Installing Lion appears to have crashed my iMac

We attempted to install Lion today on an iMac after a successful install on our Mac Book Pro.  The Lion install on the iMac appeared to be working fine until it got down to saying about one minute left and it stayed there for a long time.  After being there for over two hours, we powered down the computer and restarted.  It went back to the install again initially saying 36 minutes left, later said 12 minutes left, and finally ended with a notice saying the install failed and a recovery volume could not be created.  The message said to go to www.apple.com/support/no-recovery.  When attempting to go to that web site, you end up at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649 which has nothing to do with the install problem we have.  After a power cycle, we now have a gray screen with the apple icon and the dashed circle working icon and it stays there forever.  Does anyone have any idea what to do to fix this problem?

OK, well... I did a restart, invoking the 'option' command, and the Lion Recovery partition did not show up, so I went ahead and booted back into SL, wherein I was given a 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer' with a choice of ejecting, ignoring, or initializing.  I chose Ignore, and the drive now just shows up in disk utility as 'media' with no opportunity to interact with it.
I had the presence of mind to make a Lion DVD before I installed, so I booted with that, and it too was unable to interact with the drive.
Given the degraded state of this drive, I have no reason to suspect that entering target disk mode and mounting to my MBP would bear any fruit... looks like this sucker is beyond hope.  Yay...
I will not be re-installing Lion until at least .2 comes out at this point.. I can't afford a wasted day like this again.

Run Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities before trying to upgrade to Lion in case the startup disk needs repairing.

  • My Macbook pro often won't start up since I installed Lion, and I have to shut it down using power button. My desktop icons don't appear and the dock won't open. I only have the little circle of color spinning endlessly. What's wrong now!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I have an iMac 5.1 which is running OSx10.5.8 - it runs very slowly and I can't find if there is a particular problem. In the process, I have tried to install 10.6 [I have a new iMac] and the 5.1 won't accept the install discs.

As you have discovered... you cannot use the install discs from another Mac...

  • How do I fix: DirectoryServices: Job appears to have crashed: Bus error

Can anyone help with this problem? The only solution I have found is to erase and reinstall the OS. A reinstall alone will not fix it.
I have experienced this problem on 3 Macs now, and Apple Care has virtually rebuilt my mini attempting to fix it. However to date, I haven't been able to find anyone at Apple who will look at the data. Here is what appears endlessly in /var/log/system.log:

  • My Dock appears to have crashed and doesn't automatically re-launch...

My Dock appears to have crashed and whereas I would normally expect it to re-launch itself and re-appear, it's not doing anything... It's just not there. Moving my mouse to the bottom of the screen does nothing. Attempting to toggle the "automatically hide and show" option does nothing. It's not showing up in Activity Monitor's processes, and trying to kick it back into life by adjusting the System Prefs > Dock settings doesn't work either. I also can't Ctrl-Tab between apps.
Is there some way I can force-launch it with Terminal or something?
Bear in mind though that I know NOTHING about Terminal, and would need to be given precise instructions on how to do this, or else I'm likely to end up erasing my hard drive or something, I just know it...
Any help would be appreciated, thanks - except for a complete system re-start, that is, as I have a whoooooole bunch of movie files being processed and need to leave this running for the next 12 hours or so, but I would like to have access to my Dock in the meantime...

  • I am running safari 7.0.6 with IOS 10.9.4. after the mac has been asleep and I log on I cannot open safari as it appears to have crashed. the workaround to this is to reboot the IOS and log back in after which safari will open.

I am running safari 7.0.6 with IOS 10.9.4. after the mac has been asleep and I log on I cannot open safari as it appears to have crashed. the workaround to this is to reboot the IOS and log back in after which safari will open. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • I installed Lion and now have 2 system preferences(1 original and 1 alias). How to fix?

I installed Lion and now have 2 system preferences(1 original and 1 alias). I'm trying to clean up Launchpad and I have 2 system preferences and 2 iTunes apps. How can I merge or remove the unecessary files?

