Installing leopard osx on imac g4

I recently was given an 15 inch iMac G4 with 256 MB RAM and 800 MHz processor and was running OS X 10.3.9. I upgraded the RAM to 512 MB and installed Leopard using a firewire connection with my MacBook. I can boot from the MacBook Leopard but the iMac will not boot or seem to find the Hard Drive. I can see the Hard Drive on my MacBook with Leopard installed on it. All I get on my iMac is a "finder" with a question mark. Is there any suggestions or tips about how I can get my iMac to run properly using Leopard????

You can't do it that way, because one Mac is Intel and the other is PowerPC. And it's not because the OS installation is different. It's because of something more obscure called the +partition map scheme+ of the hard drive.
For a drive to be bootable on a PowerPC Mac, the +partition map scheme+ needs to be +Apple Partition Map+. For an Intel Mac, it is called +GUID Partition Table+. An Intel Mac can actually boot a drive that is either +Apple Partition Map+ or +GUID Partition Table+; however, when you run Installer to do a Mac OS X installation, if you are using an Intel Mac (such as a MacBook) to run the installation, it will insist that the +partition map scheme+ of the drive is +GUID Partition Table+.
Therefore, because you used FireWire Target Disk Mode to run the installation from the MacBook targeting the iMac hard drive (as its external drive), the +partition map scheme+ ended up being +GUID Partition Table+. A PowerPC Mac that has Tiger or later can access a drive that is +GUID Partition Table+, but can only boot the drive if it is +Apple Partition Map+.
What you may be able to do instead, is the following.
Use the MacBook to install a fresh Leopard installation onto an external drive. Restart from it and run Software Update, and make sure it is working. Then restart from the MacBook's own drive again.
Connect the iMac using FireWire Target Disk Mode to the MacBook as you did before. Use the MacBook to erase the iMac's hard drive using Disk Utility. Instead of using the Erase tab, use the Partition tab. Reset the +Volume Scheme+ to *1 Partition*. Click the Options button, and select *Apple Partition Map* there as the +partition map scheme+. Back on the main window, name the volume and set the format to *Mac OS Extended (Journaled)*, and Apply it.
Now, you have the iMac's hard drive with the proper +partition map scheme+ and format. Use a cloning utility, such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, to clone the fresh Leopard installation from the external drive to the iMac's hard drive. Since cloning is done at the volume level, not the drive level, you should get a bootable clone of the Leopard installation on a drive that can be booted by a PowerPC Mac.
Leopard is universal so I think the above method will work. However, there may be complications such as the proper drivers for an 800 MHz iMac G4 not being present in the Leopard installation, because Apple does not officially support that model with Leopard.
Note: To be legal, the Leopard license you are using must not be currently used on another Mac. If the MacBook is currently using that Leopard license, you should not do it for legal reasons.

How to install Leopard in my iMac if it has no DL-DVD player?
    My eMac is:
    eMac G4/1.25 (USB 2.0) with 2GB RAM

Most PPC Macs cannot boot OSX from USB, they need Firewire... that being said, out of 13 PPC Macs I had one that booted from USB Drives, including Flash Drives, it was my eMac/1.42GHz as a matter of fact, USB drives would show as a boot choice if I held the Option/alt key at bootup, (nowhere else), but It lost that ability when I reset the NVRAM.
The USB boot workaround that works for some is...
Connect the drive to your machine, and find out which partition the OS X system is installed on. I usually find this by going to Disk Utility and looking at the info for the partition on the USB disk with OS X. That is, disk2s3 is usually for a USB disk with no OS 9 drivers installed that is the second disk disk. disk3s9 might be a USB disk with OS 9 drivers that is considered the third disk. There are other ways of finding this out, but in my case, my disk is disk2s3 (the 3 on the end will come into play soon).
Start up the machine in Open Firmware (this is the fun part). Hold Command-Option-F-F right after the machine is turned on.
Here is the moment of truth. If this step does not work, I have had very limited success getting a machine to boot off USB2. In Open Firmware, type devalias, and you should get a list as output. In this list, look for ud, usually below where you see hd (ud is "USB Disk," I presume). If found, it will usually have beside it /pci@f2000000/usb@1/disk1, or something similar. Again, if you see this, I have not had this fail yet.
Now type printenv boot-device, which will usually get you output of boot-device hd:,\\:tbxi. (See where this is going yet?)
Type setenv boot-device ud:3,\\:tbxi where the number after the colon corresponds to that partition number we found in step two. You should get an ok back.
Type printenv boot-device, and you should see the change displayed already. Something like:
    boot-device        ud:3,\\:tbxi        hd:,\\:tbxi"

You'd need to clone the Install Disc to a Flash Drive, or make a DMG of it then Restore it to the Flash drive.

