Installing Full Retail Win 8 Pro on a Lenovo System supplied with Win 8 Standard/Core

Hello,
So I have a Thinkpad Twist that came with Windows 8, and I am trying to reinstall Windows 8 Pro on. I have a copy of Win 8 Pro OEM and I don't want to purchase the upgrade since I already have the full version. I would like to put this machine on a domain in my test lab, and only able to do that running Win 8 Pro.
So, I booted off a USB DVD and installed the OS, however once it was installed, I noticed it was still the standard Win 8. So I tried it again, with the same result. When I do the reinstall I am partitioning and formatting both drive on the Twist, so I'm not sure why it's reverting back to standard Win 8. Also when I install Win 8 Pro it never asks me for a key, so something is odd, and it's pulling that old standard Win 8 info from somewhere.
I went into the BIOS and noticed there are some security settings to avoid letting you install a new OS. So I disabled all of those, and tried the install again with the same result. I don't get it.
Does anyone know how to totally clean the disk(s) so that I can just do a clean install of Win 8 Pro? Or what settings I need to change in the BIOS to allow it to let me do a fresh install? I have been working on this for over 8 hours now.. starting to pull my hair out.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the input guys. I ended up finding the solution here..

I had to do an unattended install which supersedes the product key embedded in the BIOS flash memory.

  • Installing Full Retail Win 8 Pro on a Lenovo System supplied with Win 8 Standard/Core

If you are attempting to install a full retail (or similar) copy of Win 8 Pro on Lenovo system that came with standard Win 8 (also referred to as Win 8 Core) installed from the factory, you will run into an issue at install time.
By MS design default , full Win 8 Pro retail (etc) versions look for a key embedded in the BIOS (often referred to as an OA3 or OA3.0 key).  If  that key does not match the version of Win 8 you are trying to install, the install will fail without offering the option of entering the retail key that was supplied with your full retail (etc) Win 8 Pro.
Microsoft has issued a "FAST PUBLISH" support article on how to work  around this design approach. See
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2796988
Note that this workaround requires the creating and placing of a PID.txt  file by methods which are not entirely described in the support article, so be prepared to do some more digging for all the relevant information.

    I don't work for Lenovo

    Hi,
I have a Lenovo H520g essential desktop, which came with Windows 8 SL pre-installed. I bought my Lenovo on August 8 2013 and as of the November 2013 the machine was updated to Windows 8.1 Single Language.
Today, April 14th 2014, I bought Windows 8.1 Pro on a full retail DVD from a local physical Microsoft reseller. I have successfully installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my H520g. The installation run smooothly, no problems at all.
The steps I took were as follows:
    1)  Checked the UEFI BIOS to see if the DVD drive were included on the boot list and set it as the first boot device.
    2) Booted the computer with the Windows 8.1 pro DVD on the optical drive.
    3) Entered the Windows 8.1 License Key that came on the retail DVD.
    4) Erased all partitions from the HDD were Windows 8.1 SL were installed.
    5) Proceeded normally with the installation
Yesterday I made a phone call to the Microsoft support and they assured me that on all computers that come with Windows 8 SL pre-installed, it is possible to install Windows 8.1 Pro. The conditions are: 1) you must install the full retail version of Windows 8.1 Pro, not the OEM version; 2) you must do a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro, not the install that preserves files and applications.
    Cheers,

  • Can I install full retail Win 8 Pro on a Lenovo R500 with a Win 7 Pro preload?

Lenovo does not support Windows 8 on the R500. Can someone please tell me why.
When Windows 8 became available, I ran out and purchased a copy to install on my R500, foolishly thinking that Lenovo would support the upgrade on its older machines as it had previously, whenever a new release of Windows had become available in the past.
I was quite surprised to not find that my R500 was not supported.
So, will Windows 8 install, or will the installation fail? What functions would give me problems? Obviously, the touch screen functions won’t work, but can I attach an external touch screen?
Is the problem a hardware deficiency or is it a software deficiency?
So, do I have a useless Win 8 software box? I hope someone out there has an explanation.

