Installing Jaguar 10.2.3

Hello,
I am trying to install Jaguar 10.2.3 in a iMac G3, 333 mhz, which I bought used. The computer had a bigger HD installed, and was running 8.6.
When I try the install, it goes to the point where the destination disk has to be chosen. The hard disk has a red exclamation point, and it says the error is something about the destination disk not being in the first 8 GB.
I have tried reformatting, zeroed, partitions, and still not able to complete the installation. MacOS 9 installs just fine, but I need to run Jaguar.
What can I do?
Thanks.

A tray loading iMac has the same ATA controller as a beige G3, meaning that if you choose to install OS 10, the OS has to be installed on the first partition of the drive, which the partition cannot be bigger than 7.99gb. Actually, the disk utility in OS 10 uses GiB, so you will have to make the first partition 7.4GB to install OS 10 on that partition. Use the other partition on the drive for extra files and applications.
Hope this helps.

  • Need exact instructions on installing Jaguar on B & W

Want to install Jaguar on my B & W. It has the 1.1 firmware update already installed. (I tried to install the update, but the Mac said it was already updated. Got the Mac on eBay, so someone else must have updated it.) The current OS is 9.2.2. The computer has a 13GB hard drive, 256MB RAM, 300Mhz processor.
Am new to the Mac platform, so not sure how to install software or operating systems on it. Any detailed instructions on how to do this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First, Open Energy Saver Control Panel and change all settings to never sleep, never spin down the Hard drive, etc.
Insert the CD into the CD reader. The Mac OS X Install CD Icon should mount in the upper right corner, under the existing Icon of your Hard Drive.
Double click to open the Mac OS X CD Icon, if the window does not open automatically.
There are some readMe files available nearby, if you would like to inspect or print them.
Find the Install Mac OS X Install [Application] Icon and double-click it to begin installation. Your Mac will display a button inviting you to re-boot and begin Installation.
Click the button, then follow the directions.
Choose NOT to install Additional language support and printer drivers and Developer Tools, unless you are positive you will need them. They are way too big and not immediately useful.
The installation will proceed through the first CD. At the end of that installation, your Mac will attempt to boot to the partial OS image on the Hard drive. If it does, it will demand the second CD be inserted into the drive to continue installation.
At the end of the second CD install, it will drop into the Registration/Account/Internet Setup wizard. You must complete this process or you will not be able to boot from the Mac OS X Hard Disk again.
When the installation is complete, and from time-to-time throughout the update process, boot from the CD (by holding down the C key at startup) and the Installer screen will come up.
DO NOT choose the installation language, but instead choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Select your Hard Drive and run Repair Disk. repeat until no errors.
Select your Hard Drive and run Repair Permissions.
Quit and boot from the Hard drive.
    In Mac OS X, select:
System Preferences > Software Update > and click the "Update Now" button.
Install the Combo update by itself first, then others a few at a time, repairing disk and permissions after each small group.

  • Installing Jaguar on a Single-1.25GHz MDD?

Does anyone know what OSX version(s) shipped with the "Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors 2003)" model(s). This was the G4 that was brought back for OS9 booting, after the release of the G5's.
This article is missing this info: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
Also, was there just the Single 1.25 MHz version as I remember and Wikipedia reports:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerMacG4
Or also a Dual 1.25 MHz, as this article describes:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42739
If it/they did ship with Panther, has anyone tried installing Jaguar on one -- which usually wouldn't be possible, but might be in this case as it was a "reissue"?
And finally, were the earlier problems with the MDD's (as described in the Wikipedia article cited) -- fan noise and ground circuit on the audio out -- both fixed for this version?
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
I had a 1ghz single, dual-boot MDD G4 bought about that time, it shipped with Jaguar on. Then after the first year I put Panther on it for 18 months before terminal hardware failure sent it to the Mac graveyard in the sky.

  • Running panther, installing Jaguar.  How do I proceed?

