Installing extra RAM Tabs difficult to pull

Plastic pull tabs will not pull out existing memory. How hard can I pull, the instructions say 'gently'

The memory eject tabs on my 27-inch iMac do require a fair amount of force. In order to make sure that you don't tear the tabs from the memory slot make sure you pull straight down. If I recall correctly it takes approximately 1/4" of movement in order to eject the memory.

  • Problem installing extra RAM

    Hi,
I recently decided to increase my RAM. I have an iMac G5 with iSight ( Power PC ). I bought a memory module from the online Apple Store here in the UK, by clicking on the model ( under Memory ) and selecting the 1 Gb module - 533 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM ( it made no specific mention of the PC2-4200 compliancy but I assumed it was the right one given the route I followed ). It duly arrived and I installed it by following the manual. However, on checking About This Mac the extra RAM was not registering, ie still showing the original 512 Mb RAM. I called Apple Tech Support and we tried a few things like resetting PRAM etc,but no change. Eventually, I was put on to sales and arranged to retunr the module and get a refund. I got the impression by the way the conversation went that this was not the first time this had happened.
So, no extra RAM. Anyone tried to install extra RAM in an identical model? And, if so, did they get their module from Apple? I'm assuming this is nothing to do with the fact that I have a Power PC model and the current models are all Intel?
Any help and/or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Any RAM can be faulty, and I suspect the one you got from Apple was. Go online and Google for PC2-4200 (533MHz) DDR2 SDRAM memory. Kingston is a good brand and should come with a lifetime warranty. Most RAM from sources other than Apple is cheaper as well. The RAM you bought is correct for your model, and make sure that when you instal it, you hear it click into place.
    Please post back with results,

  • Disappointed after installing extra RAM :-(

    Hi,
Well, I got the RAM today and installed it. It shows up on the "about this Mac" memory list so I know it is okay.
However, I have to say that I am not noticing much of a difference at all in performance. It's really disappointing. There is no increased briskness in terms of opening programs and I am still getting the spinning ball.
I feel like I wasted $100.00 but am hoping there is maybe some system problem I am overlooking.
I really don't want to have to erase and install.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Kallum

    Kallum,
You did the right thing in purchasing the RAM, I assure you. Look back at your earlier thread, and you will notice that I hinted at the possibility that there may be more going on with your machine than just RAM issues...
I'm afraid that you are facing the possibility of erasing and reinstalling.
This isn't the end of the world, though, and we can get you back up and running in short order. The key will be making a good backup, from which you can restore everything. In fact, it is likely that you will end up taking more time with this, than with the actual erase and reinstall.
Do follow another poster's suggestion that you reset your PRAM by holding down Option-Apple-P-R at startup, and continuing to hold until your hear a total of 3 chimes, but don't be too disappointed if that doesn't help.
Post back with the results of this, and let me know what resources you have at your disposal for making a backup. An external drive is really what you need, but let me know what you have.

  • Installing extra RAM

I hope someone can help me. When I bought my powerbook I added 512MB of memory which they did in the store for me. I just bought another 1GB so removed the 512 and put the 1GB in its place but now I understand that I can add both, but where is the second memory slot? I saw the 1.67Ghz processor and behind that was the 512 slot which I took out, but where do you store more if you want to? Thanks for any assistance

Sorry for delay in reply but I packed up laptop to take to Apple store – but didn't get there. They are confused too, as the memory slot should be empty – not filled with processor. Here is the info:

  • Extra RAM

Hi guys, quick question about the 15" Superdrive Powerbook. Is it easy enough to install extra RAM? Would I have to go to a professional or could I install it myself? Cheers!

Here's the link to Apple's instructions on how to add extra ram:
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/pbg4/pbg415fw800mem.pdf
You may want to open it up to see what you have now....1GB may mean that you have two slots filled already....the factory 512 and another 512. If that's the case, then you'll need to remove one, or both, to add one or two 1GB cards.

  • Do i need extra RAM to install adobe design standard cs5.5

I have an iMac bought mid 2010 snow leopard 10.6.8. I am looking to buy adobe creative suite design standard CS5.5, will I need extra RAM?
    I hope not!
I only really need photoshop, illustrator and indesign, so my other question is can I just install these from the package?
    Please help anyone!
    Thanks.

