Installing FCS Academic

I am about to install FCS academic. I have a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. I understand I may install my one copy into both.
Does it matter which one I do first?

as far as i know (i have academic also) your serial number is all you use to install, and the registration will allow two installations to be registered under your serial number. so you can install them in any order and it doesn't matter.

  • Uninstalling FCS Academic

I'd been using Final Cut Studio Academic for the past year on my 17" Mac Book Pro for a year. I used to have another Final Cut Studio Retail on a G5 which I sold a few months ago along with the installed FCS. So now I find out that FCS Academic is not upgradeable and I have to buy an entirely new FCS2 Academic, and since my academic credential is in doubt, I've decided to bite the bullet and get a new FCS2 Retail complete.
My question is: should I uninstall FCS1 Academic on my MBP before installing FCS2 Retail because a) the FCS2 is the retail version, b) the FCS2 is a stand-alone app and not an upgrade. And if the answer is yes, can someone point me to a foolproof uninstall process?
    Thanks.

has uninstall info and it should work on the academic also.
I am not sure I would uninstall the old software in case there are compatibility/conversion issues, some people mentioned those with some filters (I think) on another thread.
Sometimes there can be issues with having some of the old software (such as Compressor templates in one upgrade), but I usually make sure to have the old software available one way or another in case I need to use it again

  • FCS academic to FCS 2 regular version

I currently have the academic version of Final Cut Studio . I am about to purchase the regular version of FCS 2 . This will not be an upgrade since academic versions cannot be upgraded , it will be a brand new install of FCS 2. My question is , do I need to uninstall the academic version before I install FCS 2 ? If I do need to uninstall what is the cleanest way to do that ?

FCS 2 and a dual G5 runs fine. That graphics card should also be up to Motion 3 as well. My old 128mb card was limping with it, but the 256 card you have should make it fine.
IMHO, the clean install is by far the surest way to get to a happy system, and IMHO, it should be done periodically anyway. On a busy system, it sure makes things hum... We do it every semester at the school I teach at part time, and we have extremely stable setups there.

  • How can install FCS 2 on a MacBook Pro??

I'm trying to install FCS 2 on my MacBook Pro, and the system prompted me: "powerpc is not supported".
    My MacBook Pro is:
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50d)
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Somebody has a solution for this matter?
    Thanx a lot!

Install "Rosetta" from a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD first.
There are already several threads here about this.

  • How can you install FCS 3 on a computer that already has FCPX?

Ok so, I wiped my computer to install Lion, and then installed FCP X. I now want to install Final Cut Studio 3, but it won't let me install Final Cut, Motion, or Compressor (the other apps install fine). Presumably this is because I have downloaded the new versions of those respective apps from the app store.
I know you can install FCP X on a computer with FCS3 on it (and still be able to use both versions of FCP) but can you do the opposite? If so I haven't found out how (short of installing on a different disk/partition of course). I tried moving FCPX out of the applications folder (in hopes that it was as simple as the installer checks the apps folder first for another copy of Final Cut) but that simply moved an alias and as far as I can tell, FCPX cannot be moved out of the applications folder.
Anyone have any ideas or experienced something similar?
    Thanks!

Hey Brad thanks, but the link you provided is the opposite of what I need. That link is for if you want to install FCPX on a system with FCS 3 already on it. I have FCP X already installed and need to install FCS 3 on the same drive.
I cannot move the FCPX, Motion 5, or Compressor 4 applications to a new folder, because when I do it only moves an alias over for some reason (not the actual application).
@Ronnie yes I know I can install another copy of OSX on another drive/partition and install FCS 3 on that, but I am trying to not have to do that. Clearly FCPX and FCS 3 can exist on the same partition if you install FCS 3 first, so why can't I do it if I already have FCPX installed? Seems silly. I also do not want to have to reboot each time I want to go into FCS3, not to mention all of the disk space I would lose by installing the OS on one of my other internal drive (which currently are all filled with Media drives, so I would have to repartition a sizable chunk of one of them just for FC Studio).

  • Volume Issue after installing FCS 2

Hi I recently got Final Cut Studio 2, I previously had Final Cut Studio 1. I have two hdd in my PPC G5 tower and I wanted to install Final Cut Studio 2 on my secondary drive (which is running Tiger), b/c I was working on a project in FCP 5 on my primary HDD (running Leopard). All the programs worked on the secondary drive but when I restarted and booted up the primary drive I tried opening the programs from that HDD while running Leopard and all the programs won't launch.  I really can't afford to install FCS 2 on that drive B/C I do not want to replace FCP 5 at the moment.  Any suggestions on why this is happening?

YOu need to run the applications from the drive they are installed on.  If you installed FCS 2 on the TIGER drive, then you need to be booted from TIGER in order for it to work.

  • Issues installing FCS 2

I installed FCS 2 upgrade on my MBP and all went fine. Things work exactly as they should but when I went to install on my Power Mac G5, it installs fine but doesn't hold the information. I upgraded from FCP 5 to FCS 2 with the same serial numbers. It takes the SN off of the sheet from the FCS 2 box and opens the program but won't store it. Any ideas?

Are both computers connected to the same LAN and running (or attempting to run) FCP at the same time?
This might be the cause of your problem. While the license permits use on one desktop and one laptop owned by you, they may not be used simultaneously. If as above, both are on the same network there will be a serial number conflict.