    HI all,
    this is my first post.
So, did the subject line generate a chuckle from those in-the-know?
Recently, I bought my wife a Nano, which apparently is not compatible with Panther. No problem, I thought. I'll just upgrade to Jaguar. Well, I've ordered the software. And now after reading much about this topic, I think I may be in trouble.
My machine is a Powerbook G4, so I think I'm ok so far.
BTW, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to computers, so I may have bitten off more than I can chew.
    Any comments or observations, anyone?
    Thanks
    Greg

Your Powerbook G4 must be at least 867 MHz. If it is not, Leopard won't install.
If it is, plug in the DVD, run the installer, under the options, choose an archive and install and preserve user and network settings. You also may want to choose customize and remove and printer drivers and languages you don't use.

  • Crash when attempting to install panther and jaguar

    Hello,
Few days ago I suffered a nasty crash (kernel panic I think) from using Windows Media Player 9 and a partially downloaded movie. After that the computer was unable to restart. Blue screen after showing the starting up window and nothing more. (I asked about that in this thread "what are my chances of full/partial recovery?" http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1008280&tstart=0 ).
Managed to get all my personal files off the crashed Powerbook via another machine using firewire disk target mode. Having managed to successfully do that I thought it was going to be plain sailing from then on. I used Disk Utility to reformat the drive including overwriting with zeros, and the Powerbook drive appeared on the other machine's desktop completely empty and looking fine.
Having disconnected it from the other machine, using Panther install CD 1 to install Panther I got a kernel panic, the message in multiple languages including Japanese saying restart computer, soon after clicking the Install button.
I tried starting from the Jaguar install disk 1, choosing Disk Utilities to reformat the drive again (without zeroing it this time) and tried to install Jaguar instead. Soon after clicking Install the screen went entirely black with a bit of white text in the top left: The installer has quit due to an unexpected error (exit code 0). Please restart your computer.
What's going on? The computer was working fine before the Windows Media Player crash (which occured when viewing movie in full screen mode). I've wiped and reformated the disk and now can't install Panther or Jaguar. What could the problem be? Firmware? I'm guessing without knowing anything. I'm v. surprised the problem is continuing after reformatting the drive. That indicates that the crash effected something other than the contents of the drive?! which I thought was impossible.
Any suggestions would be much apprecaited.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    Thanks for the replies/info.
Yes the Panther and Jaguar install disks are retail versions, not specific machine versions. And the Jaguar ones worked for the Powerbook before.
The Powerbook I have is the Firewire 500mhz one, Pismo I think it's called. The hard drive is a 60GB one. I didn't have to partition it before.
Reviewing all the above, it would appear that the problem is me not being able to use an internal, built in CD/DVD drive to install from this time? The only other thing it could be I think is the crash I recently had has had some bad effect -- but that's unlikely right? So, I need to get a new DVD drive? Or is there any other way to get the OS onto the Powerbook without getting another internal DVD/CD drive? Is there anyway to install onto the PB from another machine maybe?
Does that sound right?: not being able to use internal DVD/CD drive is the source of my current problem?
    Thanks.

  • Install failure: Tiger & Panther & Jaguar

I have 400 MHz Power Book with 384 MB of memory & a 10GB drive. (CPU Type: PowerPC 750(42.2)) It was running under OSX 10.3.9 successfully when it started to slow up terribly. So I decided to clean it out and try to upgrade to Tiger. Backed-up the hard drive and did an erase-&-install of Tiger. I'd get an "Installation was unsuccessful. Please re-install message." And again. And again. So I tried to erase-&-install Panther. Same message. Tried one or twice again, this time not erasing, but accepting the default "Upgrade" option. Finally it worked, it seemed. Tried to update to 10.3.9. Disk image failed to open, so I opened it on my desktop machine and network-transferred the update install file to the laptop to install. That seemed to work, but some apps refused to open; iTunes, Mail, . . . Tried to install Jaguar; same failure message. Kept trying till it seemed to succeed. Update to 10.2.8 failed. . . . Tried various other things, including DiskWarrior, TechTool, AppleJack, PowerBook hardware test disk. No problems found.
I've currently got it running under 10.3. (There are a bunch of files and folders with (Mac OS 9) as part of their names. These, plus an AppleJack dmg and a ComboUpdate 10.3.9 --all under the root directory-- seem to be left over from an earlier install, even through at least one erase-&-install.)
Oh, yes. The battery has been dead for a long time. If that matters.
    Any good ideas, anyone?