No. It's perfectly safe. An alias is just a pointer to the actual file, not the file itself.
BTW, the icons in the Dock are also just aliases, so it's safe to remove those as well, and just keep the ones you use often.

  • Is it possible to install lion on a partition of my iMac, and leave Leopard on the computer too.

I am curently running Leopard and would like to keep it on my iMac due to bits of installed software that I'd like to keep from becoming incompatible, but I'd also like to have OS X Lion on there too so that I can enjoy some of the benefits this has to offer. So my question is, am I able to partition my hard drive and install Lion on a separate partition, so that I can boot Leopard or Lion depending on which I need to use at the time?

    Yes.

  • How can I install Lion (10.7.5) on new iMacs 13,1

I have software and printers that will not work with Mountain Lion. Have partitioned and installed Lion on new partition using an older Mac as a slave and booting the new iMac as target disk. The Lion software installed, but now when booting Lion, partition just hangs with ghostbuster sign. Same with Lions recovery partition.
Why Apple any work arounds? Have not yet tried external drive with Lion installed. Any ideas appreciated.

New models that came with Mountain Lion pre-installed cannot run Lion. There is no known backward compatibility.
I suppose you could try running Lion in emulation using VM software like Parallels or VM Fusion.

  • Although I am new to mac, I am not new to computers and purchasing online.  I can't sign into the App store after installing Lion.  I have had to change my password 4 times in 2 days .  I am so sick of this.  I am trying to buy a tutorial for Lion.

I recently downloaded Lion and since have had nothing but problems with my new i-Mac.  My problem with the App store is only one issue.  Has anyone out there had any trouble with their components after installing Lion 10.7???????   After several hours on the phone with a tech my situation isn't any better.  I think the tech is sick of talking with me.  He was supposed to call me today and the phone never rang.   He told me he was working on something to repair my problems and needed to talk with engineers.  How long could that take????   If it wouldn't hurt the person who gifted me this i-Mac, I would give it back.

I didn't have to.  Office '11 kept on working with no problems after I installed Lion.

  • Flash player won't play videos in safari after I've installed Lion does anyone have a solution?

    Hi,
I've installed Lion after which Flash Player won't play videos with Safari. I keep being prompted to download and install the latest version of Flash Player whcih I've done several times. Can someone please help me fix this.
I find Adobe's announcement that there are no issues with Flash Player and Lion a bit of a sick joke.
    Many thanks,
    Ian Pickering

This sounds like the problems that Adobe have reported which are listed at
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/905/cpsid_90508.html#main_Flash_Player
I only use flash for watching video clips on the BBC website so haven't been affected by these other issues. The text below is copied from the website at the above link. Hope this helps.
The Flash Player Settings dialog box doesn't respond to mouse clicks. As a workaround, press the Tab key to move to the Close button and press the spacebar to close the dialog box. While not all settings are available, you can also use the Flash Player native control panel in System Preferences.
Custom native mouse cursors don't animate properly on Mac OS 10.7.

  • My Macbook Pro won't shut down after installing Lion.  Anyone have a suggestion to fix this?

Just installed Lion, and it won't shutdown!
The only way it'll shut down is if it drains the battery.
    Help!
    J

Lots of other people are complaining about their Macs taking long times to shutdown. Some solved it by reinstalling Lion from scratch (without using a Time Machine backup and simply copying all their files on to the new install).
Others discovered old software that is no longer compatible with Lion (I found Mac The Ripper in mine, plus many others on day 1). I uninstalled some apps using App Cleaner (google it, it's free and it's awesome).
I was having a hard time shutting down my macbook pro, now it's back to normal.
Try finding applications that are not compatible with Lion. Their icons should be greyed out and with a diagonal line crossing it. Make sure you erase these applications and library related files, which is very simple if you use App Cleaner. And make sure you look into sub-folders inside the Applications folder, as I missed a couple because they were not immediately visible.
Hope it helps. If it does, let us know.
