Installing LR5.3 beta

If I download and install LR5.3 beta will it overwrite LR5.2 installation. I want to handle Sony A7 rawfiles.  If it overwrites 5.2. will there be problems later when uppgrading to final version.    I understood that by using dngconverter 8.3. beta I could change rawfiles to dngfiles. But when I try that dngconverter does not find any rawfiles. Now I noticed that when I Drag a  RAW file onto the app itself to launch the Adobe DNG Converter dialog bog. That way works but why can I not find rawfiles by navigating to card or computer ?.  I could use dngconverter and go on with LR5.2 until 5.3 uppgrade is final.

Q.If I download and install LR5.3 beta will it overwrite LR5.2  installation.
a. Yes. The instructions that come with the install package will provide clear instructions to complete the process.
Q.I want to handle Sony A7 rawfiles.
a. Ok its supported in the RC.
Q. If it overwrites 5.2.will there be problems later when uppgrading to final version.
a. There have been no problems in the past. The final release will overwrite the RC.
Q. I  understood that by using dngconverter 8.3. beta I could change rawfiles  to dngfiles.
a. Yes this is true. You will need to do some net searching to understand the Pro's and Con's of using the DNG route.
Q. But when I try that dngconverter does not find any  rawfiles.
a. The DNG converter is a stand alone product which will do a conversion of raw files it supports. It performes little else. Open the DNG converter after installing it on your computer then select a folder on your hard drive containing the raw files you wish to convert and it will prompt for the options that you wish to use.
Q.Now I noticed that when I Drag a  RAW file onto the app itself  to launch the Adobe DNG Converter dialog bog.
a. I do not use the DNG converter reqularty so i am not able to provide advice on that issue.
Q. That way works but why  can I not find rawfiles by navigating to card or computer ?.
a. I do not believe the DNR converter is designed to provide those functions.
Q. I could  use dng converter and go on with LR5.2 until 5.3 uppgrade is final.
a. Yes. I would avoid that hassle and install the LR 5.3 RC package, it is not a Beta it is a Release Candidate and provides numerous bug fixes which have plaged the earlier versions of LR 5.x

  • Having a problem with LR5 install and beta version

I uninstalled LR5 beta first, then purchased and installed LR5  on windows 7. Now when I open LR5 I only get the images I download on the beta version and not my LR4 catalogs etc. How do I get LR4 to merge into LR5 new install?

Jan, it sounds like most of your work is in your LR4 catalog?  In that case, I would start Lightroom 5, go to File > Open Catalog and point to your Lightroom 4 catalog (like dj_paige said).  Lightroom 5 will update your LR4 catalog.  Depending on how many images are in your catalog, this could take some time.
Once your Lightroom 4 catalog is completely upgraded, decide if you want to merge your beta catalog into the upgraded catalog or not.  If you do, you can do File > Import from Another Catalog and point to your Beta catalog.  This will merge it into your newly-updated Lightroom 4 catalog.

  • Why can't I install LR5 on Vista 64?

I have LR5 beta running fine on my Vista64 set up (6 core processor, 16gb ram, HD7770oc 1GB graphics card), but the latest trial states "Needs Win7 or above to work."
Given that the core of win7 is the same as Vista, and pretty much every program written for Win 7 runs on Vista, why the new restriction? It's not as if Vista has been made "unsupported" by Microsoft, and the fact that the beta still runs on Vista64 shows that the production version should also run fine, if the stupid install restriction was removed.
Is there a work-around for this? Or will you release an update to allow Vista 64 users to use LR5?

