Installing LION VIA STICK

is there a trick to being able to restore using the bought LION OS 7 STICK?

If your connection is that slow, I would suggest that you stop in at your nearest Apple store and ask them to download it for you using their fast connection. Bring your Mac or possibly a flash drive and have them download the installer (I believe that would work, but have not tried it myself). If on a flash drive, simply copy the installer into your applications folder on the Mac and run it from there.
The flash drive method may not work if you are trying to download/install for the first time since you need your Apple ID to make everything work; in that case, you will need to take your Mac in and have it downloaded to that machine directly using your own Apple ID.

  • How can I re-install lion via usb drive on my new mba(mid-2011)?

how can I re-install lion via usb drive on my new mba(mid-2011)?
I just removed all data from main hd, and my network is not good enough to be able to download the os via recovery hd re-installing way.
in other words, is there a bootable [mac os x lion dmg] for my mba that I can download?

If you are looking for a download link for OS X Lion, I do not know of one. However if you really need the operating system you can buy a USB drive with OS X Lion on it, ready to boot. I think they're $69 at Apple's store. What I would do is contact AppleCare via the Express Lane or just call them and tell them your situation and then they will definantly have an answer for you to point you in the right direction.
    Good luck!

  • Can't install lion via USB

    Hello guys.
I bought a Mac mini and it works fine. And then I installed a windows 7 os via bootcamp.
But I accidentally erased all the data  on the hard driver.Even the "Recovery HD" disapeared.
And then I use remote recovery tool to refomatting the hard driver and try to intall Mac OS Lion via usb. And it fails and give me a sign of stop.
BTW the usb driver was purchased from apple store.
    What should I do?

The USB installer may be a version earlier than what
is currently on your Mini, so it won't install.
Since it is a new Mini, you should be able to do
an internet recovery.  Read the following to make sure
your setup meets all the requirements to do this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
If this is not possible, you may need to take a trip
to the nearest Apple Store to get them to restore it.
Once you do get things back up and running, immediately
    download the Recovery Assistant (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433)
and create yourself a USB stick Recovery HD.

    Hi,
I've erased my hard disk via Disk utility via Internet Recovery mode and tried to install back Lion. However, it's not going through the installation process. Below is the log of the installation process.

You may be having a problem using WIFI to connect to internet recovery. Try using an ethernet connection. If you wiped the entire hard drive you need a GUID partition to install on. You also are supposed  to have a recovery partition on the internal drive to start recovery off from. When going to internet recovery you will be asked for your apple ID to confirm your download.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201314

  • Installing Lion with an AppleID

Hi. With installing Lion via the Mac App Store, once you download it with your AppleID, will that ID be present in the OS and every update want that same ID?
Sounds like a dumb question, but will the AppleID that was used to purchase it be following the OS around forever?

I think that updates will come via System Update like they did before.

I am running 10.5.8 on my 2.GHz iMac. Can I install Lion immediately or have I got to go through some hurdles?

No. You need to purchase Snow Leopard (10.6) first and then install Lion via the Mac App Store.
    See link for SL requirements
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
Here are the requirements for Lion
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space

Since I have installed Lion onto my iMac it's impossible to to copy any video file from the mac to an external support (ups-stick, Timecapsule). What's happened? What can I do?

If you just did upgrade Lion, give it some time. I recall having similar problems and some articles mention heavy background work after install - such as re-indexing for Spotlight etc. I couldn't even copy from folder to folder or e.g. iphoto to folder on the same disk. Went away after a day or two though.
I do however still have a problem with AFP access to one of the lion machines - kills it's network adaptors rather quickly. No luck solving this so far :|

I have the apple usb stick to install lion but when I put it into the usb port it does not appear in finder?  How do I get access to it to install?

Try one of your other USB ports. Be sure to insert it with the plated fingers pointing upwards.

  • Trying to Install Lion from a USB stick.

I purchase Lion from the App store & set up Lion on my Macbook, on a partition on my Exterior Hard Drive.  Also wanted to install Lion on my early 2009 Macmini.  I want to install it, on a partition on the Macmini.  A clean install of 10.6.8. is on that partition.
Instead of downloading it again, I put the "InstallESD.dmg" on a 16 gig USB stick.  I boot into the Mac OSX USB Stick Install, then near the end of the installation, a error message said ''Cant Download the Additional Components Needed to Install Mac OSX''
Has any one got any answers to the problem?

