Installing Lightroom Presets

It seems that the only way to install Lightroom presets is in the develop module while a photo is selected. Not only that, but it seems to immediately apply the newly installed preset to the selected photo when I may not even want it to do so.
It's even more frustrating when installing multiple presets from a collection as it applies every single preset in the collection to the selected photo! My current hardware isn't exactly ideal for Lightroom ... and the result is to sit and wait for some time until every preset in the collection has been applied!!
Surely there is another way, or re-think how this should be implemented in future versions!?
Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark
I’ve never had a problem although I never import other peoples presets.
If I find a nice effect whilst editing in Develop I simply save current settings!

  • Where does LR3 install develop presets?

I ask this question because, on my system, the answer is not obvious:
I have 8 catalogs. Everyone of them is configured to store presets within the catalog. When I examine the contents of the presets folders (different for every catalog) I find that only 1 catalog out of the 8 contains any items in its Develop Presets folder (other than the folder 'User Presets') and these develop presets appear to be the default ones that are shipped and installed with the product. However, all 8 of the catalogs list these default develop presets under the group 'Lightroom Presets' in the left hand panel in Develop mode.
The 'global' lightroom develop presets location, at ~user\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Develop Presets\Lightroom Presets is empty. However the parent folder (Develop Presets) does contain folders for the 3 volumes of the free OnOne PerfectPresets as well as a User Presets folder (not empty). But, those OnOne presets are available only in 1 of the 8 catalogs, and not the same catalog as that referred to above.
How do catalogs, which do not have the Lightroom default develop presets present, find them?
Why can't catalogs find the free OnOne presets which are installed at the architected system (or global) location or any of the User Presets at this location?
Finally, I do have a 'spare' Lightroom Settings folder which does not appear to be connected to any catalog: when I rename it to a garbage name I can find no immediate problem in any of my 8 catalogs. Is it safe to delete this spare Lightroom Settings folder?

This is where I think you are misunderstanding how the "Store presets with catalog" option works. For a start, you cannot configure an individual catalog to use this option.....it is a global Lightroom preference which applies to any and every catalog on that specific system. Once you have slected that option, the effect is that Lightroom will create a "Lightroom Settings" folder in the same folder as the catalog.....so if you have 8 catalogs, and they're all in their own individual folder, you'll eventually end up with 8 x "Lightroom Settings" folders. Keep all 8 catalogs (and preview sub-folders) in the one folder, and you'll get away with just one "Lightroom Settings" folder.
A couple of other things to understand about this option:
    1. On initial creation, the "Lightroom Settings" folder contains only a subset of the main settings folders contained at the default user appdata location....and all the sub-folders are initially empty. Lightroom does NOT copy any presets (Lightroom's own or your User Presets) to the equivalent sub-folder in "Lightroom Settings".
    2. Furthermore, from the second that you select that option, Lightroom will no longer look at the default location for any User Presets that you had.....so the immediate effect is that the User Presets 'disappear' from the Develop Module (they haven't really been deleted, it's just that Lightroom no longer sees them).
    3. When you create a new User Preset after setting that option, it will be stored in the appropriate sub-folder within the "Lightroom Settings" which is specific to the catalog in use at the time, but would not be copied to any other "Lightroom Settings" folders. Easy in that circumstance to end up with each catalog having different user presets available to it, and easy to see maybe why the OnOne presets are only available to one catalog.
    4. And not all Lightroom settings are 'switched' to the "Lightroom Settings" folder, some remain in the default location.
To be honest, unless you have a really good reason to store different presets with different catalogs, I think you're making a big mistake in selecting the 'Store Presets with catalog' option in your multiple catalog situation. I did a write-up on this subject not so long ago for the folks over at Victoria's Lightroom Forums, you might find it worth a read:

  • Missing print templates - Lightroom preset ones

All the preset Lightroom PRINT templates have disappeared.  I see the folder on the left that says Print templates and Lightroom templates and user templates.  If I import templates they show up in user templates as expected but the Lightroom Templates is completely empty - just pops up new folder box.  I have checked preferences and looked for the template folder.  I just has a folder for user templates which seems to be what the problem is.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail.  I also went back and deleted old versions (3,4) and the preferences files and every other file/folder I could find relating to lightroom including catalogs.  I have lightroom installed on both my laptop and Imac.  The problem is occuring on both so it seems that accidently deleting something is unlikely.  I've never looked at the print module before so this may have been going on for a long time.
Any ideas on how to get these.
    <moved by mod from downloading,installing,setting up - kglad>