If you do an Erase and Install then there cannot be anything "leftover" from a previous installation.
Is this a Pismo or later model or a Lombard? Lombard's cannot run Tiger. Tiger requires a computer with built-in Firewire and USB ports.
I suggest you may want to do an extended hard drive format:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation.
A dead battery should not be a problem as long as you have the AC adapter connected for power. However, none of the settings normally preserved in PRAM will be saved whenever AC power is removed or the computer is shut down. This could lead to odd behavior because the date and time, display information, selected boot volume, etc. are stored in PRAM.

  • Installing OS 9 and jaguar on Seagate hard drive I've just installed

I have just installed a seagate 120Gb ATA hard drive. I've configured it as 'slave' and initialised it. I want to install OS 9 on it and then jaguar. I have tiger on my master drive. Everytime I try to restart my computer on the slave using the OS 9.04 software install disc that originally came with my computer it refuses to load. I aim to install the OS 9.04 and use the updater I have on disc to update it to 9.1 and then install jaguar.
I recently updated the firmware when I installed a processer upgrade. Is this preventing the disc from installing 9.04? Or is there something else I should be doing?

    Hi Alison,
Coming back to you about your queries:
So if I install OS 9.1 on the same drive as OS 10.2 I
    don't need to partition?
No, you don't need to partition.
Or do I? If so, how big should I make each
    partition?
If you still want to partition, then the relative sizes of the partitions depend on the total drive space available plus what you actually want to put on them. If you don't have to partition, I wouldn't, as it tends to lock away drive space (you can't save files across the drive volumes).
I have tiger on the other drive so that's not a
    problem.
Yes, and you can still set up Clasic to boot up off the OS 9 that you will have installed in your other drive.
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers!

  • How to Perform a Clean Install of Panther 10.3

I am currently running Jaguar 10.2.8 (no OS9) on an iMac G3/400, 320 megs ram, dsl internet. I want to perform a clean install of Panther 10.3 (not the upgrade or archive + install). After placing the first Panther disc in the slot, I get a screen on which I click the install icon, I then click the restart, the machine reboots, gives me an installation screen asking me to choose the language, I choose English, then click "continue", I then get a screen telling me I cannot install OSX because the "firmware" is not up to date. I then have to click on the "close" button, then use a pin to get the cd out of the machine. I thought the only firmware update necessary was when you want to install Jaguar over OS9. How can I fix this situation so I can install Panther? I am not much of a techie, fairly new to Mac so please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks.

The firmware update for your model is required for running OS X regardless of which version you install. You will need to install OS 9.1 or later in order to install the firmware update if the computer has not been updated.
OS 9 should have been included with the computer as part of the original software that came with it. You can install OS 9 on the same volume on which OS X is currently installed or you can erase the drive before installing OS 9. After you perform the firmware update you can do an Erase and Install of Panther.
You should avoid using a pin to forcibly remove a disc from the optical drive. Just restart the computer and hold down the mouse button to have the disc ejected. See the following:
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

"...install the Jaguar cd from Classic-9.2.2..."
So you were booted into OS 9.2.2, not running Classic through OS X, right?
Running Classic, is different than starting up in OS 9.2.2.
    "...updatint the firmware."
Did you download and install, the Firmware Update, that was previously linked to?
And you did that, after you installed Jaguar 10.2.x?
"...using to upgrade to Panther the Install Cd,"
Do the discs look exactly like THESE, and do not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them?
    "...added 512 mg of memory."
Are you sure this is compatible, working RAM, and is it new, or used?
"Sorry about the free disk space.I don´t want classic now just Panther."
So if the Hard Drive is 6GB, and it is empty now, did you Erase the drive?

  • Easy question about install time

    Hello,
I have been having a lot of problems with my MacBook and after posting on the forums it seems a re-install might help. This is my firt time doing a wipe/install so I backed up my files and booted from my Tiger install DVD and did a wipe/install and I am staring at in installing right now. It seems to be taking forever! It has been going for about 2 hours now and is about 1/3 of the way finished and says it has 3 hours 43 minutes to go. Is it supposed to take this long?

