Installing Linksys Router for DSL

HELP!!
Here's what I did first:
Pulled off instructions from Linksys "Setting Up DSL on a Linksys Router Using an Apple/Mac computer".
Second:
Inside the router package is the document "start here" , with a Run CD First. Inserted cd , never prompted - took that out.
Now my confusion: should I start where??? I'm no good at the technical part. I'm trying.
Any suggestions.

cmykGirl, Welcome to the discussion area!
Also, on the CD you will find the Users Guide (a PDF document). Follow the directions for configuring the router via a web browser. The screen shots are from Windows but it works exactly the same from the Mac.
BTW, this is the discussion area for the iMac G4. There is another dedicated discussion area for the iMac G5.

  • Can't connect LINKSYS router to DSL modem

I'm trying to set up a WRT54GS2 Linksys router with a D-Link DSL-2320b modem.  Have a Westell 6100 modem that is going bad, so I bought the D-Link to replace it. Originally had a D-Link router connected with the Westell, but the router overheats often and has to be reset.
I have been able to connect to the internet using the DSL-2320b modem only, but once I add the Linksys router I am not able to connect to the modem. The Linksys router came from a cable modem connection for which it worked fine.  I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that they both use the same IP, 192.168.1.1.  I have tried changing the IP of the modem, but still having issues.
Any help will greatly be appreciated.  I'm still able to use my old setup to connect to the internet now, but the Westell shut down my phone line today and had to be turned off and back on.  I'm hoping to be able to replace this as soon as possible.   Thanks in advance...

Connect the Mode to the router on the Internet port and the computer to the router on the Ethernet port..If the IP address of the Modem is 192.168.1.x then, change the ip address of the linksys router to 192.168.2.1 and power cycle the entire network and check...

  • Installed Linksys Router but IP address shows Netgear Information

Trying to setup security for my Linksys Router that I didn't do when I first installed it, but when I access the Routers IP address page, Netgear information comes up. How is this possible? I had the Linksys rep on line trying to get help, and she got real testy with me when I told her what was happening. Any advice?

Is this cascaded then to another router? How does your connection go? Modem to Linksys router then to computers? Or do you have other devices namely of course a netgear device connected to your network?
Go to start --> run --> cmd and type in ipconfig. What is your default gateway? That should be one that you should attempt to type to access the router configuration page.

  • Linksys Router for Mac

    Hello,
Just wondering if I can get some help please.
I have a G4 (Quicksilver model I believe) and a Toshiba Centrino laptop. I just recently got a cable internet connection at home and would like to set up a router. Do Linksys routers work with Macs? Im looking at a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router With SpeedBooster (WRT54GS-CA). I'm told some do, some do not. As well, what would I need to have the Mac access the router wirelessly? Do I need an airport card? Or can I use those new USB network adapters?
    Thanks in advance.

Linksys should work just fine - Personally, I've never seen a Mac not connect to a Linksys.
Even though it is advertised as wireless, the router you mention also has 4 wired ports
Yes, you will need an airport card for the Mac unless the router is in the same room (if it is, use the wire).
Any wireless card should work in the Toshiba.
USB->ethernet adapter can be problematic. I would avoid them

  • Compatible linksys router for multiple xbox 360

Are there any models of linksys routers that will support multiple xbox 360 online at same time?
Any and all models that would work is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance

I believe all Linksys routers should work with multiple Xbox consoles. But here are my top three routers: WRT1900AC, EA9200, and EA6900.
Also, keep in mind that it is not recommended to play two Xbox 360 units on the same network connected to the same game server since the modem will only generate a single WAN IP address.  However, you may secure another WAN IP address from your ISP to connect the two Xbox 360.

  • Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 Modem and Linksys router

If anyone is having a hard time getting these three to work together to get on-line, I know your pain. I've spent the better part of two days trying to get these devices to talk to each other. After hours spent trying different combinations and little to no help from Verizon and Linksys I have finally gotten my DSL up and running through my Linksys router. I post this in hopes that someone doesn't spin their wheels like I have been doing over the past few days. Here's what I did to get them to work:
    1. Reset both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    2. Unplug the router and the modem
    3. Connect an ethernet cable from your Apple to the Westell modem and power it back on
    4. Type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser of choice. The username should be "admin" (w/o the quotes) and password should be "password" (again no quotes)
    5. It will ask you to update your username and password
    6. Under the CONFIGURATION heading select VC CONFIGURATION and click on EDIT
    7. Make sure that both PROTOCOL and MODE are set to BRIDGE
    8. Click on SET VC and then click OK when asked if you want to reset for new configuration to take affect
    9. Once again power off the modem for about a minute then power it back up
    10. Login again with the login you created above and go to the STATUS/ABOUT column and write down the MAC address
    11. Set it to DHCP OFF and change the Private Lan Modem IP to 192.168.2.1. Write this down and keep it so you can access your modem in the future.
    12. Save the settings. You will lose communication with the Westell at this point. Once again, power down the modem for about a minute.
    13. Connect the ethernet cable from the modem into the Internet port on the Linksys router and then connect your Apple to the first ethernet spot
    14. Turn on both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    15. With your browser (Safari or Firefox) type in 192.168.1.1. Under SETUP go to MAC ADDRESS CLONE and enter the MAC address you wrote down for your Westell modem earlier and then save the settings
    16. Make sure you are in DHCP mode and not PPPoE
    17. Save, exit, and you should be on-line
That was a lot more difficult than it had to be. I certainly didn't get this from the support folks from Linksys or Verizon...a lot of trial and error and investigating on-line. I hope this saves you from the headaches I experienced.

    Feedback for Linksys:
In the Linksys Help system "Easy Answers" there's the question "How can I set up a Linksys router with DSL Internet?" This is what I used to try and solve my Internet connection problem.
The Answer says "Most DSL providers use Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) ..." and goes on to explain how to set up the router for PPPoE. However, my service (AT&T/Yahoo high speed internet) uses DHCP. That meant I spent several frustrating hours trying to get it to work with PPPoE.
The Answer would have been better if it first explained how to tell if you have PPPoE or DHCP (see the reply from vness above, it's an excellent explanation), and then linked to the appropriate setup instructions.
    Thanks for the help!!!!

  • DSL Modem + Linksys Router

    Hello
I have DSL Modem connected with linksys router and linksys router is connected with normal switch all our workstations are directly connected with switch. now let me tell you the configuration also.
    DSL MODEM
    ISP DEDICATED IP : ***.***.**.**
    LOCAL IP : 192.168.1.1
    DHCP ENABLED
    LINKSYSROUTER
    DHCP ENABLED
    LOCAL IP: 192.168.2.1
LINK IP: 192.168.1.5 (Assigned by DSL MODEM DHCP)
    DNS: Assigned by DSL Modem
    WORKSTATION
LOCAL IP: Assigned by Linksys router for e.g 192.168.2.100
Now my problem is that after every one hour we get disconnect from the router when we ping the router 192.168.2.1 from workstation it says "Request timed out" and when we give a power cycle to router its repling by ping command, I am also using WLAN on this router.

    Why so difficult?
    DSL MODEM
    ISP DEDICATED IP : ***.***.**.**
    LOCAL IP : 192.168.1.1
    DHCP ENABLED
set dhcp range from .50 to .200
    LINKSYSROUTER
    DHCP disabled
    LOCAL IP: 192.168.1.2
LINK IP: not used, only use the router side(wan=empty)
    DNS: fixed to 192.168.1.1
    WORKSTATION
LOCAL IP: Assigned by DSL for e.g 192.168.1.50...200
You might need to add a static LAN route on the linksys like
    192.168.1.0 -> 192.168.1.1 (mask 255.255.255.0)

Hi to all, i recently purchased linksys router for my mac mini, i followed the steps on the set-up but the ethernet cannot connect. i ran the diagnostics and it keeps asking me to restart the device repeatedly well in fact i did, i think it means that my computer cannot connect to the router?
I encoded my ISP info already and was ok. on the set up, the left side bar stops at "ethernet not connected" thats why i cant go further to connecting to the internet. Please help. I will try to install again from the start. I need to disconnect as i am directly connecting my DSL modem to my mini.

