Installing Lion stops Textedit and Preview launching
Having upgraded to Lion I cannot launch Textedit or Preview properly on my Mac Pro.
I wonder does anyone else have the problem.
Indicators:
I am logged in as myself as administrator
Both Textedit and Preview crash consistently on every file, and also if you simply open either application.
OS is production 10.4. All Software Updates to date are installed.
My Macbook Pro is also upgraded. This works OK. So do other Macs on the network.
Guest account on the Mac Pro works OK i.e both programs launch properly.
If I create a new account on the Mac Pro (admin or otherwise) all works OK
So the problem is only on my account on Mac Pro
Other postings point to possible problem with symlinks(?). There don't appear to be any symlinks in my home directory. I have never used Terminal, and do not knowingly poke into system files, permissions etc. I have attempted though to follow advice from these postings but no success.
There is also some comment about Downloads folder. I have deleted all contents from this folder with no success.
I have run Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility with no success.
The error message below indicates a permissions problem in Library/Containers/. I cannot find a folder called Containers. (I have looked into Library pressing the Option key and Go in Finder.)
Below is part of the error message whenlaunching Textedit.

Advice gratefullyreceived.
I created another user on my system, and found I could open both Preview and Text Edit fine in that account. I copied (duplicated) the two Containers folders that were created in the new account, changed permissions on the copies using get info, and moved them over to my original user account. That worked.
However, after making some other changes related to permissions that had me spending 4 hours on the phone with Apple, issues now forwarded to engineering, I started experiencing the same error, crash on opening.
I went to those container folders (com.apple.preview and com.apple.TextEdit) and trashed their contents. After that both applications opened normally, and the missing files were recreated.
Hope this helps.

Textedit and preview crashing in osx lion when changing network location
I did upgrade to lion on launch and noticed that textedit and preview work quite well except when changing network location: after a few seconds of spinning ball, both crash.
Tried repairing permissions, deleting "containers" folders in my library and so on, without luck.
Anyone is experiencing the same problem?

*** multi-threaded process forked ***UPDATE 2: I'm having this issue both on my iMac and my Macbook, so I suppose it's a lion bug and not simply something related to something that went wrong during the update (permissions or something like this). It's both in 10.7 and 10.7.1.
I'm going to try on my wife's Macbook to see if it's something related to some software or setting I'm using; in the meanwhile, can someone out there try to reproduce this issue? Just open textedit and change the network location from the menu bar (you should create one other than "automatic" for "locations" to show up just below "dock"): at this point you should get the spinning ball and then a window telling you that textedit just crashed. Try to do a couple of times if it doesn't crash the first one.
BTW I noticed that textedit doesn't crash if you have the network preference pane open and active ("system preferences" showed on the menu bar) and change the location from the menu bar.
I think I'm going to give a call to Applecare to see if there's some plan to get this corrected in some next update. -
Textedit and Preview will no longer open after the 10.7.5 update.
I haven't been able to open either Textedit or Preview since I updated my mac to 10.7.5. I've tried all sorts of things--repairing permissions, dabbling with symlinks, deleting the container subfolders for Textedit and Preview but so far nothing has worked. This is Textedit's crash report:

I'm really desperate right now, so any and all help is appreciated! I use both these applications on a frequent basis, especially Textedit, so I'd really like to get this fixed as soon as possible. You can try running the combo updater over your install but you might need to re-install Lion. Both options should not erase your data but if you do the re-install of Lion it's recommended that you backup first as a precaution.
OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo) 1.91 GB

