Installing JRE via MSI w/o Sun JVM being default for IE

1. Can you use the same command line switches for the MSI (doesn't seem so)?
2. Using IEXPLORER=0 with the EXE doesn't seem to work anyway!!!
Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I'm not sure I understand what you want - during a Java install, you're given the option to make the Sun JVM the IE default , or not.
After installation. this can be changed from the Browser tab of the Java Plug-in (in Windows, accessible from the Control Panel.)
AFAIK, Sun installer doesn't have switches.

  • Automatic download/install JRE via JNLP

Under Java Web Start Reference (http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/developers.html)
"A MAIN feature of the ... JNLP... is the ability to automatically download and install JREs onto the user's machine".
Many have taken this to mean "if the client doesn't have the necessary JRE it will be installed". Well, if the client doesn't have ANY JRE isn't that the same thing as not having the necessary JRE installed? Apparently not. It appears that it is similar to the old joke: How to be a millionaire: 1) First, get a million dollars. The documentation might be enhanced if this chicken/egg situation were mentioned. It seems that we have to write scripts, etc to either point to a JRE download site or somehow manage the install ourselves. I started to look into this but then realized YOU HAVE TO HAVE ADMIN RIGHTS to install the JRE on the client.
This may all be self-evident to those who have been through this but it's a bitter lesson. If what I have written is not true would someone set me straight and tell me how to get around the admin rights problem? Oh, and does the admin rights problem persist if the the client has a JRE but JNLP needs to download/install a different version? This may be the mortal blow to three months' effort at getting J2EE/J2SE in the door at my company: all we want is to download and run a small Java app for the user to use regardless of which machine he or she is using.

To change the Registry, Windows requires admin rights. This may (or may not be something you can achieve with Secondary Logon Rights - see http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=225035 ) There is also a lot of information about this on the web, you should do some further research.
To run applets and browser related programs requires that Java install the JRE, which uses Browser Helper Objects (BHO's) and that involves Registry entries.
However, if you only need to run Java programs from the commandline, then the possibility exists to install the Java JDK without a public JRE. That could be done by a simple copy of the appropriate directory(s). This will give you a private JRE inside the JDK, and doesn't make any Registry entries. (Of course, then applets can't be run.) That JRE can then be accessed using a full path to the java.exe executable. (I don't know whether using Sun's downloaded installer will do this - it may still require admin privileges.)
You're in an area where you'll probably have to do some experimentation. I would address the JNLP questions to the Java Web Start forum, there are some good people that monitor that forum.

  • Installed new HD on Mid-2009 MBP, installed Mavericks, now getting "error code -50" after being on for a while.

So I had the stock 320gb drive that came with my machine. It started crashing, so I pre-empted the loss of data and installed a spare Western Digital 500gb Scorpio Blue drive, installed Mavericks, and restored my data. Almost immediately I began having sporadic issues with the machine being unable to write to the disk, giving me "error code -50" after being on for about a day or so. I usually just restart and it will work for another day or so, but this is getting very tedious, and I'm a bit worried it might be straining the machine, since I can only hard restart (holding power button) when this happens. Usually, right after restarting, I repair the disk permissions, and this seems to fix things.
Is this maybe a bad OS install? Maybe I should back up and try it all again? Or is there a software issue I'm not seeing a solution for anywhere? Most people who are getting the "error code -50" messages seem to be getting them on external drives. Is it just a compatibility issue and I need to seek a new drive?

    Thank you for the tips!

In my case I doubt it is the problem because it worked fine before Mavericks, although forcing restart may have done something. I hope disabling SMS helped.

  • Itunes x64 Windows 8.1 Itunes 11.1.3, Itunes doesn't display airplay icon for multi speakers, it does appear when my iphone connects via airplay to my airport express being used for wireless audio. How to fix ?

Here goes, when Itunes is started (have tried pc reboot and itunes restart) no airplay icon, even though my airport express is connected to second stereo, with green light and confirmed newest firmware for device id A1264 etc. Can send audio to device and device works well.
    BUT
Itunes can only see the wireless speakers when another airplay device (my iphone) pairs and PLAYS via the wireless speakers. THEN Itunes shows the airplay icon, I can then pair my PC to the wireless speakers, connect (says can't play audio because speakers are already paired), disconnect iphone airplay and then the PC connects and can play through wireless speakers.
This is a long process, some sort of glitch etc. and I figure it's an airport express thing maybe that is not announcing itself on the WIFI until it pairs to my iphone, or maybe it's a pc problem that my airplay networking via my PC is not announcing itself properly to bonjour WIFI ?
    Hopefully someone can help me.

  • IE doesn't recognise Sun JVM..

