Installing from sources, not with pacman, problem!

Hi!
I wanna to install some software form sources, but after installing, programs doesn't work
some guys form irc sed, that my $PATH is wrong!
Here it is
/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/bin:/opt/gnome/bin:/opt/gnome/bin:/opt/gnome/bin:/opt/mozilla/bin:/opt/xfce4/bin
but i donno what its wrong

so at first i istalled graphical links, all i did was step-by-setp.

I found this in one of steps:
If you got a root access, log in as root and do "make install" in the same directory. If you are installing Links as an ordinary user, place the "links" executable file that was created by the "make" command into some suitable place possibly within your $PATH.
i'm root so i make install
make install
after his i ran in command shell
[lfx@localhost ~]# links
bash: links: command not found
[lfx@localhost ~]#
secondaly i wanted to install free pascal (it's for my state exams)
i downloaded sources, unpacked them and found install.sh, i ran it, installet without problems.
but command shell can't find it

Is installing from AUR similar to install from source?

I wonder if installing applications from AUR is similar to installing from source? Recently I have a problem where Eclipse SWT embeded browser is broken and 1 solution is installing firefox from source. So I wonder if installing from AUR is similar as installing from source?

You may also be interested in ABS. ABS is the official build system for Arch. Things supported by Developers go into Core and Extra, things supported by trusted users go into community. To get the packages for the extra (which is where firefox lives), install and run (as root) abs. Then the build stuff for firefox will live at /var/abs/extra/firefox

Looking at the PKGBUILD, that package does compile from source. Copy the directory to a user directory, enter that directory, and you can build your own copy with makepkg. You can then install the package with pacman -U
If you need to change something, change the files in your local copy.
This is not that tough, but it is most definitively not a project for a beginner. The documentation you need is out there, you will need to do your research.

You don't really delete app that way, that way to stop backup for that app in icloud.
You need to delete it from your home screen and then while it still will look like download from icloud - app will start fresh.
However if app uses any account sign in the stuff that is attached to sign in will come back, so if you do not want to you need to use
fresh account as well.

IWork 09 install from dmg not working

I installed iWork 09 from dmg, ran both the 9.1 and 9.2 updates. Doesn't work. When I try to open something, I get to the template chooser dialog box, then nothing opens when clicking either New Document (nothing happens) or an existing file (gives me an error message that says can't open). Any thoughts? I have not put in my serial # yet as nothing has prompted me to do so, presumably because of the free trial period. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have been installing numerous software packages in the past several days since acquiring this machine. These installs are of Apple software, Filemaker (Bento) and numerous third party installs that nearly all use the Apple installer. These installs have all gone without problem. Only the iWork install failed.
Update: Tried the installation on another machine - iMac, early 2008, 10.5.8) and not only did the install failed but the installer - not the log, but the installer application - reported that the media is bad. "The source media you are installing from is damaged. Try installing from a different copy of the source media or contact the manufacturer for a replacement."
So it appears that the computer is okay and it's the DVD that is bad. I'll try to run this down with Apple. (Though I bought online and don't see a way to contact them back through that channel, I'll keep looking.)

That's very strange. See if clearing the cache in Safari will make it work. I'll include the steps below. If that doesn't help, install a different browser, such as Opera, to see if that will print from pages that Safari won't. If it will, then something is wrong with Safari. If it doesn't print, then the web pages might have printing blocked. There are sites that are doing that for copyright reasons. Let me know what you find.
To clear the cache on Safari:
Open Settings.
Select Safari
Touch Clear Cache.
Select Clear.
Touch Clear Cookies.
Select Clear.
Touch Clear History.
Select Clear.

Install from jad not working

Hello,
Im having a problem installing my midlet from a jad file.
Ive put both the jad and jar in the same directory on our server
opened the browser on a phone and pointed the url to the jad file.
the browser wont install from the jad, but when i change the last character from 'd' to 'r' it installs
but is untrusted.
the midelt installs fine (and is trusted) if i install through nokia pc suit.
ive changed the url in the jad file to point to http://... (the absolute url basically)
is there anything esle i need to do?
the server is also set to recognise the jad and jar extensions,
any one with any ideas?
ps do i need to modify the manifest that net beans creates? if i added the code siging to the
manifest would this bypass the need for a jad?

What is the install process for Arch?

If you look into PKGBUILDs you see the good old './configure && make install' but by using pacman you don't have to worry about dependencies and if you remove the installed app, it gets removed all the way, no garbage left behind.

Macbook Pro install DVD disc not with computer

has anyone else been in this situation where the install discs were not in the box when you purchased your Macbook Pro?

Not had that problem myself but i know that sometimes in a store they take a DVD from a box if they are short on DVD's, that has happened here before and forgot to put a new one back. Just call them / get back to the store and ask for one and they should give you one right away or send it to you.

Cant uninstall application installed from source with pacman.