    Hi,
I haven't installed Tiger on an Intel Mac but have installed Jaguar, Panther and Tiger a number of times on PPC Macs. It never took more than 30 minutes to complete.
I would suggest you let the installation run its course and then see how the computer is working.
It might be that your HD needed repairing... did you check it with disk utility before starting the installation ?
One more thing... after the first boot (where you set up accounts, etc) you should boot from the install DVD check the disk with disk utility and repair if necessary.

  • How to Install Tiger on a 1st series iMac via Ethernet?

    Hey guys
I want to upgrade a 333MHz iMac to Tiger which has no firewire ports, only USB. I don't have an external HD to boot from, except my G5. I want to find out how I can install it via ethernet, is it possible? And if it is, how would I do it? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Luis,
First off, if you could install Tiger on that machine you would be limited to the first 8 GB of the hard disk:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106235
That gives you very little room to work with for anything that needs to be on the boot partition.
Also if Jaguar hasn't been installed on the machine, you'll want to upgrade the Firmware before installing Jaguar or later on the machine, otherwise face the possibility of a permanently dark screen.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
As you already have a PowerMac G5, let that be your Mac OS X machine, and network your iMac to the PowerMac G5 and leave the iMac in Mac OS 9.
For more on Apple's migration to Mac OS X and the best ways to proceed, see my FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html
I do not recommend upgrading the iMac G3 333 past 10.3.9 (though as you can see you'll still need the firmware update and be limited to 8 GB if you go to Mac OS X). Let the iMac G3 run what it is able to run according to Apple. Doing otherwise would be akin to putting a jet engine on a chariot. It may work, but then again, any attempted further upgrades would result in a serious jalopy of a machine.

  • How to install from Tiger DVD on Lombard with CD drive

I've installed Jaguar on a G3 Powerbook Lombard, and downloaded XPostFacto 4. I want to install Tiger, but I only have the DVD version, and there is only a CD drive in the computer. Can I install Tiger from a networked DVD drive, or is there another option?
    tim

There has been at least one report of success using an external USB 1.1 DVD drive to start up the Mac OS X 10.4 DVD on a clamshell iBook
Okay, it seems that the DVD will boot from a USB DVD drive after setting the Boot Disk to the USB drive.
However, running XPostFacto returns a "XPostFacto does not work with this model: Powerbook 1,1" (1,1 referring to Lombard). I've also searched around the XPF forums with little luck. Tiger will also not natively install on a Lombard, but I found this article that details a OSInstall.dist code change to allow Tiger to install.
    http://jonsharp.net/archives/2005/05/06/installing-tiger-on-lombard
I may try this later, and post back with results. For now, I'll be running 10.2.

  • Looks serious. possible hardware problem. unable to install any OS.

    Hi,
Powerbook was working absolutely fine. Stupidly, I attempted to watch a partially (97%) downloaded (with Bittorrent) movie (.wmv -- WM3) in Windows Media Player 9 in full screen mode. Half way through the movie freezes. I try and get out of full screen, nothing changes -- the whole machine is frozen. I restart. During boot there's a serious error -- kernel panic I think -- telling you to restart machine in various languages including Japanese. Restart. Freezes during start up window progress bar. Restart. Freeze.
I start up from the Jaguar disk 1 start up disk, go into Disk Utilties, repair disk -- errors found, and fixed apparently. Restart. Freeze.
I start up from DiskWarrior 4 start up disk and start it on the drive. Step 6: "Overlapped files detected" with a number after, and it starts taking ages. I left DW working for nearly two days until it seemed to have frozen (still on step 6).
I connect the sick PB to an iMac via firewire and start up the PB in disk target mode, the PB's drive appears on the desktop of the iMac and I'm able to easily with no problems copy off all my personal files. At that point I thought all was saved -- I was out of hot water, no further real problems. All I had to do is wipe the drive and reinstall etc.
I reformatted the drive from the iMac choosing to zero aswell. The PB's drive appears on the desktop empty and looking fine.
Start up the PB using Panther retail install disk one click install, it goes through checking the install disk then starts to check the target disk or actually install on the target disk -- at that point kernel panic -- 'restart machine' in various languages including Jap. Start up again using Panther disk, this time choose Disk Utilities to attempt to refromat the drive again, kernel panic before Disk Utilties even gets fully open.
I start up the PB using Jaguar retail install disk one, choose Disk Utilties -- fine. I reformat the drive, this time not bothering with zeroing. Fine. Go through to install Jaguar. Again it checks the install disk fine, then immediately after, kernel panic.
I tried partitioning the drive into two using Disk Utilties on Jaguar start up disk. My thinking was, maybe the start of the drive is damaged. Then tried to install onto partition two: panic. Just to check, tried to install to partition one: panic.
It's a 60GB drive. I installed Jaguar onto it ages ago successfully. The only difference was when doing it ages ago is I used the PB's internal CD/DVD drive. That had since broken and I've been using an external firewire CD/DVD drive -- all the above various Jaguar / Panther attempts were from the external drive. I just received a 2nd hand internal CD/DVD drive I bought on eBay -- I was blindly/stupidly hoping that using an internal CD drive would solve my problem but it hasn't.
What's the problem? It seems as if the initial Windows Movie Player crash has caused this, but that can't be can it? That was a software crash and I've since reformated the drive. There shouldn't be any remnants of that in anyway. So it's a hardware problem? But it was working fine before the crash and nothing has happened to the PB between the crash and now. But there's no two ways about it -- right now the PB seems terminally broken.
Any suggestions how to get my PB working again?
    TIA,
    John.

