Installing Leo over Tiger: is this wise?

hi guys
wondering whether there have been good successes of installing Leo over Tiger. What would be the best approach to do this so all my system info isn't lost in the upgrade?
cheers and appreciate any advice
ab

Hi
Just done this on 24 macs (including a server). Mixture of MacBooks and iMac Aluminiums. A MacPro as the Server. All 10.4.10. Straight forward upgrade to 10.5.1 for the clients using NetBoot and then upgraded to 10.5.4. Apart from one iMac which had drive/directory problems all working fine.
However this was in an office environment - Word, Mail and some low level database work. In a Design Studio environment I would have archived/installed followed by an application reinstall where needed.

  • Install Leopard over tiger from cd, overwrite or update?

I want to install leopard on my macbook with tiger 10.4.8 from cd.
Can i install leopard from cd on my macbook without overwriting everything.
So when i install leopard over my tiger, will it overwrite everything else or will it update the os with all files and setttings in tact?

    Hi gizeh12,
I'd recommend backing up (on an external HD, CD, DVD, thumb drive, etc) any important data. While the upgrade option is designed to preserve all of your data, settings and applications, Apple strongly recommends (as do many users on these boards) that you always maintain a current backup of your data. While the percentage is very small that you'll have a hardware or system failure during the upgrade, it's always better to be prepared then in panic mode.

  • Install Leopard over Tiger Server

    Hi,
I want to "archive and install" Leopard over existing Tiger Server. Will not be installing the server version of Leopard, just the normal OS.
Are there potential problems (other than the usual suspects) with doing a simple "archive and install" over the existing Tiger --server-- OS? Can I just do new install without sinking the ship? (Fairly experienced w/macs, know the usual routine re OS installs but am shaky when it comes to server stuff)
    Thanks,
    Ron W.

Actually the Server version is only required if you are going to be backing up your server over the network. If you run Retrospect on the server itself, you can get by with the Workgroup edition. The developer has a chart that explains it all:
    http://www.emcinsignia.com/products/smb/retroformac/comparison/
I don't recall the details, but I even think there was an upgrade path from the Desktop version to the Workgroup version, although I had to call the developer and specifically ask for it. Regardless, the prices aren't that bad. Check smalldog.

  • Installing Leopard over Tiger: "MacOs X cannot start up from this [volume]"

That's the message I get on an iMac dual 2-GHz. Each partition has a yellow '!' with the message "MacOs X cannot start up from this [volume]" (I think it says volume) not 'cannot be installed on this..."
Trouble is, it says this about the current 10.4.11 start-up volume. Is this a GUID partition map thing? Any ways around it?
    TIA,

That's easy to test. Launch Disk Utility, select that drive (not volume) in the column on the left, and look for "Partition Map Scheme" at the bottom of the window.
    Any ways around it?
If it's not already GUID, you'll need to repartition the drive. That will erase everything on it.

  • Help - tried to install leopard over tiger on iBook G4 and cannot boot up

My ibook G4 apparently does not have enough disk space to enable me to install leopard; shame, BUT in process of finding this out I cannot restart in Tiger - machine spends 3-4 mins trying then powers down to black screen.
    Any help/advice gratefully received...
    Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Do you have a Backup?
Do you have a bootable external drive?
Do you have another Mac around so you could use FW Target Mode to clear some space...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
If none of the above, then using your Install Disk to Erase everything and start over completely is about the only ting left.
Due to temporary files, RAM Discs, VM, you need twice what they say minimum to install... 20 GB free.

  • Can I just install Leopard over Tiger?

I have an OS 10.4 Tiger MacBook Pro and I'm thinking about upgrading it to Leopard. What happens when you do that? Does the installer wipe out everything on your HD giving you a blank system where you have to reinstall all your apps and so on, or does it sort of upgrade the infrastructure, leaving your apps and files in place?
I haven't run into too many instances where I couldn't run something because I don't have the latest OS, but there have been a few. Would I be better off waiting a while and just buying a new machine when the time comes?
I have a lot of stuff like Photoshop and music software. I also have various development tools like XCode and Eclipse. I also have drivers for stuff like my scanner and digital camera and whatnot.
Thanks for any info on this topic.
    Thanks!

