Installing internal storage device

Hello all,
Some time over the next few days I will be collecting and installing a 160GB Ultra ATA (internal) drive for my aging Quicksilver (specs below). The old HD is down to about 7GB spare. It is intended to configure the existing and new drives as master/slave.
I’ve found the KB documents relating to installation etc and have no queries in that respect. Additionally, a search of this forum turned up a number of helpful articles, however, one otherwise unanswered aspect upon which I am looking for further information is the possible uses as to which the new drive arrangement can be put.
At this stage I’m considering keeping the boot volume on the original HD and using the new drive simply for storage, i.e. not installing an OS on it.
Questions:
1. What are the pros and cons in making the new drive bootable, bearing in mind that I have a Tiger disc, a MacBook Pro, and a bootable clone on a LaCie FW drive if ever the need for external booting arises?
2. Is there any point in installing (or cloning) the boot volume/all the old stuff onto the new drive and wiping the old one, using that for storage?
3. Would it be practical to house the existing applications iTunes/iPhoto on the old drive and move their respective libraries onto the new drive? If so, how is that most easily achieved?
And if anyone has other suggestions as to making the most out of the drive arrangement, please feel welcome to add them.
Cheers,
Dennis

Hi-
1- Simply stated, allows for another boot volume should the need for it ever arise. Having a bootable clone already, it may not be necessary, if you are comfortable with your current backup scheme. Some (including myself) like to keep multiple boot volumes. I maintain three of each OS (4 different OS's).
Another pro; new drives are often much better performers than older drives, and having the system on the new drive could help system performance.
Con would be loss of space on the hard drive due to OS files. Some may say multiple boot volumes are confusing, yet another negative....
2-Only if the old drive provides adequate space for intended use. Again, if the old drive is relatively antiquated, cloning to the new drive, and using it for boot volume could increase performance.
3- Very practical, and helpful with regards to maintaining necessary free space on the boot volume for proper system performance.
It is as easy as moving (not copy) the iTunes library to the non boot drive, and then, setting the iTunes preferences for library location to the new drive. See this article for specifics. This article provides additional insight.
As with iTunes, iPhoto libraries can also be kept on a separate volume. This User Tip provides instruction. For additional insight, this article is helpful.
I keep my libraries on separate volumes, and try to maintain only the OS and applications on the boot volume. For backup, this requires two backup volumes, but I do feel that it provides for the best system performance, and helps keep drives from filling too fast.

  • AE - Appears to have internal storage

I noticed something very strange today.
There was an Aperture update available via the Mac App Store, approx 600Mb.
My MacBook had only just been booted up, so there was no chance that the update had loaded in the background on the computer, not even sure if the Mac App Store does that.
Anyway, I clicked on the Update button and the 600MB downloaded in seconds at a very fast rate (50Mb per sec at least), far faster than any other downloads I have ever seen on my devices.
The same thing happened with my iMac, booted it up, saw the update and downloaded in seconds  (I am running Lion on both machines).
The only change I have made recently is the installation of a new Airport Extreme basestation (the latest model).
The speed increase cannot be due to the device just being faster as I will always be limited to my 20Mbps Cable download speed.
The download should have taken at least 2 to 3 minutes but it was done in 5-10 seconds.
Could this be due to some level of internal storage in the new AE, that can recognise that downloads are available and them in the background when they are released and then be ready when you need them?   I know it was rumored that this would be a new feature but it was never mentioned by Apple when the new AEs were released.
The 600MB Aperture download definatley did NOT download over the internet to both my devices when I clicked on the update, it was far too quick, nearly instant, it must have been downloaded to the AE.

Here's Apple's specifications for the 5th generation 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). Notice, it's pretty much the same as the previous (at least) two generations. No mention of any internal storage device.
Since Lion has not been officially released, any information about, whether or not, the latest generation AEBSns can support software distribution with this OS is not available.