To re-install, boot into the Recovery drive and select to Reinstall OS X.
Hold down Command R when restarting to enter Recovery drive. -
Since installing lion my iMac and powebook can't find my printer
since installing lion my iMac and macbook pro can't find my printer (it is on the supported devices list and I downloaded the latest drivers).
I called canon and they stepped me through reseting my print system and reinstalling the print drivers and libraries but I have tried direct USB and via airport and the computers dont recognise the printer anymore. Just to be sure it was not the printer I tried to print from my iphone and that works...
I have changed the usb cable, changed usb ports and nothing can get the computers to recognise the device. Please help all advice welcome!:-) here's an interesting link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#canon
Note: If you've haven't used Software Update recently on your Mac, please run it before connecting a printer or scanner to update your Mac's database on what software is available.
I would also do this after you plug in your printer. Apple might have updates for your printer.
there is Canon Software for lion. try uninstalling everything and starting from 0.
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/office_al l_in_one_inkjet_printers/pixma_mx860#DriversAndSoftware
I also read that if your printer shows up in your printer list before the appropriate drivers are installed, it might mess things up, if you plug in your printer and see it after cleaning everything you had done previously off, then try removing it from the printer list (don't just unplug it, delete the profile). And then install the appropriate drivers. -
I installed Lion OS X and Logic Pro won't run. I downloaded the 9.1.5 update: "An Eligible Logic Pro Version Was Not Found in the Applications Folder. This Update require Logic Pro Version 9.0 or higher". I have Logic Pro Version 9.1.1 installed.
I even pulled the dmg file into the Logic Studio folder in my applications directory and it still does not recognize it. What do I do now?Niel: Thanks.
For others benefit, here is what happened.
I had installed Logic Studio 9.1 some time ago.......not knowing what all the programs were nor what they did, I created a "Logic Studio" subfolder in my applications folder and put all Logic Studio programs into it so I'd know where they were and could review each at my leisure over time.
My assumption now is that when the updater looks for the Logic Pro program, it looks only in the applications folder. It seems lame that it would not also look in the subfolders of the applications folder, but that apparently IS the way it works. Because my Logic Pro program was located in the "Logic Studio" subfolder, the updater just didn't see it..hence the error message I received when I tried to update.
Solution: I moved all the Logic Studio programs out of the subfolder and now they reside in the applications folder. Ran the 9.1.5 updater and it worked like a charm. -
Tried to install lion on Macbookpro and getting a smart error message?
Tried to install lion on Macbookpro and getting a S.M.A.R.T error message, software up to date and enough free memory
Do you have the 10.6.8 (or whatever came with the machine) install DVDs?
If so you need to boot up with those and run Dusk Utility off the DVD. Check the S.M.A.R.T status at the bottom of the Disk Utility window when you have the MBP's disk selected. If the status doesn't say Verified the disk is on its way out its already dead. It needs to be replaced.
If it says Verified then do a Disk Repair on the MBP's disk. Note any errors you get and rerun Disk Repair until you get no more errors. If that doesn't happen the disk needs to be replaced.
All this cos I bought an iPad and wanted to use iCloud!
The install hasn't caused this. The disk was going no matter what. Its a good thing that you did the install and caught the error or else you might have lost your whole system.

My old IMAC is a few years old. Just bought a new one OS X 10.8.2. The old one is OS X 10.5.8. Can I install Lion or equivalent and then synch both on ICLOUD. Or is there another way to synch the two computers.
You can use Migration Assistant in Applications > Utilities to get all your files from one iMac to the other. If you want to upgrade your older model to MtLion you need to have at least a mid 2007 Intel Core 2 Duo with a bare minimum of 2GB of RAM. Then you need to buy the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD , update with
Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
at which point you can access the App Store to purchase and install MtLion 10.8 where you would then have access to the iCloud. -

