Installing Dictionary 2.0.2

I'd like to move the Dictionary 2.0.2 that is on my MacBook 10.5.6, onto my iMac 10.4.11. (The 1.0.2 Dictionary on my iMac is not nearly as good.)
Can I? How?
I moved it over on a USB stick, but I can't get it to open. Will the newer Dictionary not work on the older operating system?
Thanks much.

I don't know for sure that you can't run Leopard's version of dictionary in a Tiger system.
But you already know that the easy way - transferring just the app file, does not work. If you wanted to pursue this, I guess you could try further by renaming your Tiger HD>Library>Dictionaries folder as Dictionaries.old, and then copying the Leopard Dictionaries folder into your Tiger HD>Library. You would probably have to deal with permissions issues to do this, since those folders are owned by system
But my own advice is not to try it, and to stay with the Tiger version. I think that trying to run the Leopard version of any Apple app in Tiger is not a good idea in general, is not likely to work in this case, and is not worth the risk of messing up your system.

  • Serbian dictionary in InDesign and install dictionary

First question is can I install Serbian dictionary and how? Altought Help provides very good explanation there isnt such topic how to install new dictionary. Second is I want to ask for feature Serbian dictionary. Croatian is very similar but there are so many differences to check spelling and gramatical errors and too much work to add all words to dictionary

That's not a feature in InDesign. You can't choose any arbitrary dictionary and use it. If you had InDesign CS5.5, your choices would expand to include the Hunspell dictionary.

  • Trying to re-install Dictionary.app but it doesn't work

    Hi,
I've deleted dictionary.app by mistake (Leopard 10.5.8). I've used the Mac OS X Install DVD, chose optional software and ticked Oxford Dictionary. The installation was successful but I cannot find dictionary anywhere in my imac... Repeated the process a few times, restarted, etc - no luck!
I am obviously doing something wrong but what??

That actually installs the dictionary, not the application. Try this:
How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD. However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
    • Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • I upgraded to iOS 8 from 7 but the dictionary is not working. please help.

the moment I upgraded to iOS 8 I cannot refer to dictionary.  no word found error is coming. this is happening. in iPad mini retina, cellullar and wifi model.

Just want to say that my 1st gen iPad Air is having the same problem. I get word not found error when I use my dictionary. There's an option to install dictionary. Have you tried that? I'd like to add that if you successfully add a dictionary, don't be surprised if the installed dictionary is missing sometime in the future. That's what happens to my iPad and a friend's iPhone 6 Plus. Our devices keep forgetting US English dictionary that we've installed. We both run iOS 8 (mine is 8.1.2 and my friend's is iOS 8.1.3).

  • Can we get the list of words with hyphenation breaking used in English:US dictionary?

    Hi,
I require list of words with hyphenation breaking used in English:US dictionary. I have reviewed in InDesign supporting files in my local folder but I couldn't get. Can anybody assist?
    regards
    Masthan

InDesign uses Proximity dictionaries for most languages to verify spelling and to hyphenate words. You can add words to each dictionary to customize it. You can assign different languages to text, and InDesign uses the appropriate dictionary to handle spelling and hyphenation.
There are possible breakpoints the dictionary will consider and then show up in the InDesign , if you want to know between which two syllables Indesign’s dictionary prefers to hyphenate, and what other possible breakpoints the dictionary will consider.
Choose Edit > Spelling > User Dictionary.
In the Language menu, choose a language. Each language contains at least one dictionary. If you want the word to be added to all languages, choose All Languages.
In the Target menu, choose the dictionary where you want to store the word. The Target menu lets you store the changes in an external user dictionary or in any open document.
In the Dictionary List menu, choose Added Words.
In the Word box, type or edit the word to be added to the word list.
Click Hyphenate to see the word’s default hyphenation. Tildes (~) indicate possible hyphenation points.
If you don’t like the hyphenation points, follow these guidelines to indicate your preferred hyphenation of the word:
Type one tilde (~) to indicate the best possible hyphenation points, or the only acceptable hyphenation point, in the word.
Type two tildes (~~) to indicate your second choice.
Type three tildes (~~~) to indicate a poor but acceptable hyphenation point.
If you want the word never to be hyphenated, type a tilde before its first letter. If you need to include an actual tilde in a word, type a backslash before the tilde (\~).
Click Add, and then click Done. The word is added to the currently selected Dictionary List.
Note: Remember that hyphenation points interact with the hyphenation settings in your documents. As a result, the word might not break where you expect it to. Control these settings by choosing Hyphenation in the Paragraph panel menu.
By default, hyphenation and spelling exceptions are located in user dictionary files stored outside the document on the computer where InDesign is installed (dictionary file names end with a .clam or .not extension). However, you can also store exception lists inside any InDesign document. In addition, you can store word lists in an external user dictionary, in the document, or in both. The location of existing dictionaries appears in the Dictionary preferences.

  • OverDrive media and Dictionary Pro in conflict?

Hi: I downloaded the OverDrive Media Console for this is what my Public Library recommended. It linked up to Library and worked perfectly. Then I installed Dictionary Pro, it worked but is a waste of money.
    I deleted Dictionary Pro.
Now when I tap the OverDrive icon instead of opening as per usual I get a screen which says "Recent Applications' and it has two icons, OverDrive and the Dictionary. At this point nothing works.
I deleted and reinstalled both programs and get the same thing.
All other apps work as before.
    Any ideas please?
    Thanks.

Hi: I got this reply from the Dictionary person. It doesn't explain why the PB should freeze! Can it not cope with more than one Android app working at the same time?
I took the really simple approach and wiped the PB clean.
But it is useful to know about this problem. It would also be useful if Android ported apps were flagged before you buy the app. It would make life easier.
    Donald
Some apps for Blackberry Playbook are Android apps that have been ported, in your case, Dictionary and Overdrive. In order to run them, the Playbook launches an Android runtime, which is why all Android apps show up in one window instead of seperate ones.
This is a common problem with the Playbook. The only solution I have found is to do a restart of the device, which also restarts the Android runtime and will fix your problem.

  • Remove word from firefox dictionary

In the dictionary I had installed, there are misspelled words. Originally, I thought I have added them accidentally, however, after going to my profile (%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\as6zjsxj.default) and editing persdict.dat I found out that they come from the original dictionary, not my modifications.
I just don't understand why there's no "Remove from dictionary" context menu item.

You can use Add to Dictionary to add you own modifications to the spell checker.
To modify entries in the built-in or in an installed dictionary you would have to edit the used dictionary file directly on disk, either in the dictionaries folder in the Firefox program folder or in the extensions folder in the Firefox profile folder.

I have synced with itunes tonight and it is still 'loading'. No black cross appears top left as it is still loading so I cannot delete it HELP PLEASE!!! Thanks

Any change after powering your iPad off and on?
If not, download the app with iTunes on your computer. Assuming you already have Sync Apps selected under the Apps tab for your iPad sync preferences with iTunes, make sure the app is selected under the Apps tab followed by a sync to install the app on your iPad.