  • Installing Leopard on an iMac G5 currently running Panther!

    HI,
I heard a rumour that I might not be able to install Leopard on my iMac G5 currently running fine on 10.3.9 Panther, at least, not before I install Tiger. Is this true? I had hoped I could just buy Leopard and install that. Surely I don't have to track down a copy of Tiger and install that first?
Only reason particularly for upgrade is have bought some new iPods and they won't work with Panther :-(!!
Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Just install Leopard directly. I suggest an Archive and Install and then migrate your stuff back. Many old apps and programs will not run with Leopard. Sherlock, to name one. Also be careful of your 3rd party apps. Some have been trouble.
Use SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to make a full bootable backup of Panther and then test it by booting into it. You then have the best of both worlds - a dual-boot system with Panther and Leopard.
If you partition your external drive for Panther in a small partition and leave the rest for TimeMachine backups, you are really set.
I have my external TM drive with Tiger in a small partition. It boots and once and a while I run it to keep it from getting lonely

  • Why won't my iMac G5 let me install Leopard OSX?

I am desperately trying to install Leopard OS X. It will not let me install and I brought the whole computer to the genius bar and they told me to install more RAM which I proudly did myself. It is still not working. When I put the CD in it lets me click on install then restart. But when the computer restarts all that happens is a gray screen with apple logo and timeclock. The fan races loudly and eventually I just have to shut it down and restart holding the mouse just to get the CD out. HELP PLEASE. I am SO frustrated.
    Terry

First of all, does the new RAM you installed show up in your System Profiler? Are you using a retail copy of Leopard (the one with the starry sky and the big X on it)?
Let us know the answers to the questions and we can take it from there,

  • Installing Leopard on an iMac G5 PowerPC

I just installed a new 160GB HD and 2GB RAM on my dad's old 17' iMac G5 PowerPC.
I get to the install phase and the machine starts to install the OSX BUT after some time it hangs at about "18 min left" and then says "you need to restart your computer". During this time the fan is going like crazy..... I restart the iMac and try again but the same thing happens. I then decided to runt the disc utilities to see if the HD verifies, and it does. Any ideas???? Sounds like it is overheating while installing the OS.
I even brought it outside in the cold (it is 20 deg here in the Boston area) to see of the same thing happens.... but the same thing happened.
The previous 75GB HD did install the same OS witout problems, I just decided to upgrade to 160GB.

What are you using as an install disc? Hopefully it is either the one that came with the machine, or a retail copy of Leopard.

  • Unable to install Leopard onto my iMac G5

This is my first post here so please be patient with me if I do not do a good job explaining my problem.....here we go.
I have a 20" iMac G5 purchased back in 2004. It is what I believe was referred to as a special edition and came with a wireless keyboard and mouse. It currently has the minimum 512 megs of ram (I've ordered 2 Gigs for it yesterday), 150Gig HD, 1.8Ghz (not at the computer right now so cannot confirm the CPU speed). It currently is running OS 10.4.11. Ok, now onto the problem.
I tried to install Leopard Family edition, which I purchased at an Apple Store. I have tried and failed to install 10.5 four times now. The first attempt would not even pass the DVD check. It says the install DVD is damaged. That is not true because it loaded just fine on my wife's 12" Macbook.
In any event, I do have an external HD which is used for backup, via SuperDuper. Therefore, I have not lost data in case you are wondering. Each time I installed I would select the erase and install option. Each time, I get a different error. It will pass the DVD check then fail about 15 minutes into the install. It will give a yellow triangle window and say the Source Media is damamged. Another error in another install attempt says something to the effect that it cannot find something (cannot remember what) on the destination drive.
After these attempt, I reinstalled 10.4 and managed to get the system running again. I repaired permissions and ran the Verify Disk from Disk Utility and everything checks out. I had a technician come help me and ran DiskWarrior and seem to believe the HD and permission are fine.
I have had a few problems prior to the Leopard install, which may be the problem to begin with. Mainly two problems, the computer will not always come out of sleep mode when clicking the mouse and/or keyboard. I also have had many Kernel Panics. These two issues have ocurred over the last year but have increased in frequency. Have not seen a Kernel panic since I reinstalled 10.4.11 but still will not always come out of sleep mode. BTW, I did get a USB keyboard (not apple) and a mac mouse and have been using them since last night.
Ok I will stop here for now. I aplogize for wordiness and disorganization. Please help..