    Hi Chuck,
R500 is a pretty old model and i guess Lenovo like other manufacturers cannot support all the old models for every new Windows version. So they have to draw a line somewhere and the R500 is too old.
Windows 8 should install fine, but you might find that there are some drivers which is not available for your computer. You might find that some features do not work because of missing drivers and software for Windows 8.
I never had a R500 and usually upgrade my computer every year so i cannot say for sure what might not be working. Some of the drivers might be available from other manufacturers like Intel.
I'm sure your Windows 8 won't be useless as you will probably buy a new computer in the close future since the R500 is pretty old. At least Windows 8 is pretty cheap compared to earlier upgrades from Microsoft. The Windows 8 compatibility list from Lenovo been available for pretty long and the R500 never been listed.

  • OEM Pro, then upgrade or install Full Retail Ultimate 7 directly. W530.

Hi.  I've calmed down a bit after the excitement of my first computer upgrade in a few years (went from T61p to W530).  Pretty happy with the W530.  In fact, very happy.  Wish Lenovo would have as much published info about the W530 as was offered for the T61p.  I think that info enhances the value of Lenovo's user's experience. Makes Lenovo a better value proposition.  Anyway...
I have the (legitmate) OEM Windows 7/64 Pro recovery disks for my W530.   I want Ultimate (because of Bitlocker, and a few other features that are nice).   I have the UItimate Install disks (w/ legitimate key), but they arent' Lenovo OEM disks.  Ideally, I'd  install the OEM version (which has all the drivers installed) of Pro, then would use the Ultimate disks to upgrade.   If that works, that's what I'll do.  Alternately, I could just load Ultimate directly, then load update manager 5, and update my drivers and such.
The question is: is it ok (or even better) to load Ultimate directly, without the Lenovo OEM stuff?  Pluses, minuses?
If I can't use the full version key of ultimate to do an upgrade, I guess I can troll eBay for an upgrade key.  Can OEM versions be upgraded?
If it matters, the install is going onto a Samsung 850 Pro 500Gb SSD.
    Thanks!