Can't install Lion (Windows XP and Parallells 6 being used)
Hi,
This is my first post here, so please forgive me if I'm not too used to the forum habits. I've been checking the discussions before, but haven't been able to find anything that matched my case...
Let me explain it to you, so that hopefully somebody knows the solution and can share it with me...
I had Mac OS X (10.6) installed in my MacBookPro.
I had also installed Windows XP with Bootcamp in a different partition.
I had also installed Paralllels Desktop 6.
Everything worked fine.
Yesterday I decided to upgrade to Lion, and bought it in the Apple Store.
Before going ahead with the process, and as indicated by Apple, I upgraded the current Mac OS to the latest version.
I tried to install it, and after rebooting, when it was about 30 minutes to finish the installation, I got amessage saying that "MAc OS X can't be installed in the Macintosh HD hard drive, because a recovery disk can not be created" (translated from the Spanish message)
Then, I though that maybe it was some issue with Parallels Desktop. I checked their Fourms, and indeed it seemed that it could be the reason. I upgraded to the last available version.
I tried again, and got the same message.
Then I thought that maybe I had to upgrade to the last version also with Parallels in the Windows machine. I did so, and I tried again... and again it didn't work.
I don't know what else I can do... besides deleting the Windows partition, installing Lion, and creating a new partition, in which I should install Windows 7 (as Windows XP, as it is explained, is not supported in a new partition)
I followed all the natural steps to create the partition for Windows, install Parallels, etc. I mean that I didn't do anything manually then...
The only "weird" thing that I had to do when installing Windows XP was this one:
The Windows XP that I had was Service Pack 1, and Service Pack 2 was included in another CD... Of course that's not a problem when installing Windows in a PC, but gave me a lot of troubles to install it in the Mac. I found this solution in a Forum in Internet, follow the steps, and it worked:
(http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/running-windows-anything-else-your-mac/38166-wi ndows-xp-service-pack-2-installation-problem.html)
1. Click Start - Run - Type “regedit” and press enter 2. Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\Software
\Microsoft
\Windows
\CurrentVersion
\Setup 3. In the right pane, Right-click and select New - String value 4. Name it as “BootDir” and set its value to “C”
Can this be the reason why I'm not able to install Lion now?
Anyway, and whether it is, any solution (simple, if possible, please! ;-> ) to install it?
(Buying Windows 7, deleting the partition, etc. seems very nightmarish to me)
Thanks a lot in advance!
submariner321I actually confess not reading but did you read this:
KB Parallels: Virtual machine stops working after upgrading to Mac OS X Lion -
I installed Lion this week and my life is over ..
when I try to use PowerPoint in Lion for inserting a file into the presentation it now crashes. how do i fix this?
when I try to charge my iPhone in Lion it does not charge and its not the cable, it works for itunes. how do I fix this?
and I NOTE THAT I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF A JOB HUNT AND LION IS A BIG PROBLEM HERE as the iphone is needed. the cable that came with the iphone that I purchased all together in box, was shredded in about 3 months of normal use, first, the tiny white rubber piece at the end of the wire (almost immediately), split in middle, then the whole wire covering started to slide out from the little split part, and next the wires started to slide out, and one came loose - all very dangerous, I could have been electrocuted by the bare wires ..... since I needed a new charger cable immediately to use the iphone, and purchased a new USB charger locally, so I wouldn't get electrocuted I did not even bother to contact APPLE to complain or ask for a new one and handled it myself and used my new cable for about 3 years until today when it is suddenly incompatible, not supported even though it is in perfect condition.
(in addition the original headphones had the same problem, and those were replaced under the warranty still in effect at the time).
My son who is also on my iphone plan, is mad about other iPhone compatibility issues I wont get into here, tells me to get us ANDROIDs and stop using Apple. He says this is intentional as they dont want me to use non-APPLE products and that, that is why my charger cable stopped working after i installed Lion ...... IS THIS TRUE?
ALSO - When I try to use PhotoShop nnow it does not even open. how do i fix this?
As I am stuck with my MAC, I have no way to get a new computer, software, or new phone package - not rich
AND
I am SO MAD THAT I INSTALLED AND PURCHASED LION, can any of this be fixed????
Thanks
Message was edited by: PersononlineWith regard to PowerPoint, what version of MS Office do you have? Is it crashing, or refusing to open? If the latter, and you're seeing a message about not being able to open PowerPC software, you need to upgrade MS Office. The same applies to Photoshop.
Sounds like there's something wrong with your system. What that might be, I don't know, but you can try some of the suggestions in Understanding upgrade nightmares. (Note that my pages contain links to other pages that promote my services, and this should not be taken as an endorsement of my services by Apple.)
Your son's comments are - no offense - nonsense. MS Office works just fine with Lion, as long as you have a version newer than 2004. Recent enough versions of Photoshop should also work just fine. Apple does not have a problem with you using non-Apple software or hardware. If they did, they would quickly go out of business.
If you cannot afford to upgrade your software, you'll need to downgrade to Snow Leopard. See here for instructions:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3525616
Note that in the future you should check compatibility of all your hardware and software with any new system before upgrading, and you should never upgrade at a time when having your computer accessible is critical. Things can always go wrong when upgrading to any new system. -
After installing Lion, mouse up and down scrolling does not work
After installing Lion, scrolling with an Apple mouse up and down does not work. Horizontal scrolling does work.
Hi guys. First, check the scroll outside of Firefox. Is it working?
Second,
'''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Start Firefox in Safe Mode]''' {web link}
While you are in safe mode;
Type '''about:preferences'''<Enter> in the address bar
Select '''Advanced > General.'''
Look for and turn off '''Use Hardware Acceleration'''.
Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?
Then restart. -
Installed Lion but failed and did not boot
downloaded install lion, ran the install, restarted but all I got was the Apple Logo and the turning circle. Had the snow leopard updated prior.
Restart again, but this time hold down the SHIFT key and don't let go until you see a progress-bar.