I made and installed the songbird-nightly program. It couldnt import a library, thus, wasnt even worth fully testing, unless I was going to manually get it to read all of my songs-- which I will not do.
Now, to get this off my computer, I tried several things, and then determined that I must not be using the right package name, so I ran:
pacman -Q | grep songbird
and it returned :
songbird-nightly 20080720-1
thus, I did:
pacman -Rsc songbird-nightly-20080720-1
and it returned:
error: 'songbird-nightly-20080720-1': could not find or read package
So, how do I get this poo off my computer.
Ok, its not poo. I love mozilla and virtually every program they make, but right now, its poo.

Problem when Installing from Existing Linux with Arch's Image

Hey!
I'm just getting started with Arch Linux. I made a 20GB unallocated space between my Win7 and Ubuntu partitions, created a new ext4 partition and I'm currently following this guide ("another method" section) in order to install my first attempt of Arch Linux.
I'm on a 64-bit Ubuntu and want to install a 64-bit Arch Linux too, so I'm using the image archlinux-2011.08.19-core-x86_64.iso and in the process of following the instructions in the mentioned guide, I replaced i686 by x86_64.
The problem comes up when I try to do the chrooting, where I get:
chroot: failed to run command `/bin/bash': No such file or directory
Any idea what could I be doing wrong?

Ok, I had just messed up when mounting the different directories. Sorry for the noise...
Anyway, found more errors when running:
aif -p interactive
about not finding /lib/modules/3.0.0-13-generic/modules.dep... what makes me think that this guide is intended to be followed when running also an Arch as the Existing Linux.
I think I'll just go with the flash drive option...

Install packages from a list with pacman

I want to install lots of packages all at once from a list I have in a textfile. Is there any way I can pipe the output of a textfile containing all the package names to pacman?
I tried the simple 'cat pkgs.txt | pacman -S' but that does not work.
Any ideas?

Basically, the construct $(command) takes the output of command and inserts it into the outside command...
for example,
if pidof xyz outputs 1248,
kill $(pidof xyz)
is identical to
kill 1248
There is a similar older construct that uses backtics (that's the one under the tilde, not the apostrophe), so that
kill `pidof xyz`
is identical to the above. The new construct $() is more useful because it's easier to nest multiple commands as in
command 1 $(command2 $(command 3))
if that ever needed to be done.
So what the original command did was insert the output of the 'cat pkg.txt' command in the commandline.

Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 install from Adobe Website. Installation problems.

Hello everyone.
I recently purchased a new computer. And i've been trying to get all my software onto the new computer. when the time came to install Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 I was informed that the website for activation of the product was down. After talking about the issue with an adobe chat agent I was informed that all the CS2 software was in the same boat, and that a dedicated web page provided versions of the software which did not require activation. (exclusively for people who owned the older software of course.) The site is here:

I was told to use the Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 to replace my version 1.5 and that I could use the provided serial numbers.
After downloading the software I discovered that it could not install. It accepted the serial number from the Adobe Site, but it ran into this error message:

Error 1311.Source File not found: C:\Users\"myname"\AppData\Local\Temp\Temp 1_PPRO_2.0_Ret-NH_UE (4).zip\Premiere Pro 2.0\Adobe Premiere Pro\Data1.cab. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.
Pressing Retry only reloaded the error message.
I dare not try to install my version of Adobe Premiere 1.5 again because I dont want it to crash and stall again. (that is what happened when I tried to instal my older software.)
If anyone knows how I can get my software up and running I would appreciate it. You could save me from having to go and buy the new Adobe Premiere which would cost me a tremendous amount of money. Thank you for you consideration.
Just so you know. I also owned Adobe Photoshop CS2. And the site worked for getting that software working. I get the annoying register you product message (when it loads) but other than that it appears to be working. I have no idea how to get the Adobe Premiere 2.0 to work. ("There is no Adobe Premiere 1.5 download on the site.)

I read your suggestion. I was afraid you might say something like that. I have a very expensive workstation computer. I can't risk messing with the drivers when they are all functioning properly. Its the Adobe Premiere that isn't functioning correctly. After talking with you, it has become readily clear that It might be worth it for me to invest in the new software. The older programs sometimes aren't functional in new hardware. I am quite sure that if there was a way to make it work, it would have been more readily apparent. based off everything I know now, I'd rather wait a little and get exactly what I need, than to rely on outdated and non-functional software.

Install old program version with pacman

Hi,
I'm new to Arch, but not to Linux. (2 years Kubuntu, a bit of Debian and Gentoo)
I would like to use kaffeine 0.8.5, because in 0.8.6 somehow the option for changing the record format is missing.
My question is if I can install kaffeine 0.8.5 using pacman, and then use the IgnorePkg option in pacman.conf.
I know that I could download 0.8.5 from the homepage, but I would prefer pacman if it is possible.

Is there no way to use this page as an repository and to isntall older versions by typing something like: "pacman -S oldpackages/kaffeine" ?
If I don't find a x.pkg.tar.gz file in the future, how do I create one for myself out of source?
Using "./configure", "make" and "make install" just installs, but you have to keep the directory for uninstalling. It is better to create a pkg.tar.gz, isn't it?
That would be similar to debs and Kubuntu... (it is better to use checkinstall there to create a deb, not "make install")
Using makepkg after "./configure" and "make" does not work, the PKGBUILD file is missing.