Anyways, i got it going already now i have another issue to take care: my pc to wireless router.
I want to connect to the internet wirelessly using my pc laptop.
i opened my pc laptop and here what it is saying in the wireless network connection:
my PC can see the router but its not acquiring the address of my pc laptop. it is "validating identity"
Also in the bubble message in taskbar says:
windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network linksys.
This is a different case from windows bonjour right? even though, i already have the windows bonjour in my pc laptop if that is the case.
    thanks for further help.

  • I can't see my own linksys router

I installed a linksys router for a friend, I can connect to it with my iphone, and my laptop. He can not even see it in the list of wifi signals. He can however connect to the neighbors device but not his own. I have been working on this for several weeks now. I can pull up in the driveway and my phone connects ASAP. My laptop connects, yet he can not and he doesn't even see the router listed as a device. But he can connect to his neighbors router, so I no it's not his laptop...

    HELP!

DSL supplied by AT&T (SBC) or Verizon can have a router attached to the modem. It is my understanding that is true of most DSL suppliers.
The purpose of the router is to channel the demands of multiple computers at the customer end in an orderly manner into the DSL service (that allows only one connection at a time at the supplier end) so that the demand on the DSL supplier is the equivalent of a single computer. I believe some DSL suppliers allow more than one connection to their line, but I have not personally verified that.
I believe the suppliers' rules for cable service may be more restrictive than for DSL service, as additional connections degrades cable service, but not DSL service.

  • Best Router with DSL Modem for use with AT&T DSL and Airport Express?

I recently had my old 2WIRE from AT&T DSL service die, so purchased a new 2WIRE 2701HG-B. My old 2WIRE worked with my Airport Express, which is hooked up to my DVR for DirecTV use. The new 2WIRE apparently is not compatible with the Airport Express, so I returned it and purchased a NetGear Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL modem. While this one does work with the Airport Express setup, it runs very slow. This router has mediocre reviews, so I'd like to find a better one.
I'd appreciate any suggestions for a Router w Modem that would work best with my AT&T DSL and Airport Express (802.11n) within the $100 - $150 price range. Thanks!

Configure the Express as a bridge: Connect via "Ethernet", and set Connection Sharing to "off (bridge mode)".
The switches ought not to be a problem, and I don't know why your router froze. The Express is simply another wired client, just like a computer might be.
do I turn off DHCP on the router,
No. Something has to provide routing functions so leave the Linksys alone.

  • I just got a Linksys router (WRT54GS), and when I get to step 8, it keeps asking me for a password?

I recently got a Wireless-G Broadband Router modele WRT54GS. When I get to step 8 on the setup disk, I press "Next", and it starts to check my computer's settings. It then asks for a password, so I enter "admin" like I've been told. It starts to check my computer's settings again, and then asks for the password. It keeps happening. Am I doing something wrong?
I have Windows 7. I'm getting signal, but it's not letting me connect to the internet at all (except for Google, for some reason). Oh, and it's brand new, straight out of the box. Thanks.

Perhaps you need to do the manual way of setting up the router.
For Cable connection, here's the procedure.
For DSL connection, here's the procedure.

  • Best place for DSL wireless router to aquire strongest signal

    Hi all
I have a Westell DSL wireless router sitting on a Kensington surge protection base with antennas pointing straight up. Is this ok? My wireless internet connection is ok for now. What's the best place for my wireless router for the strongest possible signal?
    Thanks for your help
    Web dude

Place it clear of HVAC ducting and away from any microwave or cordless phone base stations(s) in the house - these are the primary causes of wifi interference/noise and signal outages. Consider the area you want to cover (including any outdoor areas) and place the unit as near the center as possible.
Download a copy of AP Grapher and observe the signal quality in your intended reception area(s) to help place the router optimally for best signal and lowest noise, including rotating the antennas if needed - vertical is perfectly OK, but you may get marginally better signal or lower noise by rotating them.
AP Grapher can be downloaded from http://www.chimoosoft.com/products/apgrapher/