If you're not going to use the Lenovo-provided 3rd-party software products (which mostly are lite or trial versions that you need to pay for anyway if you really want to use them fully-featured), or if you already have your own collection of 3rd-party products (both free and non-free) that you would be installing after-the-fact and using anyway on your new W530 no matter how you got whichever Windows version installed (and thus you'd probably be UNINSTALLING any "bloatware" from your delivered W530 in any case), just do what you want if you have a retail Ultimate and you want to use it.
As a 2-year owner of a W530 (243852U, Win7 Pro x64, K1000M, 8GB memory) who 1 year ago replaced the original 500GB spinner with a 512GB Samsung 840 Pro and reinstalled "from scratch" using a retail Windows Pro x64 installation DVD rather than even considering using Lenovo's recovery media (which I never even kept in the first place!), my own feeling is that creating a "pure" self-installed Windows is amost always the way to start if you have a day or two... assuming you have a retail Windows installation DVD and your own collection of 3rd-party software products which characterize any machine setup that you build.
I already maintain my own manually maintained collection of latest up-to-date drivers and Lenovo system products for the W530, as I am periodically checking for any recent updates on their W530 driver download site and maintain my own local folder of all of these installer files anyway so using them all if I had to start over from scratch is not an issue. Actually, I also use more recent versions of drivers from Intel and nVidia than Lenovo provides.
In actuality, the ONLY piece of Lenovo-provided software I have SOMETIMES used is System Update installed on my machine.  This is actually a theoretically automated and accurate way of getting all latest drivers and other software needed by your own particular machine which have not already been obtained through standard Windows Updates anyway.  But in my experience the database referenced by System Update is not always up-to-date, and often lags somewhat from the actual W530 download site.
Bottom line: I could have my W530 totally devoid of ANY Lenovo-provided system utilities and it would not affect me, but then that's just me.  I certainly have not used ANY of the Lenovo-provided 3rd-party software products, as I have my own collection of fully-licensed products that mostly all get installed onto all of my machines (desktop or laptop).
Bottom bottom line: swapping a hard drive spinner for an SSD doesn't normally justify reinstalling Windows.  There's no licensing reason to reinstall (i.e. a new hard drive/SSD is an allowable upgrade to continue using the same instlaled Windows with the same license key).  So you can just use one of many products to "clone" your existing partition(s) to your new drive (e.g. Macrium Reflect, Minitool Partition Wizard, even the Samsung-provided cloninig software, etc.).  Or, if both drives aren't available simultaneously you can just do a 2-step equivalent, by taking a "system image backup" of the existing environment out to an external USB 3.0 backup drive, then swap internal drives, and then do a "system image restore" from the external backup drive to the newly installed internal hard drive.  Of course if you really wanted a new version of Windows (e.g. Ultimate, in your case), then a reinstall from scratch is the course you must take since I don't think OEM licenses for a given Windows can be upgraded (but I may be wrong).
NOTE 1: even if you were to just clone your current spinner-based Windows onto the SSD, avoiding the Ultimate install for now, you'd still want to run Samsung Magician to "optimize/tweak" Windows for SSD performance since it had originally been installed as intended for spinner performance. There are some additional tweaks you should probably look at to get the most out of SSD.  And Samsung Magician provides (a) rapid mode, and (b) over-provisioning, for still more SSD performance.
NOTE 2: Lenovo also provides a "driver grabber/updater" set of utilities for System Admins, which is like System Update but more under your control and is intended to maintain a folder of drivers/utilities (exactly as I do myself manually, without any assistance from the Lenovo software).  But again, it's based on the same database that System Update works off of, so even it can lag behind what's actually available directly on the Lenovo W530 driver download site.
Sorry if this is providing unnecessary information to you.  But I've gone through several such spinner->SSD upgrades, or in the case of several M93p desktop machine configurations for friends and family, have ADD'ed an SSD as a second drive (to become the primary boot/system drive), retaining the original Lenovo-provided spinner but repurposing it to become a secondary data drive.
In the case of these M93p situations, I opted to "quickly and easily just clone" the existing Lenovo installed Win7 from spinner to SSD, and avoid having to reinstall Windows from scratch onto the SSD (also avoiding Windows and driver updates, reinstall of 3rd-party software and Windows customizations, etc.).  In the case of my own W530, I instead opted to reinstall from scratch onto the newly installed SSD, using the opportunity of the hardware upgrade to truly "build my own Windows" and not have any leftover pieces from Lenovo other than what I chose to manually reinstall myself.

  • Purchased full retail Logic Pro 8; can't get rid of academic serial number

I had originally purchased the *Academic version*, entered the serial number, but *aborted the install* without going beyond entering the serial number when I found out from this forum that I would never be able to upgrade the software unless I paid the extra $50 now for the Full Retail version.
I *bought the full retail version* $499 (returning the not-installed academic program $449,) proceeded with the >4 hour install, only to find that *I cannot update the serial number* to the full retail serial number. I tried uninstalling using appzapper, it only deleted 384MB of the 40 GB install, and then it took the same >4 hours to re-install - still with no chance to enter the full retail serial number.
Does anyone know how to update Logic Pro 8's serial number or to do a *re-install that will force me to re-enter the serial number*?
    --R

The program is exactly the same, it's only the serial number that you need to dump. So no need to uninstall or reinstall Logic, just leave it as it is. App Zapper won't find the file that contains the serial number, I've checked. Hence your problem.
Very easy fix. Go to Users/YOUR USER/Library/Preferences/Logic. Inside that folder will be 'com.apple.logic.pro' and 'com.apple.logic.pro.cs'. I can't remember which is the serial, but just dump both, start Logic, and it will ask for your serial again. Put it in, and it will create a new one of those with your correct serial. And you're done.
NOTE - Inside the Preferences folder mentioned above, there may be some preference files with the same names, but those aren't the ones you're looking for. You need to look *inside the LOGIC FOLDER that is contained within the Preferences folder mentioned above*. Others have made this mistake.
    Good Luck!