Also, DdeGannes, You are grossly underestimating the cost of an upgrade. It doesn't cost $20 to upgrade your mac, or a little bit more to upgrade a pc. It cost hours and hours of reinstalling your favorite software, settings things up, getting existing (legacy) stuff to work, not to mention hardware. Additionaly, in companies, it costs dozens of man-hours of testing, approval through several layers of management, all kinds of important figures who want to have a say in it, et flipping cetera. An upgrade is VERY costly when you're not just a person by yourself.
On top of that, Vista is a fine OS. It has its quirks here and there, but most of it was fixed in the latest SP. Same goes for Snow Leopard - that too I imagine is a perfectly fine working OS. Why upgrade something that works fine? The only thing that can happen is something breaking if everything works.
XP is a different story. XP and Vista are radically different in many ways. For an application that uses the GPU to render, I'm not totally surpized that supporting XP was too much effort, not to mention its extended support is going to end next year, iirc. No surpizes there, XP is 11 years old. But Vista is "only" 6 years old, while its latest SP is only 4 years old. Not awfully old, iyam.
Add another factor: most users who are not computer geeks (and let's face it, not all photographers are computer geeks) dare to reinstall their OS. Soooo many people believe (rightfully, in a way) that the OS is inseperable part of the pc. This is true for mobile devices, so why not for pc's? In fact, the OS came with it, installed and ready-to-go. Most people don't even think of reinstalling an OS. And before you go "upgrade it then"... No. Upgrading an OS is not-done as any nephew or brother-in-law will tell you. A clean install is the way to go, for reasons that have been obvious for a billion years now, and a clean install is not done by most run-of-the-mill users.
So, some people are "stuck" with Vista, or Snow Leopard, or in fact with Windows XP. Oh yeah.
My guess is that Adobe drops support for semi-old OS'es because they simply don't want to put any resources into testing on them, nor giving official support on them. It's just naive, imo, because "it's not supported" should not be identical to "it doesn't work". And the forum shows I'm right about at least that part. Th least thing Adobe could do is give a big fat warning, just let it install, and let the user see what'll happen. If it works, yay! If it doesn't, it's not supported. But we will never know if Adobe goes about this, just like Microsoft does. At least Microsoft has an incentive (they want you to upgrade). Adobe is only (and only!) thinning their userbase.

  • How many times can i install LR5?

how many times can i install LR5? we have 4 laptops and 1 desktop in our home.

    That's right. Nothing technical.
Just like the pre-activation days of the Adobe Creative Suite, it's an honour system to limit yourself to using the software on a maximum of two computers at any one time in order to comply with the EULA.

  • I had all photos on a Windows desktop.  Got a mac laptop, installed LR5, and put all images from Windows onto an external hard drive.  When I go to import them into LR on the Mac, they are all locked.  Help, please.  Thanks

I had all photos on a Windows desktop.  Got a mac laptop, installed LR5, and put all images from Windows onto an external hard drive.  When I go to import them into LR on the mac, they are all locked.  Help, please!

"I plugged the external into the Mac and moved a folder of images onto the desktop.  It looks like it went from read only to not locked.  Is this possible?"
Yes, that's exactly what happened. If you buy another drive, you could copy from your existing drive to the new and your files will be read/write. The new drive will have to be formatted as an HFS drive (that's the Mac's format). If you need to format it, you use Disk Utility which is in the Utilities folder on your Mac. Be careful with that -- it wipes out whatever is currently on the drive. Make sure you format the right drive.
I keep all my images on an external drive, too. In fact, I have two matching drives and sync them so I always have a backup.

  • Installing a better Hard Drive in my MacBook Pro

    Hey guys,
I'm looking to install a better hard drive into my MacBook Pro (15.4" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz) that I bought last September, and I'm strictly a software guy: I know little to nothing about hardware.
I'm hoping to upgrade from a 120 GB to a 320 and hopefully from 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm. Is there any other specifications I need to follow, other than it needs to be a notebook hard drive and it needs to be SATA?
I have these picked out from a previous post:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/320-GB-7200-RPM-Hitachi-SATA-Hard-Drive-New/IF 107-063
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145228
Is there any difference besides the price? Will both work in my computer?
Also, I have the AppleCare protection plan. Is there someone who can install a hard drive for me that won't void the protection plan?
I tried calling an apple store, and they want me to come in to the apple store and talk to a genius, which is too difficult for me at the moment.
    Thanks,
    - Keith

