Installing Latest Java Runtime
I'm running OS X 10.10.2 and want to update my Java runtime to the latest (Java SE Runtime Environment 8u31), since the one installed (1.6 as below) is very old and may have exploitable flaws:
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-466.1-11M4716)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-466.1, mixed mode)
However, I recall that installing the latest had caused Adobe Photoshop to stop working and hence I had to install the above distribution from Apple instead. My question is:
Has anybody running the latest Java runtime seen any issues with their Photoshop or Minecraft (or any other software) installations?
And, if I upgrade to the latest, should I uninstall the older 1.6 version completely, to prevent any possible security holes from being exploited or would I need the older version too, for compatibility or anything else?

FWIW, both JREs can exist without any issues and there's no need to remove them or any other Java components that are installed when installing OSX. Just leave them in place and worry about other things.
Do note that when installing OSX, only the JRE isn't installed; all the other Java components are installed.

Safari keeps telling me I need to install the Java Runtime Environment
After "upgrading" to Yosemite, I keep getting a pop-up window that says "To view this content, you need to install the Java Runtime Environment." I followed the link to install the latest version of Java, but keep getting the warning. It even pops up when there are no Safari windows open. I've turned Java off and still get it. It's annoying because I have to clear the window to continue surfing and it crashes Safari when I'm watching a video full-screen.
Any ideas?Most likely, you have either the Facebook video calling plugin or the "NexDef" plugin for watching baseball streams. Both depend on the Java runtime distributed by Apple. If you no longer need the plugin, remove it. Otherwise, install Java.

Safari 8 error: "...you need to install the Java Runtime Environment"
Ever since upgrading to Yosemite and Safari 8, I continually get the error "To view this web content, you need to install the Java Runtime Environment" and, although I did do so the first time I got the error, and Java tells me I do have the latest version installed and running, I continue to get this error constantly.
Is there a way to stop this, or at least find out what content is causing it? I can't put my finger on any particular content that causes the error.This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
java -version
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
If the Apple Java runtime is installed and up to date, you should get three lines of output below what you entered, the first of which is this:
java version "1.6.0_65"
Is that what you get? You can then quit Terminal. -

I am sorry to ask this but for some reason the search feature won't work so that I can find the answer that has been posted to this question. So I guess there are two problem. I type in the question and I see that there are solutions to view but my computer won't go to the answer. I am just going to re-ask.

To open “Java Preferences,” you need to install a Java runtime, but you are not connected to the Internet. I have tried links that people have put on other discussions but all i get is a black screen please help!!

I'm having 10.8.3 and today 18-Apr Thursday I had installed latest java 7 update. Now when ever I test java page it just redirects the page to Java download on both Firefox and safari. I tried deleting the cache from Java Sec Panel - temp ile but still same prob.

I just upgraded to Yosemite on my 2010 MacBook Pro. When I reboot I get the message "To view this web content, you need to install the Java Runtime Environment" and I've also seen the same pop-up once while running OpenOffice. And now while composing this post.
Yes - I followed the link and installed the Oracle version of Java, version 8, and the test page confirms that I have the current version running.
I read some threads on discussions.apple.com but didn't like the answers.

In MAC 10.5.8 I see that latest Java version is 1.5.0_30, can I install latest Java 1.6 version in MAC if yes, how can I install that?
This is a User-to-User forum. We do not have any knowledge into what Apple will or will not do.
However, based on past history, it is unlikely Apple will invest anything except critical security updates into Mac OS X 10.5. I could be wrong.
If you really REALLY need Java 1.6 on your Mac, you should consider upgrading to a newer version of Mac OS X. -

Every few minutes the message comes up on my screen. To view this web content, you need to install the Java Runtime Environment. Is the new iOS running with java. if not how do i stop messages?
Troubleshooting:
I have since unchecked the option Enable Java content on the browser in System Preferences > Java > Security - I will report back if the prompt still reappears, but I think it should be gone now.
Follow up:
I have since sent a feedback to Apple and I recommend you guys send it too, more people reporting will get Apple's attention on the issue.
Issue:
For me, this issue started after updating to Yosemite, I keep getting a prompt window on Chrome 38.0.2125.122 with a message "To view this web content you need to install the Java Runtime Environment, but I do have Java installed."

How do you install the java runtime environment

I would suggest reading the readme file that comes with the JRE and buying a good introductory book to Java.