  • After Win 8.1 update - Lenovo System Update defective (doesn't find updates any more)

Lenovo System Update tells me that all is up to date!
I searched at Lenovo for new drivers for windows 8.1
They asked me exactly what notebook I use. For the x1 carbone 3460-4LG (checked 3 times because I couldn't believe it) they discribed my computer as:
    i7-3667U(3.2GHz), 4GB RAM, 256GB Solid State Drive, 14in 1600x900 LCD, Intel HD Graphics, Intel 802.11agn wireless, WWAN, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure Chip, 4c Li-Ion, Win8 Pro 64.
My notebook has 8GB RAM, 180GB SSD and (as I believe) no carbone x1 has 1GB Ethernet, because it has no network connector at all!
So first question: can I believe the suggestions of lenovo for new drivers?
There are several drivers released in October 2013 that I surely do not have already installed.
That means, Lenovo System Update doesn't work any more, without error message!
Question two: Has Lenovo a solution to repair their defective updater? Or will they release a solution?
    Very disappointed regards.
    Alex

Another Workaroung wich could help is the Tool DriverEasy. It does scan yours system and shows you all missing Driver. The missing driver can be downloaded or directly installed.
For me it found every missing Driver on different Lenovo Modells. The only thing to use it as Full Service, is you have to buy it for i think about 30 $.

  • I have a laptop running Win 7 Pro, can I setup a dualboot with Win XP

My laptop is running Win 7 Pro (32-bit) but I have a Iomega Zip 100 drive which has not been supported since Win XP. I have numerous discs with content I would like to access and put onto CD. Can I set up a dualboot system with Win 7 and Win XP without

The first thing you need to do is verify that there are Windows XP chipset and device drivers for your laptop. If there are none then XP may not function properly, no mouse, keyboard, video, USB ports may no work and more.
If there are drivers then read the following:

  • What is the process to upgrade at full retail, switch SIM cards, and keep old plan with unlimited data feature

I'm on a really old plan...America's Choice Family Share 500, Free N&W, with 2 lines, and each line has the unlimited data feature on the line.
Neither line has a texting package.
I currently have a Droid Bionic (large SIM card) & want to get a Droid Turbo (small SIM card).  It is literally cheaper for me to pay full retail for a phone (actually 2 phones) than switch to a "More Everything" plan because my plan is so old.  Across the two lines, we probably only use 3-5 GB/mo, so we aren't 'heavy' data users, but we aren't using 1-2GB/mo either.
I went into a VZW Corporate store, and they said I should be able to keep my plan with unlimited data if I pay full retail, but the sales person said their system has been knocking off unlimited data for other customers, even for something as small as a SIM card change.
I tried upgrading on verizonwireless.com, and the system tried to kick me out of my America's Choice Family Share 500 plan.
What is the process to get a new phone, pay ~$600 for it, get the new SIM card assigned to the account, and keep my calling plan with unlimited data?
(I also have the option to turn on & off Mobile Hot-Spot for $30/mo at will...but probably only have it active for 1 week a year, if that)
    Thanks!

Just log into your my verizon and order a phone at the full retail price. When you add the phone to the cart you choose 2 yr price, edge or full and then hit add. You will have to choose a plan but that plan does not go into effect since you are buying a phone out of contract, it is just part of the process. You then will not lose the data

  • Can anybody Assist, please ? Issue with running Prem Pro 1.5 on 'new' pc with Win XP Pro

After some years of faithful service my PC died and I am not able to get Premiere Pro 1.5 to work on the new PC. I had several HDD with my video files on and the C: drive died. I have reinstalled the original drives so all my files are recovered and I can see/open them in Premiere BUT I cannot setup to capture anything.
System is Win XP Pro, Pentium Dual core, 2.7GHz, 2Mb RAM, Capture device is Canopus with DV Storm 2 drivers, Sony DR1000 deck connected by firewire.
When I go to capture settings there is an IEEE1394 option and DV Capture. If I select Canopus the PD INSTANTLY reboots. I don't know where to start looking for the issue . . . is anybody able to help ?
    Would be much appreciated . . .