  • Cannot install FCS 1 on new iMac

I just purchased a new quad core 27" iMac, but when I go to install FCS 1 (which is what i have for this serial number) it says that i "do not have the right hardware" to run it.
Im guessing because this is a new computer and FCS is old.
    1. So question one, is there a way to still get this to install?
    2. If not, I have a version of FCS 2 only on a separate serial number and it is installed on my MBP. If I install the same serial number copy on two computers on the same network will it allow both to run?
    Thanks

Final Cut Studio 1 was released at NAB2005 and was NOT a universal binary app.
It is only compatible with PPC, not an Intel Macs, such as your new iMac.
The first UB FCS was released about year later is a $49.95 cross grade
Luckily, you can upgrade to FCS3 for about $250.00 if you shop.

  • Where are installed FCS content files?

Okay, here is a really basic one for someone...
I installed FCS on an old machine, and left the content files on an external drive.
I installed the new FCS and I believe (if I read the instructions correctly) that new content files were stored on my internal drive by default. I don't think I selected a different location during the process.
My question is, where are all of the content files? I deleted the ones on the external drive. Just wanted to figure out if I had correctly installed the new ones... Thanks!

  • Installing FCS 3 (upgrade) on new MBP with Mountain Lion

    Hi:
I just bought a new MBP with Mountain Lion installed.  I have FCS3 upgrade, which I have now on my Mac Pro tower.  I originally bought FCP version 1 back in 2000, so I've had it for quite some time.
When I insert the FCS install DVD into the MBP, the disc spins up and then spins down.... and nothing happens.  Nothing opens, no dialogue box, not sign of any activity.
    What am I missing here?

Open the finder window and click on the DVD to open it up. Make sure you have the first DVD disk...
I have FCS 3 (FCP 7) running in ML with no problems. I did a clean install of ML first... and installed the FCS 3 upgrade after that... But, make sure you install QuickTime 7 before you install FCS 3... FCS 3 with turn QuickTime 7 into the Pro version.

I installed LiveType from FCS 2 too...

  • Is it possible to install FCS 5.1 (Academic) onto an newer iMac with Lion?

So i have Final Cut Studio 5.1 (Academic).  When I tried to install on my New Imac, it would not allow me to do so.  I've heard that the installer is PPC, but the software itself is Universal.  Is this true?  And if so, can someone let me know how I can install it??  Would really appreciate the love!

    Niel,
Thanks, so if I format it all as APM I can either clone OSX 10.4.11 which I have on my internal now. If I do a backup of my intel and Powerbook PC both of those will already have Tiger on them so do I need to do another Tiger install on each of those partitions?
Also by doing it this way I can't boot from a parition onto my intel can I?
Guess I'll have to weigh whose system is more important or just back up her drive as GUID on my computer and she can restore from it if she has too but won't be able to boot from it.
    S.

  • FCS academic pricing very enticing

Academic pricing on FCS is offered at the university where I work. I know that it's not upgradable. On the other hand, the full price for FCS is just too steep for the time being.
What I'd like to know is when the latest version of the FCS suite was released. My guess is that, if it was a relatively recent release I might be OK with purchasing the academic version and expecting it to be a current product for some time (a year or two?).
Can someone tell me when the latest FCS was released?
    Thank you much.

Thank you all for your knowledgeable responses. My university bookstore has FCS at a price that makes it attractive and somewhat lower than the academic price you mention. (However, next week I’ll check on whether it’s an older version that they might be trying unload from their inventory.)
Because I’m fairly new to higher end editing I know it will take me some time to feel comfortable editing with it. For now FCE seems to be doing all that I need.
I’m looking at FCS because part of a project that I hope to be doing will have clips recorded at 24fps in addition to 30fps. I’ve never used 24fps, but I read that FCE cannot edit it.
Once again, thanks for your help.

  • Installing FCS on more than one computer

Guys, I bought my Final Cut Studio 3 years ago and installed it onto my Power Mac G5.
But now I'm considering getting a Mac Book Pro in addtion to my G5. Will I be able to install my current Final Cut Studio onto the MBP aswell?

You'll find the answer in detail in the FCS Software License Agreement that is packed in the FCS box along with the disks and manuals.
In short, you can have FCS installed on one desktop and one laptop as long as you are the owner of both.

  • Already installed fcs and now want move parts to separate harddisk

hello. i have final cut studio already installed on my macbook pro. and now i want to free up some space on my harddisk. i know it is possible to move audiocontent to a separate harddisk. (and maybe other parts too?) but how do i do it (after fcs already installed)? is there some tutorial or explanation out there?
    pls help
    thanx
    teupaksa

You can move your FCS content to other drives very simply, below is an example for LiveType:
The LiveType library lives here: Hard Drive/Library/Application Support.
Copy the LiveType folder to your external drive and verify that is has copied correctly. (use "Get Info to compare)
    Delete the original folder.
On the external, make an alias of the LiveType folder and drag that back to Hard Drive/Library/Application Support.
Delete the alias on your external.
Content for Motion is found in: Users/Shared.
Content for Soundtrack Pro is found in: Hard Drive/Library/Audio/Apple Loops.
Content for DVD Studio Pro is found in: Hard Drive/Library/Application Support.
The above procedure can be used for those too.