No, I am saying the three programs that you want to use in the suite, if you are planning on using all three programs (at the same time) then it is possible your system could slow down, then a RAM upgrade will help.  Give it a try it may work out okay.
Yes, I know how to backup separate things on to another external hard drive.  Just connect the hard drive make sure it is formatted for use as a Mac hard drive. Open disk utility and click on the hard drive at the bottom of the window it will show you the partition map scheme, it should be GUID Partition Table.  If not then you should format the hard drive but clicking the erase tab and the selecting Mac OS Extended (journaled) from the format drop down box.  If you are going to use the drive to transfer files from Mac to PC then you should select MS-DOS (FAT) the only problem with this format you will not be able to copy file larger then 4GB.  Then just open the find and drag and drop folders and files to the external hard drive.

  • Installing 2x1 Gig extra Ram

    MSI P35 Neo2- FR
    2 x 1 Gig Ram
    Windows XP
    Video 8000GT  one Gig Ram
    Intel Dual Core E8500
    Bios 1.8
    Newbie --
I am thinking about installing 2 x 1 Gig extra Ram, I understand that Windows XP 32 bit, will only recognised a total of 3 Gig. Does this mean that the system only operates of 3 Gig of Ram, all be it 4 Gig of Ram is inserted?

    You could buy 2 x 512Mb modules......
You will not really see big increase in performance for day to day tasks. If you edit photos or do media work then yes you will see speed increase.
On a sidenote:- Did manage to acheive 3.5Gb seen buy XP pro, by dropping to a 64Mb graphics card.....

  • Satellite U200-181 - How to add extra RAM?

    Hi
I've enjoyed my U200-181 very much, but would like to have some extra RAM in addition to 512 Mb installed by default. How can I do that?
How many SO-DIMM slots available? Are there any disassembly instructions?
    Thanks in advance

changing the memory is very easy.
    1. pull off the black strip above the keyboard (it just snaps in place)
    2. remove the 2 screws
    3. pivot keyboard forward being careful not to damage keyboard cable
    4. remove 2 screws on big metal plate on the right.
    5. remove plate to expose 2 x ddr2 200 pin sodimm slots.

  • Checking & installing new RAM

    Hi,
    I have a Pavilion dv7 product number VG420AV notebook with 4 GB DDR3 system memory (2 DIMM).
I am wanting to upgrade the memory to 8 GB.
Hp told me to buy a 4GB, 1600Mhz, PC3-12800 memory module (SHARED).
I am not sure if I need one stick or two.
How do I check to see if I have an avilable slot to install new RAM ,& how do I install new RAM in my notebook?
    Thanks fo the help.

That is a dv7t-3100 model. 2 ways to find out about the RAM. 1. Download and install CPU-Z and look at the memory tab; or, 2. Just pull the back cover off and look.
    Here is the Service Manual:
    Manual
    Page 4-17
And you do say you have 2 DIMM(s) which is all the slots available so to upgrade you are going to have to remove and replace existing memory.

  • Installing new RAM and hard drive and installing mac os x

    Hello all.
I have a new hard drive and ram for my macbook that I plan on installing. Would it be okay to install both at the same time and then install Mac OS X from the install discs? Or, would I need to install the hard drive first, install Mac OS X, and then install the RAM?
What do I need to do?
Also, when installing MAC OS X from the discs with a new hard drive, will it allow me to do a fresh install as soon as I enter the disc? Or, do I have to restart the computer with the disc in and hold down the C key?
Please bless me with your wisdom.
    Thanks.

  • Does PRE10 64-bit REALLY make use of any extra RAM?

I am in the middle of a DVD Burn to Folder with Premier Elements 10 64-bit (installed on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit).  I have 5 gigs of RAM but according to Task Manager only 2.11 gigs total are in use.  Soooo....does the advertised benefit of being able to make use of more RAM really exist?  In theory it should, but I feel a bit duped by what I'm seeing.

