Installing iDVD 8

Just tried to install iDVD 7 three times. No prior installation of IDVD 6. iDVD 7 Appeared to install successfully, but won't launch either by clicking on the icon or clicking on open in a window. Other iLife programs will launch. What gives?

See iDVD '08: The application may unexpectedly quit when opened for the first time at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306290

Can I install iDVD (only) from an iLife 11 CD on a new (late 2011) on-line MacBook Pro/Lion purchase that no longer included it?

Purchasing iLife 11 on disk is an easy thing to do. ILife 11 will include iDVD.
If you have iDVD on another Macintosh you can transfer it to your new computer. That procedure has been discussed here many times, if you do a search you will find that procedure.

  • How can I uninstall iDVD '08 and install iDVD '06?

There's a reported bug among iDVD '08 users where burning
large projects are resulting in audio synch problems near the
    end of the burned DVD.
In other words, the audio slowly goes out of synch towards the
    end of burned projects.
This is a problem inherent with 'DVD '08.
I tried uninstalling iDVD '08 and replacing with '06 but it doesn't
work. You try that and iDVD will not launch at all.
Even tried to partition my drive and install iLife '06 to the partition
but the system will not let me.
Anyone have a solution how to completely uninstall iLife '08
    components and install iLife '06?
    Thanks

I upgraded to iLife 08 from 06 (bad move). I couldn't install iMovie because my Mac is too old (must be Intel-based or comparable). iDVD didn't work--the document window was always black, even with a theme selected. The Virtual Band function in GarageBand did nothing whatsoever. I trashed the '08 applications, moved all Preferences files to my desktop, reinstalled iLife '06. Now, iDVD won't launch--just flashes the menu bar and exits back to the Finder. So, I have several DVD projects on my system that I cannot finish because I cannot reinstall iLife '06 (like the originator of this problem, "How can I uninstall iDVD '08 and install iDVD '06?") I hope someone has an answer as this is frustrating and costly to my small business.

  • Installed iDVD and now I have lost iPhoto

I have an iMac 27" late 2013. I was wanting to burn some dvd's and installed iDVD, while working with iDVD I received a notice that iPhoto could not be opened because it may be damaged or incomplete...Can I get it back???

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • Installing iDVD from a system restore disk

    Hello all-
I posted a question elsewhere looking at this problem from another angle, but I think this might be the way I want to go about it, if I can.
To make a long story short (or at least try): I just bought a six-month-old Power Mac G5 on eBay. I am planning on moving all my apps and data over from my old computer, a G4. The system restore disks came will put OS 10.3.5 on the G5. The G5 has a built-in DVD burner, and thus also came with iDVD. The G4 does not have a DVD burner, and thus did not come with iDVD.
I have a commercial version of OS X 10.4, and what I'd ideally like to do is make a totally fresh and clean install of 10.4 onto the G5, and then use the setup assistant to import all my stuff from the G4 over. However, my fear would be that in doing so I would lose iDVD. Is there any way to install iDVD from the install disks that come with the G5 without installing OS X?
    Thanks in advance,
    jf

Put your install disc inside your PC and right click and choose Show Package Contents on the main installer - then have a look in the sub folders for the iDVD package - it should be in there - this should work again once you re-install your machine.

  • How to install iDVD on iMac

I have a MacBook with OS X Lion on it and have iDVD running on it ever since I purchased it in 2009. Recently I bought a 27" iMac with 1TB HD and OS X Lion. I just realised today that it does not have iDVD installed on it and I am quite used to using iDVD to burn all the home videos I make using iMovie. I know that I can use iMovie to burn those movies to disc but I am too used to using iDVD and was wondering how can I get it installed on the iMac?
    1. Can't find it through App Store - I am told Apple does not support it any longer
    2. Can't find it anywhere on the web where I can pay and get it
    3. Will I be able to install it on the iMac from the MacBook Other Applications Install Disc that came with the MacBook?

Your MacBook came with disks for installing the system and bundled software.  You can use the bundled software disk to install iDVD onto your new iMac.
It should looks like one of these, possible like the one for the MacBook Pro in the upper right hand corner of the screenshot:
If you don't have those disks you can purchase the iLife 11 disk from the online Apple Store while supplies last. It will have the latest versons of both iDVD and iWeb, both of which have been discontinued by Apple.

  • Installing iDVD on a new MacBook Pro

I was very disappointed to learn that my new MacBook Pro did not come with iDVD.  So, if I insert my iLife '11 disk, will I have the opportunity to only install iDVD?  I certianly don't want to do anything that would mess up the existing iLife applications that came pre-installed on my computer.
    Thanks, Robert

Let Apple know, they do read feedback.

Don't worry, iDVD is tested to work with the latest iLife apps.

