Installing Leopard on new iMac, installation just goes on and on...

Hi there!
Just bought a new iMac 24" with OS X 10.4 installed. I ordered the Leopard upgrade and installed it today, and experienced the already documented problem where login password is seemingly accepted but after a few seconds the login window appears again. Recommended solution was to "Archive and Install installation (and select Preserve Users and Network Settings)". I did that, and have now been staring the installation screen for six hours... surely it doesn't take that long to re-install? Installation process started just fine, but after that, no progress. What could I try next? I tried searching the forum and all I found was that one shouldn't interrupt installation process or it would screw things up, so I'm a bit baffled what to do next. Thanks for any thoughts!

Apple knew there was a problem....
I believe that this is a technical forum, not a gossip page.
I suggest you take your inferences elsewhere - maybe call Apple and talk to them.
Either help pull the cart or get out of the way
Thank you

  • Re-installing Leopard on new iMac

Not sure if this is the right place - I have just got a new iMac. I transferred all info (but not applications) from my iBook, and it's just a nightmare - permissions all over the place, loads of keychain problems, etc. I want to start again with a fresh iMac and do it all manually - any advice?

One last question. My iTunes library was shared between users on my last mac. I have transferred music over but rating etc. haven't come with the library. These seem to be in the individual user accounts for each user - I've tried transferring these files with no success - I understand this is an iTunes question but wondered if you could help - where is that information stored on the mac.

  • I have BOTH Tiger and Leopard installed in my new iMac now .... and ...

Yesterday I decided to take the risk - I formated my iMac's HD, made three partitions - one for Tiger, one for Leopard and another for the CS3 usage. I installed Tiger without the 1.1 upgrade but installed ALL upgrades including 1.1 and 1.3 in Leopard.
All day today I tried different apps under Leopard including iTunes, iPhoto, Photoshop and illustrator CS3. So far so good ... haven't got any serious problem, such as sys freeze or crush, yet.
It was actually a wonderful delight to know that I could easily access all my files from each OS without reboot.
I love Leopard but was a bit disappointed to find out it's not as fast and stable as Tiger. I see the rainbow ball spinning quite often in Leopard (rarely see it in tiger.) The internet connection drop very often while working perfectly in Tiger. The most annoying thing is: my 5 month old Canon printer does not work under Leopard. Whenever I need to print anything I have to reboot and login to Tiger.
Another very strange problem which occurred in Leopard really puzzled me.
I was going to install the diver for my printer in Leopard this morning. Before I did it, I went to Disc Utility to verify and repair permissions. I read a article somewhere here that says one should do this verify and repair permission task every time BEFORE and AFTER install or upgrade anything. Although I never actually understand the concept of repairing permissions and why it's necessary to do it all the time ( can anyone kind enough to make it a bit easier to understand? ... IF the system can check and repair the error itself, why can't it do it automatically without us order the task EVRY TIME we install or upgrade anything?) , I followed the advice anyway.
The whole process of 'verify and repair permission' took about 20 minutes. During the process it concerned me why it took so long since my Leopard is 'fresh' - newly installed in a formated partition without any 3rd party app installed. When the result came out I found myself saying ' OH MY G**!!!' ....
    Have a look:
*There were more than 100 repaired items!!! why?* (What you see above is only part of it)
I don't understand what ACL is and why this has happened ... Can anyone kind enough to help me understand it?)
    Thanks a lot!!

Well, here's what Wikipedia has to say about ACLs.

  • I just installed iLife on my new Imac version 10.8.2 and now I can't open my iPhoto app.  It says that I Photo is damaged or incomplete.  What do I do to restore my iPhoto and pictures!

I just installed iLife on my new iMac 10.8.2 version and now I can't open my iPhoto app.  It says it is damaged or incomplete.  What can I do to get it back along with all of my picutures?  I was told by an Apple employee at my one to one training that it was OK to install iLife to get the iDVD that I wanted. Help!

I have installed iLife a few times and because of photostream, the version on the disc must be updated.  Software update usually takes care of it.  It sounds like you installed an old version over a new version.  I've not tried that.
You have a late 2012 machine, if you open the Mac app store from the dock, you should be able to go to the purchased tab and download/install the right version of iphoto.  Honestly, you should not have used that disc on this new of mac or at least only installed iDVD & iWeb but not garageband, iphoto, and iMovie.
If the Mac App Store shows iphoto as installed already, drag the app from your applications folder to the trash and reinstall it again from the Mac App Store.  That is the version you need.  You may find garageband and imovie have similar problems.
    good luck.
PS.  your photos are in your photo folder in your home folder.  don't touch those, I'm talking about the app "iphoto" in the applications folder.

  • Logic Studio won`t install on my new iMac

When I try to install Logic Studio on my new iMac, it just stops and say "Unknown failure detected" and the whole process is interrupted.
    Does anyone know why?
I have installed Logic Studio with the same serialnumber on my MacBook Pro....

As the error states correctly: your computer is new, has an Intel CPU and Lion. You were using a version of Logic released in Feburary 2006 - 5 years old. That one can't run on a different CPU, new OS version, new hardware.
    Time to get an upgrade:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB798Z/A
Apples upgrades don't require to install older versions, clean install, just the old serial number/XSKey is needed for the installation.