Yeah I'm more of a speed freak, I admit it. 7200 RPM sounds good even sacrificing the size, because I already have an external and intend to get a huge desktop in the next few years. Also, my laptop is much more powerful than any of my computers could ever be upgraded to be.
Also, I talked to my brother who says compared to my 5400 rpm hard drive, a 7200 rpm hard drive will run *significantly hotter* and get *significantly less battery life* (~30 minutes depending). Has anyone here upgraded a 5400 rpm notebook hard drive to a 7200 rpm hard drive before? Can you say anything about these claims?
I'm pretty sure I'm getting one of these two:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0A57547/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD3200BEKT/
Any advice of comparison, brand loyalty, or how these specific hard drives will compare when it comes to heating up or battery life would be appreciated (for example, the Hitachi one claims to use less energy and user reviews claim to get better battery life).
    Thanks,
    - Keith

  • Two part question 1) what happens if you  sign into messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5 after it expired? does the whole application not work or just imessage? 2) does installing messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5  delete ichat?

    Two part question
    1) what happens if you  sign into messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5 after it expired? does the whole application not work or just imessage? can you stil use AIM, jabbar, google talk, or yahoo?  if you open messages beta does it immediately tell you that messages beta expired?
    2) does installing messages beta on os x lion 10.7.5  delete ichat or just transform ichat into messages beta giving the illusion that ichat is deleted?

    Hi,
It was never completely clear whether it was just hidden or whether Apple ran a download page for iChat 6.
As the Download for Messages Beta was separate and "Deleted" iChat it would seem it would be another download for iChat 6.
iMessages will not function as it is only an Account type within Messages and iChat 6 does not have it.
Therefore messages on the iPhone will not sync to the Mac. (until you get Mountain Lion and Messages in that OS X version).
Mountain Lion and it's full version of Messages will not sync the iMessages that have happened in between the 14th December 2012  (end date of Messages beta) and the Install of Mountain Lion if you decide on that route.

Probably wasn't a good idea to install beta software on a device when you're not a developer.
Apple clearly states that beta software is not to be installed on production devices.
Not really much you can do except wait for iOS 6.1 to be officially released and then install it.

  • Is it possible to install the beta and also keep the newest v. of 3 on my system... as a failsafe?

After all the 'issues' I've seen in the Faq, I was wondering if it were possible to 'sequester' v. 3.6.15 as a fall back/fail safe, just in case 4 has issues with my system. . . it's old.

Yes, when you install the beta it doesn't replace the older version of firefox that you have. This is normal procedure for all Firefox betas. If you don't like the beta, just uninstall it, the previous version will still be there.

  • I have LR4 on my computer and just installed LR5. Should I uninstall LR4?

I have LR4 on my MAC and have just installed LR5. Should I uninstall LR4?

You can if you prefer to.

  • Is there any need to download and install LR5 CC if I already have LR5.2 full standalone version?

I have just purchased the Creative Cloud for photographers package, on offer @ $9.99 (£8.78) at the moment. I am an existing CS6 Premium customer which as you know includes Photoshop CS6 extended.  I have downloaded and installed the CC versions of Photoshop and Bridge. On the face of it, LR5 and LR5 CC look to be exactly the same - I don't want to end up with duplicated LR catalogs, so I am hoping someone who is fully familiar with the CC ramifications can clarify this and hoipefully confirm that I don't need to install LR5 CC..
As an aside, I have had to re-download an updated version of onOne's Perfect Photosuite (7.5.1), as my existing copy of Perfect Photosuite 7.5 didn't appear in 'File > Automate in PS CC.

Thanks very much for your reply. I will certainly use LR6 CC when it comes out - I'm pleased it isn't necessary at the moment to run both at the same time. Enough on my plate getting Photoshop CC to replicate my PS CS6 with plug-ins set up, and then there's Behance to get to grips with too!
I'd  like to say that I think the Photographer's package is a great deal - it's good to see Adobe listened to what a lot of photographers were asking for!

Obviously since you have iOS 7 you're a developer.  As a developer, you signed a NDA with Apple not to discuss the iOS on a public forum.  Please log in to the Developer Forum using your credentials and ask for help there, lest you risk having your credentials terminated.
Thanks, and best of luck to you.