    Ian
Did you replace the whole PC or just the boot drive?
I may be totally wrong but I had a Storm card years ago and it worked with Premiere up to the old verions 6 or 6.5, Premiere 6.5 is when it  became realtime and hence the Storm card was no longer necessary for anything other than faster mpeg encoding
I seem to remember that Canopus introduced Lets Edit which then became Edius at this time and they dropped bundling Abobe products so I am surprized that Premiere Pro 1.5 worked with the Storm
If the Storm cannot be got to work and you do not have a firewire port on the Mobo go to your local PC component supplier and obtain a firewire PCI card with Texas chipset and install it. the card should cost about $20-$30.  The Storms worked a treat but the Mobo had to be right and it did not like certain chipsets on the boards, not only that the installation process was a total pain

  • Installed new HD now all i see is system folder with flashing ?

i just installed a new HD on my clamshell last night. Everything went smoothly and it was easier than I had imagined. After I had everything put back together I tried starting it up and then put in my OS X update discs. But all I am seeing is the blank screen with the system folder and flashing question mark. I tried pressing C to boot the CD but nothing happened. These aren't the original installation CD's as I bought the ibook second hand on ebay. On the CD's it says "OS X Updates 10.3.6 - 10.3.9 Konfabulator - Widgets" I'm not sure if these are even meant to be installation discs. I'm thinking that my option is to buy new discs and start that, but if there is a way to get these to work I'd rather do that. I was running Panther before this mix up, and I'm wondering if I should run panther again or if I should upgrade to Tiger or Leopard (although I think that my computer isn't compatible for Leopard)
Any help would be appreciated, I can't seem to find any info anywhere else on this.

You cannot install OS X to a blank hard drive from an upgrade installer disc. You need the fully bootable installer disc such as the retail Panther installer or the original OS X installer discs used to install the version of OS X that you upgraded with the upgrade disc. The disc you apparently used is not an OS X installer disc.
If you have Panther installer discs they should have a black label with a large gray "X". There are three discs in the set.
Before you will be able to install any operating system on your new drive you will first need to prepare the drive:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Note that some options referred to above may not be present in Jaguar or Panther. Simply ignore them.

Lenovo Thinkpad W500, Intel (R), Windows 7, SP1, latest updates as of Oct 15
    (1) Checked Setting,  set to automatic update whenever, even changed to never update, rebooted the OS and changed back to automatic update and rebooted the OS.
    (2) Stopped Windows Update Services, renamed SoftwareDistribution folder and started the window update services and rebooted.
    (3) Ran MS FIXIT
    (4) Ran System File checker Scan (sfc /scannow)
    (5) Ran CHKDSK /F
    (6) Installed "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" drivers from Lenovo site
    (7) Ran Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB971033)
None of the above possible recommended solutions were able to fix the issue yet and now I am getting a message your Window is Not Genuine!
Any help or guidance is appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The Lenovo System Update installed the "Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver 8.9.2.1002" right before the Windows Upgrade got broken. So in the Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, I choose Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller, on the Driver Tab, I choose the option "Roll Back Driver" and after rolling back the driver and restarting the OS, now Windows Update is working like a Champ!
    The End!

    Hi,
you have to install at least Logic Pro 7.2 to be compatible with ProTools 7 at all, this version is not backwards compatible with ProTools 6.

Logic Pro 7.1.1 is compatible with ProTools 6, but not 7.

I have Win 2008 configured as RRAS- VPN server, with win 7/8 VPN clients.
half of these client machines are also running "Cisco VPN client 5.0.07.0440"
all win 7 machines works fine however most of Win 8 will not connect to windows VPN, if they also have Cisco VPN client 5.0.07.0440 intsalled.
    Any suggestion.
    Thanks

    Workaround to this problem is:
1)- Unintsall Cisco VPN client from win 8
    2)- reset IP stack

  • I have a MacBook Pro Late 2011 and I'm wondering if I install Windows 7 Ultimate to this MacBook Pro with this Full Retail Version. And if so, which bit to use either 32-bit or 64-bit since I have both disks.

I have a MacBook Pro Late 2011 and I'm wondering if I install Windows 7 Ultimate to this MacBook Pro with this Full Retail Version. And if so, which bit to use either 32-bit or 64-bit since I have both disks.

    64 bit.
32 bit won't use all your computer's ram.
64 bit allows you to run 32 bit programs
    Your computer is 64 bit
    New programs use 64 bit.
There is no reason to use the 32 bit version of Windows.