Absolutely! I did it that way on both my MBPs with perfect success.
Just be sure to backup Tiger onto an external drive for several reasons:
    1 Stuff happens
2 You may want to keep some old Tiger stuff, and if you use a cloner for the backup, you can always boot into it and use it.
On each of my two MBPs, I created a small partition for Tiger and cloned Tiger onto it. I use the larger partition for my TM backups.
I have been using both MBPs running Leopard since a short time after Leopard was released and have not experienced any of the issues others have had. Also both my systems are up-to-date with the exception of the latest Safari.

  • Ok to install Snow Leo over 10.5.8?

I typically always wipe and install fresh. But in the case, I just don't have the time or backup ability to do so. I would much rather just try installing Snow Leo over Leopard. Is this a good or bad idea? I know a lot of people do it, so it must be ok. But I've NEVER done it this way before because I feel a clean install is always best.
My iMac is out of warranty... so I suppose I could crack it open, install a new bigger HDD, and mount my old one in an external case? But again... there is a risk in opening it up. I'm handy and savvy enough to do it I think. I need a "spudger" tool I think they are called (from iFixIt).
However, it sure would be nice if installing over top of what I have now would work ok. I just don't have time to mess with reinstalling all of my Audio Plugins for Pro Tools, etc. I will take a lot of time that I don't have.
    Thanks!

    a Brody...
The drag for me, is that NOT ONE SINGLE EXTERNAL that I have has the ability to connect to another in a daisy chain. I have three externals (2 USB, 1 FW), plus, I need a FW port for my Pro Tools interface. So I have to unplug my FW HDD to use Pro Tools, or leave my interface on at all times just to run the FW HDD. I was thinking of buying a FW 400 to 800 adapater. The ideal situation for me, would be to have two 2TB USB HDD's daisy chained off one port (which would require buying two 2TB HDD's and one dual enclosure, or two singles that can daisy chain off each other, then back up my current internal to one of those, wipe and install Snow Leo on the built 320gig HDD that I have now, and run most everything from the externals.
*It's a drag that so many JBOD and RAID servers are eSATA out only, and that the iMac's don't use this as an input. Maybe an eSata to USB converter would work?
*Another issue is that some of my externals are SATA and some are IDE. Heck, I have so many hard drives that work lying around... that I could have a TON of external capacity if I were able to connect all my IDE's together as one giant drive!
I currently run Windows 7 with Parallels from an external, and it's fine. But I'm not sure how much slower it runs this way. Heck, I even have Snow Leo installed on a USB Partition just for testing. But I'm convinced that it's not as fasts or as good then if installed on the main internal HDD. Plus, What can I do with it? It's on a USB HDD, on a partition?
So, just to install Snow Leo, I'm looking at the expense of two 2TB hDD's, plus an external. Plus when finished, I'll have all these other HDD's laying around that I won't have a use for. Unless I just buy a single TB external, back up to that, then buy another external enclosure that will house the three drives I have now, allowing me to RAID them all together as one giant drive?
I'm just not sure what to do, because this sort of thing is outside of my knowledge.

By installing, do you mean the progress bar is stuck? Since this has been reported more than once recently, it's probably a server issue at the moment.

  • Install 10.6.8 over Tiger Intel to Continue Using Sophos

I am currently using Sophos for Mac Free Edition 8.0.21C on my iMac Ma200LL/A Core Duo 2gigs, 2gigs of ram. As of April 2014 Sophos will only support 10.6.8 + above with version 9. No new virus definitions will be available, but I can continue to scan my computer for existing definitions. I still enjoy using Tiger Intel, fulfills all my requirements, runs very fast on my iMac Core Duo. As an alternative shall I think about using ClamXav 2.2.1 the last version for Tiger Intel that still offers the newest virus definitions as well as current system scanning. I think Sophos is the best because of its reputation in the enterprise sector. Or might it be time to install 10.6.8 over Tiger Intel, then continue using Sophos to be optimally safe on the internet? Thanks, Ken.