  • Storm 2 - RIM Mass Storage Device - Cannot Install Driver

Blackberry Storm2, with Desktop Manager 5.0 (11/23/09) installed, on Windows 7 x64.  I have Roxio Manager installed, and am able to transfer Media ONLY through that application.  There are no drives that show up in Windows Explorer for the blackberry internal storage and 16 GB SD media card.
Computer - Intel Core I7, MSI Eclipse plus MB, 12 GB Corsair DDR3 triple channel RAM, XFX Radeon 4870X2
I know this BB works with Win7 x64, as I installed Desktop manager on my laptop, and I am able to see both storage drives.
I have tried EVERY known fix for this specific issue:
    1) uninstalling DM 5.0, total clean of RIM software, reboot computer, reinstall DM 5.0.
    2) reverting back to an Acronis Trueimage backup made 2 days BEFORE I bought the BB
    3) the "calfix.exe" for blackberry.
    4) uninstalling DM 5.0, total clean of RIM software, reboot computer. Install of DM 4.x - FOUR different versions
    5) Made a custom INF file for "RIM Mass Storage Device" pointing Windows to "Disk.sys" and "partmgr.sys", and that assigns unique CLSIDs for the drives.  DO NOT try that, as it crached the heck out of my machine hence I was forced to use Acronis and recover.
    6) Tried every possible combination of enabling/disabling media card support, auto enable mass storage
    7) Pulled out SD card, soft and hard reboot of phone.  Pulled battery out.
    8) Tried the Fix from Pinstack forums
    9) Even tried a low level system hook in a cutom wrote DLL that attempted to create a named pipe using that interfaces with the CreateFileA that Roxio uses when accesing the SD card for media transfers.
I am going on 2 solid weeks of several hours a day trying to figure this out.  What could POSSIBLY be the issue of Windows not seeing the 2 storage drives, or not installing the drivers for the RIM Mass storage device?

    FOUND THE SOLUTION:
    http://tekblogs.com/tb/2007/08/18/vista-driver-problems-installing-a-usb-media-reader-a-solution/
My %SystemRoot%\INF folder was missing usbstor.inf.  By going to a file repository in the "Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository" and finding usbstor host folders, i was able to get a previously used .inf file to point Windows in the right direction.
This is most definitely a *Windows* issue.  I had no troubles with upper and lower filters in the USB CLSID in the registry, so somehow the correct inf file was deleted and I was only able to find it in the repository.
Just a note: Roxio manager basically creates a virtual disk for its own internal use, using the RIM_USB.sys driver to communicate with the hardware.  CreateFileMapping system calls are used to map this device for reading/writing.  So Roxio can work without Windows explorer ever seeing it.  Windows NEEDS the usbstor.inf to be able to install the correct USB drivers in order to access the volumes on the BB.
A moderator should sticky or tag this post, because this issue is very widespread and I only found the solution after 2 weeks of searching.

  • My lap top wont import pictures from auto play. it keeps saying there is a file error and a device connected to the computer isnt working properly. i have tried going into the internal storage to copy and paste the pictures but this wont work either.

my pictures from my i phone 4s wont import from auto play. a message keeps coming up saying there is an error and a device is not working properly. also i have tried going into the internal storage to copy and paste them but that wont work either. the page either stops responding or the picture simply dont copy. does any1 have any idea why this is happening. it has never happened before and only seems to be happening since i started using i cloud storage instead of synching my phone with the lap top.

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • My new iPhone 5 won't connect to iTunes, and when I connect to my computer it comes up as a usb storage device, also in the phone itself under usage it shows internal memory of 2gb and sd card 64 gb, is this an original iPhone or have I been sold a copy

My new iphone 5 can not connect to itunes, it comes up as a usb storage device when I plug it in, also in the phone under settings/usage it shows internal memory of 2gb and SD card of 64gb, I cannot get it to connect to itunes at all so cannot sync etc, is this a genuine Iphone or a copy. I have owned 4 iphones and never had a problem with connecting to iphones and restoreing to a backup.

    According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_5
the iPhone5 has 1GB of RAM, and internal storage of 16, 32, or 64GB.
It does not use SD cards.
Fake iphones are really Android phones using the skin of iOS6.
Click on the App Store icon. If it takes you to Apple's App Store, then it's a real iPhone.
But if you are directed to Google Play, then I'm afraid you've gotten a copy.

  • Mid 2010 iMac upgraded SSD, can't seem to install windows via bootcamp. Windows can't be installed on this storage device. The chosen harddisk contains a MBR-partition-table. Windows can only be installed on GPT-harddisks on EFI-systems error

I have windows 8.1 on DVD & on USB CF Reader/Card. I've followed the full steps in bootcamp, but when it restarts and its time to select the bootcamp partition to install windows (after alt rebooting to the efi startup) I get the "Windows can't be installed on this storage device. The chosen harddisk contains a MBR-partition-table. Windows can only be installed on GPT-harddisks on EFI-systems" error.
I've scoured the internet trying different solutions that seem to work for everyone else, but to no avail. I've reformatted from that screen, doesn't help. I've removed bootcamp partition and manually partitioned using disk util, leaving it empty once partition-wise, and filling it with a blank partition the second time. I've done a full back up and clean re-install of Yosemite, and nothing seems to be working.
Thats when I switched to DVD install, as I heard sometimes you can't install with a CF card. When I alt-boot, I can see EFI-windows and windows, but if I select EFI-windows, same problem as before, and if I select windows, I get the black screen of "no bootable device please insert boot disk and press any key."
I've been stuck w/o bootcamp for over 2 years now. Anyone, please help?
Mid 2010 iMac running 256gb SSD, Yosemite 10.10.1 trying to install windows 8.1

