Installing Fusion3 and Windows 7 on external drive

Hello and Help!
I'm taking delivery on an iMac 27", 2.8 quad core, 8GB RAM and with 1TB HDD. I currently have Boot Camp on my MBP running Windows XPP. I invested in VMware Fusion3 and now run Boot Camp within OSX and really like it.
With the new iMac coming, someone suggested that I install Fusion3 and Windows, (which will be Windows 7) on a separate external HDD. First, I assume it's possible, but I have no clue as to how. Do I run Boot Camp with the external HDD mounted and path Windows 7 to it? And then do I install Fusion 3 in OSX or the external drive. Installing in OSX is easy since I've already done it, but I don't know about installing it on an external drive.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Ron

  • Mac and windows sharing external drive on mac.

I am trying to access my external drive on my mac from my pc. Sharing is enabled but the drive doesn't show up. what are the options to do this? I have tried to find it by name command line in windows but no go. I also tried to mount it to the pc but no good the drive mounts but will not asign a drive letter and is not a readable format for XPpro.... Doh!
    Thanks
    Mark

If you want the drive to be readable on both peecee and Mac, the drive should be formatted as a FAT32 volume which OSX can read and write to or as a NTFS volume which the Mac can read but not write to.
    That is not correct.
Windoze does not recognize any Mac formats.
That's true, but Windows doesn't need to read Mac formats to access a network disk. The disk formatting is handled by the computer directly connected to the disk (which is the Mac). The network file access does not contain any disk formatting information and therefore it doesn't matter what format is used on the disk.
You can use SharePoints to make that drive visible to non-Admin users.

Paragraphs help the reader, just saying.
What are you actually trying to do? Why do you need "DVD size" folders if you're creatng an Archive on an external hard drive?
Also, I understand burning folders instead of individual photos or albums gives you more space on a DVD.
It makes no difference at all.
How can I keep the captions on my photos (not events) when I print or transfer to a new folder?
You can export while writing the metadata to the file in most cases.
Tne only way I know is to copy photos from the Windows to folders on my HD, then copy and paste photos or albums or events to HD, then create a new folder and fill it to the appropriate DVD size.
HD? Another HD? You use HD there in a way that makes no sense. What's the point of 'DVD size'?
I also thought I should download future photos to my Canon programming that comes with EOS cameras and edit and then decide which photos to save to iPhoto library and which to save only to my archival HD?
Does this have any relation to the previous questions? You know you can delete from iPhoto, right?
You're somewhat confused and you need to
    1. Decide what exactly you want to do
    2. Then go about it.
If I understand you correctly - and there's no guarantee that I do -  the easiest thing is to bring all your Photos into iPhoto and do everything from there.
You can have an archive on an external disk, you can sort and select and edit with or via iPhoto

  • Preparation for installing bootcamp and windows 7, and in the absence of a DVD drive

I am not sure that I submitted this with the right boxes ticked, so i am re submitting it!
In preparation for installing bootcamp and windows 7, and in the absence of a DVD drive on my MacBook Air, before starting, can I partition my external drive (for use with my Mac) to have an ISO image file location for Windows downloads?

  • Installed GoFlex 1.5 TB external drive on my iMac running OS X 10.7.4 and error says Time Machine can't create a backup folder.   Any solutions?

Installed GoFlex 1.5 TB external drive on my iMac running OS X 10.7.4 and error says Time Machine can't create a backup folder.   Any solutions?

Well, to unmount the drive, you can use the Terminal application.
Start in Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
When the Terminal window opens, type - without the quotes and with the space at the end - this:
    "diskutil unmount "
Then drag the icon of the unmounted drive from the desktop into the Terminal window - the drive location will be added to the end of the command above.  It should look something like this:
    diskutil unmount /Volumes/volumename
    Then press enter (return).
That should unmount the drive. Now you can try the Time Machine process again with perhaps a different interconnect cable for the GoFlex.

  • On a MacBook Pro - windows on external drive?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new to Macs. Looking to buy a MacBook Pro 17 inch, and I am wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to load windows on an extermal disk, firewire 800 or E-sata off an express 34 card?
If this isn't possible, can OS X be loaded on external drives?
I'd rather load windows on external drive than OS X.
    Thanks,
    Chris

You'll need to repair or replace your SuperDrive as that is the only way Windows can be installed (downloading is what you do with files on the Internet). And it must be the built-in SuperDrive. The external one Apple sells for the MacBook Air and 2012 iMac will not work.

  • Windows on external drive

recently I have stumbled upon installing 10.7 lion on external drive:
+Playing with partitions is not for the faint of heart. Installing OS X Lion to a USB drive or external hard drive is a safer but likely slower option.+
Q1: Is it possible to do so with windows?
I would like to install windows on external drive and use it only when needed (hardly ever, but sometimes I have to)
    virtualization is not fast enough for me :{
I have a MacBook Air and SuperDrive, however when I plug superdrive there is no place for external drive,
Q2: Unless I use some kind of usb hub?
Q3: Will it work? Have anyone tried this?

