varying levels of success, none of them complete. Connecting to iPhones is one of the most problematic issues.
    Regards.

  • HT4623 Why they install apps under their Apple IDs in the shop???

Why they install apps under their Apple IDs in the shop??? After I realised that, I cannot make any updates for the apps installed there. Shall I reinstall them or otherwise the problem can be solved?

The shop where I bought my Iphone
So, not an Apple Retail Store or an authorised Apple resellers shop?
They even said that without installing the apps, they will not give me a warranty.
The iPhone warranty is provided by Apple if buying a new iPhone from an authorised seller, not the shop.

We have several iphones, ipod touches, ipad and mac's if we all install icloud under the same apple account will they all sync together...we don't want that to happen!!

If any of you are like me, I had one single AppleID under MobileMe.  Under my AppleID I had two additional Email addresses, one for my wife and one for her Mother.  Each used their individual email accounts on their login on the home Mac and on their individual Iphones.
In order for them to not lose their email acounts when mobileMe goes away and/or you move your appleID acount from MobileMe to iCloud, you simply need to beaware of the folowing.  Have each person with an email address under your AppleID MobileMe go to www.me.com; enter their email account and password in the corresponding fields.  However, don't press the login button. Instead press the sentence under the login fields that says something to the effect of "do you want to move/migrate to iCloud.  Follow the prompts from there.
In essence what Apple has done--albeit not communicated anywhere--is that they automatically created AppleIDs for each of those additonal email addresses you have/had under MobileMe.  Therefore, use that email and password after moving from MobileMe to iCloud and your good to go.

  • Installing arch under virtualbox - cannot open default display & stuff

    hi!
this is not my first time I try to install arch under virtualbox, and the results I get are the same.
Installation was pretty obvious: installed arch, added user to lp,wheel, games, video, audio, optical, storage, scanner, power, users groups, installed xorg (all group), installed virtualbox-guest-utils, added vboxvideo vboxsf and vboxguest to /etc/modules-load.d/virtualbox.conf. Also installed mesa and xf86-video-vesa.
Then I edited .xinitrc and added there /usr/bin/VboxClient-all line.
In result, when I try to launch X by typing startx, desktop changes resolution to a bigger one, then blank screen and the resolution changes back to previous, displaying the following:
If I try to launch any de (like bspwm or xfce4) I het a message saying "Can't open the default display".
The weirdest part is that if i change user to root, I can startx and the ugly twm will start, but if I try to launch de, I get the same error message.
Now, what have I missed during the installation which in result gives me what I get?
    Thank you.

Trilby wrote:Please post your actual .xinitrc.  The output in your screenshots indicates that X exited normally, without error.  In other words, nothing went wrong, it did what it was told to do, you just likely have not told it to do what you want.
good thing is that i actually installed xfce4 and uncommented the corresponding line in the .xinitrc and the xfce4 launced successfully. Maybe I was frustrated because under root I got something, and under user - failures.
The bad thing is that when I want now to launch bspwm with the following .xinitrc
I get a completely black screen with no response

  • No airport card installed appears under the status icon on my Powerbook g4

The airport connection quit on my PowerbookG4.......massage " No airport card installed" appears under the status bar. I have a Macbook Pro that shares the same airport and the Macbook Pro works well......

This message is almost always an indication that the wireless card has failed, and will need to be replaced. Take the MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or Apple Servicer to let them have a look and confirm.

  • Install 8i under Win 98SE

I successfully downloaded and installed Oracle8i under windows 98SE. Yet when I go to SQL Plus or SQL Plus worksheet, if gives me a sign on for username, password and host name. I have no idea what to enter here. I tried system/manager, and it doesn't like it. Therefore, I can't use Oracle until I get past this point. Any suggestions, please.

As part of your installation, were any net service names created? To check, find your ORACLE_HOME on the start menu and then select Network Administration. Next select either Net 8 Assistant or Net 8 Configuration Assistant. If you don't see a service name defined for your database, create on. After saving the network configuration when next trying to login to SQL*Plus the name of the service you created in Net 8 Assistant is what you use for the hostname.
Of course make sure your database and listener are running before trying to connect.

  • Java install problem under redhat 9

I download rpm and install it under redhat 9. I can compile program (the class file is generated) but can not run it.
I checked the path and see /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04. WHen I check the version, it tell me version "1.3.1". It soulds like I have 2 different version of java installed. How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks

Probably not a mix up. Try to update your path wirh the path to the bin directory of the java version you want to use. Something like :
    export PATH=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04/bin:$PATH

  • Installing Vista under Leopard give Windows error - ATA driver related??

Trying to install Vista under Boot Camp in new Mac Pro running Leopard with 2 serial ATA drives. Wish to install Vista as clean install on 2nd drive. The second drive gets properly formatted as NTSF and is seen by Vista installer. But install quits with error "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation." Apple tech support says this is a Windows issue. Microsoft says "if you are trying to perform a clean installation of Vista you must provide the correct drivers . . . select the "load drivers" option." Microsoft also advises to "check website of HDD manufacturer for updated drivers. Apple does not list the manufacturer of its SATA drives. So I am stuck. Any help would be appreciated.

You have to format the volume again in Vista DVD, then restart and boot from DVD again. I've done this a dozen times so far.
It is a Mac Pro issue, I think. I only use x64, so it could be 64-bit Vista related. Also, it seemed to me BCA created FAT32 even though it was evenly divided on 500GB drive. (In the past, it was NTFS, but Vista didn't like it anyway, and it has a later revision of NTFS probably, just as HFS+ has changed and evolved).
If worst comes to worst, pull your OS X drive out entirely. Goes easier that way also.... but still need to format the partition.
I've got Ultimate and Business along with Home Premium, but only first two support dual-cpu / dual-core and full amount of memory. 32-bit on Mac Pro Vista seems to be limited to 2GB of physical memory. So two strikes against x32 Vista on Mac Pro.
This is because there is some support for Xeon and Itanium in Vista for EFI, but MS will offically support EFI (UEFI 2.0) with SP1, and more PC manufacturers will come on-board.
You can find the SATA chipset information, but that isn't the issue.
I liked playing with RC1 a year ago and said "I need to learn more" so I stayed with it. Have to get creative sometimes.

  • Xmod not auto-installing drivers under Windows XP 64-

The specs list support for Windows XP 64-bit, but when I tell it to automatically find and install drivers it says it can't find the necessary drivers. Creative support said they don't have stand-alone drivers for this and that it "should work".
Can anyone please help? The Xmod shows up in Device Manager with a yellow exclimation mark.