    Ken Kline wrote:

I guess I'm a bit confused by what you mean by support.
I'm sure you realize that Apple hasn't supported it since Sep 2009 and there won't be any software updates beyond ClamXav 2.2.1. The scan engine will continue to work and could possibly be updated by you with some degree of difficulty. The signature updates are the only thing that will continue and there are even plans to improve the OS X coverage that is TBD. The only danger is that the ClamAV® folks did disable engine 0.94 back in 2009 with no warning, so hopefully that won't happen again.

  • Installing Lion over Mountain Lion-Is this possible?

I have a MacBookAir5,2 model with Mountain Lion pre-installed. However, we are using Lion in our environment. I tried booting off of a Lion cd a I received a circle with a slash running through it. Is there any way to install Lion on MacBook Air models with Mountain Lion pre-installed?
    Thanks.

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but we really only have one Macbook Air with lion preinstalled. So, would I need to install lion on to an external using another Macbook Air with similar drivers? Does it matter if I install lion on to the external using a macbook pro instead of an air? How would I go about doing that? Thanks.

  • Issues Installing OS X Tiger 10.4.8 On my macbook with the restore CD's

    Hello-
Im trying to install Os X Tiger on my Macbook's Hard Drive.I'm relitivly new to Apple and OS X.All Details-
I have a Macbook Version 1,1 Intel Core Duo 2.0ghz with Vista Home basic Installed (no OS X) I have created a Mac OS X Extended Journaled Partition on my hard drive thats 32.2 GB.My hard drive is 120GB, and Vista has about 78GB.When I try and install OS X tiger 10.4.8 using the macbooks restore cd's, after the languge screen it says that Mac OS X cannot be installed and wants me to choose a startup disc. Why is this? Im guessing maybe OS X needs more Space or something, or the Resore Cd's, Which I bought off of ebay (no apple store nearby) are not the right kind (and yes, I am sure they are genuine Apple) .Here is what they say:
    MacBook
Mac OS X Install Disc 1 (and 2)
    Mac OS Version 10.4.8
    AHT Version: 3A114
    2Z6981-5946-A
Can Someone tell me if these are the right ones, or tell me what I should do?
I thank everyone for their Time and Help
    Have a Great Day!

If you bought the disks on eBay, there is no reason to think they will work. Tiger disks come in two flavours: first, the retail black disks with silver Xs; second the machine-specific grey disks with white writing. The former are PPC only and won't work with Intel. The latter will only work on the specific model of Mac they shipped with originally - that could be a particular model of PowerBook, a particular model of iMac, anything. You'd need to know if the disks will work with your particular model of Mac.
What happened to the original disks that came with the computer? If you bought it used, ask the seller for them - they belong with the Mac. Otherwise, if they are lost, you can ask Apple to send you replacement disks for a fee. (I've seen $30 quoted but I don't know personally.) If the computer originally came with Leopard, you're out of luck - Tiger can't be installed on a machine which originally shipped with Leopard.
If you do have the right disks, hopefully somebody else will answer your question because I don't have Intel and don't know!

And, if your G3 doesn't have a DVD drive, you may want to order Tiger CDs by Media Exchange Program.

  • Trying to install OS X Tiger on G3 Firewire

I got this and it had Tiger installed on it. But the hard drive was only 10 gig. So I bought a new 80 Toshiba 2.5 IDE hard drive for it. I put it in and am trying to install tiger on it. It goes for a minute saying its back tracing and some other stuff. I am not really sure I have never installed a mac system before. this is where it gets stuck.
    Kernal Version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.6.1: Tue Mar 7 16:59:14 PST 2006; root:xnu-792.9.22.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC
    panic:We are hanging here...
Please anybody have any idea how to get this to install?
    Thanks

If you still have the old drive with Tiger installed on it, you can buy an external 2.5" drive enclosure, with firewire connection. Cost will be about $40. Put the old drive in the enclosure, attach the drive by firewire, and power on the drive. Start the Powerbook, holding down the option key, making the computer search for usable drives. Select the external.
You'll need to download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner. With disk utility, format the new drive to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then clone the 10gb drive to the new drive.
You could also swap the drives locations, power on normally, then do the above cloning.
Do considering getting a retail version of Tiger, incase of any future problems where the disc will be necessary. Since the system requirements for Leopard are unknown at the present time, and probably won't be released until Leopard is released, I can't say wait for it.
    Here's a link to a possible enclosure