I assume you mean, Edit / Preferences...  [presets tab] Location: [Show Lightroom Presets Folder]. If you haven't yet saved any print presets of your own, then LR has not yet had any need of a User folder to contain such. So one may not yet have been made.
The easiest way to get LR to do that, (and to be sure that you are looking in the right place) : click the + icon next to Template Browser in Print module.
IOW: save a dummy print preset, doesn't matter about its contents, but enter some very distinctive name and then click Create. By default this should go into "User Templates", which is made as necessary, though you can choose to make a differently named folder if you prefer.
Full path on my Win8.1 is C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Print Templates\User Templates
Then take a look in Explorer and see what has changed - if there's any problem, you can always disk search for whatever distinctive template name you have just entered. Copy your other bought templates alongside this new dummy print preset, restart LR and you should be able to start using any of those. Delete the dummy preset in due course.
(Note that it is quite usual for built-in LR presets to be held somewhere quite different, than user created or user added items. The provided choices such as "(1) 4 x 6" and "custom 1 over 2" may not be findable anywhere on disk, for example.)

  • I am thinking about purchasing the CC for Photography monthly plan. Will I be able to use Lightroom Presets that I have already purchased previously?

I have Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS2. I am thinking about getting the monthly plann for CC. I just wanted to know if I can use all the Lightroom Presets and Photoshop Actions that I have already purchased?

Yes, they will transfer across to the new version of Lr when you install it.

  • Problems installing purchased presets

I follow all the correct download and installation instructions (App sync on etc) but despite successfully installing the new presets, the zip file, containing the actual presets do not download or appear anywhere. So I am left with a preset appearing in my Add Ons, but no zip file to point to when importing the presets into LR.

So there is no recognisable file on the Downloads folder. Is that correct?
The other thing to do is check the following folder /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/[preset or template folder]/[preset or template filename.lrtemplate]. If the presets have installed they should be there.

  • Lightroom Presets Missing

My last Mac crashed, and I ordered a new one.  Went to install Lightroom 3 last night and the disc would not work.  I then downloaded Lightroom 3 online and entered my serial number.  When I go into Lightroom the Lightroom presets are not showing.  I have spent nearly an hour trying to find an e-mail or phone number for support.  Suggestions greatly appreciated!

In the Presets pane, is the list of presets empty?
Or, is the Presets pane missing?

  • Where can i install Cameraraw presets (.XMP) in PS CC2015/LR5 on a MacBook?

Where can I Install CameraRaw presets (.xmp files) on a MacBook for PS2014CC and/or Lightroom5?

Photoshop and lightroom presets have different extensions, so you would have to convert the camera raw xmp presets to lightroom.
    You want your user library
    camera raw
    Mac(user)/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw/Settings
In finder click on Go then hold down the Option key and then click on Library
    for lightroom

  • VSCO lightroom presets

I bought VSCO lightroom presets and cannot install camera profiles/ I use windows 7. Where do I put it?

This makes sense, thanks for replying.
I'm wondering though why this would be the case, I have not changed the permissions on my system (OSX) since installing Lightroom 4.4, and have been able to import RAW and Jpeg files from a number of cameras without issues untill last week when I tried with the Fuji X100S, and then with the 5DMKII.
I went in to permissions on the folders where I am importing from the SD card, everything looks normal, no restrictions. I have only a single user account on my iMac. So there are no additional settings I know of that I can make to the folders. Speaking of which, the folders are really ordinary, just the default "Pictures" folder on OSX, with a 2013 subfolder and date subfolder as per the usual in Lightroom.
Has anyone had success adjusting permissions to address this error?
I've scanned a bunch of the threads referenced above and am seeing this permissions analysis come up often, but nobody is reporting that they've actually fixed the issue.
    Thanks all.

Yesterday I installed cc and when I open LR5 I need a serial number.
What do I do/how do I get one?
    Please help, Thank you.

Your photos remain in place, the catalog you have been using will remain. After you install Lightroom from the CC, all you have to do is open your existing catalog and continue right where you left off.