I stuffed up my IE 6.0 installation .... I can't recall what I changed but the browser doesn't recognise my JVM anymore. Applets won't download...... I did all the obvious as explained on the relevant Sun and MS websites, such as:
    - reinstalled JVM 1.4.x
    - configured browser using via Java, Internet Control Panels (uncheck the MS JVM, etc.)
    - flushed temp internet files
    - rebooted
I am getting desperate for any help..... Thanks in advance.

    Hello All,
I've been looking into this problem for quite a while now and I'm not sure if it is only 1 problem or two.
On some machines Java appears to be disabled. This is fixable by uninstalling and re-installing either the Sun JVM (as robby_h mentions) or by re-installing the MS JVM (which is a little hard to find).
The second problem I have seen is where the Sun JVM still starts as does the Applet, but the database connection we use doesn't work. It appears to be substituting 127.0.0.1 (the local machine) for the Host in the connection string. I'm not sure if this is the only effect but it does cause a major problem for us as some of our clients are unable to use our e-commerce sites and a lot will not be reporting the issue to us.
I have been working on finding a way to solve the problem. It's not pretty but removing Java (both MS JVM and Sun JVM) completely and then re-installing it has worked so far. I've tested it on win 2k and XP home machines.
I am not sure where the problem actually is. I believe that it's something to do with IE which is changed (probably a/some dll files) when Java is installed. This would explain why in some cases installing a different version of the Sun JVM might work as if the dll files are different then they will overwrite the bad dlls and hence solve the problem.
robby_h, have you tried re-installing the latest Sun JVM since you got it working with 1.3?
If it is a problem with a corrupt dll then I have no idea which one it is. Anyone know how to find out?
    Alastair.

I want to deploy J2se application having tomcat webserver and mysql database. This application is to be installed on client's machine from CD as a single-click application. How can we setup JRE and webserver using JavaWebStart?
Is it possible to install JRE using WebStart? This is most urgent requirement for us.Any who worked on it?Pease help!!!!

You need a JRE installed to run Java WebStart (because Java WebStart is a Java program itself). However, this does not need to be the same JRE that your application uses, because you can specify the JRE to use in your JNLP file and Java WebStart will automatically (most of the time) download and install the correct JRE.
As to the original question of installing a webserver and database on the client: you will have to distribute both as (or in) one or more jar file (which are likely to be quite large), unpack the jar file(s) on the local machine and then run an installation script, using Runtime.exec(). This requires the user to grant "all-permissions" to your WebStart app, as well a fool-proof installation script for the webserver and database.
Webstart may not be the ideal solution for your situation. If the users are always connected to the network, why the local webserver and database (can't they just use one connected to the net)? If the users aren't connected to a network, why Webstart?

    Lilly,
since you just got your new MacBook Pro, at this point I’d recommend making an appointment at an Apple store to show them what’s happening when you run Boot Camp Assistant. Be sure to take your Windows 7 disc and your USB SuperDrive with you, so you can show them how it currently behaves. Please include in your reply whether they were able to resolve the problem, and if so, how they did it, so that future readers of this discussion can benefit from your experience.

  • JRE 6U35 and JRE7U7 improperly install (via MSI in GPO) on top of existing

    Hello,
Within my environment, we occasionally have to push out software updates (MSI based installers) via group policy. We also install the latest JRE as a part of our base install when systems are built. In the past, this has worked without issue. The previous behavior of the MSI installer when used within a GPO was to NOT install if the current (or newer) version of the JRE was already installed. I've confirmed that with both JRE 6U35 and JRE7U7, if a system already had say JRE6U35 installed (silently via msiexec /i "jre1.6.0_35.msi" /qn) as part of the base install, it would work just fine, until the system was restarted, at which point, if it was within an OU that had our GPO to apply the latest JRE (in this case, the EXACT same installer, same version etc) the Software installation policy would actually run (which it shouldn't and didn't with previous JRE installers) and would mess up the JRE on the system. In add/remove programs, the expected JRE version would be listed, and the control panel applet icon would be present, but the browers (any browser) would act as though the JRE was not installed and clicking on the Java control panel applet would generate a message that says something to the effect of "Application not found". Also, trying to remove the JRE via add/remove programs also seems to cause an "Application not found" error message. I've found that I had to remove a registry key (though I can't remember it right at this moment) to get rid of the "Application not found" error messages before I can manually uninstall the JRE and reinstall properly.
I think there's something wrong with the MSI installer, namely that it doesn't seem to check properly for existing versions of the JRE when processed via a Software Installation GPO.
My current work around is to exclude JRE from the base install, allowing our GPO to perform the installation, (which works, even after several restarts) but that's not ideal and it's not how these installers used to work.
    OS - Win7 Enterprise 32bit AND 64bit
    JRE versions - 6U35 and 7U7.
    Please advise.