I am having the same problem. Windows is trying to install. It identifies the various partitions but says that I cannot install Windows on the Boot Camp partition or any other. I select Drive options (advanced) and Format the Boot Camp drive, but it makes no difference.
    This is the Windows error:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks.
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer BIOS menu.
I am not sure what Csound1 is suggesting with that post above. There are some involved suggestions over here <https://discussions.apple.com/message/23548999#23548999> about using Disk Utility to delete the Boot Camp partition and create new ones - is that the idea?

  • HT201302 How does one "Navigate to [iOS device]\Internal Storage\DCIM\100APPLE"?

I'm trying to manually move 500+MB files from my iPad to my XP, and I'm stuck on step 4 "Navigate to [iOS device]\Internal Storage\DCIM\100APPLE".
I can't find any drive or directory information associated with the iPad.  How do I get to the 100APPLE directory?
    Thanks for any help.

Just found a workaround in this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2434344?start=0&tstart=0
In short, find the files in the iTunes backup data, copy them to where you want them, then add the appropriate extensions.

  • How to get internal hard disk name or external storage device on Mac

    Hi,
I have a video display component to which I want to give the url of a flv file through a browse button. through browse button I am getting entire url path of the flv file except the top most root directory name. but in mac we should give absolute path with : delimitation rather than / as delimitation. for this I need to get the internal or external storage device name through AIR application. I will be very greatfull if anybody help me out on this issue.

The following code lists the names of all mounted volumes on a Mac:
    var volumes:Array = new File("/Volumes").getDirectoryListing();
    for (var i:int = 0; i < volumes.length; i++)
        trace(volumes[i].name);

  • Issue with iphone internal storage

I connected my iPhone with notebook, but once I opened internal storage, there's no folder or data inside. This one doesn't have itune installed because I don't use it to sync with my phone. I just use it to download work's photo. I have tried to uninstall and re-install device, but it doesn't work.

In the case of camera roll, the first time that I connected to this notebook, it worked and I could see photo in camera roll. But today I could not see anything. It showed "Folder is empty".
I knew if connected iphone on comouter without iTune installed, iPhone will work as storage device only. But this is weird that there's not photo inside camera roll.

  • Ideapad A10 - Internal Storage 1G Limitation Major Problem

I have had the A10 Ideapad for less than 2 days and have installed a handful of apps. I am now told that there is not enough storage for additional applicaitons. The 16g internal stoge has been divided up into 1G internal storage and the remainder "nand" storage.
This seems to have been spetacularly short-sighted as now I am out of storage for apps which insist on being instlaled on the internal partition. How can I resize the "internal storage" partition or at least force apps to install on the "nand" parition or to SD card. I would prefer not to root the device and not to have to install any move2sd apps.
    thanks

Yeah, I reckon that someone cut a deal with them to kill the A10. Why would you release a product like this? It an ideal prodcut for me, if it worked, but it seems the industry is really keen not to produce something like the eee pc again. They want to keep prices up and not produce cheap, semi-disposable machines.
I liked the A10 because of its price point. I can take it with me in situations where I wouldn't want to risk a more expensive machine like the beach or on long haul flights. I can just chuck it in a backpack and not worry too much about it getting damaged.
This is the first the lenovo I bought. Its definitely the last too.

  • Internal Storage

I have an unlocked Torch 9810 using with T-Mobile, the phone has been working perfectly until recently it keeps rebooting and asking to repair or reformat the internal storage when i select YES freezes the phone or Keeps on Rebooting and sometimes gets stuck rebooting........ Does anyone have suggestions on how to correct this or should I just get a new phone????

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
From your description, that sounds quite severe...but, if you want to try some work, here are some things you can attempt. If you don't want to try, then you certainly should be covered by warranty if that remains in force for you.
At the top of each device forum, there should be some "sticky" threads that discuss the OS levels available for many models. If they include your model, then please use those as reference as you proceed. Otherwise, you will have to dig through the official download portal for OS packages for your model:
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
You may also want to investigate the use of BBSAK (bbsak.org) to perform the wipe it is capable of.
You may also want to try this procedure to perhaps narrow down the precise causal item:
Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents
When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:
KB19915How to perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software