  • Installing Leopard on an iMac G5 currently running Panther!

    HI,
I heard a rumour that I might not be able to install Leopard on my iMac G5 currently running fine on 10.3.9 Panther, at least, not before I install Tiger. Is this true? I had hoped I could just buy Leopard and install that. Surely I don't have to track down a copy of Tiger and install that first?
Only reason particularly for upgrade is have bought some new iPods and they won't work with Panther :-(!!
Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Just install Leopard directly. I suggest an Archive and Install and then migrate your stuff back. Many old apps and programs will not run with Leopard. Sherlock, to name one. Also be careful of your 3rd party apps. Some have been trouble.
Use SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to make a full bootable backup of Panther and then test it by booting into it. You then have the best of both worlds - a dual-boot system with Panther and Leopard.
If you partition your external drive for Panther in a small partition and leave the rest for TimeMachine backups, you are really set.
I have my external TM drive with Tiger in a small partition. It boots and once and a while I run it to keep it from getting lonely

I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

  • My iMac monitor just goes black

I have a 2009 27inch iMac with an external Samsung monitor.
Out of the blue, the iMAC MONITOR just goes black. Like it went to sleep or something.
This has happened 4 times in the last 2 weeks. (luckily I can restart the computer because the external Samsung still works.
I restart the computer and the monitor works fine again.
    Help.
    Thanks.

    Hi.
    Screen goes totally black.
The good news is, I read around and was advised to turn off the computer and unplug it, and plug it back in and start up. That seems to have fixed it. So far, so good.
    Thanks.

  • How to install Leopard in my iMac if it has no DL-DVD player?

How to install Leopard in my iMac if it has no DL-DVD player?
    My eMac is:
    eMac G4/1.25 (USB 2.0) with 2GB RAM

Most PPC Macs cannot boot OSX from USB, they need Firewire... that being said, out of 13 PPC Macs I had one that booted from USB Drives, including Flash Drives, it was my eMac/1.42GHz as a matter of fact, USB drives would show as a boot choice if I held the Option/alt key at bootup, (nowhere else), but It lost that ability when I reset the NVRAM.
The USB boot workaround that works for some is...
Connect the drive to your machine, and find out which partition the OS X system is installed on. I usually find this by going to Disk Utility and looking at the info for the partition on the USB disk with OS X. That is, disk2s3 is usually for a USB disk with no OS 9 drivers installed that is the second disk disk. disk3s9 might be a USB disk with OS 9 drivers that is considered the third disk. There are other ways of finding this out, but in my case, my disk is disk2s3 (the 3 on the end will come into play soon).
Start up the machine in Open Firmware (this is the fun part). Hold Command-Option-F-F right after the machine is turned on.
Here is the moment of truth. If this step does not work, I have had very limited success getting a machine to boot off USB2. In Open Firmware, type devalias, and you should get a list as output. In this list, look for ud, usually below where you see hd (ud is "USB Disk," I presume). If found, it will usually have beside it /pci@f2000000/usb@1/disk1, or something similar. Again, if you see this, I have not had this fail yet.
Now type printenv boot-device, which will usually get you output of boot-device hd:,\\:tbxi. (See where this is going yet?)
Type setenv boot-device ud:3,\\:tbxi where the number after the colon corresponds to that partition number we found in step two. You should get an ok back.
Type printenv boot-device, and you should see the change displayed already. Something like:
    boot-device        ud:3,\\:tbxi        hd:,\\:tbxi"

You'd need to clone the Install Disc to a Flash Drive, or make a DMG of it then Restore it to the Flash drive.

  • New Build ... Windows Update Never Shows Updates. Checking for Updates just goes round and round

I've got a brand new installation of Server 2008 Standard, full with GUI and I've setup the server with a public IP so I can get to the internet.  Even tested getting to Dell Support website.
But when checking for updates the "Checking for updates" just goes round and round.  It never stops and shows me what updates are available.
I'm trying to create an image of this build for testing purposes.
I ran into the same issue when I was doing a VM test and only had a private IP.  I thought I wasn't able to get to Windows Update using our internal proxy with the private IP.  But now there seems to be more of an issue.
I've already setup the Windows Update service the same way we have for 2003 and 2008 ... Automatic and started.
    Any suggestions?

Hold down the option key during start up - you will be given the choice of which partition to use (Macintosh HD or Windows). I am having the same problem - Windows 7 seems to have installed but it goes to a blank black screen and there is nothing to do but force a reboot. I too have an i3 iMac... Windows 7 32-bit from original disc.

  • Help - I just purchased CS6 and downloaded onto the new iMac I just bought. I cannot get it to open

I just purchased CS6 and downloaded onto the new iMac I just bought. I cannot get it to open. I think I may have purchased a windows version in error.  When I clicked on "DesignStandard_CS6_LS16.exe I am told the application can't open because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OS X.  Does anyone know how to contact Adobe directly?  I keep going around and around on their site and have found no e-mail or phone number to contact them to get this straightened out.  Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks so much out there for any assistance!

Trying to contact Adobe over the (long) weekend is not likely to get you very far.
