Installing CS4 over CS3

I installed CS4 only to find that after installation was complete, I am still in CS3. I've done the install twice, same result, help! I am on a macbook pro OSX 10.5.8, thx...

How do you know you are still in CS3 and CS4 is not installed at all , did you recieved any error message at the time of CS4 installation ?
May be the file association hasn't been changed becuase of which when you double-click any file it opens the CS3 version.
I would recommend to check in the Applications Folder in Mac HD to look for the CS4 version applications and if they are available there then open them up.

  • Install CS4 over CS3?

I have a trouble-free installation of CS3 Web Premium, and have just purchased CS4.  Any thoughts on whether any or all CS3 components should be uninstalled before putting in CS4?  Or should I just do a parallel installation and have both?  I have a few ongoing websites in Dreamweaver CS3- I assume they can be opened in CS4.
I have heard that CS4 Dreamweaver/Photoshop projects may not be backwards compatible with CS3.  And also that uninstalling CS3 AFTER installing CS4 will create problems.  Any comments on those points?
I thought about removing all CS3 components EXCEPT Dreamweaver and Photoshop, but that seemed like asking for trouble...
    Thanks for any comments/advice/warnings.

I have a combination of CS3 and CS4 products on my pc and haven't run into any problems at all.
After installing CS4, I uninstalled all the CS3 products apart from CS3 Fireworks.
CS4 Fireworks was causing me a few issues, but it happily resides on the pc with the earlier version and I can open one or the other with no problems.

  • Can you just install CS4 over top of CS3 ?

    I installed CS4 on a clean PC.
No problems to report on the instalation there.
I am wanting to install CS4 on my laptop that has CS3 on it.
I'm having troubles finding info on what I need to do (if anything) to aid in a smooth transition.
Any suggestions on where to look would be most welcomed.
    Thank you

    Fantastic.
    Away I go then.
    To CS4 and beyond.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Can I safely install CS4 alongside CS3

    Hi all
We have a couple of jobs out on proof at the moment that were done in IDCS3. We are moving to CS4 and I want to know if it is safe to install CS4 on a Mac that has CS3 - will we still be able to run CS3 when the CS3 jobs come back? I know we could open up the CS3 docs in CS4 but I'd rather take time to check the documents (and the scripts used) to make sure they're right in CS4 rather than do it in a rush when the job comes in (and it will be in a rush!).
    thanks,
    Iain

Well, I've done it and they both seem to work okay. Was slightly worried as when I ran the updater after installing CS4 it updated the Adobe Updater and I thought that if it made it a CS4 version it would no longer update CS3 programs (Indesign and Acrobat 8 Pro). But it does, so I'll sleep easier tonight.
Thanks to all for their comments,
    Iain

  • Re-install CS4 over CS5

    (also posted in Premiere forum)
What would you think about the possible effects of putting CS4 back in my system now that I have a clean install of CS5 (from the OS on up, still haven't reloaded everything)?  I am still trying to get HDV mpeg clips to preview in Bridge and Windows Media player without success and Premiere still seems sluggish.  Getting "file update errors" when I capture new footage.
This is in my dual processor/Quad Core 3.0, 8 gig RAM, Vista Ultimate 64bit, NVidia 5700 (1.5gig) graphics setup.  It has worked flawlessly in CS4 before I upgraded to CS5.  Previews, workflow, pretty stable (only problems were usually pilot error), overall quite happy.
So, in short, does anyone think that putting CS4 back in might give me back the mpeg CODEC support (external to Premiere - all clips play inside Premiere OK).  Don't anyone suggest 3rd party CODEC packages: been there, done that and spent a week doing a clean install from ground up.  And, "Yes", all file associations inside Bridge and in Windows have been set up.  Latest versions of Quicktime and Windows Media Player.
When I moved to CS5 I also went from Vista 32bit to 64bit.  All updates have been installed to that, but could that be where problem lies?  My business relies on recycling footage from project to project, mixing and blending from nearly 3TB of storage, so bringing them all into a Premiere project bin to preview is out of the question as you all well know.
Sorry to drag on, but I love Master Suite a lot and would love to make it fly higher than it did in CS4.
So, does it hurt to back-wards-re-install products?

Standard advice is to de-activate and uninstall CS5 and run the Adobe Cleanscript. Then install CS4 followed by CS5.
Otherwise you may completely confuse your system.

I'm sorry, but "get rid of Quicktime and Windows Media Player..."???
Did I miss something over the years but don't we need Quicktime installed for video functionality in CS apps and WMP is built into Window OS so how might one "get rid of it"???
Those are hardly 3rd party apps in any shape or form.  Thanks for the conversation, rg

  • How to install CS4 Design Premium on another computer, no internet or DVD drive available?

I was looking towards getting Adobe Design Premium CS4 installed on my Surface Pro, but it has no DVD drive, and my Wi-Fi connection isn't really fast. Actually, it'd take quite a while to download any big file, leading me to search for another alternatives (my other computer already has CS4 installed, both are Windows). Is there any way to install CS4 over at my Surface Pro, without the use of wi-fi nor any insanely complex procedure? :) Thanks.

