Installing Itunes comletely to an external hardrive

My c drive is full, so i copied all my music files to my external hardrive..
what i want to do is install itunes on my external hardrive and run itunes just from the external hardrive. What i did was uninstall itunes on my c drive, and reinstalled and specified my external hardrive but when it is done installing it still shows in my My documents itunes folder in the c drive..even tho it installs to my external hardrive..
At first I tried changing the original i tunes under preferences to save all the files to the external hardrive, and unchecking copy files to itunes folder.
but when i put songs in , it still saved to the c drive..
please help i am finding this very frustrating.

Hi, do you know if this works if I then want to move my library to a new computer as that is my main intention bacause my old computer hasn't got enough space for me to add new albums so I want to ditch the computer (its got to be about 100 years old and doesn't seem to cope well with modern technology!!) and start using my laptop for my iTunes. I am at the point now where i'm ready to throw both my computer and iPod out the window!!!! I might point out as well that in trying to clear space on my computer I accidently deleted the Bonjour programme which is aparently needed to use the home share option, oops!!!!
Thanks, Kerry

I installed windows 7 on my MacBook Pro 13 inch fine and then when it came to install the bootcamp drivers from my external hardrive windows 7 doesnt recognise it in any way. So im stuck on windows 7 any ideas?

Some people don't even know there is a Set Default OS startup disk control panel as part of System Preferences.
With Lion and no DVD any more there is however a new Lion Recovery Mode and boot partition you want to get familiar with

I want to install iTunes on an external HD and run it from there. I do not want to use my PC's HD for iTunes or my music library. Will this work?

    Welcome to AD!
Just move your music to the exHD. Let the itunes.exe program stay on your hard drive.
Here is a good iLounge article on that:

  • Running iTunes and iPhoto through external hardrive.

    Howzit.
I need help, my memory capacity is FULL, i would like to run my itunes and iphoto options (completely) through an external hardrive to free up space on my mac.
Please explain clearly and sytematically I'm a beginner and learner yet.
    Thank you so much

iTunes is simpler than iPhoto at doing this, as it has the ability in its preferences to use a different folder for organizing music. However, I would warn against doing this, as external hard drives have been known in the past to disconnect, and have problems with Spotlight indexing a lot more frequently than with internal drives. Also to add to that, it makes backing up such files harder as a simple clone of your internal drive won't backup the files you move to the external. You'll have to manually backup those files elsewhere whether DVD, or a second external hard drive. Here's my FAQ on backing up:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
If you are willing to take the risks involved and are prepared to work with them, I believe you can do this by Quitting from iPhoto and making a Unix shortcut to the external drive replacing your existing Pictures folder on the internal drive once the Pictures folder is on the external drive. I'm not sure which command line ln command makes the right type of link, but I'm sure with some research you can find it.
Edit: your Powerbook will take up to 160 GB internal ATA/IDE 2.5" hard drives. You might want to seriously consider getting that.

  • Need help setting up external hardrive to play itunes on 2nd Mac

I have my main music collection on my Mac Pro (400 gigs).  I want to be able to use my Mac Mini downstairs to play my itunes collection.  I have attempted the following steps without success:
Using my Mac Pro, I formatted a 2TB Seagate drive into two partitions (one to use as timemachine back up for the Mac Mini) the other to copy my itunes collection to.
I copied my entire itunes folder onto that Seagate hardrive partition which I named :"Mac mini Itunes"
plugged in seagate hardrive to the mac mini
Opened itunes using the hold option button to choose the iTunes library on the external hardrive
When I chose the iTunes folder located in that "mac mini iTunes" hard drive icon on my desktop, I get the following message:
"The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission for this file"
When I go to the Sharing and Permissions info on that "mac mini Itunes" hard drive icon, it shows "You can only read"
Below that I see that the Name and privilege info is grayed out and I can not change anything.
The Ignore ownership on this volume is checked but grayed out and I can not change it.
Any suggestions on how I can use this hardrive to play my iTunes collection on my mac mini?
Do I need to reformat the Seagate drive and do something different while partitioning the drive?
Should I reformat it using the mac mini instead of the Mac Pro and then copy my iTunes folder to it?
    Thanks for any help

Hello blakemj. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
For your described network configuration, you will want to reconfigure your 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) as a "wireless client" to the Buffalo wireless router.
    Here's how ...
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
(Note: As a third option, you can temporarily connect the AXn directly to an available LAN port on your Buffalo wireless router during setup, and then, place it at the desired location when complete.)
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing Buffalo's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • How can I move part of itunes library onto an external hard drive?

I have a small hard drive (160 gb) and I want to keep my music on my internal hard drive so I can take my laptop around and listen to music throughout the day, but if I want to watch a movie I can plug in my external hard drive and launch them from itunes. For example, if the external hard drive was not connected it would just say "unable to find file". Currently I have my entire itunes library on an external hardrive.
Is this possible? Any help would be greatly appreaciated.
    Late 2008 Unibody Macbook
    OS X 10.9.1
    Itunes 11.1.3

Create a new library and transfer what you want in it from your other library. To switch between libraries hold down the OPTION key as you start iTunes. Select the one you wish to use.

    This article will help you.
    1. Yes, you can trash the original folder. If you have a large media library, then yes you should free up a good chunk of space. However, you must also empty the trash. You can't just leave it in the trash or it will take up space.
    2. Once you select the new media folder in iTunes as the article tells you, I believe all new downloaded media will automatically go to that new folder.

  • Itunes on my windows 7 laptop an external hardrive

i have been using itunes on my windows 7 laptop with my library on an external hardrive on my XP desktop.  I recently replaced the desktop with a new Windows 7 desktop and plugged in the same external harddrive but itunes only recognizes some of the songs.  The laptop can see them all when looking outside of Itunes, but not sure why itunes does not recognize.  (I did change my preferences to the name of the new computer/externaldrive/directory name.

You should be able to.   ITunes 11 is compatible with Windows 7.

    Hello ryane84
The easiest and most efficient way to copy your music is to follow the steps under the External drive section. Make sure that you have organized the iTunes library first before you copy it over. Then put the copied iTunes folder in the same Music folder on your computer.

    Hey jcaqualung,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with iTunes on your Windows Vista machine. The following resource may provide a solution. I would also recommend installing iTunes on the internal hard drive of your computer, as opposed to the external drive.

You might consider itunes match for moving CDs you've copied into your itunes library if you dont have a way to use home sharing.
iTunes match is an optional service offered by apple that costs about $25 a year.  It scans your music library and if it finds music that is already in apple's itunes catalog it'll automatically "unlock"/"store" these in the cloud for you.  Items that it does not find in the catalog it'll upload and store these in the cloud for you and you can download them on your devices.  See http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/