After taking a closer look at all the Physical Memory items under the Performance tab in Task Manager as well as the Memory tab in Resource Monitor, I realized I didn't quite understand memory usage like I thought I did.  I did a bit of Internet searching on the subject and ran across http://brandonlive.com/2010/02/21/measuring-memory-usage-in-windows-7/ which did a good job of clearing things up.
While the Memory bar graph in Task Manager>Performance was showing only 2.11 gigs being used it showed nearly as much memory being Cached.  Apparently the two values have to be added in order to determine the total amount of data actually in RAM.  The cached data is information that is not currently being dealt with by the processor and held in RAM rather than being written to a page file on the hard drive.  Apparently all of my RAM (except for a few MB's) was in use after all.
I am working with VHS captured video that was captured in an H.264 format.  Since it is SD video I guess that would help to explain the lower amount of Physical Memory actually in use than what I expected.
    Live and learn...
As far as the 5 GB of RAM...yeah it is a bit peculiar.  The computer is an older Dell XPS 600 with a Dual-Core 3GHz Pentium and an 800 MHz bus.  It originally had 4GB of RAM (Four 1GB sticks).  I came into posession of a 2GB stick of RAM and had to pull one of the existing 1GB sticks to use it.  So the three original 1GB sticks plus the "newer" 2GB stick gave me a total of 5GB's.

  • Early 2008 mac pro more beachballs with extra ram

I have just installed and extra 8 gig of ram however i seem to be getting more beachballs hangups than i had before. I have installed the ram in the appropriate fashion but i just get more hangups. I have cleaned the system using onyx and all the caches are clear but i still get hangups. Please help

I see more trouble from people using Onxy. Coincidence?
Does it work with just the new RAM?
They are fully Mac Pro FBDIMMs with large heatsink and in paired slots?
Have you run Apple Hardware Test and Memtest (or Rember) with them?

  • What do I gain by installing more ram ?

    Hi !
I would like to know what are the advantages of installing more ram on my powerbook ? Would installing an additionnal 512 mb ram or 1gb ram speed up the idvd compression to dvd ? More generally while I gain performance on game graphics or video compression ( which takes quite a long time on a powerbook )?
    thank you

    Hi Yanis,
No performance gain in graphics speed, no, but
a smoother and quicker computer use in everything that uses "hard disk accessing" while running a task.
    Simplistic answer:
The more RAM is available, the less tasks need to use Virtual Memory.
And RAM is much faster than VM, too.
If you often hear that your work uses hard disk accessing, then you'll be happy with extra RAM.

  • How To Install New RAM - tell what I've got

All: I've installed RAM on my Desktops over the years but never on a Laptop. I purchased my MBP with 1GB RAM but now that I need to run Parallels for school classes it appears from all the threads I've read here that Parallels needs at least 1.5GB RAM to run OK and more to set it on fire.
Q1: How difficult is it to install RAM on a MBP?
Q2: I don't know how many chips are in there now but from what I have read it appears that putting in 'Pairs' of RAM versus just getting one 1GB RAM chip (to add to my existing configuration whatever that is) is the preferred method. Comments? Suggestions?
Q3: A local Mac Store wants $35 to install the RAM (not including the price of purchasing the RAM) is that the prevailing rate or should I shop around further?

Q1: Easy. Remove AC power. Remove battery. Using a small screwdriver remove three screws in the battery compartment. Remove the metal plate that they were securing. There are two memory slots.
Q2: Use System Profiler to determine if one or two memory slots are currently in use before you open it up. Apple->About This MAC->More info...->Hardware->Memory

  • Problem installing 512mb RAM in Macbook Pro.

    Hi,
I hope someone can help me, I have checked other posts and nobody seems to have the exact problem that I have after installing RAM.
I installed a Crucial 512mb module in my Macbook Pro which already had a factory installed 512mb module in one slot.
First time the Mac started up ok but it did not recognise that extra RAM had been installed. I reseated the crucial module and the Mac would not start, just a pulsing power light and a black screen.
I installed one module at a time and the Mac booted correctly with both the Crucial Ram abd the RAM it shipped with.
When I put in both Modules it will not boot, I switched the slots and made sure that modules were inserted correctly but no joy.
Sorry for being so long winded!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thanks guys,
It just seems odd that both modules are working correctly when they are installed on their own and there is no boot when they are installed together.
As you stated it may be that the specs are different but I checked and all the info seems the same.
I'll just go ahead and send it back to Crucial for a replacement.
    Thanks again.