I received my external DVD drive and tried to install Leopard. No success. I get the same error. It appears to fail about the same time. It spends some time doing work before it calculated the estimated install time. Just after it calculated an install time (about 3 hours) that is when I get installation failed error. To me, it would eliminate the internal optical drive.
At this point, I am at a loss of options. I could replace the Hard Drive next I guess. I am beginning to wonder if I should just save my money and buy a refurbished Intel iMac....
I did buy 2 Gigs of RAM (EDGE) which is supposed to be compatible with my system. When I installed it the computer would start buy the screen stays dark. About 30 seconds after startup the cpu fans spin up to full rmp and the computer remains that way until I hold in the power to power down. I tried removing the RAM one at a time and still no joy. I finally removed it and reinstalled the 512 ram and the computer booted no problem. I have already talked with the site I bought it from and I am going to send it back.
If anyone has anymore comments I would be most appreciative for additional help.

  • Installing leopard on G3 iMac??

1 - I have an old vintage g3 iMac that I sometimes use for certain specific applications; three (?) years ago I spruced it up by installing Tiger, now I was thinking of doing the same by installing leopard. is that even a good idea?
2 - unfortunately, the disc drive on the iMac doesn't work; I tried installing leopard via an external FW disc drive, but no good - it just tried and tried to boot from the DVDROM for 40 minutes before I gave up.
3 - I was thinking of trying to burn two DMG files from my Leopard install discs, and then put them (via the network) on the G3 iMac. Is that a good idea? Is it possible to install leopard from DMG files?
    thanks - appreciate any feedback.

nuts! well, that DOES answer my question - even though it's NOT the answer I wanted to hear!
    thanks!
I have to reinstall apple remote desktop on my Mac Pro and see if I can connect to the iMac that way; as of now, I can only connect to the public drop box on the iMac - I have to fool around with the file sharing stuff in the preferences... thanks again...

  • Clean Install Leopard OSX / Optical Drive Not Working

I have a 4 year old 15" MBP and I want to perform a clean install. The problem is that I my optical drive is not working. It reads in any disc for a few seconds and then spits it out. Is there a way to get around this because I need to use my Leopard OSX disc in order to perform a clean install. Thank you.

  • Should I try to install Leopard on an iMac G5 (not intel)

    Hi,
I've looked in to this a bit and it seems I should be able to.
I'm just concerned that while it might not fail, it might not behave brilliantly either!
I've got my Leopard 10.5.8 install disc to hand, my current machine spec should be quoted in the footer to this post.
    Any advice?

Yep - I did on my G4 Powerbook last week and it's fab. Runs faster than Tiger if anything. I took advice from the Low End Mac website and upgraded to the max 2GB RAM first or perhaps it wouldn't have been such a good idea.
I see you've maxed the RAM on yours already - go for it!
I'm waiting for the RAM for my iMac then I will be right behind you

  • Installing Leopard on new iMac, installation just goes on and on...

    Hi there!
Just bought a new iMac 24" with OS X 10.4 installed. I ordered the Leopard upgrade and installed it today, and experienced the already documented problem where login password is seemingly accepted but after a few seconds the login window appears again. Recommended solution was to "Archive and Install installation (and select Preserve Users and Network Settings)". I did that, and have now been staring the installation screen for six hours... surely it doesn't take that long to re-install? Installation process started just fine, but after that, no progress. What could I try next? I tried searching the forum and all I found was that one shouldn't interrupt installation process or it would screw things up, so I'm a bit baffled what to do next. Thanks for any thoughts!

Apple knew there was a problem....
I believe that this is a technical forum, not a gossip page.
I suggest you take your inferences elsewhere - maybe call Apple and talk to them.
Either help pull the cart or get out of the way

  • Installing leopard snow on imac

I can't install Snow Leopard 10.6 on my Mac OS X version 10.5.8. No errors signs, nothing, it just won't install. The imac reads other CD's but not the Sown Leopard??