Are you connected to the Internet throughout the process?

  • IPad not appearing via wifi in iTunes since re-install Lion

Ever since I re-installed Lion on my macbook, my Ipad doesn't wirelessly appear in iTunes (it did before) any more. It only works when I link it with the cable. My iPad doesn't recognize it anymore because of my macbook's new 'user name', I presume. How can I reset the connection?

    Hi,
Thanks. I already knew that document and checked all the steps (except the router, but that can't be the problem since it worked before with the same router settings). I checked them again, but nothing changed.
The sync-box is checked in iTunes, both my iPad and MacBook are on the same network (I only have one network), on both my MacBook and my router I switched off the firewall completely, my iPad is recharging on the lightnet, I restarted both iTunes and my iPad numerous times... Tried it all.

  • Pre installed lion repair without Internet connection

    Hello
I am having a nightmare, Purchased a brand spanking new 27inch with Lion pre - installed three weeks ago,I like to reinstall to get rid of Garageband and such that I dont need or use, to do this you need to use Recovery HD and then it will reinstall without those mentioned and it will allow you to download them via appstore if and when you want to put them on, fine, however if you have intermitant broadband issues like I and many others have or no broadband at all you are screwed!!!  if something bad happens and you need to reinstall and have no internet connection how the **** are you supposed to repair, I spoke with a chap from applecare who understood my predicament, who expalined the following if such a case arises:
    1. Take it to a friend who as a internet connection so it can download the lion to be repaired or reinstalled .
    2. Take it to a apple re seller to so it can download the lion to be repaired or reinstalled .
    3. To burn a copy to a USB to run lion from???
    4. Check the internet for alternative methods to create a thumb drive.
    Great stuff hey : )...
I explained to him that the Mac had cost me around £1500 so at least I should have the option of downloading a copy from the app store so I could burn to usb, I was told I should be able to do this but then got back to a day later to explain that because it was pre installed I dont have it on my app store account and I only have the Hidden Recovery Partion that needs the internet.
I dont know about you guys but I like to have my own copy to repair and install if any scenario arises, let's say I live in the country and have no internet connection and my mac suddenly stops working, what I would do on my old mac is to boot to dvd and repair or reinstall, not a option here I am afraid, because if you dont have a internet connection you cannot repair. I was told I can either buy a copy from the app store and then burn to USB or order the Lion on a USB thumb drive thus costing more money, it's the principal of paying for Lion when they should allow you to download it free from your account as you have paid for the system in the cost of the Imac.
Below are the ways of making a thumb drive that involves purchasing Lion to begin with:
Option 1: Put a full bootable Lion installation on the USB Drive with a recovery partition.
What you need: an 8G thumb drive and OS X Lion from the App Store.
What you get: A USB stick you can boot off and repair your Lion installation from.
Download the Lion installer from Apple App Store. DO NOT INSTALL IT ONTO YOUR COMPUTER OR THE INSTALLER WILL DELETE ITSELF. MAKE A COPY OF THE INSTALLER.  If you have already installed it and it has deleted itself,  go back into the App store and click on ‘purchases’ and next to Lion it will say ‘Installed’. Now option-click on ‘purchases’ and ‘installed’ will change to ‘install’ so that you can re-download the installer.
Format your Thumbdrive using a GUID Partition Table, and ‘ Mac OS Extended (Journaled)’, then you can run the Lion installer and install Lion onto the thumb drive.
    More info here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Option 2: Create a Lion Recovery Disk.
You’ll only need a 4G USB Drive for this option.
What you get: A USB stick you can repair your Lion installation from, but not run Lion from.
If your Macintosh has an existing Lion Recovery partition (this will be the case if Lion came pre-installed on your machine when you purchased your computer from Apple), you can use this method. It will not be a full installer but it will use the internet to install Lion onto another computer. It involves downloading a program from apple called ‘Lion Recovery Disk Assistant’