It's intalled. So it turns out I was lying when I said "The only difference was when doing it ages ago is I used the PB's internal CD/DVD drive." -- I forgot to mention there was no AirPort card in the PB when I installed Jag ages ago.
Also a small note: it seems an internal CD drive was necessary in the end. When the Panther install restarted and requested disk 2 I couldn't get it to recognize disk 2 from the external drive -- had to use the internal one to continue (although I didn't spend too much time/effort trying to get the external one to work but on the face of it it didn't seem to). (Although I can imagine there may be a way of installing stuff from disk 2 after having customized the install to not require anything from disk 2 for the first main automated install possibly? I may sell the internal CD/DVD drive if so as otherwise it was a waste of money).
Having installed Panther I put the AirPort card and the 2nd memory back in and started up -- all's apparently OK, but of course there's good reason not to be convinced of that. I didn't customize the Panther install as I wanted (because I didn't expect it to work). Not sure if I dare try wiping and reinstalling.
Obviously I'd feel happier knowing what the problem was/is. Looks like the AirPort card had something to do with it. But even when that was out the PB couldn't start from OS9. When formatting the drive (from OS X installer software) I'm sure I had the OS9 check box ticked. Even if I hadn't it wouldn't stop the OS9 CD working would it?; the hard drive just wouldn't appear once started up from the OS9 CD.
So I now have Panther up and running with both bits of memory in and the AirPort card in. I haven't messed around with/in Panther at all yet but on the face of it it seems fine.
Any ideas what the problem was/is? Any suggestions how to find out? Should I just ignore it and forget it ever happened (and cross my fingers and hope I never need to mess around with OS installs again)? Would be nice to know what's going on though. For a start it looks like if ever I want to install OS9 on it I won't be able to -- which actually may be something I want to do in the future possibly.
    Thanks.

  • How do I go from Panther to Jaguar?

On one of my G3 iMac 400's with 128 meg of ram, I installed Panther. It seems to me that Jaguar was a little more "responsive" than Panther. I have no desire to add more ram to the computer. What is the easiest way to go back to Jaguar?

  • Archive and install issue

I have a friend that ran an "archive and install" on a G5 running 10.3 but they used the 10.2 disk. Now certain applications will not work and they receive an error when trying to upgrade to 10.3.
Is there any way to reverse this to fix it? Or are they stuck with the only option of reloading the G5 with a fresh install of 10.3?

    Erik:
Unfortunately, you do not tell us very much about the G5 computer to which you refer. Please update your profile to tell exactly what computer we are talking about, giving other specifics about the computer.
If the G5 in question shipped with Jaguar (10.2x) re-installing Jaguar should work. The article Don't install older versions of Mac OS than what comes with your computer gives more information on this.
they receive an error when trying to upgrade to 10.3.
To install Panther your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Panther.
You will need to purchase the Full Retail version of Panther. Please note that Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided since they are optimized for the computer to which they are specific and will therefore, very likely, cause problems during or after installation.