  • Installing iDVD on Mavericks

    Dear Apple Forum Members,
Apologies if this is a rather well-explored subject already, but I would like some very specific advice on installing iDVD on to a MacBook Pro with retina display running Mavericks.
I gather from the many topics and posts on this subject that Apple have decided to discontinue iDVD on the basis that most data sharing in the future will be via the cloud rather than optical disks. This seems to have stranded many people like me who are still actively sharing content by disk, a big shame and far too pre-emptive in my opinion.
So, I am faced with the prospect of obtaining a copy of iDVD from a previous iLife installation disk...
Having obtained such an installation disk (Install DVD Version 11, 2Z691-6677-A),  I am now attempting to install just iDVD (if it also installs iWeb, that would be fine too). I run the installer as far as choosing a "Custom Installation", and then I am presented with the following dialogue:
I am afraid to proceed with the installation by hitting "Install" as I do not want my current version of iPhoto to be downgraded and I cannot "untick" the entry in the list as it is greyed out. I am also afraid that the iLife Support Files may be changed to a previous version.
Does anyone have experience of such an install, or can anyone suggest a better way to proceed?
Appreciate any help or advice on this subject.
    Current software versions:
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.5
    iMovie 10.0.5
    iPhoto 9.5.1
    GarageBand 10.0.2
Laptop is a MacBook Pro with Retina display, 2.3GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, and 256GB Solid State drive
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jon

    Thanks once again, OT.
Have run the install process following your advice and I'm now the proud owner of iDVD and iWeb as a result!
I'm also up to speed now on the .app files in the Applications folder, and it was a very good thing that I followed your advice to make a backup of iPhoto, as the installer destroyed the current iPhoto, leaving me with a non-executable file of just 20MB.
However, I was able to restore the backup version of iPhoto without any difficulty.
So, problem solved...thanks a million for your time!
    Jon

  • I can't open iPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete? It started after I installed iDvd so I uninstalled it. No change - what do I try next?

I can't open iPhoto anymore because "it may be damaged or incomplete"? I'd been making folders of my albums & videos & moving them to an external hard drive. I have years of photo's & video still on iPhoto that I had not moved to the external hard drive yet. This problem started after I installed iDvd so I uninstalled it. Also tried to download older iPhoto updates to see if that would resolve the problem. No change - what do I try next?

    1. Back up:
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
    2. Reinstall:
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I want to install idvd 6 from an install disc.  I have idvd 7 already installed.  It will not let me because of the later installed version.  Is there a way to install the earlier version?

Delete of hide the existing iDVD application T and all files with "iDVD" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iDVD from the disk it came on originally.

  • Unable to install iDVD

I have been trying for the last couple of weeks to install iDVD. I have iLife 4 and have reinstalled it many times. It is when it is finished there is no iDVD. I have tried Pacifist and still can't find iDVD. I am using a iBook G4, 933 mhz. I don't have a super drive but do have a Lacie firewire external DVD burner. The system recognizes it and says it can burn DVD's. Any help would be appreciated.

Try deleting all of the files with iDVD in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Be sure to run the latest updates followed by a repair of disk permissions afterward.

  • Installing iDVD from a disk

    Hi all,
I recently put together a startup drive with OSX Lion. I wanted to be able to install iDVD with the rest of the iLife softwares and it is no longer available. I saw a suggestion in these forums to purchase an iLife '11 install disk and install iDVD with that. I purchased the disk on Amazon and am getting this error message:
Not sure what to make of this. Could it be that iDVD cannot be installed onto a disk running OS 10.7.4?
It was suggested to me to try creating a disk image of the the install disk with disk utility and using that to install. I tried creating a new disk image with settings 'image format: compressed' and 'encryption: none' and got this error toward the end of the process after two tries:
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Dennis

    Hi Sig,
After talking with Apple Support that seems to be the consensus. They are expediting me another install disk.
    Thanks.

  • Installed iDVD from iLife 11 and now iPhoto won't open

Despite the decree from Apple that physical media is dead, I still wanted to make a DVD of something I made in iMovie but I could not find iDVD anywhere on my 2011 Mac Mini. Since iDVD was available in the App Store, I bought a copy of iLife '11 from Amazon and installed iDVD only (everything else was greyed out, except iWeb which I deselected). Now I can no longer open iPhoto! I can't remember the exact dialog box warning, but something about being damaged (I'm away from my Mac). I ran software update and there was an update for iDVD which I installed. I've restarted, I've repaired permissions, and nothing works. I've tried holding down Option while opening iPhoto but it still says it's damaged or incomplete.

In order to burn DVDs which are playable in DVD players (and TV), you need authoring/burning software - Finder cannot do that. It can burn DVDs which will play in computers, but not in DVD players. And yes, there are other burn software solutions; however, not one is close to the capabilities of iDVD.
For the OP: How did you initially obtain iPhoto? I would do a systemwide search and throw anything with iPhoto in the trash (don't empty!) - then reinstall iPhoto from the Mac App Store (if that is where you got it initially). If you can get past those hiccups, iDVD works well with both Lion and Mountain Lion; I have it installed and just finished a big movie project with it.

  • Installed iDVD 08 My iDVD 08  quits near the end stages of encoding

    Hello
My iDVD 08 unexpectedly quits during end stages of encoding
I installed iDVD 08 per the Apple fix before I even installed the first time. I removed the files stated in the lists the install all of iDVD 08. I did install new Garage Band at the same time, FYI
Rebuilt permissions, used Cocktail to clean up everything. From movie 6 I shared a project with DVD 08, chose one of the new themes, and professional quality encoding. I always burn to image file.
It unexpectedly quit then and tried again. I have plenty of empty disc space.
After the first quit, I dumped the .plist file.
It quit again and now I am trying with still a 08 theme but regular quality encoding.
    Any help or ideas?

Not sure what to offer for help here. You have taken the correct steps. I'm assuming you also ran apple's software updater.
Suggestion: Prior to installing any new software I'd recommend you first clone your existing HD as a backup which is what I do using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner (assuming your existing HD is fully operative). Then proceed with the software install or update. In the future, always have a backup plan.
Use this only as a very last resort (wait for other suggestions also):