Did you know you're on a MacBook Air forum? To navigate to the iMac forum please click
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/desktop_computers/imac_intel?view=discus sions&tagSet=1052
However it sounds like your are attempting to upgrade from Leopard 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard 10.6. You will need a upgrade DVD to do that, not other DVD will work. If you are trying to use a friend's Snow Leopard Install disc that came with their computer not only are you attempting to violate the license agreement (theft) you have found it will not work because those discs are machine specific. To upgrade as mentioned you need the upgrade disc for Snow Leopard then simply put it in the iMac's Superdrive and it will lead you through what to do. However before doing ANY major update make sure you backup using Time Machine, SuperDuper and/or Carbon Copy Cloner. Attempting to do a major upgrade without backup is a bit risky, upgrades can go wrong and if you don't have backup you risk losing all of your data and applications.

  • Installing leopard on G5 imac

    Hello,
I just got Leopard in the mail today, but before I open it I was wanting to know a couple things about installing it with my programs:
    1) Will certain programs like iWork '08 and Aperture v1.5.6 stop working? (Along with others like handbrake and isquint)
    2) Is there a way that I can choose, upon installation, to not install front row or photobooth since I dont have an isight or remote?
    Thanks

Can't address the apps you mentioned, but you should get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone before upgrading and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:

  • Installed Leopard on my iMac G-5, bad idea

I have been running OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) for quite a while. A friend tempted me to upgrade to Leopard with their disks. I also wanted to purchase the ScanSnap scanner which needs Leopard to run, as well as Bento 3.0 which also requires Leopard. Well now I feel that upgrading to Leopard was a big mistake!!! Now I don't have iPhone syncing, iCal search capability, iPhoto transfer to my iPhone and no printing on Address book. I still run into some new surprises every day. I had absolutely no problems with Tiger. Could it be my 667 Bus speed or my non Intel hardware? Whatever it is, I'm ready to pull my hair out trying to find the problems. I've spent hours on the discussions reading everything I could and found nothing that worked. Even after subscribing to MacUpdate, it won't open. I also thought of purchasing MobilMe to sync everything but am not sure that would work if I'm having the current problems. I'm ready to go buy a new iMac but am afraid the problems to the new machine will only transfer. Does anyone have a solution. I would return to Tiger but after reading some of the discussions, it may not be possible to go backwards without making even more problems. BTW, already have a lot of scanning done (no problems with the Fujitsu 1500M) but still want to continue so I'm frantically scanning as fast as I can so if I do return to Tiger, I will at least be able to access what I scanned! Sorry I upgraded!! Thought also of going to the local Apple store counter and sharing my stories. No doubt my unit is out of warranty.

A friend tempted me to upgrade to Leopard with their disks.
    What's wrong with this picture?
It is THEIR discs. They are the only ones licensed to use those discs.
Furthermore, if it is really an iMac G5, unless the discs look like * they are not designed to work with your machine. They are only designed to work on the machine whose label is on them. Thus any flaws you see in the installation are due to using the wrong discs. Furthermore the last iMac G5 left the market prior to Leopard's arrival, so if the discs say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM they won't work on your iMac in any case.
Now many also confuse the iMac G5, for iMac Intel. These are totally different beasts, even though externally, they look identical. Look on the base of the iMac in question. If it has an EMC# of: 2104, 2105, 2110, 2114, 2118, 2111, 2133, 2134 it is an iMac Intel, and not an iMac G5. iMacs which look like are iMac Intel as well. Those which may use Leopard Update discs are iMac Intel whose serial number begins: xx742xxxx to xx744xxxx where x can be any letter or number.
If you want Leopard for your Mac, you can usually call Apple Store sales, as they often have discs for sale. But do not use another person's discs. It is against license agreement, unless they remove it from all of their machines.

  • Re-installing Leopard on new iMac

Not sure if this is the right place - I have just got a new iMac. I transferred all info (but not applications) from my iBook, and it's just a nightmare - permissions all over the place, loads of keychain problems, etc. I want to start again with a fresh iMac and do it all manually - any advice?

One last question. My iTunes library was shared between users on my last mac. I have transferred music over but rating etc. haven't come with the library. These seem to be in the individual user accounts for each user - I've tried transferring these files with no success - I understand this is an iTunes question but wondered if you could help - where is that information stored on the mac.
