Installing Mac OS 8.6 on iMac G3 (333 Mhz- "Fruit Colors" Model)?

Hello! I have an old iMac G3, the 333 Mhz model, that was a part of the "Fruit Colors" models that came out in the middle half of the 1999 model year. While going through and deleting some of the old files on my old iMac, I assume that I actually deleted some of the software that is responsible for the OS to function. (I thought that it could have been that I needed to reset the PRAM, and then I thought that the PRAM battery may have died... But I reset it and replaced the battery and it's still not working.) The next time I tried to use it, it proceeded to make the startup chime, but then it came up with the Macintosh emblem, followed by a question mark (This I know, means that it cannot find the OS, or all of what it needs for the OS to function). Now my problem is, how will I get 8.6 back onto it when I cannot even access the internet (I have misplaced the original install and restore CD's that came with it originally). I have thought about installing a OS X Panther onto it, but was wondering if I could do that even if I had OS 8.6 on it? Please help.

I'm not certain what "3.0.f3 built" means.  I understand that you have a tray loading machine.  A plastic tray comes out where you drop in a cd.
I'd guess you are OK.
Most people use these machines to run classic.  Should be able to run any version of 9.x.

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple

      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • Install OS X 10.3 on iMac G3 500 mhz

    Hello,
When installing OS X 10.3 on an iMac G3 I received the error message, "Cannot install the bundled software" and the lighted pill button at the bottom read "close." After clicking on Close, the screen went blue as the "caterpillar" went in a circle for several minutes. We eventually hit a restart and quit. Any suggestions?
    (Firmware already updated)
    Thank you

    Hi Tim,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Do you use the software restore disks that came with this computer or do you use disks that shipped with a different model? Be aware that the software install&restore disks are hardware specific and cannot be used with a different model then the one they originally shipped with.
P.S. cornelius: retail full install disks do not contain any bundled software, just the system and it's utilities.

  • Upgrading from Mac OS 8.6 to 9.1 on iMac G3 333

    Hello all,
I recently inherited (or my mother did rather) an old iMac G3 333 mhz machine. It has 96 megs of RAM currently, and is running OS 8.6. I want to upgrade the machine to at least 9.1 so I purchased a Mac OS 9.1 software install/restore disc set on eBay.
When I load the disc into the drive it says it's a 9.1 G4 software disc. I tried booting from the disc and it doesn't seem to work, question mark on the folder appears, then goes to a smiley face, then goes to something about an unrecoverable trap error or something to that effect.
If I put in the restore CD in while 8.6 is up and running and try to restore/install it says it will not let me with the current configuration, but if I put in the software disc (I got two discs, a software disc and a restore disc) it allows me to attempt the install, but says that I need to install the latest firmware which is supposed to be in the "CD Extras" folder, but as far as I can see, is not there. These are NOT CD-R copies but ORIGINAL restore/software discs, I believe they came from a G4 machine.
If anyone could point me in the right direction or give me some advice on how to get this working it'd be much appreciated. I tried burning the firmware upgrade (the 1.2 firmware for the 333 that is recommended on the apple site) on my brother's mac using toast, but it doesn't seem like this old G3 will read CD-R's. Additionally, the internet browsing software is so old that I can't even do something like email it to myself because Yahoo mail doesn't support my browser!
Please help! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
    Justin

Hi, Curmudgeon. The G4-specific discs you bought won't work on a G3. You'll need to obtain a retail (not model-specific) OS 9.0.4, 9.1 or 9.2.1 installer CD if you want to upgrade beyond OS 8.6.
But let me ask: do you have a pressing reason to upgrade the OS on this old iMac? Do you have some hardware or software that requires OS 9? OS 8.6 is a fine operating system for an early iMac or any other Mac of that vintage, and OS 9 doesn't offer much that isn't available in 8.6. If you can make do with what's already installed, my recommendation is that you do so, saving a little money and hassle in the bargain.
As for web browsers, I don't think you're going to find OS 9's selection of available browsers much larger than that for OS 8.6. All the browsers that will run in either OS are long in the tooth now, and won't properly handle a lot of modern web sites.

Exactly which iMac model do you have? The following explains how to find it.
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Post the result here:
To post screen shot do this:
Press COMMAND-SHIFT-4 which will change the cursor to crosshairs.
Hold down the mouse button and use the crosshairs to select the part of the screen you wish to capture.
Release the button and the image will be saved to your Desktop.
Click on the Camera icon in the toolbar of the forum message editor.
Drag the image onto the Choose File button and click on the Insert button.

  • OpenGL 1.3 on iMac G4 700 MHz running MacOS X 10.4.11

    Morning.
I want to install and play Glest on an iMac G4 700 MHz running MacOS X 10.4.11. The machine is equipped with a Geforce MX-2. This hardware normally does not support OpenGL 1.3. I do not know whether it's necessary to have a hardware that supports OpenGL 1.3 or thats sufficiant to have OpenGL 1.3 installed.
Therefore: (How) can I install OpenGL 1.3 on this machine?
    TIA and kind regards, Friedrich

Have you googled, "OpenGL on a Mac"?
Yes. I did. And I've found a lot of stuff from programmers, a page by Apple explaining that the Geforce MX2 does support OpenGL 1.1, but no user friendly answer, whether it works or not and how to install OpenGL on a iMac G4 700 running MacOS X 10.4.11.