To test if you have a Lion recovery partition, Just hold down Command-R during startup and Lion will give you the option of going into recovery mode if the recovery partition is there.
Option 3: Make a Lion Installation USB Thumb drive like the one you buy from Apple.
What you get: A USB stick you can install Lion from – like the one that comes from Apple.
You’ll need an 8G USB thumbdrive.
    1. Purchase and download the Lion Installer via the App store as in Option 1 above.
    2. Right-click on the installer and select “Show Package Contents” and find  the file called  ”InstallESD.dmg” in the SharedSupport folder.
    3. Use Disk Utility to ‘Restore’ this dmg file to a thumb drive to make a Lion Installation USB drive like you buy from the Apple Store. (the thumb drive must first be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID Partition Table.)
What are your opinions on this, please don't have a go, I am pointing out a flaw and a bloody great at that in my opinion.
    Cheers
    J

By the way I am not having a go at Apple just pointing out a scenario I am going through at the moment and if anyone else is having the same issue, and I am aware that you dont need to reinstal Lion to trash Garageband, I would like to know your thoughts and alternatives apart from the ones mentioned above.
    Cheers Peeps

  • Older MacPro (1,1 2006) concerned about installing Lion

I've read many many reviews of Lion, some positive but the the majority are negative reviews around stability and compatibility.  I appears that if you have a newer (2009 or later) Mac and haven't installed much on it and don't have a lot of additional hardware inside or attached, it seems that Lion works well.
My concern is that I have a lot of hardware inside and attached and run some key applications that NEED to continue to work trouble free.  List of what I have:
    Hardware:
    2006 MacPro 1,1 - 2X2 Cores 3Ghz (two dual core Xeon CPUs)
    8GB RAM
    2 X 2TB (4TB) internal RAID
1 X 256GB SSD (Windows Vista Bootcamp drive)
1 X 750GB internal HD (Primary OSX Snow Leopard)
MOTU Ultralite (external Firewire with latest Motu drivers for SL and Lion)
    Mackie Control (USB)
    M-Audio USB keyboard
    Time Machine drive (USB 1.5TB)
LG Blu-Ray drive read/writer connect via eSATA
Matrox Compress HD internal PCI card (latest drivers)
Black Magic Designs Intensity card (internal PCI) latest drivers
    30" Apple LCD
    24" Dell LCD
    ATI 5770 Graphics card
    Software:
    Logic Pro 9
    Final Cut Pro 7
    Cinema 4D R12
    Photoshop CS5 Extended
    Dreamweaver CS5
    VM Ware Fusion 3.x (loads Windows 7) - there is a Version 4.0 I don't have yet
    iWeb
    iPhoto
-- this is the key software that needs to continue to work if I install Lion
So the question is Go or No?
If Go, download from Apple Store or buy it on USB Stick?
    Thanks, Rob.

From 10.3.0 to now, I consider every new release version with the zot zero and even dot ones, to be nothing more than final candidate or release candidate quality and rushed or pre-mature.
With dot two now, and required of all things for iOS 5 (which also requires 10.5.0 which has its own set of issues)
The lack of PowerPC meant that the code could be optimized and cleaned, and reduced the footprint to some extent.
Lion Recovery, net install and also net hardware test, also is nice but very much 'tethered' to the mothership.
5345s are popular sub $500 way to get 8-core 2.66 out of those 1,1s too, and there is an unofficial firmware update 2,1 for those interested.
Intel: their public roadmap and announcements and what isn't yet but will become available, and interdependent: PCI Express 3.0 with more bandwidth and support for SATA 6G for one thing and to tab Thunderbolt for PCs (helping drive down costs). We need SATA3 2GB to replace the 6 yr old SATA chips (the MacPro 1,1 firmware etc were born a year before it saw the light of day, 2005 while the Late 2005 G5 was itself being sent thru assembly and manufacturing).
LGA2011 Ivy Bridge - a must would bring 6 and 8-core processors with higher performance has been requiring longer and more work and testing by Intel to get yields and performance. Plus beginning work on DDR4 has started. DDR3 took memory bandwidth from 8GB to 24-32GB/sec depending on motherboard configuration and BIOS, so I would guess DDR4 will take it up another notch as well - by 2014.
    All in due time, if iPad 5 w/ A20 and quad-core @ 2.2GHz doesn't crush it! :-)