    Hi,
OSX could be installed and run from external harddisk for quite some time.
Sadly, Microsoft choosed to not allow Windows to be installed and run from external harddisk.
However, you can find instructions on how-to do this nonetheless on the internet.
A good USB-hub (preferably one that is self-powered and not USB-powered) will let you use both the Superdrive and an external harddisk at the same time.

  • I want to install mountain Lion on an external drive without uninstalling Maverick from my computer

When I want to get mountain Lion, apple store telles me that I have Maverick installed. How can I charge the M Lion version to install on an external drive?

You would need to download a copy from the Mac App Store or already have a copy of the installer. Then you can make a bootable USB drive using DiskMaker X (http://liondiskmaker.com).   Once you created the USB disk, you can boot from that and install Mt Lion on the external drive.

  • Can I install on MainStage 2 on external drive?

    Hello,
I have a 2010 MacBook Air running Lion. I have little room left on the internal drive, but I've been able to run other apps and files from my external drive.
Is there any way I can download and install MainStage 2 to my external drive? There is not enough room on the internal drive to even do the basic 4G download of MainStage 2 and essential content.
    Thanks,

  • Is there a way to install the server on an external drive connected to an airport extreme?

Is there a way to install the server on an external drive connected to an airport extreme?

If you want a small (comparatively) cheap server along the lines of the AirPort Extreme the nearest thing is a Mac mini.
You can use the AirPort Extreme as a very basic file server, and (unofficially) a Time Machine server. A Time Capsule has a built-in hard disk and officially supports being a Time Machine server.

  • Installing OS 9 on the external drive ?

    First some background info:
I bought an external HD (the OWC Neptune FireWire Storage Solution 320 GB).
Then I went from OS 9.0.4 to OS 9.22 over a period of 2 weeks.
I downloaded OS 9.1, used it for a few days, checked if everything is OK, then I donwloaded OS 9.2 : Same thing : used it for a few days, checked if everything is OK, then I donwloaded OS 9.2.2 which I use now for over a week.
I also upgraded the firmware, drivers.
Now, I just received the Mac OS X tiger disc. My understanding is that by default OS X installs on top of OS 9 (single partition). I can also have a separate partition and I like the advantages of this.
    So the Question is :
    1) Since I have an external drive, I'm thinking of installing OS 9 on the external drive, and Tiger on the internal HD. Can I do that ? (I know I can't do the opposite, nor do I want to).
    2) Also can I still do a single partition (Tiger on top of OS 9) AND installing OS 9 on the external drive ? (I know I will have two OS 9 in this case, one on the HD and one on the external drive, but it is just for a small period of time, then I will get rid of one).
This way I can use OS 9 if something goes wrong in the installation.
If both solutions are possible Is there any advantage/disavantage from one option over the other ?
Keeping in mind I don't want to much hassle. This is a big step for me (anxious, depression, please hold my hand; I'm scared !)

You're a bit confused. You can install OS X on the same partition/volume as OS 9 without disrupting anything.
Also can I still do a single partition (Tiger on top of OS 9) AND installing OS 9 on the external drive?
Yes, but IMHO, there's a better way. First, partition the external HD into several partitions, at least one of 10 GB. Then, drop the OS 9 volume onto that partition. Then, boot with the Tiger disk, erase and partition the internal HD, making one at 10 GB. Then install OS X onto the other partition. When done just drop the external volume containing OS 9 onto the 10 GB partition. Then, use something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. and clone the Tiger volume onto the external's other partiton as your bootable backup. That allows you to have the OSs separated and also to use either OS 9 as the classic version while running OS X.
Or, you can just install OS X onto the same HD as OS 9 and they'll live happily side by side. I find having them on separate volumes the better option.

My iTunes library exists on the external drive under /itunes...

what do i need to do ?
I have found multitude of articles about moving itunes to external drive or other similar things but I don't want to move itunes from the external drive, just change mini mac machines and have everything in itunes the same..
    Thanks

I had already tried that one and got this...
below is screen shot of what is on the new mac mini
and what is on the external drive now connected to the new mac mini..
There are no media files on the mac mini just the library files and on external just media files..
Do I need to copy anything over from the old mac mini ? xml files ? .. the itunes folder on old mini is about 840mb in size which looks to have artwork ect ? .. I am fairly computer literate, but this one has me stumped.. ?

  • Can I run a windows software program taht is on a CD on my macbook pro after I install bootcamp and windows xp home?

Can I run a windows software program that is on a CD on my macbook pro after I install bootcamp and windows xp home?

    genepaquin,
the last MacBook Pros that supported installing Windows XP in a Boot Camp partition are the Mid 2010 models. If your MacBook Pro is newer than that, and you don’t have a newer version of Windows to install into a Boot Camp partition on your MacBook Pro, then you might consider an alternative such as running Windows with the help of programs such as VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop rather than through Boot Camp.