  • HT4854 I bought a new mac including 10.8 ML. How can I install 10.8 on my older iMac (mid-2011) with 10.6?

I bought a new mac including 10.8 Mountain Lion. (How) can I now install 10.8 on my older iMac (mid-2011) which came with 10.6?

You will need to buy it at the app store. The license for the pre-installed OS on your new machine is only for that machine. Only OS's purchased from the app store can be installed on more than one machine (as long as you own it).

  • Can I install Mac OS 10.4.7 CD's meant for an imac intel chip (Jan 2007)??

Can I install Mac OS 10.4.7 CD's that came from an imac intel chip (Jan 2007) ONTO an ibook power pc G3? The ibook only has a CD drive and I believe the OS installs are CD's not DVD's as there are 2 of them. The ibook currently is running OS 10.3.9 with 23 GB on the HD at the moment. I may be able to free up some space though by dumping Microsoft Office. I know for sure I had 10.4.7 on there before but I got a used HD and there is only 10.3.9 on it. Sigh.

Nope, sorry wont work, those are Machine & Architecture specific Install Discs.
See Tom's, (Texas Mac Man), great info on where/how to find/get Tiger...

  • Need Urgent Help Cannot install Mac OSX 10.6 on 20" intel imac

I recently purchased an intel imac an intel mac pro from an auction. When i purchased the macs i was told that no operating systems will installed and i would need to purchase and install mac osx10.
I purchased the mac osx10.4.6 family pack from the apple store online.
i put the new disc in the mac and restarted holding down c.
for some reason nothing happens and i get folder with a question mark.
I have tried this several times but nothing seems to work.
I am a complete novice with macs and migrsting from pc.
    thanks

You cannot buy a retail version of Tiger that will install on any Intel Macs. You must have the original installer discs that came with the computer. You should not have purchased the computers without them nor should they have been sold to you without them.
The only option you have is to call AppleCare or go to a local Apple store and see if you can purchase the discs needed for each computer (there are different versions for each model.)

I Have office for mac home and business 2011, can you install on both users on one iMac?

That's often a permissions problem. Try launching Disk Utility and running the Repair Permissions. That may fix the problem. Also confirm that the Office 2011 folder is in the Applications folder at the root of the hard drive, not a folder within your wife's Home folder.
If that doesn't help. post back with further details; your version of Mac OS X, whether you installed Office via a user account with admin privileges or not, and what happens when you try and launch Office from your account including error messages if any.
    Hope this helps.

  • TS3742 I have an iMac 24" system. I just recently installed MAC OS X 10.7.4 (Lion) on my system. Since doing so, my system consistently hangs. Particularly when using iMovie and iPhoto.

I have an iMac 24" system. I just recently installed MAC OS X 10.7.4 (Lion) on my system. Since doing so, my system consistently hangs. Particularly when using iMovie and iPhoto. I have to power off my system to get it running again. Any suggestions on what I can do  to address this situation.

I would first reset the SMC:
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
Then I would reset the PRAM by rebooting the iMac while simultaneously holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until the machine restarts a second time.
Let us know if these  procedures don't solve the problems.
    Hope this helps

Thank you for all of your answer.

I've seen it mentioned on here that a PRAM reset may solve it:
    Reset PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P and R.
You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Installing Mac OS X 10.4.7 DVD disk to a 2nd Hand G5 imac?

Hi trying to install my version of 10.4.7 which works on my ibook G4. But I recently bought a 2nd Hand G5 iMac 1.83 Ghz Intel duo. I loaded the disk and it does'nt seem to want to work? It's saying the destination is not suitable? Would I need to buy new Mac OX for the G5 iMac? Any thing have I missed? (holding C btton once restarted!
    iBOOK g4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 550 Mhz PowerPC G4. 256 MB SDRAM.

You are trying to install the Tiger install package that shipped with your iBook with a PPC processor (or a Tiger retail install package) on a G5 iMac Intel Duo with an Intel processor which is impossible. Even if both Macs have a PPC processor it would not be possible with the install package that shipped with your iBook.
You purchased a 2nd hand iMac G5 with Intel processor without the Tiger install package that shipped with this Mac when new and it doesn't currently have Tiger installed? You really need the install package that shipped with this Mac when new for a number of good reasons.

  • Installing mac os 10.2 Jaguar on my iMac G3 from 10.1 Puma

I got this old iMac G3 slot loading from a friend that has 64Mb of RAM. It had os 9 on it and I installed mac os 10.1 Puma on it and it installed fine. Then I popped in the mac os 10.2 Jaguar in and restarted the mac and installer opened and started to install mac os 10.2 Jaguar but it was installing very slow. It tool forever for the language selector to select and continue then after that the introduction to the installer begin and is taking forever. The continue button is not available to click and the reading packages little symbol is spinning.

    Chrisapoo23, welcome to Apple Discussions.
You have several problems. You state the Mac has 64MB RAM. Jaguar requires a minimum of 128MB RAM. The iMac requires a firmware update before installing OS X. You need to check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.
Also, what size hard drive is installed? You may not have sufficient space for all you are trying to install.