  • Installing Lion from external media

    Hi all,
my situation is as follows: I have 2 Macs, both of which I'm the owner of. No, one of them (Mac Pro) has fast internet access, and is already running Lion. The other machine (Mac Book Air), however, is only connected to the web via a rather slow wireless network, and is still running 10.6. Now, my problem is that I'd also like to install Lion on the Air, however the connection is way too slow to download the new OS. Now, I was hoping I could just download Lion on the Mac Pro, then copy a kind of installer image onto a USB stick, pretty much like you could do with an OS X 10.6 installation DVD. However, this doesn't seem to be possible. So, is there any way I can copy an installer image to a USB drive, or is there any other way in which I can install a clean Lion on the Mac Book Air without having to download it through the slow connection?
Thanks a lot for any help!
    Robin

If you make a Lion install USB once you downloaded Lion, you can start from a clean hard disk.
By "clean hard disk" do you mean, erase my internal drive and try use that?
Can I use an external hard drive instead of a USB key to create the "Lion install USB"?

  • How do I install Lion on an MBP with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Boot Camp'd XP and a Master Boot Record?

I think this is called "a pickle."
The machine is a 13" MacBook Pro, 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo w/ 4 GB RAM and a 500 GB HDD.
The HDD has a Snow Leopard 10.6.8 partition, and a Windows XP partition, via Boot Camp.  Its Partition Map Scheme, sadly, is a Master Boot Record. I need to reformat it to a GUID Partition Table scheme to install Lion, but when I attempt to boot it from the Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD to wipe the drive, it grey-screens.  Dead end.
From what I can gather on the forums, I can't boot a 10.6.8 machine using a Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD.  I can't find my grey DVDs for this machine – still looking for those – but I expect those won't work either, being Leopard-generation?
The machine works fine, for the most part, including the optical drive.  Has occassional display and wake glitches.  Its HDD is backed up on a Drobo via Time Machine.  I also have a 15" MBP Core i7 (with the exact same problem: 10.6.8, XP, MBR) which I can use for Target Disk Mode via FireWire.  If I try to wipe the HDD on the 13", using Disk Utility on the 15" via Target Disk Mode, will the 13" then boot successfully from the Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD?
I just want to wipe the 13" machine, reinstall a fresh copy of Snow Leopard, then update it to Lion and restore from Time Machine, and never touch anything Windows-related ever again. (And then do the same for my 15", for which I've found my 10.6.3 grey disc. Not sure if that's any more promising.)
    Any help appreciated!

Sounds like something is wrong with your disk. Have you tried cleaning it?
The Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD is fine – it mounts on both my 13" and 15", and I successfully created an image of it on my 15".  I also tried my wife's Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD, also clean, which produced the same grey screen result.
Have you tried to use boot camp to erase the Windows partition?
Yep, this is supposed to be the proper way to remove a Windows XP partition from Boot Camp, so this was the first thing I tried.  I get the same error as everyone with a Master Boot Record scheme appears to get:
The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) volume.  Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
So, if I can't launch the Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard DVD, my next best guess is wiping it from my 15" over Target Disk Mode.  However, if I try that, and still can't get it to boot from the Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD, then I'm stuck with an MBP without an OS.
My conclusion – that 10.6.0 DVDs can't boot to 10.6.8 machines – was based on forum posts about downgrading from Lion.  I was wondering if there's a way to create a "10.6.8 restore DVD," and try booting from that.  Shot in the dark perhaps.

  • I just installed lion on my macbook pro it doesn't let me log into my username. so what im going to do is to restore it and reinstall lion any help on how to do it correctly tho??

so i installed lion on my friends macbook pro and it didn't let me log into his personal username like after you turn it on it just hilghts his name and the bar to type in his password doesn't show you. so what i was thing is to back up his personal hard drive and restoring it and try to reinstall lion.. from a momory stick that i have put lion on as my personal copy. any way on doing it better or how to restore the mac and be able to reinstall lion plz help.

    Chuck
Without knowing what exactly has gone wrong it is difficult to be precise, but it sounds a bit like you are attempting to install YOUR copy of Lion on your friend's machine?
I'm not sure the licence allows you to do that.
IF you are attempting to install a legitimate copy of Lion on his machine, then I would suggest you try again. That sometimes works.
Do you / he have a backup?
Have you tried starting from the recovery disk and repairing the hard drive etc.?