I have encountered a similar situation as well. Deploying new systems with OEM (factory) installed 64-bit Windows 7 SP1 Professional operating system that also has a pre-installed Java on the system. Have a GPO based install for Java 7 Update 7 which seems to install just fine (over an older version of Java 7) but subsequent attempts to use Java in an IE9 browser results in no Java. If you go to the Oracle (Java) page to show what version of Java is on the system it tells you to download the latest. A similar problem happens with the install of Java 6 Update 35 as well.

  • THE SUN JVM IS NOT INSTALLED

when i open a page with java on it, it is not viewable. instead, i get this error message: THE SUN JVM IS NOT INSTALLED: CLICK TO INSTALL
so i click to install, but download is 108MB. i was told by a friend that all i need is a 14MB download, but dont know how to find it.
another friend told me that i need J2SDK, but that's a 165MB download. then i emailed Sun, and they said i just need JAVA VIRTUAL MACHINE and not J2SDK, but when downloading JAVA VIRTUAL MACHINE, i get JAVA RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT SE v 1.4.2_06 with 108MB.
    other things i tried downloading:
-J2SE SDK which is supposed to be 14MB and i keep getting JAVA2RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT SE v1.4.2_06 which is 108mb.
    j2re-1_4_2_xx-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe.
    -J2SDK SE v 1.4.2_06 by clicking:
For Windows, choose "Windows Online Installation" for the quickest download and installation on a machine connected to the Internet. The default download size is 48.6MB, which is the maximum download. The size may decrease if features are deselected, to a minimum of 14.3MB.'
but what downloaded was not 14MB, it was 165MB.
I need java only for viewing certain parts of pages, nothing more, so 165MB seems crazy. i try to install only certain parts by checking 'do not install this now', but it gets installed anyway. there seems to be no way to only install a portion of the download. and the strangest thing is that i once had java, so where did it disappear to?
how can i just get the 14 mb download. i've tried EVERYTHING.
can anyone help? i've spent HOURS being challenged by this.

you just solved the problem, caffeine! you're the man (or gal) !!!!!
i clicked on: Online Installer and downloaded: http://jdl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=9811
which is now (in properties on the install icon), noted as j2re-1_4_2_06-windows-i586-p-iftw 1.35 MB.
FYI: add/remove programs still says 108MB.
i'm still having a bit of trouble understanding this concept (could be my ADD) so to clarify...you saying that Add Remove Programs contains only an estimate of the size of an install program after installation, not the download size. i just assumed they were the same size. An install program is usually compressed. During installation, files inside the install program are uncompressed and copied to the appropriate locations on your hard drive , meaning that even tho i am downloading something of 1.35MB, those 1.35MB are compressed, and so when i uncompress them (by installing them on machine) the file size is increased? how can 1.35MB increase to approx. 108MB? and in the end, is this taking up 1.35MB or 108MB on my hard drive. (you say 108 is an estimate. but 1.35 is so different than 108, what kind of estimate is that?)
    and finally,
    - why do some friends have this noted as 14MB in THEIR add/remove programs.
    - why do i have 1.35 and not 14MB (which is what most people have).
Most of the files for the JRE are copied to C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_06. If you want to see the size of that folder and its contents right click on the folder (j2re1.4.2_06) and select properties. when i go to the actual folder, it says 33.7 MB. now i'm doubly confused as i thought it was 1.35MB.
By the way I believe you have downloaded and installed the JRE 1.4.2_06. yes i have, but i dont think i need the whole Java Runtime Environment just to view apps, do i? whenever i click on a download (like yours, for instance) the link leads to download of JRE 1.4.2_06. how can i get rid of what's not needed. again, i only need JAVA TO VIEW JAVA APPS.
are you exhausted yet??? (sorry, i really am trying to understand this).
    thanks soooooooooo much caffeine!

OK, fond the issue in the msi file. Do the following steps to fix the issue:
Download the mst that fixes the issue: http://www.notmyfault.ch/downloads/AppV5_SP3Fix.zip
Extract the mst file and copy it into the same folder as your msi file
Run the following command: msiexec /i YourAppvPackage.msi TRANSFORMS=AppV5_SP3Fix.mst
If you want to run it unattended, add /qb as parameter. Make sure your current directory is the one that contains the msi/mst or just add the full path to your msi and mst. Don't rename your msi, use the original name that has been created by the sequencer.
Let me know if that fixes your issue.