Yeah. It didn't have a file extension, at least not one I could see, while all my other programs (.exe's, .zip's, .rar's, .mp4's, etc.) were displayed. I tried many things, but… I ended up just writing ".exe" at the end of the file name. Surprisingly, it worked perfectly.
    So, there's a few more questions I'd like to ask… :D
Can I install CS4 literally anywhere on the HDD/SSD? Like, even in my Documents? It's asking me to place a folder on my desktop, and to be honest, I don't want such folder there :( .
Can I delete the .7Z and the .exe when the installation is over? Or is that crucial to CS4's operation?
    Thanks, once again :)

  • CS4 insists on being default app (over CS3)

I work on a PPC G5 (OS 10.5.8) with CS3.   When we installed CS4 (the last version to support PPC?) the CS4 apps insist on being the default apps for all things Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.   (WHY we'd like CS3 to be the default for awhile is another story...)
I've tried changing this setting via "Get Info" and "Open With", but it instantly resets from CS3 to CS4.  I've even tried changing it with RCDefaultApp, but still no deal.
(I think I WAS able to change the .pdf default from Acrobat Pro to Preview...don't know why this one would work--but not the others.)
    Anything else I can try?

There is no reason to uninstall CS4! But when you have  multiple versions of an application installed, the newest one is the one that "wins" over older versions. That's perfectly normal behavior. Which means you need to be careful when opening a document and drag it to the correct version instead of just doubleclicking the document.
And set it back to open pdfs either in Acrpobat Pro or Adobe Reader. Preview will not show all that the Acrobat family will of a pdf.

  • Installing cs6 over cs4

I currently have Cs4, I downloaded it directly from Adobe, I have no Cd, I just have the serial numbers.
I have a year long internship and my boss wants me to download cs6 onto my computer. However, after this year I will have to uninstall c6s. I'm wondering if when I uninstall cs6, I will not be able to have cs4 on my computer anymore? And I'm not sure if cs4 is still downloadable from Adobe? I'm just worried that I will no longer have cs4...

You do not have to install CS6 over CS4.  You can have both on the machine.
CS4 is downloadable from Adobe and it should remain that way for a long time to come.  There is also an alternative site where you can download the trial version and activate it to full use with your serial number.  The links for both are provided below.  For the second you need to follow the instructions carefully for the downloads to work.

  • Installing CS4 and keeping InDesign CS3

Can I install CS4 without removing InDesign CS3? I need to keep both on my computer. is there a trick to this? Also, if I decide to remove CS4 later from my computer and move it elsewhere, can I uninstall it without imperilling InDesign CS3?

You can install CS4 and keep CS3. Just remember that IF these are upgrades, you cannot use CS4 and CS3 on different computers simultaneously. They are for the use of a single person. Technically, your upgrade license for CS4 supersedes you license for CS3. You no longer have a license for CS3 anymore. I doubt Adobe objects to you using  CS4 and CS3 on the same computer. You can remove CS4 on a computer and put in on a new machine. A commercial license allows the non-simultaneous use on two computers. You probably can turn on the old computer when you have an occasional job that requires CS3.

  • Is it necessary to uninstall CS3 before installing CS4?

I currently have CS3 Premium (Student Licsense) on my MacBook. I bought CS4 Premium (also a Student License) from my college and am planning on installing that so that I will be up to date with what is in our graphic design computer lab. But I wasn't sure if I needed to uninstall CS3 before installing CS4. My school doesn't sell the upgrade so I had to buy the actual CS4. I'm pretty sure my laptop doesn't have room for both, but I just wanted to get some feedback on all of this so that I can make sure I'm doing everything correctly.
I was also wondering if my CS3 files that are currently saved on my MacBook will be effected in any way when I uninstall CS3 and install CS4?

    No need to uninstall.
In fact its wise to keep the older version until you are familiar with the new version. I have almost all versions of Photoshop going back to 2.5.1 as well as the 4 creative Suites happily installed and working together on my G5.

  • OK to have both CS4 and CS3 installed?

    HI,
I am going to be installing CS4. Any problems if I leave CS3?
    Thanks,
    David

No problem at all. I have 7.0.1, 8, 9.0.2, 10.0.1 and 11.0.1 happily coexisting on my machine. I can run two versions simultaneously by launching the older one first.
One VERY important caveat though: If you later decide to uninstall CS3, do not just put the Photoshop folder in the trash. You MUST use the Adobe Uninstaller for CS3. Since said uninstaller can and does damage the CS4 installation, if you remove CS3, also remove CS4 through its own uninstaller, the re-install CS4 again.
Repair Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility before and after each installation.

  • Installing CS4 Production Suite -- CS3 Remains in Tact?

Probably a dumb question, but when I purchase my CS4 Production Suite upgrade, it's a completely new install, yes? CS3 applications are unaffected across the board I assume.
I'm excited to get CS4 on board, but I have a lot invested in AE CS3 as far as plug-ins go and am watching/waiting to see when my plugs will be CS4 compatible.
    Thanks for the thoughts.
    David Jolosky

One point of caution. There's a known issue where uninstalling CS3 after having both CS3 and CS4 co-installed will cause a problem with Adobe Media Encoder. It will crash with an error about source file not found. So if you must have both versions installed for a while, please remember to uninstall CS4 and reinstall it AFTER you remove CS3.

  • Install CS4 upgrade without CS3 installed?

I'm moving all my production software from XP pro SP3 to a new Vista Untimate SP1 machine. Nothing is installed on the Vista yet, I just received my CS4 production prem upgrade suite, can I just install CS4 on the Vista machine without installing CS3 first since this is an upgrade version?