Hi community,
I installedthe new lion OS x on my computer yesterday and everything is fine. Everything? Almost: Lotus Notes is behaving silly. After firing up the program it freezes in operation and does not take any command any more. I cannot even shut the app down. After restarting the Mac the failure continues. My first thought was to just kill the app, remove the software and reinstall on the new lion...
But: How do I do that (Mac user since a week) as I am a bit lost in the ne menues...
I would be grateful if you would come back to me on this.
Cheers,
JohannesI was having the same issue.
I added the POSIX_SEMAPHORES=1 to the Notes Preference file to resolve.
IMPORTANT NFO:
Sometimes the latest TextEdit in Lion may automatically rename Notes Preferences, to Notes Preferences.txt.
So, before updating your Notes Preferences, it's recommended that you make a backup and then edit the file. You can use the 'mv' command in Terminal to rename the file and remove the .txt extension if you run into this issue by using the following command:
mv Notes\\ Preferences.txt Notes\\ Preferences
OK, moving on, here's what to do:
Update to or use:
Mac OX 10.7.3
Lotus Notes 8.5.3
Right click on the Notes Application in the application folder.
Use Show Package content option from menu.
Go to the path: Notes/Contents/Resources and edit Notes Preference and add this text to the end of the string:
POSIX_SEMAPHORES=1
Afterwards the Notes Preference file should reflect these values:
[Notes]
Directory=$
SharedDataDirectory=/Applications/Notes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Dat a
InstallMode=1
InstallType=6
POSIX_SEMAPHORES=1
Notes should work after a reboot.
Hope this helped someone. -
Mountain Lion stopped downloading and is no longer visible
Because of a failure in the internet connection, the Mountain Lion download went to "waiting..." before it disappeared completely. I don't see it downloading anymore, I don't see it at all on the Launchpad. I already used my Redeem Code from Apple and although I keep checking for "unfinished downloads", nothing comes out. Is there still a chance for me to get the free OS X?
Tried resetting SMC ?

Apps bounce, stop bouncing and never launch 10.6.7
A short time after start up applications which previously started up will not work.
Dock icons just bounce when clicked and never open the application.
Restrat fixes everythingThis has been a recurring problem with Mac OS X. Scanning google you can see is happening at least as far back as 2006. Unfortunately there has never been a solution, just a bunch of workarounds suggested (friendly attempts but duct tape none the less) and the eventual Windows approach of starting over and reinstalling the OS and or impacted.
In Lion several of my apps are exhibiting the same symptoms, including Safari. Permissions have been fixed and refixed until they report the same issue without change (another system bug). System was booted into SafeMode which does a fix disk operation in the pre-boot stages. The root account was activated and apps bounce when logged in as root as well. Tools that fix the app pre-binding are all SNAFU with the infinity-bounce issue.
The rub is that I don't have time to make debugging Mac OS X problems my mission. It is suppose to be commercial software, not hobbyware. I don't mind spending a little extra for quality but if a car spends too much time in the shop, I get rid of it... Time is Short and The Water Rises.