  • Error while installing JRE 6 update 6: jvm.dll error

Hello, I am just a normal user of Java, I am no programmer but knew of nowhere else to post this. While installing the latest Java at the period where it says "Registering Java Runtime Environment" an error pops up saying "Error: no 'client' JVM at C:\Program Files\Java\jre 1.6_._._\bin\client\jvm.dll". This error appears everytime I try to install Java. I have tried deleting the deployment.properties file, disabling any malware/virus blockers, I have made sure each install is a clean one, and while watching the ...\bin\client folder, I see that near the beginning of the install it makes a jvm.dll, but when it gets to the "applying patches" part of the install it changes the jvm.dll to a RT~~~ temporary file, but by the time it reaches the end of the install it never changes it back to jvm.dll. I have tried manually renaming it, and putting a working jvm.dll in the folder from another computer; all to no avail. I have also tried installing older versions of Java. I don't know what else to do. I am running Windows Vista SP1, and Java used to work, but I tried to update from 1.6 update 5 to 1.6 update 6, and the problems began. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

welcome to SDN, could you please paste the detailed installation log? we cant help you until you provide detailed log.

  • Forms 10g rel 1( 9.0.4 ) vs SUN JVM 1.5

    Hello:
From SUN site you can read :
    "Changes in 1.5.0_06
The full internal version number for this update release is 1.5.0_06-b05 (where "b" means "build"). The external version number is 5.0u6.
    Security Enhancements
Prior to this update, an applet or application could specify the version of the JRE on which it would run. This has changed. All applets are executed with the latest JRE version. Unsigned Java Web Start applications that specify a version other than the latest trigger a warning, requiring explicit user permission before the application will run. Signed Java Web start applications are not affected. "
Assuming that our customer will use SUN JVM , NOT Oracle JInitiator.
We have seen that if in a client machine it is installed SUN JVM 1.4.2_10 ( certified ) AND SUN JVM 1.5 or newer.
there is NO WAY to force Forms 9.0.4 applications to run with SUN JVM 1.4.2_10.
In spite of doing the following settings at formsweb.cfg
    # Parameter related to the version of the Java Plugin
    jpi_mimetype=application/x-java-applet;jpi-version=1.4.2_10
when you run forms 9.0.4 applications from a browser in that machine, SUN JVM 1.5 is mandatory used by the browser.
It seems that IT IS IMPOSSIBLE to tell 9.0.4 to use SUN JVM 1.4.2_10 because SUN prevents it according to the above documentation .

Then, when you look for certification info:
    a) you can get this info for Forms 10g R2

    b) you can get this info for Forms 10g R1

Q2) What are ORACLE plans about certification of SUN JVM 1.5 AND Forms 10g Rel 1 ( 9.0.4 ) ?

    Hi Guys,
I am currently testing our portal with a number of JRE version or Jinitiator and the SUN JRE.
I found some very useful information about changing the registry of the local PC to re-enable specific versioning, see info, below.
I have tested this and it does work, but you need to be careful with Sun JRE versions to ensure that you are on 1.5.0.7 or higher.
Another useful link is this discussion over on the sun forums.
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=730855
    Good Luck
    Scott
We have found a conflict with the Sun JRE 1.4.2.6 and version Sun JRE 1.5.0.6
To get around this conflict a registry key has to be added onto the users PC and the user needs to remove 1.5.0.6 and install 1.5.0.7 or higher. To make matters worse the auto-update feature in version 1.4, if left enabled, will update the user to 1.5.0.6 even thought the latest release from the sun web site is 1.5.0.8 !
Therefore can you add this registry key onto the automated install of the Sun 1.4.2.6 setup as per the instructions below.
Troubleshooting Conflicting JPI Versions on the Desktop:
Per oracle note 368775.1, JRE 1.5 will not allow static versions. In other words version 1.5
may override your required version of 1.4.2. They call it a security feature, but it can reek
havoc with oracle forms. This section addresses a possible workaround.
If your users either need to run JPI 1.5 for any reason, here is the workaround to force
BANNER to use ONLY version 1.4.2.
If you launch forms and in the java console it shows version 1.5.X, perform the following
    steps.
    1. Make a backup of the windows registry
    2. Edit the registry
    3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\
    4. Create a new directory by highlighting the key above and pressing <RIGHT
    CLICK>/<NEW KEY>
    5. Rename the key to [Java Deployment]
    6. Highlight the new key created in step 5 and press <RIGHT CLICK>/<NEW KEY>
    7. Rename this new value to [Policy]
    8. Highlight the new key created in step 7 and press <RIGHT CLICK>/<NEW DWORD>
    9. Rename this DWORD to “EnableSecureStaticVersioning”
Re-launch forms and verify via the java console that the desktop is returning 1.4.2.
